Synthetic studies toward pavettamine, the active principle from Pavetta harborii

Gebretnsae, Samson Yebio 19 August 2008 (has links)
Gousiekte (“quick” disease) is a plant-induced cardiomyopathy of livestock in South Africa, that is characterized by the sudden death of animals within a period of 3-6 weeks after the initial ingestion of toxic plant material. Six species of three genera of the Rubiaceae family viz. Pachystigma pygmaeum, P. thamnus, and P. latifolium; Pavetta harborii and P. schuman-niana, and Fadogia homblei have been identified as the causative agents of the disease. The toxin responsible for the poisoning, named pavettamine, has been isolated and the structure and absolute configuration established as (2S,4R,8R,10S)-1,11-diamino-6-aza-undecane-2,4,8,10-tetraol, or the enantiomer, by mass spectrometry and NMR spectroscopy. Retrosynthetic analysis of the pavettamine molecule as outlined in the dissertation showed that the secondary amine function could be obtained from the amide functional group in an intermediate such as (2R,4S)-N-[(2′R,4′S)-2,4,5-trihydroxypentan-1′-yl]-2,4,5-trihydroxy-pentanamide A. Disconnection of the amide bond then generated two C5 building blocks viz. an amine B and a carboxylic acid C which through a set of functional group transformations led to a common C5 building block, a pentane-1,2,4,5-tetraol D. The terminal primary hydroxy groups required different protecting groups at all times in order to safe-guard the integrity of the two stereogenic centres. In addition identical protecting groups but different to those used for the primary hydroxy groups, were necessary for the secondary hydroxy groups. Further analysis of the C5 building block D showed that it could be obtained from (2S)-malic acid by functional group transformations, chiral sulfoxide methodology and an appropriate protective group strategy. A suitable protective group strategy was developed and an 11 step synthetic route for the C5 building block established. The successful conversion of this moiety through functional group transformations provided the C5 amine B and C5 carboxylic acid C which were linked to give the target compound, the amide D but with the hydroxy groups protected. The synthetic study presented in the dissertation provides an efficient methodology toward the synthesis of any of the 10 possible stereoisomers of pavettamine. / Dissertation (MSc)--University of Pretoria, 2009. / Chemistry / unrestricted

En undersökning av snabbkopplingsadapterns nödvändighet : Ett fenomenologiskt examensarbete / An investigation of the quick change adapter’s necessity : A phenomenological thesis

Wilsborn, Karl, Heggdal, Kennet January 2020 (has links)
Aim: The aim of this thesis was to investigate the necessity of the quick change adapter for lower limb amputees.   Background: Quick Change Adapter is a relatively new product that both Otto Bock and Lindhe Xtend offers, but no research has been done on the area of its necessity yet.  According to the supplier´s websites the benefits of the product is that you with it easily can change prosthetic components without affecting the alignments or change socket.   Method: To investigate the necessity of the Quick Change Adapter, semi structural interviews of phenomenological characteristic were used.  A series of seven questions were compiled as a basis for the interview from the three focus areas: Function, participation and quality of Life. The thesis involved n=6 participants, of who n=3 was trantibial amputated and n=3 transfemoral amputated. Collected data was later analysed to find general themes and results.   Results: From the interviews these themes were exposed: Changing prosthetic feet/prosthetic knee joints, Donn and doff of pants, Socket fit, Transport and Biomechanics. Each theme presented a potential application area where the biggest needs seemed to be in Changing prosthetic feet/prosthetic knee joints, Socket fit and Transport.   Conclusions: The necessity of the Quick Change Adapter turned out to be very subjective, and depended more on the participant´s life then any general factors. Still there were some potential application areas detected for it.

Java Auto Grader

Abdulrazzak, Shahm, Mattsson, Tor January 2023 (has links)
The process of grading code submissions in programming courses is time-consuming and error-prone. To address this issue, we propose a project that automates the testing and grading process for Java code submissions at Halmstad University. Our approach leverages property-based testing using the JUnit Quick-Check library to generate tests and test reports automatically.   The tool we demonstrate in this project is designed to provide students with immediate feedback on their code submissions and reduce the workload for instructors. By automatically generating tests and test reports, our approach ensures that code submissions meet the required specifications and are free from common errors. The com.pholser library is utilized to implement the property-based testing approach.   We believe that our project has the potential to improve the grading process for programming courses and provide a more efficient and effective way of assessing student code submissions. Our implementation can be easily extended to support other programming languages and can be integrated with existing learning management systems to provide a seamless experience for instructors and students alike.

Arancon, Rick Arneil 20 December 2018 (has links)
Hydrotreating is an important catalytic process in petroleum refining which uses sulfided bimetallic catalysts NiWS or NiMoS (or CoMoS) supported on alumina. Their conventional preparation involves an incipient wetness impregnation of an aqueous solution of Mo/W and Ni/Co salts, and then activation by a sulfo-reductive agent (such as H2S/H2). To meet environmental regulations and improve the energy efficiency of hydrotreatment, permanent improvements on the performance of these catalytic systems are expected. This work is thus focused on the preparation of highly active hydrotreating catalysts through a controlled surface chemistry (CSC) approach; which involves the successive impregnation of Mo5+ and Ni2+ molecular precursors in an organic solvent on a thermally treated silica-alumina support. In the first part of this thesis, the active phase genesis of CSC and conventional Mo and NiMo catalysts is studied by in situ quick-XAS combined with various other techniques (chemometrics, XPS, EPR, STEM-HAADF, molecular modeling). We thus propose molecular structures from the oxide of supported Mo and Ni precursors up to the numerous intermediate sulfided species as a function of temperature. This multi-technique analysis enables first to reveal the specific features of the genesis of CSC and conventional catalysts which may explain their different catalytic activities. Then, it also reveals new insights into the mechanisms of Ni promoter incorporation into the NiMoS phase as a function of the preparation. In the second part, the feasibility of replacing Co and Ni as promoters is explored. Using the CSC method, we attempted to synthesize alternative catalysts of the form XYMoS ternary sulfides, where X and Y are 3d transition metals. As suggested by previous quantum simulations, certain XY formulations possibly reveal a synergy effect as observed in CoMoS and NiMoS active phases. The most promising formulations merit further investigations.
