No. of bitstreams: 1 Katia Okumura Oliveira.pdf: 8665814 bytes, checksum: 53efb333b42331b3b3bc45963fc93cf6 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2010-10-19 / The research examines the campaigns for the protection of animals, according to the analysis of their communication contracts. It aims to understand how senders and receivers of texts are built from what appears in the media. And what strategies have been employed to change public perception related to the subject. It starts with the preliminary hypothesis that usually communication used in this area is ineffective in changing behaviors of people who are not yet sensitive to the problem. Generally, animal rights organizations do not have money for ads in traditional media. Thus, the called alternative media are widely used. Such as those events viewed as radical: protest march, boycotts and invasions of public and private establishments. This is one of the strategies used by PETA - People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, the largest animal rights organization in the world. To address the issue, we will use the theory of John Downing on radical media. In this paper, will be analyzed PETA´s ad campaigns, as well as the impact of their work in Brazilian press from 2004 to 2009. The effects of the campaigns will be studied using Peircean semiotics, supported by Winfried Nöth and Lucia Santaella´s work, as well as Charles Sanders Peirce´s writings. Communication contracts will be analyzed with Patrick Charaudeau´s theory. The relationship between man and animals will be examined from Keith Taylor, who talks about the history of domestication. In order to understand the principles that involves activists´s discourse, it´s been adopted the writings of Peter Singer and Mary Warnock, concerning ethics, belief and ideology. The objective is to assess whether the work of animal protectors to transform discourses, through communication campaigns, are well constructed / A pesquisa examina as campanhas em prol da proteção dos animais, de acordo com a análise dos contratos de comunicação.

Salvador

New Media and Social Movements. How the Indigenous People of Biafra Movement Has Used the Internet to Mobilise for an Independent Biafran State

Nwofe, Emmanuel S. January 2019 (has links)
This study has examined the implications of the internet for the IPOB movement, focusing on the extent to which it has empowered the movement to engage in collective action mobilisation, enhance identity construction, framing and discourses for an independent Biafran state against multiple forms of state repressions. The thesis adopted a flexible approach that incorporated three level analysis including a macro-level analysis, which looked at the socio political and institutional environment; a meso-level, which examined the organisational infrastructure; and a micro-level exploring how the social movement made sense of their reality. The thesis addresses the debate between technology and society, and between the agency and political opportunity structures in Nigeria. It discussed the radical and agnostic democratic potential of the internet for African social movements and the dialectic between Biafra activism and the socio-political rootedness of Nigerian democracy. This approach allowed for providing analogies and new perspectives from the research and interpreting implications of human action. The thesis has found inconsistent, sometimes contradicting, data on the implication of internet technology for the IPOB movement. While there is some clear and robust evidence suggesting that new media technology has enhanced the movement's capabilities to organise, coordinate and mobilise for Biafran cause on many levels. The study reveals some severe limitations in the appropriation of internet technology in IPOB’s collective action objectives. The implication of the findings is discussed.

Radical Media, Social Movement Framing and the Georgia Straight

Willett, Cody 30 August 2013 (has links)
The central goal of this thesis is to direct attention to the underappreciated role that radical media has played in communicating social movement messages, which challenge dominant discourses and politicize youth culture, by helping advance master protest frames, reframe collective identities and promote movement-specific collective action frames. To demonstrate the relationship between radical media and movements, this thesis identifies a gap in social movement research regarding how movements communicate reframed meaning to participants. Furthermore, to address this lacuna, it proceeds to assess the movement-oriented content and discursive master, collective identity and collective action frames found in Vancouver’s ‘underground’ newspaper, the Georgia Straight, between 1967 and 1969. The research into these frames supports the argument that Georgia Straight in this period did act as a form of radical media, reflecting and reinforcing the broader social movement of youth radicalism in existence at the time. / Graduate / 0615 / 0391 / 0352 / willett.cody@gmail.com
