No Free Kicks : The Experiences of an Aboriginal Family in Australian Rules Football

Hayward, Eric H. January 2002 (has links)
Aboriginal people make a great contribution to Australian sport in conditions of considerable adversity, and yet their contribution goes largely unacknowledged. This study investigates the experiences of one Aboriginal family with an extensive history of involvement with Australian Rules Football using methodologies which seek, and value, Aboriginal perspectives on their involvement. It privileges Indigenous knowledge. The study focuses particularly on the involvement of the Hayward family in Australian Rules Football - the game they love - and in which they have been intensely involved for many generations. The study describes how the Haywards of southwest Western Australia, like most Aboriginal families, experienced an extensive period of colonisation in which their social and cultural autonomy and power were eroded. The historical experience of Aboriginal Australians is vastly different to that of mainstream Australians, and grossly inequitable, not only in terms of economic and educational opportunity, but also in terms of access to sporting opportunities. In many ways, the story of the Hayward family is representative of the experiences of many Black sportsmen and women over the past hundred years. It is suggested that, in order to understand Aboriginal participation and foster the development of Aboriginal sportspeople of all ages, an understanding of the context of their lives is crucial. This study then, explores my extended family's experiences as participants in mainstream sport. It describes how the Haywards, like their community contemporaries, have confronted the limited opportunities afforded to them in their ambitions to gain access, equity of participation, and appropriate reward for effort in their sporting endeavours. / Over many generations of Aboriginal participation in the game, there has been considerable inequality of opportunity to enter and participate. In their efforts to participate, members of the Hayward family faced many obstacles unacknowledged by non-Aboriginal players, administrators and spectators. The study shows that many of these obstacles had little to do with the sporting prowess of the Haywards. Every past and present player interviewed as part of this research told of circumstances where they felt that they had not been given a fair go - be it by an umpire, a team official, opposing players, players from their own team, or the crowd. For every case of acceptance of Aboriginal players by a football club, there are many stories of rejection by other clubs. Despite these obstacles, the study found that the Haywards (like many Aboriginal people) see sport (and particularly football) as significant in their lives. They love the game but, equally importantly, they believe that sporting prowess can open a path of entry to mainstream society, provide important economic advantages and offer opportunities for broader social participation while maintaining strong traditions of Aboriginal virtuosity and relationships. The study concludes by suggesting that, despite the adversities encountered by this family in their desire to participate in football, there has been much in the game that has brought pleasure, a sense of success, satisfaction and achievement to them. While this is the story of one family, I believe it provides important insights into experiences common to many Aboriginal families and sportspersons, and that this research deepens our understanding of Australian social history. Football has been, and continues to be, a valued part of the lives of many Aboriginal people.

Bins, Gabriela Nobre January 2014 (has links)
This study analyzes how Porto Alegre municipal schools deal with ethnic/ racial issues in physical education. Through an initial questionnaire answered by the physical education teachers of the municipal schools and an ethnographic case study, the study seeks to identify the possibilities and limits to tackle ethnic and racial issues in physical education in the Porto Alegre municipal schools. The research aimed at identifying and understanding how physical education teachers of the schools in Porto Alegre address the ethnic and racial issues in their classes and what municipal, state and/or federal political-pedagogical devices interfere with their work. First it presents an overview of approaches to ethnic/racial issues in physical education classes in Porto Alegre municipal schools by establishing a profile of the teachers and their familiarity with the subject. Then the ethnographic case study describes the practice of a teacher who uses a teaching methodology based on African Brazilian civilizing values as an opportunity to work with ethnic/racial issues.

U.S. Party Platforms and Their Response to Racial Issues

Moylan, Megan 01 January 2023 (has links) (PDF)
This thesis examines the handling of racial issues in United States political party platforms from 1964 to 2016. The primary objective of this study is to analyze how the two major political parties, the Democratic Party and the Republican Party, have approached issues of race in their platforms. To accomplish this, a content analysis was conducted on the platforms of both parties during this time period. Each reference to race in the platforms was categorized as either "acclaim," "defend," or "attack." "Acclaim" refers to statements that praise racial progress or advocate for policies that benefit marginalized communities. "Defend" refers to statements that seek to justify the party's position on race or defend racial issues, while "attack" refers to statements that criticize the other party's position or policies related to race. The study reveals that the parties have used different strategies to address race. This research is important because it sheds light on the ways in which the two major political parties have addressed one of the most significant issues facing the United States. The findings provide insight into the ideological differences between the parties and offer a historical perspective on the evolution of racial politics in the United States. This research is relevant for scholars and policymakers interested in understanding the role of race in American politics, as well as for activists and advocates seeking to influence policy outcomes related to racial justice.

