The Influence of Agroforestry on Soil Fertility in Coffee Cultivations : A Review and a Field Study on Smallholding Coffee Farms in Colombia

Coffee is, together with cacao, the crop most commonly cultivated under shade trees in order to cope with physiological stress (as drought and sun radiation) and erosion as well as to generate additional income for the farmer. However, today this agroforestry coffee management is increasingly transformed into industrial plantation with little or no shade using varieties that tolerates full sun and can be planted with higher density. This conversion most often brings an intensified use of external input, such as fertilizers and pesticide, and a reduction in biodiversity as well as long term soil fertility. The objective of this study was to examine whether the inclusions of trees in coffee cultivations favour soil fertility and how it affects the output of the system. The aspect of output was not only delimited to the weight of coffee yield but take a broader perspective that comprises the farmer’s economy. This was done by conducting a review of previous research on the subject combined with a field study performed at six smallholding coffee farms with different levels of shade in Colombia from November to December 2014. The results of the field study serve as a site specific example and are discussed in relation to previous findings. Soil samples was taken at the farms and analysed for organic matter, soil moisture, respiration rate and acidity. The hypothesis was that the inclusion of trees in coffee cultivations can enhance the long term soil fertility when compared to monoculture systems. And also that agroforestry coffee can bring an increased safety for the farmer in terms of income, when compared to monoculture coffee. No general conclusions could be drawn based on the results from the field study; however the results show that a change from agroforestry management to monoculture management in coffee cultivations in Colombia can have a significant negative effect on soil respiration rate. Furthermore the study highlights the importance of taking into account the specific characteristics of the location and the management of the investigated farm when making conclusions about the effects of agroforestry on soil fertility. It is also concluded that long term studies, extending over at least a year, is necessary to fully see the effects of the cultivation practice on soil fertility.

Effect of partial root-zone drying, storage temperature and days to ripening on post-harvest quality of 'hass' avocado fruit

