An investigation into students reading attitudes and habits using a children’s literature intervention programme

Thraves, Philip January 2010 (has links)
Thesis (Magister Technologiae (Education))--Cape Peninsula University of Technology, 2010 / This study traces the effects of a children’s literature intervention on first year B Ed students’ reading habits and attitudes. A review of relevant literature includes concepts of literacy, with specific reference to family literacy, adolescent literacy and critical literacy; effective literacy practices; reading, reader response and theoretical perspectives of literature, including children’s literature, and its application in the classroom; motivation and reader-identity. A variety of quantitative and qualitative methods were used to gather data over a period of eighteen months. The data captured attitudes to reading and traced changes in attitudes, habits and motivation resulting from an intervention that required students to engage in reading a range of children’s literature texts. Findings showed movement from apathy to engagement at the lowest levels of change and from extrinsic to intrinsic motivation at successive levels of change. Most significantly, the intervention caused discontinuous (permanent) change in students’ constructions of themselves as readers. Key words: critical literacy; adolescent literacy; reader response; children’s literature; extrinsic / intrinsic motivation; discontinuous change; reader identity.

Vybrané aktivizační metody práce s textem v multikulturní výchově / Selected activating methods of incorporating text in multicultural education

Nouzáková, Barbora January 2021 (has links)
The thesis is concerned with activating methods in multicultural education. The focus is mainly on incorporating text. The theoretical part, therefore, deals with multicultural education, reading, text and basic concepts that relate to these. Furthermore, the crucial part is enumeration and description of methods that can be implemented to activate students. The aim of the practical part is to investigate what methods are used in multicultural education by teachers at primary and secondary schools in the Czech Republic. Another objective is to map whether and how they work with texts. For the purposes of the work, quantitative research and a questionnaire as methods of data collection were selected. The practical output is a series of worksheets based on incorporating text that can serve as inspiration for other teachers. KEY WORDS: multicultural education, competence, method, reading, text

Revising English 01: the creation of a developmental reading and writing course

Capps, John S. 06 June 2008 (has links)
Bartholomae contends that "a reading course is necessarily a writing course and a writing course must be a course in reading." At most community colleges, however, reading and writing are still taught as if they were independent of each other. The course on which this curriculum study is based, English 07, Writing and Reading Improvement, represents a revision of that traditional approach, for it combines instruction in reading and writing to create a comprehensive class in developmental English. This dissertation describes the salient pedagogical features of English 07, from its rejection of the skills approach to language instruction to its treatment of reading and writing as complementary activities. The results of this study indicate that teaching reading with writing in the same course can be a viable alternative to teaching these skills separately. Success rates of students in English 07 consistently exceeded those of students enrolled in more traditional classes in which reading and writing remained isolated from one another. English 07 students also enjoyed a relatively high rate of success in subsequent first year English classes, approaching a level of achievement equal to that of students in the general population of the college. In addition, the study revealed several curricular elements that seem to have been unusually important in helping students develop their literate abilities. The course's emphasis upon reading and writing as complementary processes of composition, its thematic focus upon the self, the structure and sequence of reading and writing assignments, and the social relations in the classroom all emerged as significant influences in students' attempts to transform themselves into literate members of the academy. Clowes notes that successful integration "little evidence exists of developmental theory for the into the practice of remediation," and Berthoff asserts that "we need more research in teaching reading and writing together." This study answers those calls by demonstrating how reading and writing can be melded together to create an effective developmental English course. This dissertation should thus provide other community-college practitioners with an immediate theoretical framework and a model curriculum for helping students become more proficient readers and more accomplished writers. / Ed. Podpora čtenářství a rozvoj čtenářských kompetencí u žáků s poruchou autistického spektra / Support for reading and development of reading competencies of pupils with autistic spectrum disorder

Drastilová, Melanie January 2019 (has links)
This diploma thesis focuses on the support of reading and development of reading competences of pupils with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). The theoretical part first discusses individuals with autism spectrum disorder, characteristics of diagnosis and their education. The next section generally summarizies the concepts related to reading. It also looks at the role of the school, teacher and literary eduacation in the development and support of reading. It further discusses teaching methods, which develop reading comprehension. The last part focuces specifically on the reading skills of children with ASD. The part concludes with deficits in reading for meaning and reading comprehension interventions. The aim of this thesis was to find out how teachers develop reading skills for pupils with ASD in primary school. The data was obtained from structured interviews with teachers working with pupils with ASD. The research questions were focused on the level of support for reading by teachers, the specifics of working with pupils with ASD and the use of texts related to student's interests and experiences. Research suggests that teachers don't have much information about the reading comprehension of children with ASD. They are based on their own experience. The experiences of teachers show that children...

No. of bitstreams: 1 Milena Marques Micossi.pdf: 1485954 bytes, checksum: 300656afa62b8131ba4363f41545c2a3 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2018-09-13 / The present research aims at investigating how teachers’ continuing professional development is able to bring about reflection and contribute to the change of literacy teachers’ practices in municipal schools in the city of São Paulo. The development policy within this context is guided by the training suppositions of the Pacto Nacional pela Alfabetização na Idade Certa – PNAIC (National Pact for Literacy at the Right Age). To look into how continuing professional development can contribute to the change of teachers’ activity, the study proposes the analysis of aspects of the training route which may promote reflection and eventual change. It also investigates the action of the former as a mediator in the process of reconstructing and resignifying literacy teachers’ methods, as well as identifies whether there were changes in practice through continuing professional development offered and measured by the suppositions of PNAIC. The theoretical background deployed is composed by Freitas (2007), Placco and Souza (2015), Larrosa (2002), Almeida (2002) and Tardif (2014). The study was conducted at a municipal school of basic education in the region of São Mateus, East Zone of São Paulo. The subjects of the research are five literacy teachers who took part in the 2016’s continuing professional development program. The methodology is qualitative, with the objective of studying the contingencies of the subjects under actual working conditions. Data was collected through a questionnaire and individual and collective interviews, always semi-structured. The analysis of the data has revealed that continuing professional development will likely promote change of practices as long as the professional and formative trajectory of the teachers is taken as a starting point for the reflections, being teaching activity itself the object of study and investigation in the face of the proposition of a formative itinerary which favors meaningful experiences that affect the former and leads to looking for new pedagogical practices. For this purpose, the study has also confirmed that the development must establish dialogical processes which emphasize an active listening and an attentive look from the former towards the groups of teachers, breaking with the conceptual and pragmatic deconstruction discourse to promote the pragmatic resignification mediated by teachers’ trajectory discourse. The research has also testified that the practice as the object of study has fostered its approximation to the theoretical basis, which aroused, besides legitimating literacy teachers’ work, changes of teaching activity in the literacy period / A presente pesquisa tem por objetivo investigar como a formação continuada docente pode contribuir para a reflexão e mudanças das práticas dos professores alfabetizadores da Rede Municipal de São Paulo.
