Moving forwards backwards: exploring the impact of active engagement in reminiscence theatre with older adults in residential care with mild to moderate cognitive impairment

Pauluth-Penner, Trudy 01 October 2018 (has links)
This descriptive ethno-theatre case study explored the impact of intergenerational engagement through a reminiscence theatre arts initiative on the psychosocial quality of life for older adults with mild to moderate cognitive decline. Study participants were comprised of 11 adults 65 years and older residing in a dementia-specific residential care facility unit, and 13 University of Victoria Theatre students. Both qualitative and quantitative procedures were integrated into the case study. Qualitative processes consisted of older adult life history interview transcriptions, ethno-theatre field notes of theatre devising and performance processes, and post-program drama evaluations. Quantitative measures included pre- and post-administered instruments: CASP-19; Alzheimer’s Disease-related Quality of Life (ADRQL) – Revised; and older adult health perception surveys. Overall, it appears from the data that active engagement in reminiscence theatre (the process of creating and performing theatre from real life memories and stories) results in a positive impact on older adults’ well-being – increased self-esteem, elevated mood and social engagement, decreased isolation and boredom, and desire to continue with activities. This study’s findings suggest that the integration of reminiscence arts initiatives into residential care plans for older adults with mild to moderate cognitive impairment can substantially enhance psychosocial quality of life. These findings are consistent with reminiscence and life review theory in that intergenerational engagement in these processes promotes healthy aging. This study demonstrated that intergenerational connection between young and older adults through drama and storytelling activities occurred. The creative reciprocal initiatives of reminiscence arts in turn fostered a context for social and emotional engagement that appeared to reduce older adults’ isolation. / Graduate

Reminiscence Computer Therapy for People with Dementia / Vývoj asistenční aplikace pro lidi s demencí

Černý, Martin January 2016 (has links)
The aim of this diploma thesis is to implement a presentation layer for the Reminiscence Computer Therapy application. Reminiscence Therapy involves the discussion of the past memories and it is believed to help people with dementia to improve their well-being and sustain their memories. Computer Reminiscence Therapy involves technology in this therapy. The research introduces into Dementia and Reminiscence Therapy with and without using technologies. The application developed as part of this diploma thesis uses picture upload and speech recognition techniques for the memory input. This is used to support remembering of past memories and to increase discussion. The application can be used with or without the carer as well as with friends and family members. The six most important requirements on the developed application are the speech recognition, picture upload, asking questions about the previous recordings, asking questions about tagged friends, using old stories for discussion and presenting the statistics. The application was developed as a part of the competition made by AngelHack organization. Presentation, business and persistence layers of the application are discussed in this diploma thesis as well as user manual and persistence layer implementation of the requirements. The presentation layer was developed using React framework for JavaScript. Other libraries have to be used as well with the most important being Redux library for storing application state. This library affected the structure of the persistence layer.

Cidade, pintura: reminiscências / Cidade, pintura: reminiscências

Monteiro, Taís Cabral 03 November 2009 (has links)
This research deals with issues of pictorial language, such as color, form, planes of representation, transparency and opacity, space and material surface, and relates those with the individual and the city through reminiscence of everyday displacements in the city of Sao Paulo. Such issues arose from a theoretical research and by artistic practice, with the use of painting, lithography, and installation procedures where materials such as oil paints, paviflex and decorflex flexible pavement tiles, MDF2 plates, screens, adhesive tape and paper, among others, were employed. The result is the production and presentation of a set of works, and the development of this text that explains the theoretical and practical processes applied during the research. It is accompanied by photographs of part of the works referred to in this dissertation.

Memory, identity and well-being : preserving selfhood in dementia

Bevins, Adam January 2008 (has links)
People with dementia face considerable challenges to preserving identity. It has frequently been observed that group reminiscence work helps sufferers re-establish their past identities as well as position themselves as members of a group in the present. To date, little research has attempted to put these claims directly to empirical test. Drawing on social identity theory (Tajfel & Turner, 1979) this study explores the impact of a group reminiscence intervention in a sample of 58 cognitively impaired older adults living in residential care. Measures of identity, well-being and cognition were taken before and after participants took part in six weekly sessions of either group reminiscence or a group control activity. A Pretest-Posttest Control design was employed to explore the difference in average change between treatment conditions. The main findings showed no difference in average change between the two groups on measures of identity and well-being. However, the reminiscence group showed a greater overall improvement in memory than the control group. The theoretical implications and future directions for working clinically with cognitively impaired populations are considered.

Quête du passé, quête du sens : Gwenaëlle Aubry ("Personne"), Michel Del Castillo ("De père français", "Rue des Archives"), Pierre Bergounioux ("La Toussaint"), Pierre Michon ("Vies minuscules") / Quest of the past, search for meaning : Gwenaëlle Aubry ("Personne"), Michel Del Castillo ("De père français", "Rue des Archives"), Pierre Bergounioux ("La Toussaint"), Pierre Michon ("Vies minuscules")

Abroug, Sana 23 May 2016 (has links)
Thrown into a world that seems without order or coherence, in the story parentage fate of the narrator seems tragically insignificant. Prevented between words and words kill, past struggles to rebuild and life becomes a painful ordeal in the grip of an indecipherable and legacy to wear. The stories of Gwenaëlle Aubry, Michel Del Castillo, Pierre Bergounioux and Pierre Michon raise the same existential question about the heritage and freedom. From these experiences, we do not note that because of the similarities in its limits and in its aspiration to freedom, man can qualify differently. The analysis we have conducted various forms of reminiscences and different resources mobilized for the search for meaning shows that the definition of man depends not only on accidents of individual or collective history. It depends on the force of reason and freedom. We have proposed an analysis that presents a different approach to what is commonly done for parentage stories, an analysis that is released from the limited reading that takes into account family determinism, sociological, political and historical. Our work raises awareness of testimony both reasoned and passionate about what parentage story. Beyond their differences, the personal stories we studied are joined in the struggle that replaces the first anguish optimism that justifies the being and action.