(Horticulture)) -- University of Limpopo, 2019 / The South African Avocado Industry is continuously expanding with ‘Hass’ cultivar occupying the largest land and therefore, the most exported cultivar. Expansion of the industry implies an increased demand for irrigation water. However, South Africa is a water scarce country characterised by low and erratic rainfall, where fruit production relies heavily on irrigation. The agricultural sector is under an obligation to reduce water use due to the increasing demand for water by other economic sectors. Therefore, it must find efficient water use techniques to save water and ensure water availability for other economic sectors. Partial root-zone drying (PRD) is an irrigation technique which may lead to 50% reduction in water use, half of the root system is kept wet while the other half is left dry to a predetermined level of soil water depletion, the dry and the moist sides are alternated at regular intervals. During storage and transportation of fresh produce, low temperature is a post-harvest tool used to maintain quality, especially when fruit are destined for long distant export markets. This study investigated the effect of PRD and low temperature storage on post-harvest quality parameters of ‘Hass’ avocado fruit. The experiment was laid as a factorial arranged in randomised complete block design (RCBD). The treatment factors for chilling injury, electrolyte leakage and vascular browning were 2 x irrigation regimes (Full Irrigation (FI) vs. PRD) and 2 x storage temperatures (2.0 and 5.5°C). However, treatment factors for fruit weight loss, respiration rate, fruit firmness, ripening percentage and fruit skin colour were 2 x irrigation regimes (Full Irrigation (FI) vs. PRD), 2 x storage temperatures (2.0 and 5.5°C) and 4 ripening days (0, 2, 4 and 6 days). Mature ‘Hass’ avocado fruit were harvested from PRD and fully irrigated trees and thereafter fruit of each treatment were stored at 2.0 and 5.5°C for 28 days. Each treatment consisted of 6 replicates, with an exception of electrolyte leakage, whereby the experiment was replicated 4 times. After 28 days’ storage at 2.0 and 5.5°C, fruit were ripened at 21°C. The effect of PRD and low temperature storage was determined by evaluating the following physico-chemical fruit parameters during ripening: external chilling injury, electrolyte leakage, fruit weight loss, respiration rate, firmness, fruit skin colour and vascular browning. During ripening, ‘Hass’ avocado fruit stored at 2.0°C showed significantly higher incidences of external chilling injury symptoms compared with xiii 5.5°C, irrespective of irrigation treatment. Furthermore, an interaction between irrigation treatment and low storage temperature had a significant (P<0.05) effect on cell membrane electrolyte leakage. All evaluated fruit showed similar weight loss, irrespective of irrigation and storage treatment. Irrigation, storage temperature and ripening days did not have effect on respiration during ripening. Fruit reached the respiratory climacteric peak on the same day (day 2). Furthermore, there was no significant interaction effect (P˃0.05) on fruit firmness. However, PRD treated fruit showed slightly low firmness when compared with control fruit. ‘Hass’ avocado fruit harvested from PRD and fully irrigated trees and stored at 5.5°C ripened quicker compared to fruit stored at 2.0°C. There was no significant interaction effect (P˃0.05) on fruit skin lightness (L), chroma (C), hue angle (h°) and fruit eye colour due to irrigation and cold storage treatment. In general, fruit showed skin colour change from emerald green to approximately 75% coloured. Furthermore, irrigation and storage temperature did not have effect on vascular browning, however, there incidence was high on fruit stored at 2.0°C when compared with 5.5°C. The results of this study indicated that ‘Hass’ avocado fruit stored at 2.0°C was negatively affected by low temperature storage and this cold storage temperature is not recommended. Este estudo teve como objetivo avaliar e quantificar o efeito do sombreamento artificial proporcionado por diferentes tipos de materiais de cobertura sobre a fisiologia, o comportamento e o desenvolvimento de novilhas leiteiras, em ambiente de pastagens. A pesquisa foi realizada no período de 08/01/2007 à 30/04/2007. A área experimental foi dividida em 16 parcelas adjacentes e iguais com 84 m² cada. Foram comparados a testemunha (sem sombra) com três tipos de cobertura: telhas de fibrocimento sem cimento amianto, telhas galvanizadas e tela de polipropileno 80% As dimensões dos abrigos foram 2m x 4m e 4m de altura (4m² de sombra.animal-1), sem paredes laterais. Foram utilizadas 16 novilhas Holandesas e 16 Hol x Jersey com idade e peso iniciais de 17,2 ± 5,6 meses e 265,3 ± 66,9kg, respectivamente, pareadas em função da uniformidade de peso e idade. As novilhas permaneciam em piquetes