Infant Oral Health: A Survey of General Dentists, Pediatric Dentists, and Pediatricians in Virginia

Davis, Rhea DelCastillo 01 January 2005 (has links)
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to examine the knowledge, attitudes, and experiences related to infant oral health for both dental and medical providers. Methods: A survey of infant oral health care was sent to 300 randomly selected general dentists, 300 randomly selected pediatricians, and all pediatric dentists in Virginia. The survey contained questions regarding the providers' routine infant oral health care regimen. In addition demographic data from the provider was collected. Responses to the questionnaire were tabulated and percent frequency distributions for responses to each item computed. Percents for all items were based on the total number of respondents in each of the three practitioner groups. Results: The response rate of the survey was 48%. While 100% of pediatricians treat the infant population, only 5% refer for the first dental visit by age one. In addition compared to dentists fewer pediatricians examine for dental decay or give oral hygiene instructions. Less than half of general dentists surveyed treat the infant population and only 12% refer for the first dental visit by age one. Compared to pediatricians and pediatric dentists general dentists were less likely to discuss the first dental visit or nutritional counseling. Amongst the three practitioner types, pediatric dentists provide the most thorough dental exam, however only 25% actually treat infants by one year of age. Access to dental care remains a significant factor in early childhood caries. Conclusion: Results from this research suggest that the majority of pediatricians and general dentists are not advising patients to see the dentist by one year of age. Concurrently the majority of dentists are not treating patients at one year of age, resulting in a critical problem with access to care. There is a need for increased infant oral health care education in the medical and dental communities to appropriately handle this infant population.

Gêneros em projeção: um estudo sobre sexualidades no cinema durante a transição para o século vinte e um / Projecting gender: sexualities in cinema during the transition to the twenty-first century

Bernava, Cristian Carla 26 August 2016 (has links)
This work investigates the emergence of a new regimen of visibility of certain sexual differences portrayed in cinema during the transition to the twenty-first century. Through the filmic analysis of Breaking the Waves (Lars von Trier, 1996), My Life in Pink (Ma vie en Rose, Alain Berliner, 1997), and Brokeback Mountain (Ang Lee, 2005) this research seeks to understand the profound transformations that occurred as a result of the impact of the AIDS crisis both in terms of the construction of a social imaginary of sexual differences as well as the rearrangements of the ways these differences and changes were made visible and were negotiated in this period through film. This analysis takes into consideration the disputes established between hegemonic and counter-hegemonic discourses which followed the political appropriation of cinematographic media by several gay civil rights groups during the 1990s.

Development of multiple dose platforms for oral drug delivery

Thitinan, Sumalee 06 February 2012 (has links)
Multiple dose regimens are frequently required to optimize therapy; however, such therapy is frequently undermined by poor patient adherence. In fact, patient adherence is inversely related to the number of doses a patient is asked to take each drug. Consequently, great efforts are under way to develop drug delivery systems that are able to release drugs over an extended time interval; this could offer considerable benefits including reducing administration frequency. This dissertation describes multiple dose platforms designed to deliver a variety of drugs as a single oral administration are described in this dissertation. We believe these drug delivery systems can be used to enhance patient compliance and achieve better therapeutic outcomes. We developed and tested a novel gastroretentive pulsatile drug delivery platform. This platform could deliver multiple unit doses of a drug in a pulsatile pattern and be controlled by dissolution/erosion of a lag-time interval layer. The platform was designed to be retained in the stomach whilst pulsing drug at various timed intervals. This would allow each dose of the drug to release above or within an optimized absorption window over an extended period of time. To assure the robustness and reproducibility of the platform, various in vitro dissolution studies and physical stability tests were performed and evaluated through drug release characteristics, buoyancy, and structural integrity evaluations. The applicability of the novel multiple dose platform was demonstrated by providing repeated release profiles of ciprofloxacin and verapamil in a single, once-daily delivery system. Ultimately, this dissertation demonstrates that a novel multiple dose platform could be a suitable alternative dosing strategy for a variety of drugs to improve patient adherence and treatment efficacy. / text

The Siamese Fighting Fish is one of the most beautiful and popular fish among aquarists of whole world and his reproduction, just like other species, is affected by environmental factors such temperature and photoperiod. This study investigated the effect of different photoperiods (24L (light):0D (dark), 20L:4D, 16L:8D, 12L:12D and 8L:16D) over B. splendens reproduction. The results showed that breeding frequency was significantly higher in couples reared under 16L:8D and 12L:12D, in comparison to other treatments. The highest values for number of eggs per spawn was obtained under 16L:8D (544,76 ± 375,23 ) and 12L:12D (471,13 ± 261,52) and the lowest values were detected for 24L:0D (128,55 ± 58,14 ) and 20L:4D (187,87 ± 103,84). Fertility and fecundity also showed significantly higher average values in 16L:8D and 12L:12D when compared to 24L:0D and 20L:4D treatments. Breeders maintained under 8L:16D treatment presented intermediate values similar to other treatments. Egg volume and perivitelline space was significantly higher in those treatments that showed the lowest numbers of eggs per spawn, while the vitelline volume don’t showed significantly differences. Other variables like weight gain and condition factor (K) of breeders, were not statistically different. Moreover, the final length varies according to photoperiod and sex. These results demonstrated a key role for the photoperiod upon B. splendens reproduction, the best reproductive performance being achieved under the photoperiods that best approached those that occurs in summer and spring (16L:8D and 12L:12D), coinciding with their best seasons for reproduction

Factors contributing to non-adherence of patients to highly active antiretroviral treatment at Kanyamazane Clinic, Ehlanzeni District, Mpumalanga Province

Mahlalela, Maria Sizakele January 2014 (has links)
Thesis (M.CUR.) --University of Limpopo, 2014. / Background: The national HAART programme in South Africa was launched in April 2004. Highly Active Antiretroviral Therapy (HAART) is the medication that slows down the progression from HIV to AIDS, while it had been introduced in Western countries in 1996. Adherence to ART is the major factor in ensuring the virologic success of an initial regimen and is a significant determinant of survival for HIV-infected patients with the wild type virus who are on highly active antiretroviral treatment. Patients with suboptimal adherence are at risk, not only of HIV progression but also of the development of drug resistance and consequent narrowing of options for future treatment. Sub-Saharan Africa carries the highest burden of HIV infections and HIV / AIDS related mortality in the world. South Africa is reported to have the largest population living with the HIV infection. Aims: The aim of the study was to explore factors that contributed to non- adherence of patients to HAART at the Kanyamazane Clinic, Ehlanzeni District, Mpumalanga Province. Study method: A qualitative, exploratory, descriptive, and contextual research design was used for this study. A non-probability purposive sampling method was used to select participants ranging from 15 to 60 years of age and who were on HAART for more than one year. Fifteen participants were selected and the sample size was determined by data saturation. Semi-structured interviews were conducted to collect data through the use of an interview guide on their structured follow-up dates and audio recordings of the interviews were made. Data was analysed following the Tesch’s method. Themes and sub-themes were developed. Results: Findings indicate that factors contributing to non-adherence of patients to HAART are the patient-provider relationship and delivery of services, waiting hours and overcrowding, working hours of the facility, forgetfulness and experiencing better health, belief systems, side-effects, pill burden, migration due to employment, poverty and unemployment, as well as disclosure, stigma, and discrimination. Conclusion and recommendations: The study recommends that HAART services should be provided every day, including on weekends, to improve access and to reduce waiting times; and economic empowerment through skills acquisition programmes to participants and provision of jobs to earn a living. Keywords: Non-adherence, highly active antiretroviral treatment, regimen, drug resistance.
