Evolução dos sistemas de acasalamento em abelhas sem ferrão (Apidae, Meliponini) / Evolution of mating systems in stingless bees (Apidae, Meliponini)

Vollet Neto, Ayrton 25 August 2016 (has links)
The mating systems of social bees is intriguing. Queens mate within a narrow time window very early in their lives, storing male sperm for their entire lifespan. In bumblebees (Bombini) and stingless bees (Meliponini), queens usually mate with a single male (monandry), while the queens of Apis species (Apini) mate with several males (polyandry). Several hypothesis have been proposed to understand the benefits of the extreme polyandry of honey bees. However, very little have been done in order to understand the equally intriguing selective forces that make such a diverse group as stingless bees as monandrous. In the present study we investigate how the selective force imposed by the chances of producing diploid males (a natural consequence of sex determination system of Hymenoptera) can affect the mating system of the Brazilian stingless bee Scaptotrigona depilis. In particular, queens that make a matched mating for the sex locus (i.e., mating with a male with the same sex allele) will have reduced fitness because queens are executed when producing 50% of diploid males amongst her diploid offspring. Mating with more males increase the chances of a matched mating, but reduces the proportion of diploid males on their brood. By manipulating the brood combs of experimental colonies, we tested whether queens with smaller proportions of diploid males (25%) will have mortality rates similar to queens in colonies with 0% or 50% diploid males. For that, we obtained queens producing diploid males and studied details of diploid males biology, in particular their sperm viability and morphology, and their behaviour out of their mother colonies (Chapter 1). We verified how prevalent queen execution behaviour under diploid male production is on this species, and the possible proximate mechanisms that trigger this behaviour (Chapter 2). Finally, we verified whether queen mortality in colonies with lower proportion of diploid males (simulating multiple mating) is closer to colonies with 50% or 0% of diploid males (Chapter 3). We verified that diploid males of S. depilis are viable and can join reproductive aggregations. Their sperm cells have the same viability of haploid males, but have longer sperm head and tail cells. Queens are executed in the presence of 50% of diploid males, and this behaviour is very prevalent on the studied population, with 100% of queen death (n=20). The cuticular hydrocarbon chemical profile of diploid males is quantitatively different from haploid males, suggesting that workers could use it as a signal for queen execution. However, sperm count of newly mated queens and one-year-old queens showed that sperm depletion might affect queen lifespan. This suggests that the signal for queen execution could also be related to a high number of males emergence, as a signal of queen sperm depletion, instead of male ploidy. Queens mortality in colonies with 25% of diploid males was similar to queens in colonies with 50%. This indicates that double mating is selected against regarding this selective pressure, since mating twice will increase the chances of a matched mating and queen mortality will be the same as single mated queens.

TRANS-Gression: the game

De Anda, Michael A 25 April 2013 (has links)
In the art of drag, icons of masculinity and femininity are juxtaposed on one body, challenging heteronormativity. The goal of this project was to create a game that provided a safe space for players to negotiate their own identities of gender and sexuality through the framework provided by the game rules and affordances. The research behind this project challenges the criticisms of drag as purely gender representation, identifying drag as a signifier of the presence of the LGBTQ community. By iterating the design throughout the development process, I was able to create opportunities for players to reflect upon gender presentation and be in solidarity with one another. Conversations resulting from the play experience revealed the ability of games to provide a context for players to navigate complex understandings.

U.N.I.T.Y. Addressing Misogyny and Transcending the Sista-Ho Dichotomy in Hip Hop Culture

Easterling, Michael H. 01 June 2016 (has links)
In this thesis I investigate the portrayal of women in Hip Hop as either a sista' or a ho, a dichotomy that mirrors the Freudian Madonna-whore complex prevalent in Western Society. Belittled and disparaged by the sexism implied by this dichotomy, women have become victims of various forms of misogynistic abuse. Queen Latifah stands up against this misogyny, using Hip Hop in the very way it was designed to be used “as a voice for the disenfranchised“ speaking out against the sexism in Hip Hop in the same way African American males use Hip Hop against White mainstream society. She thus challenges the sista'-ho dichotomy and becomes empowered to decry gender discrimination in the same way African American males become empowered to denounce racism through the performance of Hip Hop.