de capim elefante (Penissetum purpureum) durante a noite e após as 9:00h eram conduzidas para as parcelas. A tgn foi registrada por minidatalogger conectado a globo negro para cálculo de CTR e ITGU em cada parcela. As variáveis meteorológicas foram obtidas no posto agrometeorológico da ESALQ/USP. Semanalmente foram registradas FR, TR e TP. As observações comportamentais foram realizadas em dias não consecutivos por 24 horas pelo método focal. As pesagens dos animais foram realizadas mensalmente. As condições ambientais durante o período da pesquisa foram caracterizadas como estressantes para novilhas. A análise física dos materiais (tgn, CTR e ITGU) indicou diferença entre os materiais de cobertura (P<0,05) sendo a telhas de fibrocimento sem amianto a mais confortável termicamente, seguida da telha galvanizada e da tela. Os valores de FR foram menores sob as telhas de fibrocimento (P<0,05) e semelhantes entre telha galvanizada e tela (P>0,05), os valores de TR não apresentaram diferença entre tratamentos somente entre horários e para a TP houve diferença (P<0,05) entre o tratamento fibrocimento e a testemunha, porém não houve entre os demais (P>0,05). A FR apresentou as respostas mais imediatas às alterações ambientais. Houve correlação da TR com a FR e a TP. Não foram observadas alterações comportamentais entre os tratamentos, os animais ficaram sob as sombras nas horas mais quentes do dia, preferencialmente em pé, o comportamento diário seguiu os padrões conhecidos para bovinos. O ganho de peso não foi alterado pelos tratamentos. A análise de custo indicou a cobertura de fibrocimento como a mais indicada para a construção de abrigos considerando-se os resultados encontrados. A pesquisa indicou haver melhora no bem estar térmico das novilhas, porém, não conseguiu determinar ganhos efetivos na utilização da sombra. / The objective of the present study was to evaluate and quantify the effect of artificial shade given by different types of roofing materials on the physiology, behavior and development of dairy heifers in a pasture environment. The present study took place from January 8, 2007 to April 30, 2007. The experimental area was divided into 16 equal, adjacent plots with 84 m2. Three roofing treatments (fiber-cement roofing tiles without amianthus, galvanized roofing tiles and 80% polypropylene screen) were compared to a control (no shade). Shelter structures had no lateral walls and measured 2m x 4m x 4m height (4m² shaded per animal). Animals consisted of 16 Holstein heifers and 16 Holstein x Jersey heifers with initial age and weight being 17.2 ± 5.6 months and 265.3 ± 66.9 kg, respectively. Animals were equally distributed among the treatments according to weight and age. At night, heifers were kept in fields with Pennisetum purpureum, also known as elephant grass. After 9:00 am, animals were taken to the experimental plots. Black globe thermometer temperature (tbg) was measured using a mini-datalogger connected to a black globe. Values were then used to calculate Radiant Thermic Load (RTL) and Black Globe Humidity Index (BGHI) of each plot. Meteorological variables were obtained from the agricultural-meteorological post at the ESALQ/USP. Respiration rate (RR), rectal temperature (RT) and skin temperature (ST) were registered weekly. Behavioral observations were recorded every other day using the focal method. Animals were weighed monthly. Environmental conditions during the research period were characterized as stressful for the heifers. Physical analysis of the material (tbg, RTL and BGHI) indicated the roofing treatments to be significantly different (P<0.05), with the fiber-cement roofing tiles without amianthus to be the most comfortable regarding temperature, followed by the galvanized roofing tiles and the 80% polypropylene screens. Respiration rate was lower under the fiber-cement roofing tiles (P<0.05) and similar under the galvanized tiles and polypropylene screen (P>0.05). RR values were lower under the fiber-cement tiles (P<0.05) and similar under the galvanized roofing tiles and polypropylene screen (P>0.05). There were no significant differences in RT values among treatments; however, a difference was found among data collection times. Concerning ST, fiber-cement tiles were significantly different from the control (P<0.05). On the other hand, there were no significant differences regarding ST among the other treatments (P>0.05). RR presented the most immediate response to environmental alterations. RT presented correlation with RR and ST. No behavioral alterations were observed among the treatments. Daily behavior followed known bovine patterns. Weight gain was not altered by the treatments. A cost analysis indicated fibercement roofing tiles to be better for shelter construction. The present study also indicated improved heifer thermal well-being; however, no effective gains could be determined from shade use.

