The physical nature of weak shock reflection

Ashworth, Jason Trevor 31 October 2006 (has links)
Student Number : 9900131F - MSc (Eng) dissertation - School of Mechanical Engineering - Faculty of Engineering / Recent high-resolution numerical studies of weak shock reflections have shown that a complex flow structure exists behind the triple point which consists of multiple shocks, expansion fans and triple points. This region had not been detected earlier in experimental observations or numerical studies of weak shock reflections due to the small size of this region. New components were designed and built to modify an existing large-scale shock tube in order to obtain experimental observations to validate the numerical results. The shock tube produced a large, expanding cylindrical incident wave which was reflected off a 15° corner on the roof of the section to produce a weak shock Mach reflection with a large Mach stem in the test section. The shock tube was equipped with PCB high-speed pressure transducers and digital scope for data acquisition, and a schlieren optical system to visualise the region behind the triple point. The tests were conducted over a range of incident wave Mach numbers (M12 = 1.060-1.094) and produced Mach stems of between 694 mm and 850 mm in length. The schlieren photographs clearly show an expansion fan centered on the triple point in all the successful tests conducted. In some of the more resolved images, a shocklet can be seen terminating the expansion fan, and in others a second expansion fan and/or shocklet can be seen. A ‘von Neumann reflection’ was not visualised experimentally, and hence it has been proposed that the four-wave reflection found in these tests be named a ‘Guderley reflection’. The experimental validation of Hunter & Tesdall’s (2002) work resolves the ‘von Neumann Paradox’.

A Jython-based RESTful Web Service API for Python Code Reflection

Nielson, John A 18 May 2018 (has links)
Often times groups of domain experts, such as scientists and engineers, will develop their own software modules for specialized computational tasks. When these users determine there is a need to integrate the data and computations used in their specialized components with an enterprise data management system, interoperability between the enterprise system and the specialized components rather than re-implementation allows for faster implementation and more flexible change management by shifting the onus of changes to the scientific components to the subject matter experts rather than the enterprise information technology team. The Jython-based RESTful web service API was developed to leverage code reflection to provide access to Python scripts via RESTful web service calls, providing access to any function available in a Python script accessible to the REST server.

The magnificent play of light: seeing the difference

Porritt, Dawn, n/a January 2007 (has links)
Light as a concept is filled with a multitude of interpretations, ideas and possibilities and no matter how technologically progressive we think we are, nature consistently controls our human way of life. We are surrounded by nature and often gain inspiration by the simple things around us. My interest in the phenomena of light and refraction was sparked years ago by Claude Monet?s painting Bathers at La Grenouillere, 1869. It showed simplicity of form and shape, yet emitted a luminosity and radiance of light reflecting off water. This thesis examines the subject of light as an optical phenomenon. My specific aim was to create distorted, ambiguous and conflicting images in my photographs by using the "optical phenomena" of light such as, refraction, diffraction and reflection as a basis for abstracting reality. I wanted to capture the changes that occur when light changes direction due to refractive qualities within a material such as glass, water or plastic, or due to the reflective qualities of a surface. The camera was exploited for its capacity to capture realism, but also to capture and abstract natural phenomenon. The images were enlarged to magnify details and the reality of the physical world was heightened as objects became ambiguous. Design compositional techniques were used to decontextualise objects. I approached this study with the idea that observation and awareness has importance to image making within my design and teaching practice. This thesis presents my project explorations showing the play of light on and through surfaces under different conditions. I have documented this by producing a series of photographic images and a glossary as an aid in the practice of design education.

Ledares sätt att orientera sitt sätt i professionella möten

Molin, Maria, Nääf Spännare, Catrin January 2009 (has links)

Transforming lives through international community service-learning : a case study

Peacock, David Robert 21 September 2009
Through a case study of the experiences of eight undergraduate students participating in the St. Thomas More College/Intercordia Canada international community service-learning programme (2008), this thesis seeks to assess whether the participants learning has proved transformational through an analysis of the forms and processes of transformative learning as developed by Richard Kiely (2002, 2004, 2005). Content analysis of semi-structured student interviews (pre and post-participation), programme materials, student journals, academic reflections and essays reveal transformative shifts across the political, moral, intellectual, cultural, personal and spiritual learning domains. The study adds to the research on international community service-learning through an analysis of Kielys transformative learning theory in a new context, and explores how context affects learning processes. Findings indicate the dynamics of participant vulnerability and acceptance from host communities can provide for transformational relationships of solidarity across difference.
