El texto completo de este trabajo no está disponible en el Repositorio Académico UPC por restricciones de la casa editorial donde ha sido publicado. / n this article, the geotechnical behavior of the reinforced soil is studied through additions of polypropylene fiber and recycled glass powder, this in order to obtain a homogeneously reinforced soil matrix to reduce possible structural failures, differential settlements and increase capacity bearing. The sample used was classified as a clay soil with low plasticity (CL) and with moderately expansive characteristics, based on the values of the Liquid Limit, Plastic Limit and Plasticity Index. The effect of the 1% polypropylene fiber and different amounts of recycled glass powder (0%, 4%, 5%, 6.5%), with respect to dry weight is analyzed in this soil. The purpose of varying the quantity of these materials is to find a trend of the strength parameters and obtain the optimal percentages that provides improvements in geotechnical behavior. Modified Proctor and Direct Shear tests were carried out, this latter to obtain the shear strength parameters of the mixtures and compare them with the clay soil. Finally, the optimal result for soil improvement was the mixture made by 1% polypropylene fiber and 4% glass powder, which achieved an increase of the angle of friction and cohesion.

Efficacy of recycled glass cullet as a soil substrate for U.S. Gulf Coast salt marsh restorationLevine, Ansley 13 August 2024 (has links) (PDF)
Recycled glass cullet is a potential alternative to fill substrate in salt marsh restoration projects, given its similarity to natural silica sands. However, the ability for common salt marsh plants to grow in glass cullet has not yet been tested. An outdoor mesocosm experiment assessed the ability of the dominant mid-marsh plant Juncus roemerianus and the upland marsh plant Spartina patens to grow in various mixtures of glass cullet versus fill soil. Results showed that J. roemerianus can survive in glass cullet, but growth declined as the proportion of cullet increased. However, S. patens grew comparably, if not better, in treatments up to 75% glass cullet. In the face of increased coastal land loss and a global sediment deficit, the use of glass cullet in upland salt marsh restoration projects can simultaneously divert glass from landfills and promote more sustainable coastal restoration strategies along the northern Gulf of Mexico.

Thermo-mechanical behaviour of a novel lightweight concrete and its application in masonry wallsAl-Sibahy, Adnan Flayih Hassan January 2012 (has links)
The development of lightweight concretes has made a contribution to advances in structural design. It would be useful to further improve the mechanical properties of lightweight concrete formulations whilst enhancing their resistance to fire degradation and reduced thermal conductivity. Improving the sustainability of any new proposed lightweight concrete formulation is desirable, for example by the inclusion of waste stream components into the formulation.This thesis describes an investigation of the mechanical, thermal and fire resistance properties of a new type of expanded clay lightweight concrete formulation in which varying quantities of sand are replaced by crushed glass aggregate, in conjunction with the addition of metakaolin (which may be available as a waste component from the manufacture of paper) as a partial replacement for the cement. The investigation involved short and long-term laboratory testing of a range of mechanical and thermal properties of individual concrete formulations and small scale structural elements consisting of masonry blocks made from these formulations (so called wallettes). An extensive programme of Finite Element Analysis using Abaqus was also performed.The results obtained show that it is possible to produce a structural expanded clay lightweight concrete that possesses good thermal properties by incorporating of ground glass and metakaolin. Compressive and splitting tensile strengths, as well as the modulus of elasticity, increased with an increase in the metakaolin content, while concrete density decreased. Reductions in thermal conductivity and improvements in fire resistance criteria were also observed in comparison with conventional lightweight concrete mixtures. For example, measured thermal conductivity values ranged from 0.092 W/m.K to 0.177 W/m.K, and the insulation criterion (an indicator of resistance to fire) reached up to 110 minutes for a concrete member with a thickness of 29 mm. The highest resistance to the effects of high temperatures was observed for concrete mixes containing either 15% or 30% recycled glass with 10% metakaolin.The maximum axial loads at failure were 474 kN and 558 kN for reference and modified wallettes respectively, implying corresponding bearing capacities of 7.1 MPa and 8.3 MPa. The critical path of the failure mode was similar for all of the wallettes tested and normally began underneath the load point, then passed through the concrete blocks and head joint to reach the toe of the wallette. The masonry wallettes formulated using reference lightweight concrete blocks exhibited failure due to explosive spalling at 400 oC with no applied mechanical load, whereas the second type of masonry wallettes (the modified wallettes) did not show such behaviour.The results of Finite Element Analysis showed that the coefficient of thermal convection had the most influence upon the insulation criterion. From a structural perspective, the key parameters were the value of penalty stiffness and imperfections in wallette construction. In general, a close agreement between the measured and simulated results was observed for both the thermal and structural finite element models at ambient and high temperatures.

