Este estudo consiste numa análise da tradução do romance Tistifil Miril Strib, de Rachid Daif, proposta por nós, do árabe ao português brasileiro. Com base no trabalho de Antoine Berman, A Tradução e a Letra, ou o Albergue do Longínquo, selecionaram-se decisões tradutórias que demonstrassem o nosso esforço em realizar uma tradução que levasse em conta o objetivo ético do traduzir, acolhendo o Estrangeiro que reside no texto original. Com essa finalidade, analisou-se a ação de três tendências deformadoras próprias da tradução da prosa literária, que agem sobre os traços mais característicos desse romance; são elas: 1) o empobrecimento quantitativo; 2) a destruição ou a exotização das redes de linguagens vernaculares; e 3) o apagamento das superposições de línguas. Em seguida, avalia-se até que ponto se consegue evitar essas forças deformadoras que afastam a tradução de seu objetivo ético, uma vez que destroem a letra do texto, isto é, a sua forma, em favor da transmissão do sentido. Conclui-se que, embora o tradutor tenha consciência da atuação dessas tendências durante o processo tradutório, esse não consegue se libertar plenamente delas. No entanto, isso não o impede de encontrar soluções que possibilitem a manifestação das estranhezas e das particularidades do texto original na língua de chegada, obedecendo à ética da tradução / The purpose of this study is to analyze the translation, proposed by us, of the novel Tistifil Miril Strib by Rashid Al-Daif, from Arabic into Brazilian Portuguese. Based on the theory proposed by Antoine Berman in his work La traduction et la lettre, ou Lauberge du lointain, we selected some of our translation decisions so as to demonstrate the effort of performing a translation with the ethical goal of hosting the foreigner who inhabits the source text. In order to do so, we analyze the action of three deforming tendencies typical of translating literary prose, which affect the inherent character of this novel. They are as follow: 1) quantitative impoverishment; 2) the destruction of vernacular networks or their exoticization; and 3) the effacement of the superimposition of languages. Then, we consider how well we can neutralize these deforming forces, which keep the translation away from its ethical aim by destroying the text letter, its form, so as to keep the content transmission. To summarize, even though the translator is conscious of how these tendencies work during the translation process, he cannot free himself completely from these forces. However, this does not stop him from finding solutions that enable the manifestation of the strangeness and particularities of the source text, within the target language, according to the ethics of translation

A review of lunar communications and antennas: assessing performance in the context of propagation and radiation

Yes / Over the previous two decades, a notable array of space exploration missions have been initiated with the primary aim of facilitating the return of both humans and robots from Earth to the moon. The significance of these endeavors cannot be emphasized enough as numerous entities, both public and private, from across the globe have invested substantial resources into this pursuit. Researchers have committed their efforts to addressing the challenges linked to lunar communication. Even with all of these efforts, only a few of the many suggested designs for communication and antennas on the moon have been evaluated and compared. These designs have also not been shared with the scientific community. To bridge this gap in the existing body of knowledge, this paper conducts a thorough review of lunar surface communication and the diverse antenna designs employed in lunar communication systems. This paper provides a summary of the findings presented in lunar surface communication research while also outlining the assorted challenges that impact lunar communication. Apart from various antenna designs reported in this field, based on their intended usage, two additional classifications are introduced: (a) mission-based antennas-utilized in actual lunar missions-and (b) research-based antennas-employed solely for research purposes. Given the critical need to comprehend and predict lunar conditions and antenna behaviors within those conditions, this review holds immense significance. Its relevance is particularly pronounced in light of the numerous upcoming lunar missions that have been announced. / This work is part of the “Performance Evaluation of Lunar Rashid Rover Communication System” research project, supported by the University of Dubai.

Br(others) only : Rashid Johnson, class, and the fraternal orders of Afrofuturism

Br(others) Only conceptualizes the wall sculptures of Rashid Johnson as free-standing “altars” that play with different and sometimes divergent brands of black masculinity and classed homosociality. Primarily, I analyze three of Johnson’s sculptures from the late 2000s: I Who Have Nothing (2008); I’m Still in Love with You (2008); and Souls of Black Folk (2010). I argue that, by invoking the history of black renaissance men, gentlemen scholars, and entertainers, Johnson’s work plays with various kinds of black masculinity and homosociality that simultaneously straddle the past and future. By doing so, his art not only enacts a racialized temporality, but it also chips away at monolithic notions of black masculinity by fabricating contradictory amalgams of race, class, and gender. For my analysis of Johnson’s artworks, I utilize Cassandra Jackson’s Violence, Visual Culture, and the Black Male Body (2010) as the chief framework for conceptualizing the waxy coats of Johnson’s sculptures as wounded bodies in an effort to “flesh out” the vulnerability of black men. Theorizing the putrescent surfaces of Johnson’s sculptures as violable bodies allows me to consider the ruptures between seemingly impenetrable black masculinity and the always-present vulnerability of the black male body to violence. / text

Continuity and change in the concept of freedom through three generations of the modern Arab Renaissance (Nahda)

This thesis traces the development of the concept of freedom through three generations of the Modern Arab Renaissance (Nahda). The first chapter challenges the claim that the concept of freedom, in the sense of a political right, was absent from Arab thought prior to the French occupation of Egypt (1798-1801). ‘Abd al-Rahman al-Jabarti’s (1754-1825/6) chronicle of the occupation reveals that he possessed the concept of freedom despite the lack of an Arabic word to identify it. Therefore, when Rifa’a Rafi’ al-Tahtawi (1801-73) translated the French term liberté into Arabic, through a semantic expansion of the word hurriyah, he was naming rather than introducing the concept. The second chapter turns to Syria and examines how Butrus al-Bustani’s (1819-83) advocacy of the freedom of conscience (hurriyat al-damir) as an individual right reflects the influence of his American missionary mentors. However, while the missionaries used this concept to defend their narrow sectarian interests, Bustani believed that the freedom of all citizens must be protected equally by a secular government. The third chapter follows two Syrian friends, Muhammad Rashid Rida (1865-1935) and Farah Antun (1874-1922), who migrated to Egypt where their differing visions of reform brought them into conflict on the pages of their respective literary journals. While Antun argued that secularism provides the best guarantee of freedom, Rida contended that true freedom is only found in Islam. Despite this divide, they shared the same fundamental understanding of the value and meaning of freedom. This chapter shows that the concept of freedom is compatible with differing political ideologies while maintaining its core semantic field. Although there were some changes in how Arab intellectuals conceived of freedom during the nineteenth century, this study demonstrates that there was considerable continuity. / text
