Variation in the Flexibility of Potential Anti-Predator Behaviours among Larval Damselflies

Heterogeneous environments play an important role in the evolution of traits when selection is diversifying between different conditions. One response is the capacity of individuals to beneficially adjust their phenotype to local conditions, such as different predators. In larval Enallagma damselflies, diversifying selection from predatory dragonfly larvae or predatory fish favours opposing traits, respectively high or low levels of activity, and so appears to drive the adaptive divergence of anti-predator specialists. However, little work has addressed: i) if anti-predator generalist species exist; ii) if anti-predator generalist species express adaptive flexible behaviour; iii) if adaptive flexible behaviour is influenced by prior experience with predators. I compared individual larval behaviour in the presence of fish, dragonfly larvae, or no predators, in four Enallagma species groups from ponds with and without fish predators. Ecological distributions suggest variation in degree of anti-predator generalization, and this was associated with increased responsiveness to predator treatment in the most likely ecological generalist. Responses to predators varied across different behaviours and sometimes were shaped by prior predation experience. Thus, a variety of adaptive strategies may have evolved to cope with heterogeneity in predation risk in larval damselflies. / NSERC, OGS

Deep and Superficial Pelvic Floor Muscle Responses to a Pain Stimulus in Vestibulodynia

Previous studies have suggested that protective responses in the pelvic floor muscles (PFMs), described in terms of hypertonicity and over-reactivity, are associated with and may worsen the symptoms of provoked vestibulodynia (PVD, i.e., chronic vulvar pain). A recent study reported that, upon manual palpation of the PFM, hypertonicity was consistently found in the superficial but not the deep PFM layers. The goals of this study were to compare superficial and deep PFM resting tone, protective response magnitude and onset timing to moderate perceived vulvar pain between women with and without PVD. Eleven women with PVD and eleven control women Tcompleted a gynecological examination and standardized PFM electromyography (EMG) testing. Three trials of sTurface EMG activity of the PFM were recorded while a pressure-pain stimulus (PPS) was applied to the vulvar vestibule. Increasing pressure was applied to achieve a perceived pain intensity rating of 6/10 using an 11-point numerical rating scale presented visually. The women with PVD had higher resting EMG activity in their superficial PFMs (p=0.04) as compared to the control group, while no difference was found at the level of the deep PFMs (p=0.12). Participants in both groups demonstrated contractile responses to the PPS in both the superficial and the deep PFM, and these responses were significantly higher (p=0.0001) in the superficial (50.06 vs 38.69 % maximal voluntary electrical activation [MVE]) as compared to the deep (24.88 vs 22.52 %MVE) PFM layers. Women with PVD had significantly higher PFM responses at the superficial layer as compared to the control women (p<0.0005). The onset of the superficial and deep EMG PFM responses followed the PPS application in both groups. No differences were found between the deep and superficial PFM onset latency to the timing of the PPS application.The results of this study suggest that women with PVD have superficial PFMs that are more responsive to vulvar pain than those in non-affected women. "Political changes and access policies in Malagasy Higher Education since independence (1960-2008)"

<p>The objective of this research was to investigate the relationships between the political change and the access policy changes in Madagascar since independence. In this study qualitative and quantitative data were used. The qualitative research consisted of eleven in-depth interviews and the collection of policy documents from 1960 to 2008. Open-ended questionnaires were utilized to collect data and to achieve the objectives of the research. Policy documents were analyzed to identify government policy changes. The main findings from the research showed that access policy changed with each major change in political leadership. Four major political periods and four respective main access policy changes were identified from 1960 to 2008. Higher education policy in general changed when there was a major change in presidential leadership. The main conclusions of this study were that access policy changes were the result of major changes in presidential leadership and that in spite of rhetoric to the contrary, universities did not have the autonomy to resist changes in access policy because of the top-down state system and the institutional financial dependence on the national government.</p>

An Evaluation of Electrocochleography as a Diagnostic Tool for Ménière’s Disease

Ménière’s disease (MD) is an idiopathic inner ear disorder, characterised by episodes of vertigo, tinnitus, sensorineural hearing loss, and aural fullness in the affected ear. The relatively high variability of symptomological changes renders it difficult to confirm the MD diagnosis. The purpose of this study is to compare the diagnostic power of an instrumental method, electrocochleography (ECochG), and two subjective methods, including the criteria based on the clinical guidelines provided by the American Academy of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery Committee on Hearing Equilibrium (AAO-HNS CHE) and Gibson’s Score. A quota sampling method was used to include subjects. A total of 250 potential MD patients who were referred to the Department of Otolaryngology at the Christchurch Hospital between year 1994 and 2009 have had their signs and symptoms documented and ECochG testing completed. A selection of details obtained from both AAO-HNS CHE and ECochG assessment results were examined as a chart review in regard to its function as a diagnostic tool for MD. The between-method reliability was found to be high, with a few disagreements on individual diagnosis. Based on a receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis, the ECochG measures were shown to be pertinent to the diagnosis of MD. It was also found that patients tested “positive”, as compared with those tested “negative”, tended to show higher correlations among the four key symptoms of MD and among the ECochG measures derived from the auditory evoked responses to tone bursts at frequencies in close proximity to each other.