Previous issue date: 2012-04-10 / In this work, the effect of sodium hydroxide as a glass foaming agent using glass waste in the foam formulation was performed. During the synthesis process, the variation of temperature, heating rate and sintering time was investigated. Sample density and average pore sizes were estimated using mercury porosimetry. The morphology of the glass foams were evaluated using scanning electron microscopy, phase formation was studied using X-ray diffraction, and chemical composition was estimated using X-ray fluorescence. As a result, glass foam with hierarchical density. / Neste trabalho foi realizado um estudo sobre a ação do hidróxido de sódio como agente formador de espuma vítrea usando resíduos de vidro em sua composição. Para a síntese, investigou-se a variação da temperatura, da taxa de aquecimento e do tempo de sinterização. Utilizando-se a técnica de porosimetria de mercúrio, para estimar a densidade e o tamanho médio de poros. A morfologia das espumas vítreas foi avaliada através da microscopia eletrônica de varredura de alta resolução (FEG) e as fases das espumas vítreas foram caracterizadas pelas técnicas de difração de raios X e a composição química estimada usando fluorescência de raios X.

Part of the thesis was also focused on grindability of materials and determination of using separate or inters grinding.

Los resultados del estudio que se expone en la presente tesis, tratan sobre las arcillas expansivas en “Talara”, en base a resultados obtenidos en los ensayos de laboratorio como el Análisis Granulométrico por Tamizado, ensayo de Límite Líquido, Límite Plástico e Índice de Plasticidad, ensayo de Proctor modificado y el ensayo Corte Directo. Cabe decir que dichos ensayos se realizaron tomando como punto de partida las características geológicas, geomorfológicas, geotécnicas y la evaluación de daños en las diversas estructuras de la zona como viviendas producto de la expansión y consolidación del terreno. La problemática se origina a raíz del suelo arcilloso, ya que la principal característica que puede tener ese tipo de suelo es que sea un suelo expansivo, por lo tanto, se debe tener en consideración mejorar el suelo para evitar posteriormente daños estructurales. En la investigación se describirán las principales consecuencias y factores que intervienen en el fenómeno de la expansión y el cómo enfrentar a este tipo de suelo. El presente estudio busca la mejora del suelo mediante una técnica innovadora, eco amigable y factible como es la estabilización física usando el vidrio reciclado y las fibras de polipropileno (materiales de desecho en las operaciones de la construcción), ya que en la actualidad estos dos tipos de materiales generan un impacto negativo en el medio ambiente, por lo cual se trata de reutilizar dichos materiales en el mejoramiento del suelo. El estudio se basó en una muestra de suelo medianamente expansivo, debido al registro del Límite Líquido, Límite Plástico e Índice de Plasticidad, extraído de la Urbanización Sudamérica, localizado en Talara, Piura con el fin de mejorarlo, para luego verificar el comportamiento de mejora de las propiedades de resistencia al corte del suelo. Como parte del desarrollo de la investigación se realizaron los diversos ensayos para comprobar con datos numéricos la mejora del suelo, otorgando porcentajes de sustitución con respecto al peso seco (0%, 5%, 6% y 7.5%) a la muestra en estado natural. Finalmente, se obtuvieron las mejoras de las propiedades de resistencia al corte con un porcentaje de sustitución equivalente a 5%, el cual registra las mejoras en cohesión y ángulo de fricción. / The results of the study that is presented in this thesis, deals with the expansive clays in "Talara", based on results obtained in laboratory tests such as the Granulometric Analysis by Screening, Liquid Limit test, Plastic Limit and Plasticity Index, modified Proctor test and the Direct Cut test. It is possible to say that these tests were carried out taking as a starting point the geological, geomorphological, geotechnical characteristics and the evaluation of damages in the different structures of the area as houses product of the expansion and consolidation of the land. The problem originates from the clay soil, since the main characteristic that this type of soil can have is that it is an expansive soil, therefore, it is necessary to consider improving the soil to subsequently avoid structural damage. The research will describe the main consequences and factors involved in the phenomenon of expansion and how to deal with this type of soil. The present study seeks to improve the soil through an innovative, eco-friendly and feasible technique such as physical stabilization using recycled glass and polypropylene fibers (waste materials in construction operations), since these two are currently Types of materials generate a negative impact on the environment, so it is about reusing these materials in soil improvement. As part of the development of the research, the various tests were carried out to verify the improvement of the soil with numerical data, granting replacement percentages with respect to dry weight (0%, 5%, 6% and 7.5%) to the sample in its natural state . Finally, the improvements of the properties of resistance to the cut with a percentage of substitution equivalent to 5% were obtained, which records the improvements in cohesion and angle of friction. / Tesis