Imagery and Objectification: A Study of Early Modern Queenship

Geiter, Heather R 01 August 2016 (has links)
Queen Anne Boleyn (~1507-1536) failed to meet social norms during her time as Queen Consort to Henry VIII (1491-1548). By tracing concepts of queenship through the works of Chrétien de Troyes, Andreas Capellanus, Thomas Malory, and Juan Luis Vives this thesis demonstrates how Anne united the office of queen and mistress to bring her downfall and introduce a new construct of queenship.

THE IMPACTS OF HONEY BEE QUEEN STRESS ON WORKER BEHAVIOR AND HEALTH

Preston, Sarah R. 01 January 2018 (has links)
Pesticides, poor nutrition, parasites and diseases work synergistically to contribute to the decline of the honey bee. Heritable sub-lethal behavior/immune effects may also contribute to the decline. Maternal stress is a common source of heritable immune/behavior deficits in many species. A stressed honey bee queen has the potential to pass such deficits on to worker bees. Using a repeated measures design, this study will determine whether the health of worker bee is reduced by a cold stress on the queen by analyzing egg hatch rate and protein content, emergence rate, and adult aggression and immune function for offspring laid before and after the stressor. Results show that queen stress influences egg hatching rate and emergence rate but does not impact egg protein content, adult offspring immune function or aggressive behavior.

Expressions of power: Queen Christina of Sweden and patronage in Baroque Europe

Popp, Nathan Alan 01 December 2015 (has links)
Queen Christina of Sweden (1626-1689) utilized art in many ways to promote herself and assert power in Baroque Europe. Previous scholars have addressed either Christina’s use of art to safeguard authority as Swedish regnant, or her expressions of sovereignty as an erstwhile Protestant queen in Rome, but no scholarship to date has addressed the topic of how Christina’s patronage developed, or explored how motifs employed early on later reappeared. This dissertation brings together both sides of the equation to provide a comprehensive understanding of how Queen Christina’s patronage developed in Stockholm, and how her approach evolved as she became a fixture in Rome. The deployment of the arts was necessary to assert Christina’s authority in a patriarchal environment and ultimately, to politically legitimize herself as an independent royal woman. An initial review of royal imagery of her father King Gustav II Adolf (1594-1632) provides the background for examination of early patronage promoting Christina, which drew upon Gustav’s precedents while beginning to establish her as a majestic leader in her own right. Originally the queen’s autonomy was limited by a constitutional rewrite as others steered her image for their own benefit, but Christina matured to make her own choices and developed an approach to patronage that continued throughout her life. My research contributes to our understanding of Christina’s development as art patron by examining commissions that counteract this administrative system that restrained her sovereignty. Portraits from her majority rule relied on iconography and visual rhetoric to influence a select audience, while her coronation and abdication proceedings, by contrast, were multisensory public events that broadly proclaimed her capacity to rule. Hence my analysis ranges from the subtle reading of particular images to taking stock of the language of sheer pageantry of those more public visual displays. After abdication Queen Christina had virtually no political clout, but as dowager regnant, she wielded art and patronage to maintain social standing and power. My research considers how Christina deployed the arts to craft her public persona and express her individuality within the male-dominated political structure of the Vatican even as others played off her remarkable abdication with patronage of their own. Christina’s approach was based on precedents developed in Sweden, and she applied them to her Roman situation with varied success. Through many challenges, scandals, and adversities, art was a potent vehicle both for Christina and for those around her to capitalize on her unique status in the history of Baroque Europe.

“I Stand for Sovereignty”: Reading Portia in Shakespeare’s <em>The Merchant of Venice</em>

Van Pelt, Deborah 04 March 2009 (has links)
Portia serves as a complex and often underestimated character in William Shakespeare's controversial comedy The Merchant of Venice. Using the critical methodologies of New Historicism and feminism, this thesis explores Portia's representation of Elizabeth Tudor, Queen of England from 1558 to 1603. Striking similarities exist between character and Queen, including physical description, suitors, marriage issues, and rhetoric. In addition, the tripartite marriage at the play's conclusion among Portia, Bassanio, and Antonio represents the relationship Elizabeth Tudor formed between her merchant class and her aristocracy. Shylock serves as a representation of a generic or perhaps Catholic threat to England during the early modern era. Moreover, by examining Portia's language in the trial scene, the play invites audiences to read her as a representative of the learned Renaissance woman, placing special emphasis on the dialectical and rhetorical elements of the language trivium in classical studies. Finally, through a close reading of the mercantile language in the text, Portia can be interpreted as the merchant of the play's title.