Despite its recognized functional properties, it has a limited market due to its high perishability. The present study aimed to evaluate the physicochemical characterization of jabuticaba fruits variety Pingo de mel during its physiological development, and the effect of different calcium chloride concentrations on the post-harvest conservation of jabuticaba at different storage temperatures. To evaluate the physiological development, the fruits were collected ten days after the anthesis (DAA) until complete maturation, with intervals of four days between the collections. The period between anthesis and maturation was 34 days. For the post-harvest analysis, the fruits were collected 30 days after the anthesis and immersed into calcium chloride solution at different concentrations (0%, 2%, 4%, and 6%) for 30 minutes at room temperature. Then, the fruits were dried and packed in polypropylene bags and stored at different temperatures (6°C, 12°C, and 25°C). Samples were analyzed at time 0 and every two days, up to 12 days of storage. In the physiological development, the mean diameter, mass, soluble solids, and anthocyanins content increased up to 30 DAA, while the soluble pectin increased up to 34 DAA. A reduction in respiratory rate was observed up to 30 DAA, as well as the firmness and total chlorophyll indices up to 34 DAA, and pH up to 18 DAA, which increased up to 34 DAA. In contrast, an opposite behavior was observed for acidity values. Higher levels of phenolic compounds, hydrolyzed tannins, and antioxidant activity were observed at 10 DAA, while the vitamin C content was higher throughout the maturation stage. An increase in moisture, protein, and lipids was observed up to 18 DAA, with reduction until maturation, with opposite behavior for ash and carbohydrates levels. In general, minerals decreased throughout the development stage. In relation to the carbohydrate profile, higher fructose contents were observed with an increase during maturation. In the post-harvest evaluation, the different calcium chloride concentrations had no effect on the maintenance of fruit characteristics over time, at different storage temperatures. Throughout the storage, there was an increase in pectin, antioxidant activity, CO2, total sugars, acidity, and mass loss. Higher storage temperatures affected both the increase in mass loss, pH, and O2 production, and the reduction of vitamin C content Therefore, to obtain better quality fruits concerning the degree of maturation, it is of great importance to harvest jabuticaba between 30 and 34 DAA. Refrigeration was important for the post-harvest conservation of the jabuticaba fruits variety Pingo de mel, once the fruits stored at 6 ° C suffered minor variations, with improvements or little changes during the 12 days. / A jabuticaba é um fruto conhecido e apreciado em praticamente todo o mundo, além disso, possui alegadas propriedades funcionais. No entanto o fruto apresenta comércio limitado, devido a sua alta perecibilidade. Objetivou-se com o presente trabalho caracterizar física e quimicamente os frutos de jabuticaba variedade ‘Pingo de mel’ ao longo do seu desenvolvimento fisiológico, bem como analisar a influencia da aplicação de diferentes concentrações de cloreto de cálcio, associado a diferentes temperaturas de armazenamento na conservação pós-colheita de jabuticaba. Para a caracterização do desenvolvimento fisiológico, os frutos foram coletados aos dez dias após a antese (DAA) e prorrogou-se até o completo amadurecimento, com intervalos de quatro dias entre as coletas. O período compreendido entre a antese e o amadurecimento foi de 34 dias. Para a análise pós-colheita os frutos foram coletados aos trinta dias após a antese e submetidos à imersão em solução de cloreto de cálcio, com diferentes concentrações (0%, 2%, 4% e 6%), durante 30 minutos, à temperatura ambiente. Posteriormente, foram secas e embaladas em potes de polipropileno e armazenadas em diferentes temperaturas (6°C, 12°C e 25°C). As amostras foram analisadas no tempo 0 e a cada dois dias, até os 12 dias de armazenamento. No desenvolvimento fisiológico observou-se que os valores de diâmetros, massa e sólidos solúveis e antocianinas, aumentaram até os 30 DAA, enquanto que os teores de pectina solúvel elevaram-se até os 34 DAA. A taxa respiratória apresentou resultado oposto com redução até os 30 DAA, os teores de firmeza e clorofila total apresentaram redução até os 34 DAA, o pH reduziu até os 18 DAA, com posterior elevação até os 34 DAA, enquanto que a acidez apresentou comportamento contrário. Níveis elevados de compostos fenólicos, taninos hidrolisados e atividade antioxidante foram observados aos 10 DAA, enquanto o conteúdo de vitamina C foi maior ao longo do amadurecimento. Observou-se aumento na umidade, proteína e lipídios até 18 DAA, com redução até a maturação, e notou-se comportamento oposto para os níveis de cinzas e carboidratos. Em geral, os minerais diminuíram ao longo do desenvolvimento. Em relação ao perfil de carboidratos, a frutose apresentou maior concentração, com aumento durante a maturação. Na análise pós-colheita as diferentes concentrações de cloreto de cálcio não apresentaram efeito na conservação das características dos frutos nas diferentes temperaturas de armazenamento e nem mesmo ao longo do tempo. No decorrer dos dias de armazenamento houve aumento dos teores de pectinas, da atividade antioxidante, do CO2, dos açúcares totais, da acidez e da perda de massa. Maiores temperaturas influenciaram no aumento da perda de massa, do pH e da produção de O2 e redução da vitamina C. Portanto para se obter frutos de melhor qualidade em relação ao grau de maturação é de grande importância realizar a colheita entre 30 e 34 DAA. Na pós-colheita a refrigeração foi importante para a conservação pós-colheita dos frutos de jabuticaba variedade ‘Pingo de mel’, visto que as frutas submetidas à temperatura de 6°C de armazenamento sofreram menores variações e/ou mantiveram condições semelhantes ou melhores nos frutos durante os 12 dias.

