An analysis of verbal affixes in Kikongo with special reference to form and functionFernando, Mbiavanga 30 September 2008 (has links)
The relation between verbal affixes and their effect on the predicate argument structure of
the verbs that host them has been the focus of many studies in linguistics, with special
reference to Bantu languages in recent years. Given the colonial policy on indigenous
languages in Angola, Kikongo, as is the case of other Bantu languages in that country, has
not been sufficiently studied. This study explores the form and function of six verbal
affixes, including the order in which they occur in the verb stem. The study maintains that
the applicative and causative are valency-increasing verbal affixes and, as such, give rise
to double object constructions in Kikongo. The passive, reciprocal, reflexive and stative
are valency-decreasing and, as such, they reduce the valency of the verb by one object.
This study also suggests that Kikongo is a symmetrical object language in which both
objects appear to have equal status. / African languages / M.A.

The Prostitution Narrative: Revolutionaries, Feminists, and Prostitutes in Early American LiteratureHamper, Margaret Bertucci 01 May 2010 (has links)
This work is a study of the prostitute in early antebellum America as she exists in the literary world. I argue that the prostitute is a metaphor operating on two levels: she is symbolic both of a failed democratic state and the feminist as imagined by a hysteric patriarchy. Looking especially at Charles Brockden Brown's Ormond and Arthur Mervyn, Susanna Rowson's Charlotte Temple, and a variety of newspaper and journal articles, I explore the ways in which the prostitute embodied the belief that female independence was unnatural and could only result in the widespread vice of the very component of society whose political duty it was to raise virtuous male citizens and the fear that the fate of the French Revolution could reproduce itself in America.

Tři komparativní eseje na téma genderové příjmové nerovnosti v České republice / Three Comparative Essays on Gender Earnings Inequality in the Czech RepublicMysíková, Martina January 2012 (has links)
This thesis adopts three stepwise perspectives to look at earnings inequality. It applies Czech data from two surveys, Microcensus and Living Conditions, covering the period 1988-2008, and European dataset EU-SILC 2008 and 2009 for international comparisons. The first essay "Personal Earnings Inequality" analyzes personal earnings distribution in the Czech Republic since the early transition from communism, using relative distribution method. The trend of "hollowing of the middle" was confirmed in the early transition, but this phenomenon later subsided. Earnings polarization was apparent for all sex and education subgroups between 1988 and 1996. In international comparison, earnings of men and highly educated are more homogenous than earnings of their counterparts in most analyzed countries. The second essay "Gender Wage Gap" quantifies the structure of gender wage gaps in four Central-East European countries (CEE), using the Heckman regression model and Oaxaca- Blinder decomposition. The observed gender wage gap is substantially higher in the Czech Republic and Slovakia than in Hungary and Poland. A relatively small but positive part of the observed gender wage gap can be explained by gender differences in characteristics in the Czech Republic and Slovakia, with a high contribution of job...

We pretend in our study to propose a link between art and the ancient thinking through Plato’s considerations about mimesis, which are described on the Books II and III of the Republic dialogue. We will approach the principle of the platonic paideutic proposal highlighting its esthetic features, based on the sensible dimension of the Polis. We will analyze the importance given to the myths, as privileged images of the formation, and the position of mimesis on this process, which aims ultimately the love to the beauty.

Demarcating the cité française : exclusion and inclusion in colonial Algeria, 1870-1938Ofrath, Avner January 2017 (has links)
This thesis discusses the unmaking of republican citizenship in colonial Algeria and the reverberations of this process in the metropole under the Third Republic, as well as demands and contestations by various populations in the colony concerning participation and rights. The attempt to establish a regime of privileges for settlers and to exclude the Muslim majority led politicians, jurists, and administrators to rely on religion and ethnicity as legal criteria to demarcate the boundaries of French citizenship. In their quest to legitimise the political exclusion of the Muslim population, politicians and legal experts from the late nineteenth century onwards portrayed Islam as an immobile and unmodern religion. Reiterated in mainland France whenever the demand for political reform in Algeria was raised, such theories gave rise to the widely-held view that being Muslim was inherently irreconcilable with being French. At the same time, the thesis examines colonial reform movements and moments of asymmetrical negotiation between populations in Algeria and the state on the demarcation of French citizenry. Both the naturalisation of the Algerian Jews and the backlash against it are re-interpreted here to highlight the pivotal role played by the local and the settler populations. In a similar vein, the thesis discusses debates sparked in the early twentieth century by Algerian Muslim campaigns for political rights, debates which yielded alternative visions of participation in the Republic. The failure of such attempts to accommodate religious difference on the eve of collapse of the Third Republic re-affirmed the colonial order in Algeria and the deep imprint it had left on conceptions of French citizenship.