Fish Consumption Advisories in Tributaries to the Chesapeake Bay: Improving the Communication of Risk to Washington, DC Anglers

Gibson, Joshua Charles 13 June 2005 (has links)
Fish consumption advisories are increasingly being issued by state and municipal governments with concerns about pollution in local waterways. These advisories are developed to inform the public about the potential dangers of consuming excessive amounts of locally caught fish. They are not enforceable limits, however, and are only guidelines and suggestions on what are considered safe meal sizes, safe meal frequencies, and species fit for consumption. As a result, few efforts are made to determine how well these advisories are being followed. In order to determine the efficacy of such urban advisories, anglers are interviewed in Washington, DC on the Potomac and Anacostia Rivers. Anglers are asked a number of questions pertaining to their fishing and consumption habits, advisory knowledge, and risk perceptions. The results suggest that several improvements can be made to better implement advisory efforts. Most importantly, minority anglers—particularly African-Americans—appear to be receiving the message in advisories, but are failing to comply with advisory recommendations. Cultural beliefs and influences, as well as information dissemination inadequacies, are cited as possible reasons for this failure. Lastly, strategies are presented that health and fisheries planners can use to better understand angler risk perception and better educate anglers about the risks of ignoring advisory recommendations. / Master of Urban and Regional Planning

Vliv kontroverzních témat na (ne)úspěch Tea party / The influence of the controversial issues on (non)success of the Tea Party

Vlčanová, Kateřina January 2016 (has links)
The aim of the present thesis is to determine whether the Tea Party candidatesʼ attitudes towards selected controversial issues influenced their electoral success and the success of the Tea Party movement as a whole. The thesis consists of two parts, theoretical and empirical. In the theoretical part the author focuses on the historical perspective of the political and party system in the United States of America, bipartism and position of third parties in the system. It also includes a brief analysis of the Democratic and Republican parties. Next, the author examines the Tea Party phenomenon - its genesis, structure, purposes and ideals. The subsequent section deals with three controversial issues, i.e. abortion, LGBT rights, and race, which reflect an ideological cleavage among the american public. The empirical part presents a case study entitled The influence of controversial issues on the (non)success of the Tea Party candidates, which deals with attitudes of the House and Senate Tea Party candidates who won the 2010 congressional elections towards the above- mentioned controversial issues.

Os reveses da ausência: as "questões raciais" na produção acadêmica do Serviço Social no Brasil (1936-2013) / The adverse effects of absence: the “racial issues” in the production of academic essays in the Social Service Area in Brazil (1936-2013)

No. of bitstreams: 1 Ruby Esther León Díaz.pdf: 5692998 bytes, checksum: b46e78f5d41fc39b72fc693d54f26296 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2016-10-03 / Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico / We consider that the small or lesser production of studies about “racial issues” in the Brazilian Social Service deserves a certain measure of questioning. Claimed by segments of Social Service as a relevant field of study for the enhancement and acknowledgment of the service users and even the profile of the social worker subjects, it does not achieve as much notoriety as the other areas of social and human sciences. The goal of this thesis is to analyze the route and the expression of the “racial issues” theme in academic literature from a historical and contemporary perspective, within the 1936-2010 period. We have also prioritized the analysis of how the Social Service academic environment inhibits and/or promotes, motivates and/or hesitates initiatives in the production of research and studies about “racial issues”. We sought to examine how the “racial issues” are studied in the Social Service field, which topics are featured in this literature and the theoretical references most commonly used for the study. The analysis covered the first term papers from the first Social Service school founded in Brazil, articles in specialized journals, studies presented in scientific events, theses and dissertations of the area, using the multidimensional method as a reference and articulating the quantitative and the qualitative aspects. We conclude that, in spite of its historical insertion in the career literature, the theme is not adequately valued or recognized in the field of Social Service. This fact may be explained due to the bond between Social Service and the hegemonic analytic perspectives that restrict the fields of thought and professional development to studying the social impact of the labor-capital relations. This bond also erases the history prior to the Marxist determination as the only critical theory for Social Service. Therefore, the existence of the first documents that analyzed the “racial issues” theme is eliminated, resulting in an idea of total absence which also suppresses the contributions of the social workers who, since the 1960s, introduced the theme in the field. Paradoxically, the idea of absence also enables and encourages the authors of contemporary literature about “racial issues” to produce thought-provoking essays and studies in the field. Authors, in a subtle way, present inflections in the closed discourses of Social Service; such inflections are presented by means of a certain fusion between the researching subject and the researched subject, producing, sometimes, tensions within an academic environment restricted to categories that do not always explain the identity-related experience of the black subjects / Consideramos que a pouca ou frágil produção de estudos sobre as "questões raciais" no Serviço Social brasileiro merece algum questionamento.