Moisture content in radiata pine wood: Implications for wood quality and water-stress response

This thesis studied the influence of moisture content on the dynamic estimation of stiffness in wood of Pinus radiata D. Don. This is an important non-destructive measure for estimation of stiffness in standing trees, logs and lumber. Moisture content affects both acoustic velocity and density in the fundamental equation of dynamic MOE (DMOE = V²ρ, where V = acoustic velocity and ρ = density). Investigation included measurements with boards in the laboratory considering moisture contents below and above FSP as well as temperatures below and above 0°C. This also included field measurements of trees in contrasting climate sites and over different seasons including a long drought. Methods for measuring green density and moisture content and the patterns of variation of these parameters were also investigated. A secondary component of this thesis explored the wood quality and some mechanisms of tree response to water stress in two contrasting sites in terms or rainfall and water deficits in a region of Australia. The large increases in DMOE for frozen wood above the FSP (4.5 to 6 GPa) will limit the use of DMOE for grading logs in regions with freezing winters. Results from the experiment remeasuring young trees and the upper range of moisture content and temperatures above 0°C from the experiment with boards showed small to moderate variation in DMOE (0.1 to 1 GPa) which calls for further investigation on analytical procedures for adjustment of DMOE. Such procedures should consider that variations in acoustic velocity and density with changes in moisture content are not proportional and that there are counteracting effects between the two parameters. It remains to be investigated whether the typical variation (under normal climate conditions) in sapwood green density observed in our experiments has some implications for the use of DMOE. On the other hand, it is anticipated that the large differences along the stem and among stands in whole-section green density may bias DMOE measurements in logs for resource assessment. This also needs to be investigated. A comparison between acoustic velocity alone and DMOE for resource assessment under different scenarios is recommended. The study in two contrasting climate sites (high-altitude vs. warm-dry) in the Hume region of Forests NSW, Australia, including young (10-11 years) and mature trees (34 36 years) of radiata pine showed distinctive short and long-term responses of trees to cope with the water-limiting environment. In response to long-term water deficits the warm-dry site developed heartwood and thus reduced sapwood earlier and at faster rates than the high-altitude site. The onset of heartwood formation seemed to be triggered by some site threshold for water use as broadly indicated by the sapwood area/ha. The latter was consistently lower for the warm-dry site across the different stands. The warm-dry site also showed increased short-term responses to water stress and these were interpreted as seasonal mechanisms of the trees to cope with the limiting environment. The trees compensated for the lower available moisture and higher transpiration rates by lowering their saturation and disrupting water conduction at some points (cavitation). The inverse trends of cavitation spots and cavitation bands with height in the stem suggested the trees have different strategies to sacrifice conducting xylem depending on the position on the stem. Finally, it is suggested that saturation tended to fall to critical 'safe' levels as a result of water stress and this varied depending on age, site, and position in the stem. Significant decreases in DMOE and basic density were observed for the warm-dry site and were attributed to lower proportions of latewood due to lower rainfall for that site during the period of latewood formation. These showed no obvious association with any of the long-term water-stress traits (sapwood percentage and number of heartwood rings).

Tree Ring Responses to Climate: Drought Stress Signals Decreased Resilience of Northern Boreal Forests

Unprecedented rates of climate change have increased forest stress and mortality worldwide. Previous research in the boreal forest has largely documented negative growth responses to climate in forest species and habitats characteristic of drier conditions, emphasizing the sensitivity of drier or warmer landscape positions to climate warming. Tree growth responses to recent climate warming may signal changes in the susceptibility of forest communities to compositional change and consequently impact a wide range of ecosystem processes and services. In this study, I explored relationships between climate and radial growth of black spruce, a dominant tree species typical of cool and moist habitats in the boreal forests of North America. I assessed how growth-climate responses varied with stand characteristics and landscape position across four different regions in Alaska and Yukon Territory and found widespread negative correlations between growth and temperature. Decreased tree growth in association with increasing temperatures is generally accepted as a signal of temperature induced drought stress. However, variations in tree growth alone do not reveal the physiological mechanisms behind recent changes in tree growth. Thus, I used stable carbon isotopes to test if the changes in growth were due to physiological drought stress. My results highlight the prominence of drought stress in the boreal forest, even for trees located in cool and moist landscape positions. As mature trees might be able to survive in stressful environmental conditions that do not permit successful post-fire recruitment and survival of seedling, drought stress could affect the resilience of the boreal forest ecosystem to disturbance from fire. I assessed drought stress in pre-fire trees and used post-fire forest compositional changes as a proxy for ecosystem resilience. My results suggest that forest stands with the lowest resilience to disturbance are those that experienced the compounding effects of climate induced drought stress and high fire severity. These sites were generally located at warmer and drier landscape positions, suggesting they are less resilient to disturbance than sites in cool and moist locations. I conclude that as temperatures continue to warm, the loss of boreal forest resilience to disturbance from fire will vary in association with environmental heterogeneity across the landscape.

