The event, which started on Goiania in 1987, did not stop with the end of radiological contamination and continues in a judicial, scientific and narrative process of identification and recognition of new victims. The ethnography's output follows a theoretical experiment with the notions of drama and event. In order to better understand the pattern of this event, I analyzed narratives such as romances, arts, photographs, news, documentaries, films, academic bibliography and stories that emerged from the research field. I argue that the narratives politicize the discourses of victimization and the suffering experience. The dramatic form of narratives and symbols concentrates on emotions and promotes the emotional commitment of the subjects on the trial. The drama articulates the relationship between the narratives and the event and creates a tactful space that arouses the recognition of victims through the narrative form and the suffering language. The drama occupies a central place on the dynamics of radiological event, as it extends its limits, inflects its intensity and updates the event. As a narrative of the event, the ethnography incorporates and brings up to date the drama as an analysis landmark and the description of the theme as it is absorbed by a dramatic process. / Abstract: This research presents a dramatic approach to the Cesium-137 Radiological Event. Radon in the Cango Caves.

Nemangwele, Fhulufhelo January 2005 (has links)
Radon is a naturally occurring radioactive element in the 238U decay series that is found in high concentrations in certain geological formations such as Caves. Exposure to high concentrations of radon has been positively linked to the incidence<br /> of lung cancer. This study used Electret ion chambers and the RAD7 continuous radon monitor to measure radon concentrations in the Cango Caves in the Western Cape Province, South Africa. Measurements were taken during summer i.e. February 2004 and March 2005. The results for the radon activity concentrations range from the minimum of<br /> about 800 Bq.m-3 to a maximum of 2600 Bq.m-3. The two techniques give very similar results, though the Electret ion chamber results appear to be consistently higher by a few percent where measurements were taken at the same locations. A<br /> mathematical model has been developed to investigate the radon concentrations in the Cave. Diffusion and ventilation have been considered as mechanisms for explaining the distribution of radon concentrations. The ventilation rate in the Cave has been estimated under certain assumptions, and it is found to be about 7 &times / 10&minus / 6 s&minus / 1 for the Van Zyl hall which is the first large chamber in the Cave. The radon concentration increases as one goes deeper into the Cave, but then becomes fairly constant for the deeper parts. The annual effective dose that the guides are exposed to in the Cave as a result of the radon concentrations, depends strongly on the time that they spend in the Cave and in which, halls they spend most of their time in the Cave. The initial results indicate an annual effective dose of 4-10 mSv, but this needs to be further investigated.

Assessing internal contamination levels for fission product inhalation using a portal monitor

Freibert, Emily Jane 18 November 2010 (has links)
In the event of a nuclear power plant accident, fission products could be released into the atmosphere potentially affecting the health of local citizens. In order to triage the possibly large number of people impacted, a detection device is needed that can acquire data quickly and that is sensitive to internal contamination. The portal monitor TPM-903B was investigated for use in the event of a fission product release. A list of fission products released from a Pressurized Water Reactor (PWR) was generated and separated into two groups--Group 1 (gamma- and beta-emitting fission products) and Group 2 (strictly beta-emitting fission products.) Group one fission products were used in the previously validated Monte Carlo N-Particle Transport Code (MCNP) model of the portal monitor. Two MIRD anthropomorphic phantom types were implemented in the MCNP model--the Adipose Male and Child phantoms. Dose and Risk Calculation software (DCAL) provided inhalation biokinetic data that were applied to the output of the MCNP modeling to determine the radionuclide concentrations in each organ as a function of time. For each phantom type, these data were used to determine the total body counts associated with each individual gamma-emitting fission product. Corresponding adult and child dose coefficients were implemented to determine the total body counts per 250 mSv. A weighted sum of all of the isotopes involved was performed. The ratio of dose associated with gamma-emitting fission products to the total of all fission products was determined based on corresponding dose coefficients and relative abundance. This ratio was used to project the total body counts corresponding to 250mSv for the entire fission product release inhalation--including all types of radiation. The developed procedure sheets will be used by first response personnel in the event of a fission product release.

Spectrally-matched neutron detectors designed using computational adjoint SN for plug-in replacement of Helium-3

Walker, Scottie 20 September 2013 (has links)
Neutron radiation detectors are an integral part of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) efforts to detect the illicit trafficking of radioactive or special nuclear materials into the U.S. In the past decade, the DHS has deployed a vast network of radiation detection systems at various key positions to prevent or to minimize the risk associated with the malevolent use of these materials. The greatest portion of this detection burden has been borne by systems equipped with 3He because of its highly desirable physical and nuclear properties. However, a dramatic increase in demand and dwindling supply, combined with a lack of oversight for the existing 3He stockpile has produced a critical shortage of this gas which has virtually eliminated its viability for detector applications. A number of research efforts have been undertaken to develop suitable 3He replacements; however, these studies have been solely targeted toward simple detection cases where the overall detection efficiency is the only concern. For these cases, an insertion of additional detectors or materials can produce reaction rates that are sufficient, because the neutron spectral response is essentially irrelevant. However, in applications such as safeguards, non-proliferation efforts, and material control and accountability programs (MC&A), a failure to use detectors that are spectrally matched to 3He can potentially produce dire consequences. This is because these more difficult detection scenarios are associated with fissile material assessments for 239Pu and other actinides and these analyses have almost universally been calibrated to an equivalent 3He response. In these instances, a “simple” detector or material addition approach is neither appropriate nor possible, due to influences resulting from the complex nature of neutron scattering in moderators, cross sections, gas pressure variations, geometries, and surrounding structural interference. These more challenging detection cases require a detailed computational transport analysis be performed for each specific application. A leveraged approach using adjoint transport computations that are validated by forward transport and Monte Carlo computations and laboratory measurements can address these more complex detection cases and this methodology was utilized in the execution of the research. The initial task was to establish the fidelity of a computational approach by executing radiation transport models for existing BF3 and 3He tubes and then comparing the modeling results to laboratory measurements made using these identical devices. Both tubes were 19.6 cm in height, 1-inch in diameter, and operated at 1 and 4 atm pressure respectively. The models were processed using a combination of forward Monte Carlo and forward and adjoint 3-D discrete ordinates (SN) transport methods. The computer codes MCNP5 and PENTRAN were used for all calculations of a nickel-shielded plutonium-beryllium (PuBe) source term that provided a neutron output spectra equivalent to that of weapons-grade plutonium (WGPu). Once the computational design approach was validated, the adjoint SN method was used to iteratively identify six distinct plug-in models that matched the neutron spectral response and reaction rate of a 1-inch diameter 3He tube with a length of 10 cm and operating at 4 atm pressure. The equivalent designs consist of large singular tubes and dual tubes containing BF3 gas, 10B linings, and/or 10B-loaded polyvinyl toluene (PVT). The reaction rate for each plug-in design was also verified using forward PENTRAN and MCNP5 calculations. In addition to the equivalent designs, the adjoint method also yielded various insights into neutron detector design that can lead to additional designs using a combination of different detector materials such as BF3/10B-loaded PVT, 10B-lined tubes/10B-loaded PVT, etc.