The relationship between respiration rate and storage life of fresh produce

This project examines whether there is a direct link between respiration and the rate of senescence of fresh produce. Treatments that increase the storage life of fresh products, such as cooling, modified atmospheres and semi-permeable coatings, often decrease respiration rates. This suggests that it may be possible to assess the effectiveness of a specific storage treatment in terms of its effect on reducing respiration. If this is so, total respiration during storage should sum to a constant regardless of changes in the storage conditions. Such an equivalence between 'respiration life' and storage life has been demonstrated in only a few cases. Respiration data from a wide range of published work was analysed from the viewpoint of testing this hypothesis. In general, the results were positive, with some reservations that were further investigated by experiment. In conclusion, respiration rate may be a guide to storage life for products that have clearly defined stages of senescence, and for which rots are not the primary cause of the end of acceptability. The development of the respirometer should make it possible to examine this relationship for many other commodities. However, while respiration may be a function of the rate of senescence under some circumstances, it is also affected by other factors. These include photosynthesis, attachment to the plant, and permeance to gases. Directions for future work therefore include the contribution of photosynthesis to fruit development, the effects of ethylene on respiration rates of non-climacteric fruit while attached to the plant, and interactions between ethylene synthesis and disease resistance / Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)

An Implementation And Algorithm Development For Uwb Through The Wall Imaging System

The feasibility of Ultra Wide Band (UWB) through the wall surveillance system is studied in this thesis. The transmitter and receiver architectures are discussed and an experimental set-up is constructed to verify the theory of UWB sensing. The constructed system has 80 mW peak, 6 uW average transmit power and 500 kHz PRF and a range resolution better than 1 cm. Using the experimental set-up, two problems are examined. The first problem is the respiration rate detection problem. It has been shown that the respiration rate can be accurately estimated and the signs of vital activity can be determined behind the wall. The second problem studied in this thesis is the through the wall imaging problem. The imaging system is based on the construction of a synthetic aperture by sliding the transmit-receive antenna pair along the cross range direction. The cross range resolution is improved by applying a migration algorithm to the collected data. It has been shown that imaging of a scene 8 meters in range, behind a wall of 20 cm thickness is possible with the available power.

Shelter structures had no lateral walls and measured 2m x 4m x 4m height (4m² shaded per animal). Animals consisted of 16 Holstein heifers and 16 Holstein x Jersey heifers with initial age and weight being 17.2 ± 5.6 months and 265.3 ± 66.9 kg, respectively. Animals were equally distributed among the treatments according to weight and age. At night, heifers were kept in fields with Pennisetum purpureum, also known as elephant grass. After 9:00 am, animals were taken to the experimental plots. Black globe thermometer temperature (tbg) was measured using a mini-datalogger connected to a black globe. Values were then used to calculate Radiant Thermic Load (RTL) and Black Globe Humidity Index (BGHI) of each plot. Meteorological variables were obtained from the agricultural-meteorological post at the ESALQ/USP. Respiration rate (RR), rectal temperature (RT) and skin temperature (ST) were registered weekly. Behavioral observations were recorded every other day using the focal method. Animals were weighed monthly. Environmental conditions during the research period were characterized as stressful for the heifers. Physical analysis of the material (tbg, RTL and BGHI) indicated the roofing treatments to be significantly different (P<0.05), with the fiber-cement roofing tiles without amianthus to be the most comfortable regarding temperature, followed by the galvanized roofing tiles and the 80% polypropylene screens. Respiration rate was lower under the fiber-cement roofing tiles (P<0.05) and similar under the galvanized tiles and polypropylene screen (P>0.05). RR values were lower under the fiber-cement tiles (P<0.05) and similar under the galvanized roofing tiles and polypropylene screen (P>0.05). There were no significant differences in RT values among treatments; however, a difference was found among data collection times. Concerning ST, fiber-cement tiles were significantly different from the control (P<0.05). On the other hand, there were no significant differences regarding ST among the other treatments (P>0.05). RR presented the most immediate response to environmental alterations. RT presented correlation with RR and ST. No behavioral alterations were observed among the treatments. Daily behavior followed known bovine patterns. Weight gain was not altered by the treatments. A cost analysis indicated fibercement roofing tiles to be better for shelter construction. The present study also indicated improved heifer thermal well-being; however, no effective gains could be determined from shade use.