Comparing autonomic and cardiovascular responses in African and Caucasian men : the SABPA study / Aletta Sophia Uys.

Motivation Hypertension is a pertinent health problem for urban black African men (hereafter referred to as African). Sympathetic hyperactivity and a dominant α-adrenergic response pattern have both been implicated as contributing factors to their poor cardiovascular health. In addition to the deleterious effect of neurogenic hypertension on target organs, sympathetic hyperactivity may promote the accelerated progression of left ventricular hypertrophy and structural vascular disease. Aim The overarching aim of this study is to scrutinize autonomic control of the cardiovascular system in a cohort of urban African and Caucasian men during a mental challenge. Associations were investigated between potential sympatho-vagal imbalance, blood pressure and target organ damage markers to determine cardiovascular risk in ethnic male groups. Methodology The SABPA (Sympathetic activity and Ambulatory Blood Pressure in Africans) study involved the participation of 200 male teachers (99 African and 101 Caucasian) in the Kenneth Kaunda Education District of the North-West Province, South Africa. Of the participant group, HIV-infected (13 African) and clinically confirmed diabetics (1 Caucasian and 6 African men) were excluded from further analyses. Stratification was based on ethnicity and further as indicated through statistical interaction effects. Cardiovascular and autonomic responses were assessed during rest and on stressor exposure (cold pressor test and Stroop colour-word conflict test). Autonomic measures included baroreceptor sensitivity (BRS), 3-methoxy-4-hydroxy-phenylglycol (MHPG) and nitric oxide metabolite (NOx) levels. Cardiovascular variables consisted of blood pressure, cardiac output, stroke volume, total peripheral resistance, heart rate, arterial compliance and ST-segment from the 12-lead electrocardiogram. Markers of target organ damage included the Cornell product (indication of left ventricular hypertrophy) and carotid intima-media thickness as indication of structural vascular disease. Means and proportions were compared by means of standard t-test and Chi-square test, respectively. Significant differences of mean cardiovascular and autonomic measures between ethnic male groups were also determined through analysis of covariance. Uni- and multivariate regression analyses were employed to demonstrate associations between target organ damage, cardiovascular and autonomic markers. Results and conclusion of each manuscript To assess autonomic nervous system and cardiovascular function as well as target organ damage, we clearly focussed on responses where our participants were challenged. Markers of autonomic responses assessed were baroreceptor sensitivity, 3-methoxy-4-hydroxyphenylglycol and nitric oxide metabolites.  The first manuscript (Chapter 2) focused on left ventricular hypertrophy as marker of target organ damage, blood pressure and baroreceptor sensitivity as marker of autonomic function. The objective was to determine whether BRS was significantly lower in African men than in the Caucasian men. Furthermore, the possible association between attenuation of BRS and increased levels of ambulatory blood pressure as well as left ventricular hypertrophy was investigated in these population groups. Results revealed that the African men had significantly lower BRS stress responses. This attenuated BRS profile was coupled with dominant α-adrenergic response patterns, which was associated with an elevation of ambulatory blood pressure. BRS attenuation (rest and stress response) was not associated with left ventricular hypertrophy. It was concluded that lower BRS, especially during stress, may pose a significant health threat for urban African men regarding the development or promotion of α-adrenergic-driven hypertension and higher cardiovascular disease risk.  The aim of the second sub-study (Chapter 3) was to investigate possible associations between structural vascular disease (carotid intima-media thickness as marker), autonomic function (MHPG as marker) and nocturnal blood pressure in the African and Caucasian men. Results showed a higher prevalence of nocturnal hypertension in the African men, with night-time blood pressure significantly higher compared to the Caucasian men. In the African and Caucasian men, carotid intima-media thickness was linearly predicted by nocturnal systolic and diastolic blood pressure respectively. In conclusion, no associations were demonstrated between MHPG and carotid intimamedia thickness or between MHPG and nocturnal blood pressure. Elevated nocturnal blood pressure evidently seems to promote structural vascular disease in this cohort of urban African and Caucasian men.  The aim of the third manuscript presented in Chapter 4, was to investigate bioavailability of NO during mental challenge (autonomic function marker) and the possible association with structural vascular disease (carotid intima-media thickness as marker). In the African men, an attenuated NOx response was demonstrated to the Stroop colour-word conflict test. After stratification into high and low NOx response groups, in the African men with a low NOx response enhanced α-adrenergic with significant STsegment depression responses was demonstrated indicating reduced myocardial oxygen supply during mental stressor exposure. Only in the African men, a ST-segment depression was significantly associated with structural vascular disease. It was concluded that the African men demonstrated a vulnerable cardiovascular profile. In this cohort of African men, the significant association between structural vascular disease and myocardial ischemia may particularly indicate a possible higher risk for future cardiovascular events. General conclusion Through the assessment of autonomic and cardiovascular responses a possible higher cardiovascular risk was demonstrated in the African men. In this cohort sympathetic hyperactivity was evident, coupled with dominant vascular response patterns and reduced myocardial oxygen supply during mental stress exposure.
