Adnominal Possession and Ditransitives

Kupula, Mikko January 2008 (has links)
This dissertation presents the findings of an investigation of adnominal possession and ditransitives on the basis of data from Modern Greek. The general thesis of the dissertation is that possessive DPs constitute nominal counterparts to ditransitive constructions. Greek ditransitives consist of double object constructions and prepositional dative constructions, which are analyzed as low applicatives; the former with possessive properties, the latter with locative. Double object constructions, unlike prepositional datives, are associated with restrictions concerning animacy, affectedness and number features on the recipient. A-movement (a)symmetries in ditransitives are argued to reduce to underlying phase structure and the movement properties of the applicative head. The dissertation shows that the possessive/locative dichotomy associated with Greek ditransitives is reproducible in the realm of adnominal possession. Prenominal possessors pattern both syntactically and semantically with dative recipients in double object constructions, while postnominal possessors display affiliation with PP-recipients in prepositional dative constructions. Binding diagnostics furthermore indicate two distinct Small Clause structures for Greek possessive DPs, syntactically identical with the structure of ditransitives.

Evidencialidad : La codificación lingüística del punto de vista / Evidentiality : The linguistic coding of point-of-view

Wachtmeister Bermúdez, Fernando January 2006 (has links)
This work investigates into the semantic domain of evidentiality and its grammatical expression in Spanish. A model for describing the evidentiality domain is outlined, which emphasises the scalar nature of the proposed parameters: information source (subject-internal ↔ external), access to information (exclusive ↔ universal) and mode of access (sensory ↔ cognitive), all of which are construed as bipolar continua. Support is also provided for the relevance of using the notions of deixis and perspective in describing evidentiality. The prevailing view in current research is that of evidentiality being a grammatical category to be analysed separately from other evidential strategies. The present study challenges this view as it attempts to broaden the perspective on how evidential meanings, expressed by various grammatical means, fit into an overall picture of human cognition and communication patterns. The theoretical framework adopted is that of Cognitive Grammar, which, it is argued, is particularly suited for investigating evidentiality, in particular due to the central role given to perspective, metaphor and category fuzziness in describing grammar and grammatical structures. Four articles constitute the body of this work, in which four different prototypical aspects of the encoding of evidentiality into grammatical devices in Spanish are addressed. In the first, the marking of common knowledge in consecutive connectives is argued to depend on a perspective shift; the second proposes the evidential values of tense morphemes to be their core meaning, time deixis being an inference; in the third and the forth it is claimed that the evidential and modal effects of both subject-raising and clitic climbing are determined through the attribution of varying degrees of prominence to the relational participants.

BUSINESS ANGELS IN SWEDEN : The entrepreneur as an Investment Project and Capital Seeker

Karlsson, Gabriel, Johansson, Elin, Arwidsson, Mathias January 2006 (has links)
Background Entrepreneurs who start a new venture will probably need either capital, or competence in how to run a business, but most likely they need them both. Business angels are individuals who invest their private money in companies in a start-up or early growth phase. Business angels can also contribute non-financial resources to companies such as competence, skills, knowledge and experience. Problem/Purpose What can entrepreneurs who are in need of both capital and competence do to find the “right” business angel, how can they attract these investors, and which factors are decisive for a successful working relationship with a business angel? The purpose of this thesis is, with a starting point in the entrepreneur as an investment project and capital seeker, to de-scribe a number of factors entrepreneurs can consider in order to increase their possibilities in initiating and carrying out a successful working relationship with a business angel. Conclusion The authors found a number of factors affecting the outcome of a working relationship with a business angel. These are the personal relationship, a match between the entrepre-neur’s needs and the business angel’s competence, an agreed agenda, and a thoroughly worked out shareholder agreement.