"Non-invasive remote physiological monitoring of soldiers on the battlefield has the potential to provide fast, accurate status assessments that are key to improving the survivability of critical injuries. The development of WPI’s wearable wireless pulse oximeter, designed for field-based applications, has allowed for the optimization of important hardware features such as physical size and power management. However, software-based digital signal processing (DSP) methods are still required to perform physiological assessments. This research evaluated DSP methods that were capable of providing arterial oxygen saturation (SpO2), heart rate (HR), heart rate variability (HRV), and respiration rate (RR) measurements derived from data acquired using a single optical sensor. In vivo experiments were conducted to evaluate the accuracies of the processing methods across ranges of physiological conditions. Of the algorithms assessed, 13 SpO2 methods, 1 HR method, 6 HRV indices, and 4 RR methods were identified that provided clinically acceptable measurement accuracies and could potentially be employed in a wearable pulse oximeter."

Effect of harvest time, post-harvest storage and ripening temperature on fruit quality of reed avocado cultivar

The cultivar has shown good adaptation and produces quality fruit with export potential. Its pre-harvest adaptation and production aspects have been researched and documented. However, the effect of harvest time, post-harvest storage and ripening temperature has not been comprehensively studied on this newly introduced ‘Reed’ avocado cultivar. Therefore, the aim of this work was to investigate the effect of different harvest time, post-harvest storage and ripening temperature on the quality of late season ‘Reed’ avocado fruit. Matured ‘Reed’ avocado fruit were harvested based on moisture content indexing in December (2015) and January (2016). The experiment was carried out in a factorial, arranged in a completely randomised design (CRD) with three replicates. Treatment factors were: 2 x harvest time (mid-and late), 2 x post-harvest storage (2.0 and 5.5°C), 3 x ripening temperature (16, 21 and 25°C) and 5 x ripening day (0, 2, 4, 6 and 8). Fruit were stored at 2.0 and 5.5°C for 28 days, thereafter, ripened at 16, 21 and 25°C until fully ripe. During ripening, fruit were evaluated for weight loss, skin colour, firmness, respiration rate, physiological and pathological disorders. Mid-harvest fruit had higher moisture content when compared with late harvest fruit. However, harvest time, post-harvest storage, ripening temperature and ripening time (days) significantly influenced fruit weight loss, firmness, respiration rate, ripening percentage of ‘Reed’ avocado fruit during ripening. Moreover, fruit firmness decreased faster at higher temperatures (25 and 21°C) with fruit ripening within 4 and 6 days, respectively. In addition, ripening at a lower temperature (16°C) was slower with fruit fully ripened within 8 days after withdrawal from cold storage at both harvest times. ‘Reed’ avocado fruit respiration rate followed a climacteric pattern, however, significantly higher rate at higher temperature (25°C) when compared with lower temperature (16°C) after withdrawal from cold storage during both harvest times. Interestingly, mid-harvest fruit showed high electrolyte damage after withdrawal from 2.0°C when compared with late harvest fruit at the same temperature. Furthermore, mid-harvest fruit stored at 2.0ºC and ripened at 21°C showed higher chilling injury when compared with fruit ripened at 16 and 25°C. High electrolyte leakage positively correlated (R2 = 0.242) with high chilling damage for xiv mid-harvest fruit stored 5.5°C. Treatment factors had a significant effect (P < 0.05) on lightness (L *) and hue angle (h ) but no significant effect (P > 0.05) on chroma (C *) and eye colour of ‘Reed’ avocado fruit during ripening, irrespective of harvest time. Overall results showed a visual change in ‘Reed’ avocado skin colour, with eye colour changing from green to bright yellow. Furthermore, late harvest fruit showed high post-harvest pathological diseases after removal from high temperature (5.5°C) when compared with mid-harvest fruit stored at low storage temperature (2.0°C). Ripening at a higher temperature (21 and 25°C) resulted in higher incidence of stem-end rot and body rot when compared with lower temperature (16°C) for both harvest times. Late harvest fruit showed a higher incidence of vascular browning at higher ripening temperatures (21 and 25°C) when compared with lower temperature (16°C) after withdrawal from cold storage. Moreover, overall results showed that harvest time, post-harvest storage and the ripening temperature had a profound influence on the quality of ‘Reed’ avocado fruit. In conclusion, ‘Reed’ avocado fruit can be harvested during mid- or late season and stored at recommended low temperature (2.0ºC); and thereafter, ripened at either 16 or 21ºC. In addition, future studies should focus on identifying pre-harvest practices that promote higher post-harvest fruit quality for ‘Reed’ avocado fruit under South African production environment.
