Effects of feeding nucleotides with corn germ meal or dried corn distillers grains on receiving and growing calves

DeTray, Monika L. January 1900 (has links)
Master of Science / Department of Animal Sciences and Industry / Dale A. Blasi / Effects of nucleotides (NA) (PSB Complex; DSS Global, Chicago, IL) with corn germ meal (CGM) or dried corn distillers grains (DDG) on growth performance, digestibility, in vitro ruminal gas production, and mucosal immunity were analyzed in 4 experiments. In Exp. 1, 213 crossbred heifers (BW= 262 ± 67.4 kg) were used in a complete block design with a 3 x 2 factorial arrangement of treatments to determine the net energy values of CGM in comparison to DDG and the effects of NA at three inclusion levels (0, 2, and 4 g) during an 84-d receiving period. Pens were randomly assigned to one of six treatments: 1) CGM with no NA (CGM0), 2) CGM with 2 g/heifer daily NA (CGM2), 3) CGM with 4 g/heifer daily NA (CGM4), 4) DDG with no NA (DDG0), 5) DDG with 2 g/heifer daily NA (DDG2), and 6) DDG with 4 g/heifer daily NA (DDG4). There were no significant effects of NA or the type of corn byproduct on growth performance (P ≥ 0.15). Exp. 2, was conducted to determine the performance and mucosal immunity effects of NA using 240 crossbred heifers (BW= 268 ± 34.1 kg). Pens were randomly assigned to three treatments which consisted of diets 4, 5 and 6 from Exp. 1. Calves were blocked by weight and assigned to a pen for 56-d. There were no significant effects of NA on growth performance results (P ≥ 0.18). On d 28, fecal samples were collected from approximately 5 calves from each pen and analyzed for secretory IgA concentration. NA inclusion did not affect fecal IgA concentration (P = 0.15). Exp. 3, utilized 4 ruminally cannulated Holstein heifers in a 4 x 4 Latin square design. The four treatments included diets 1 and 4 from Exp. 1 along with those two diets supplemented with 3 g/heifer daily NA. Ruminal pH increased as NA was included (P < 0.05). Ammonia concentrations were greater for DDG than for CGM (P < 0.01). Ruminal propionate concentration was less in diets that contained NA (P < 0.05). DDG diets led to greater concentrations of butyrate, isobutyrate, isovalerate, and valerate in ruminal fluid than CGM diets (P < 0.01). Valerate concentrations were decreased by NA when included in DDG diets, but not when added to CGM diets (interaction, P < 0.01). Isovalerate concentrations were increased by NA when included in CGM diets, but not when added to DDG diets (interaction, P = 0.01). An in vitro study, Exp. 4, evaluated 24-h gas production effects of the 6 treatments in Exp. 1. Gas production was decreased linearly by the inclusion of NA in DDG diets, but it was unaffected by NA in CGM diets (interaction, P < 0.01). CGM can be included in receiving and growing diets at 24.5% on a DM basis in place of DDG while maintaining growth performance, digestibility, and gas production. There was no effect of NA on growth performance, digestibility, or mucosal immunity, but there was an effect on ruminal gas production and ruminal parameters. Further research is needed to determine the effects of NA on receiving and growing cattle.

Design of multiple frequency continuous wave radar hardware and micro-Doppler based detection and classification algorithms

Anderson, Michael Glen, 1979- 29 August 2008 (has links)
Micro-Doppler is defined as scattering produced by non-rigid-body motion. This dissertation involves the design of a multiple frequency continuous wave (MFCW) radar for micro-Doppler research and detection and classification algorithm design. First, sensor hardware is developed and tested. Various design tradeoffs are considered, with the application of micro-Doppler based detection and classification in mind. A diverse database of MFCW radar micro-Doppler signatures was collected for this dissertation. The micro-Doppler signature database includes experimental data from human, vehicle, and animal targets. Signatures are acquired from targets with varying ranges, velocities, approach angles, and postures. The database is analyzed for micro-Doppler content with a focus on its application to target classification. Joint time-frequency detection algorithms are developed to improve detection performance by exploiting noise-spreading and the micro-Doppler phenomenon. Following detection algorithm development, this dissertation covers the design of micro- Doppler feature extraction, feature selection, and classification algorithms. Feature selection is performed automatically via a Fisher score initialized sequential backward selection algorithm. Classification is performed using two distinct approaches: a generative statistical classification algorithm based on Gaussian mixture models (GMMs) and a discriminative statistical classification algorithm based on support vector machines (SVMs). Classifier performance is analyzed in detail on a micro-Doppler signature database acquired over a three-year period. Both the SVM and GMM classifiers perform well on the radar target classification task (high accuracy, low nuisance alarm probability, high F-measure, etc.). The performance of both classifiers is remarkably similar, and neither algorithm dominates the other in any performance metric when using the chosen feature set. (However, the difference between SVM and GMM classification accuracy becomes statistically significant when many redundant features are present in the feature set.) The accuracy of both classifiers is shown to vary as a function of approach angle, which physically corresponds to the angular dependence of micro-Doppler. The results suggest that overall classifier performance is more sensitive to feature selection than classifier selection (with GMM being more sensitive to redundant features than SVM). Both classifiers are robust enough to handle human targets attempting to evade detection by either army crawling or hands-and-knees crawling. / text

Le droit relatif à la prévention des risques d’incendie et de panique dans les établissements recevant du public en France / The law relating to the prevention of fire and panic hazards in establishments receiving the public in France

Feliciangeli, Anne-Claire 24 November 2017 (has links)
The subject of this thesis is the analysis of the law governing the measures taken by the State to ensure security and, more recently, the safety in the Establishments Receiving the Public (ERP). Due to the major economic and social role of ERPs particularly targeted by terrorist acts, the Government has legislated for the safeguarding of persons and the protection of property against fire risks and threats. This work deals with legally imperfect regulatory texts, whereas before the administrative courts the liability of the State is incurred in the event of a dispute. This research diagnoses areas of this administrative law that have reached their limits. Administratively and technically, this legislation has become complex and difficult to assume from an institutional, financial and legislative point of view. An interministerial mission concluded that a major reform of the enforceable rights against ERPs is not feasible. However, since recently changes have been undertaken in the french law that this study takes into account and proposes another way to simplify, modernize and correct the existing law. This involves removing existing imperfections, pooling the security and safety resources available in the ERPs and changing the current model towards a more liberal and jurisprudential right.

Online cancer support: What the consumer has to say

Rapach, Erin Elizabeth 10 July 2009 (has links)
Although the research on the effects of cancer on the patient and its impact on the family system, as well as on the benefits of support groups for this population is abundant, there is relatively little research that examines the benefits of online cancer support groups, the meaning that users attribute to giving and receiving support, and the effects of use on the user's significant other. Using the theoretical frameworks of phenomenology, and Social Interactionism online surveys were conducted with seven individuals who considered themselves active members of the online Cancer Survivors Network, were all diagnosed with cancer and living with a significant other. These surveys were coded for themes using Thematic Analysis. The main themes identified included: feeling normal, belonging to a community, hope, honest and open place to talk about fears, feelings and possibility of death, that experiencing and recovering or dealing with cancer is a process, gaining understanding, acceptance and support, as well as information, a better sense of well-being related to hope and humor, and feeling helpful. The themes that emerged when looking at the partner relationships were: feelings of jealousy, and sharing the online community with their partner. Implications for clinical practice and suggestions for future research are included. / Master of Science
