Constructions of identity among young students living with visual or physical disabilities at a university in Cape TownSteyn, Inga Dale January 2019 (has links)
Magister Artium - MA / Not all disabilities are the same and the way that society may respond to people with disabilities depends on their “disability” and how their body deviates from the appearance norms of society. People with disabilities constitute a significant portion of the South African population. A body of research and physical evidence shows that people with disabilities may face certain obstacles or limitations in fulfilling a normal life. Obstacles include perceptions of disabilities, negative stigma and attitudes, barriers to an environment which is accessible for people with disabilities, and constructions of ableism. In a way, these obstacles influence the way people with disabilities construct their identity. Beyond this, the voices of people with disabilities are not always heard and their personal experiences are not always given political recognition.
This research aimed to explore how a group of students living with a physical or visual disability constructed their identities in their environment or society. A feminist qualitative method was conducted. The study focused on the experiences and perceptions of nineteen to twenty-seven year old female and male students with disabilities. Out of the six participants, two were coloured, three were black and one participant is classified as coloured, but identifies as biracial. A semi-structured interview was used for data collection and a Qualitative Thematic Analysis was used to analyse the data. Social constructionism and intersectionality were useful theoretical approaches adopted in exploring the lived experiences of students with disabilities.
The results of this study revealed that students with disabilities find living with a disability as not being a barrier to living a fulfilling life. Students with disabilities construct their identities in a way that frees them from ideologies which shape the experience of disability in a negative way. However, the study revealed that negative barriers to identity construction still exist. These barriers come in the form of negative perceptions and stigma of disability, ableism and the medical model. The study further revealed that when the lived experiences of students with disabilities are understood through the lens of gender, race and class, these social divisions overlap and are cumulative on the effects of student’s experiences. The one major barrier in identity construction that the study revealed is the negative social perceptions of disability. The way in which students feel that they belong in their society is representative of how they respond to negative social constructions of disability.

This study aimed to explore students& / #8217 / and teachers& / #8217 / perceptions with respect
to biology education at high school level in order to reveal the reasons of students& / #8217 / low achievement in biology as indicated by the university entrance examinations
between the years 1996-2002.
The study was conducted with a qualitative approach. Therefore two separate
interview schedules were developed to be conducted with 45 high school biology
teachers and 45 eleventh grade science students in 10 schools including private,
Anatolian, and public high schools. All the interviews were audiotaped and
transcribed verbatim by the researcher.
Results revealed that there are serious problems in biology education such as
biology curriculum covering high amounts of topics, unavailable time allocated to
biology, insufficient economical conditions... The reasons of students& / #8217 / low
achievement in biology can be summarized under the headings of students& / #8217 / perception of biology, the nature of biology lesson, questions asked in universityentrance examinations, students& / #8217 / perception of other science lessons, and biology
education in Turkey.

A visual interpretation of Chinese immigrants’ identity dilemma in New ZealandZhang, Nuo January 2008 (has links)
This thesis explores the notion of identity dilemma and its visualisation in the context of New Zealand Chinese immigration. It focuses on interpreting and visualising New Zealand Chinese immigrants’ thoughts and feelings and their struggle to adapt to the environment as well as their ambivalent negotiation to balance their in-between identity of being a New Zealander (Westerner) and Chinese. It is a practice-based project and is presented by means of photography, with illustration as the supporting medium. The predicament of identity is explored through interviewing members of the New Zealand Chinese community. A semi-constructed interview is designed and introduced to canvass 20 Chinese participants’ opinions of their cultural beliefs and sense of belonging in a Western society. The data is collected and analysed to investigate the informants’ thoughts and feelings in their daily routine in a multicultural community. I, as an art and design practitioner, visually interpret and transcend my opinion of identity dilemma of Chinese immigrants into my practical works. The participants’ thoughts and feelings are transferred into my artwork through creating patterns of visual elements. Employing a heuristic visual research method, my explorative work attempts to transfer social research findings of the idea of identity dilemma into my artwork for initiating contemporary visual discourse.

Motion Field and Optical Flow: Qualitative PropertiesVerri, Alessandro, Poggio, Tomaso 01 December 1986 (has links)
In this paper we show that the optical flow, a 2D field that can be associated with the variation of the image brightness pattern, and the 2D motion field, the projection on the image plane of the 3D velocity field of a moving scene, are in general different, unless very special conditions are satisfied. The optical flow, therefore, is ill-suited for computing structure from motion and for reconstructing the 3D velocity field, problems that require an accurate estimate of the 2D motion field. We then suggest a different use of the optical flow. We argue that stable qualitative properties of the 2D motion field give useful information about the 3D velocity field and the 3D structure of the scene, and that they can usually be obtained from the optical flow. To support this approach we show how the (smoothed) optical flow and 2D motion field, interpreted as vector fields tangent to flows of planar dynamical systems, may have the same qualitative properties from the point of view of the theory of structural stability of dynamical systems.

Bakgrund: Telefonrådgivning är en tillgänglig verksamhet som visat sig vara kostnadseffektiv för både uppringarna och samhället. De flesta uppringarna är nöjda med tjänsten när sjuksköterskorna låter dem vara delaktiga i samtalet samt respekterar dem. Sjuksköterskornas främsta uppgift i telefonrådgivning är bedömningar avseende uppringarnas behov av vårdnivå. Syfte: Att beskriva sjuksköterskors upplevelser av att tillhandahålla telefonrådgivning. Metod: En systematisk litteraturstudie med beskrivande syntes vilken baseras på tio stycken kvalitativa vetenskapliga artiklar. Resultat: Att som sjuksköterska tillhandahålla telefonrådgivning innebär flera utmaningar. Vissa faktorer gällande samtalen komplicerade kommunikationen och sjuksköterskornas bedömningar. Flera krav ställdes på sjuksköterskorna som hanterade dessa med hjälp av kollegor och beslutsstöd. Arbetet i telefonrådgivningen gav kunskap och erfarenheter vilka bidrog till att sjuksköterskorna utvecklades i sin yrkesroll. Slutsats: Sjuksköterskornas upplevelser är i stor grad relaterade till avsaknaden av den visuella kontakten samt de bedömningar de förväntas göra i sitt arbete. Mycket förväntas av sjuksköterskorna som upplever att de har ett stort ansvar gentemot uppringarna. / Background: Telenursing is a business that has proven to be cost-effective for both callers and society. Most callers are happy with the service when the nurses let them be involved in the conversation and respects them. The main role of nurses in telenursing is to assess the callers need out of level of care. Aim: The aim is to describe nurse’s experiences of providing telephone advice. Method: A systematic review of descriptive synthesis based on ten qualitative scientific articles. Result: To provide telephone advice involves several challenges. Some factors concerning the talks complicated communication and assessments for the nurses. Several requirements were on the nurses who handled these with the help of colleagues and decision support. The work provided knowledge and experiences which contributed to nurses in their professional role. Conclusion: Nurse’s experiences are related to the lack of visual contact and the assessments they are expected to do in their work. Much is expected of the nurses who perceive that they have a great responsibility to the callers.