Coupled multi-group neutron photon transport for the simulation of high-resolution gamma-ray spectroscopy applications

Burns, Kimberly Ann 02 July 2009 (has links)
The accurate and efficient simulation of coupled neutron-photon problems is necessary for several important radiation detection applications. Examples include the detection of nuclear threats concealed in cargo containers and prompt gamma neutron activation analysis for nondestructive determination of elemental composition of unknown samples. In these applications, high-resolution gamma-ray spectrometers are used to preserve as much information as possible about the emitted photon flux, which consists of both continuum and characteristic gamma rays with discrete energies. Monte Carlo transport is the most commonly used modeling tool for this type of problem, but computational times for many problems can be prohibitive. This work explored the use of coupled Monte Carlo-deterministic methods for the simulation of neutron-induced photons for high-resolution gamma-ray spectroscopy applications. A method was developed for the implementation of coupled neutron-photon problems into RAdiation Detection Scenario Analysis Toolbox (RADSAT), a computer code that couples the complementary strengths of discrete-ordinate and Monte Carlo approaches to obtain high-resolution detector responses. Central to this work was the development of a method for generating multi-group neutron-photon cross-sections in a way that separates the discrete and continuum photon emissions so that the key signatures in neutron activation analysis (i.e., the characteristic line energies) are preserved. The mechanics of the cross-section preparation method are described and contrasted with standard neutron-gamma cross-section sets. These custom cross-sections were then applied to several benchmark problems using the method developed in this work. Multi-group results for neutron and photon flux are compared to MCNP results. Finally, calculated responses of high-resolution spectrometers were compared. The added computational efficiency of the coupled Monte Carlo-deterministic method and the positive agreement achieved in the code-to-code verification make the integration of the coupled neutron-photon method into RADSAT a promising endeavor.

Síntese, marcação com radioiodo e estudos in vivo frente a sítios receptores benzodiazepínicos / Flavone and analogs as radioligands for brain imaging synthesis, radioiodine labeling and in vivo studies against benzodiazepine receptor sites

Grallert, Sibila Roberta Marques 12 December 2006 (has links)
The development of radioligands for the Central Nervous System (CNS) with adequate radiotracer characteristics for the use in imaging diagnostic has been long expected by the medical community. Nevertheless, in Brazil these radiotracers are not available in market, yet. In this respect, flavonoids has drawing attention as a perspective of a new class of compounds wit CNS activity and potential of originating radiotracers to be employed in brain imaging. Therefore, the goal of this work consisted in the planning, synthesis, and labeling with radioiodine (131I and 123I) of flavone and analogs, as well as to perform radiochemical quality control, biodistribuction, and imaging studies of the radiotracers obtained in order to evaluate the uptake profile and potential for use in cerebral studies of benzodiazepinic receptors sites. To obtain the compounds, we utilized the Baker-Venkataraman transformation, and NMR-1H, NMR-13C, and IR spectroscopy were employed for identification of the molecules. The purity of the compounds obtained was assessed by means of melting point determinations. The radiolabeled compounds were obtained by aromatic electrophilic substitution with a high degree of radiochemical purity. The labeling allowed in vitro stability after 24 hours and in vivo stability of the radiolabeled flavone, provided that the thyroid did not presented significant uptake in less than one hour and favorable excretion in 24 hours. Biodistribution studies were carried out employing Swiss mice. The results indicated high concentrations of flavone-I131 in the brain, especially in the first 30 minutes after intravenous injection, as well as favorable elimination after 24 hours. Brain images were obtained from New Zeland rabbit and Wistar rats in analogical gamma camera, suggesting that short-time brain uptake of the radioligand (up to 30 minutes) allows the acquisition of cynthilographic images. Additionally, molecular modeling studies of the flavone were performed employing the semi-empiric method of AM1. The results corroborate the chemical reactivity of the compound for labeling with radioiodine by aromatic electrophilic substitution, process that is governed mainly by electrostatic interactions. The individual values of Mulliken, Natural, and Electrostatic charges of each carbon atom in flavone structure were calculated and topographic maps of charge distribution were then generated. The analysis of the maps indicates that positions 6 and 8 in the flavone molecule are most likely to present the radioiodine substitution.