Factors influencing alumni connection and commitment

Hummel, Ruth, University of Lethbridge. Faculty of Arts and Science January 2010 (has links)
The purpose of this exploratory, mixed method study was to examine factors in students‟ university experiences that affected their future alumni engagement with their university. A web-based survey instrument was administered to 1,139 University of Lethbridge bachelor‟s degree holders who graduated during the University‟s first 40 years (1967 to 2007). Results indicate that the foundation for alumni engagement is set early in the student experience and is particularly affected by the nature of the relationships the student has with the institution. Alumni who were engaged as students were more likely to become engaged alumni through volunteer or donor activity. The higher alumni rated their satisfaction with factors present in their student experience and alumni relationship, the higher the likelihood that they stayed connected with and demonstrated their commitment to their alma mater. Recommendations for further research and for designing student and alumni engagement strategies are provided. / xiv, 195 leaves ; 29 cm

Demers Bonin, Michaël January 2014 (has links)
// Abstract : This research project was done through an academic partnership between the Université de Sherbrooke and Golder Associés Ltée., a mining consultant from Montréal. The latter had interrogations at regarding consolidation mechanisms controlling thickened tailings deposition, a relatively new approach in tailings management. This type of material are thickened to a point from which they don’t show any segregation, they expulse less water and can be stacked with a greater beach angle than conventional tailings. The combination of this method with the upstream raising method results in the possible reduction of the footprint of the tailings disposal facility. Thickened tailings have not been studied extensively. However, by gathering available information from the existing technical literature, it is apparent that the sole mechanism creating both a dissipation of excess pore water pressure and a settlement following deposition is self-weight consolidation. A settling column monitored with pressure transmitters was used to define accurately the self-weight consolidation process in terms of dissipation of excess pore water pressure. A consolidometer setup was used to define the compressibility of this material during the self-weight consolidation. Experimental results were reproduced with the numerical model CS2 which considers the self-weight consolidation and large strains. Following a few adjustments of the constitutive relationships, the numerical reproduction is clear; it represents closely the experimental results. This made it possible to document certain elements that were not well defined in the technical literature about the self-weight consolidation. The use of the finite element model SIGMA/W and its capability to consider self-weight consolidation within a tailings deposition scheme were evaluated. Firstly, the model capabilities were verified through 1D simulations that helped to document the method to adopt to model the self-weight consolidation. The formulation of SIGMA/W related to the sequential tailings placement was also studied during this phase. A comparison with the model CS4 was also performed. Secondly, the tailings disposal facility was modeled at large scale by including the sequential tailings placement and the consideration of the self-weight consolidation for each deposition. This process allowed evaluating the capabilities of SIGMA/W in large scale analysis. It appears that this numerical tool presents some numerical weaknesses especially with regards to the sequential tailings placement. Moreover, the results of this study place the self-weight consolidation of hard rock thickened mine tailings as an important mechanism that needs to be considered in a deposition scheme as it controls the short term displacements of the impoundment. Finally, they document the self-weight consolidation mechanism and provide reliable information for modelling this process in one or two-dimensional numerical analysis.

The Federal Constitution of 1988 enshrined education as a right of all, including expressing that the State must guarantee its access to the highest levels, giving universities the possibility of autonomy in didactic-scientific, administrative and financial and patrimonial management, through the annual reserve of sufficient resources for its maintenance and development. However, the values allocated to higher education are scarce and do not meet the needs and challenges of institutions, which can lead to their stagnation, precariousness of their structure, equipment obsolescence and a decrease in the quality of services. For this to be avoided, it is necessary to increase your budget, which can be achieved through the raising of external resources. Given this context, what strategies of fundraising could be applied in the UFCG, considering the context of its different Teaching Centers? The general objective of this study is to analyze and present strategies for raising external resources applicable to the UFCG, considering the context of its different Teaching Centers, in order to collaborate so that its sustainability and financial autonomy can be achieved, making possible the overcoming of budgetary constraints. For this, an exploratory, descriptive and multi-case study was performed through the qualitative analysis, whose data were collected through questionnaires with the directors of the Centers that compose the university. Through the results, it was possible to carry out the organizational diagnosis of the university, to raise its investment needs, to demonstrate the strategies of fundraising, to discover the difficulties in its adoption and to verify the aptitude of the directors in the implementation of other strategies still not used. Finally, a plan of action was drawn up that allows the implementation of strategies to attract external resources in an institutionalized way.
