Reading for the dog : a reading skills method?

Dirfeldt, Rebecka, Persson, Cecilia January 2008 (has links)
Since we came in contact with a newspaper article about children who were reading for special trained dogs, our curiosity for how we could use animals in teaching purposes was awaken. Our starting point is too study how the children can train theirs reading training skills. We delimited our study to the younger children, in second grade, and their experiences of reading aloud to an animal. We chose to do a qualitative study there we used interviews; we interviewed sex students, because we were interested to study the students understandings and thoughts about reading for an animal. In the result we saw that when the students talked about the reading experience they all mention that it was funny to read to their dog. Someone described it like it was the same as reading for the parents or teacher and some answered that it was harder to read to the dog because the dog couldn´t help with pronunciations or wrong readings. The students gave answer that pointed towards that animals can affect the teaching environment positively. The literature that we reed means that children see animals as their friends and they can easily create a relation to the animals. Animals have a calming effect on children which we got confirmed through the interview answers. In the literature it emerged that animals are important communication partners for children. Within the socioculturel perspective emphasizes the learning within a social interaction. Our conclusion is that closeness to animals, to which the children have a close relation to, can make content method to the reading training skills

The Relationship Between Reading Environment and Reading Effectiveness in Early Childhood

Unknown Date (has links)
The purpose of this study was to understand the relationship among home reading environment, kindergarten classroom reading environment and Child’s effects for reading, regardless of socio-economic status(SES).Their Child’s effects for reading includes young children reading attitudes, young children reading behavior and young children reading ability. Their literacy includes phonological awareness, word recognition, and reading comprehension. A total of 130 five-year-old young children and their teachers from public kindergartens participating in this study in Taipei, were given the Questionnaire of home reading environment and kindergarten classroom reading environment for their parents and teachers, and checklist of young children reading behavior for their parents and teachers. At last, individual test Child’s effects for reading one by one had been conducted (including young children reading attitudes, young children reading ability─phonological awareness, word recognition, and reading comprehension.). The results showed that the higher the socio-economic status, the better their young children reading behavior, and phonological awareness, but there is no differences in young children reading attitudes, word recognition, and reading comprehension. In addition, the home reading environment and child’s effects for reading have no significant correlation. The kindergarten classroom reading environments and child’s effects for reading have no statistically significantly relationship, only 「Support-to-read teaches」and young children reading behavior have statistically significant relationship. In this study, statistical analysis of the results and discussion for parents, kindergarten teachers and future research recommendations, is looking forward to helping Child’s effects for reading in the home reading environment and kindergarten classroom reading environment.

The Relationships among Reading Environment, Playfulness, Creative Parenting and Technological Creativity of the Third and Fifth Graders

Hsin Hsin,Wang Unknown Date (has links)
The main purpose of this study was to explore the relationships among reading environment, playfulness, creative parenting, and technological creativity of the third and fifth graders. The participants included 374 pupils from the elementary schools in Taipei City. The employed instruments in this study were the Test of Technological Creativity, the Inventory of Reading Environment in Family, the Inventory of Reading Environment in the Classroom, the Inventory of Playfulness, the Inventory of Creative Parenting. The employed analysis methods included Descriptives, One-Way Multiple Analysis of Variance, and Structural Equation Modeling. The main findings of this study were as follows: 1.While the girls of the third and fifth graders perceived higher degree of creative parenting than did the boys, the boys outperformed the girls in technological creativity, especially in the “visual design”. No gender differences in reading environment and playfulness were found, however. 2.There were significant grade differences in reading environment, playfulness, creative parenting, and technological creativity. More specifically, the fifth graders outperformed the third graders in technological creativity, but perceived lower degree of reading environment, playfulness, and creative parenting than did the third graders. 3.The third graders’ reading environment in family had a little positive effect on their performance of technological creativity. One the contrary, the fifth graders’ reading environment in family had a great positive effect on their performance of technological creativity, especially on that of “elaboration”. 4.The reading environment in the classroom had a positive effect on the third graders’ performance of technological creativity, especially on that of “visual design”. Such an effect, however, was not found among the fifth graders. 5.Playfulness had significant effects on both the third and fifth graders’ performance of technological creativity. More specifically, playfulness had positive effects on the scores of “elaboration” and “visual design” among the third graders and had positive effects on those of “fluency” and “elaboration” among the fifth graders. 6.Creative parenting had a positive effect on the fifth graders’ overall performance of technological creativity as well as on the score of “elaboration”. However, the positive effect of creative parenting was only found on score of “visual design” in the third grade. 7.While reading environment, playfulness, and creative parenting were effective predictors of the third graders’ performance in “visual design”, they were effective predictors of the fifth graders’ performance in “elaboration”. 8.The findings in this study suggest that the third and fifth graders’ personal trait of playfulness directly influence their development of technological creativity; meanwhile, their reading environment and creative parenting may influence their development of technological creativity directly or indirectly via playfulness. Finally, the researcher proposed some suggestions for educational instructions and future studies.
