Dedicated radio-communication system for Soekor's oil exploration along the South African coastline

Thesis (Masters Diploma( Technology)) --Cape Technikon, Cape Town, 1989 / Soekor's exploration programme has moved totally offshore and expanded greatly in the past few years. Use of computers necessitated the exchange of data between offshore and land installations. At the same time the exploration programme is moving further offshore While the coastal. stations of the Post & Telecommunications can not handle the volume of traffic that the oil drills present nor the data modes. A study of the transmission requirements revealed that a minimum of one voice channel per drill must be available at all times, While Some 20M byte of data per oil drill per year will be transmitted. Facsimile will be needed at times, also as a back-up for the data systems. A study of publications revealed that only five of the eleven methods studied where viable, namely VHF-EM, satellite, HF-telephony, HF-teleprinter and HF-data. These possibilities as well as their practical implementation were studied in depth. The effect of the atmospheric conditions on the propagation of VHF-signals around the coastline was studied and 17 sites identified and evaluated from the mouth of the Orange River to Port Elizabeth in respect of coverage, accessibility, facilities and cost. INMARSAT facilities and costs were evaluated as well as HF-systems. Finally a system was designed consisting of HF-telephony, separate "packet" HF radio data system, satellite telephony back-up and satellite high speed data as well as a limited VHF system. The entire system is complemented by marine telephony and telegraphy equipment. On-going system guidance in the form of propagation predictions is provided. Some existing equipment was used, While R950 000 has been spent to date on additional equipment.

Today Atlas Copco Rock Drills AB hasn’t got any method to determine how many warning alarms they need on their machines and how they should be mounted to use their full potential. At the moment a travel alarm is usually placed in the front of the machine and a reverse alarm in the back. Then a measurement of the sound pressure level around the machine is performed to see if it is enough to pass the limit according to different ISO-standards. Otherwise they have to mount some extra alarms and then do the measurements again until the standards are fulfilled. The aim of this thesis work is to develop a method for determine how many alarms Atlas Copco Rock Drills AB need on the machines, and also how they should be mounted to fulfil the different criteria according to ISO-standards in the early phase of construction. From the different divisions within Atlas Copco Rock Drills AB (LHD, SDE and TME) arrived four different alarms, which are used on their machines. Sound pressure level measurements were conducted on these, in the anechoic chamber at audiological research centre at the university hospital in Örebro. In the LMS Test.Lab software a measurement sphere was built around the horns and based on the data obtained at the anechoic chamber sound directivity plots were made. Together with earlier machine measurement data from Atlas Copco Rock Drills AB, an Excel program was made constituting an example of how the horns should be mounted. I nuläget monteras ett signalhorn vid främre delen och ett backlarm i bakre delen av maskinen. Sedan utförs en ljudtrycksmätning runt maskinen för att kontrollera om man uppfyller kraven från olika ISO-standader. Annars monteras fler alarm och mätningen utförs på nytt tills standarderna uppfylls. Detta examensarbete har som mål att ta fram en metod som bestämmer hur många alarm Atlas Copco Rock Drills AB behöver på sina maskiner, samt hur de skall placeras för att uppfylla kriterierna från olika ISO-standarder redan i konstruktionsstadiet.  Från de olika avdelningarna inom Atlas Copco Rock Drills AB (LHD, SDE och TME) mottogs fyra olika alarm, som används på maskinerna. På dessa utfördes ljudtrycksmätningar i det ekofria rummet vid audiologiskt forskningscentrum på universitetssjukhuset i Örebro. I programmet LMS Test.Lab byggdes en sfär av mätpunkter runt alarmen och baserat på insamlade data från det ekofria rummet konstruerades direktivitetsdiagram. Tillsammans med data som Atlas Copco Rock Drills AB redan hade från tidigare mätningar på maskiner gjordes ett Excel-program, som ger ett exempel på hur alarmen bör monteras. Digital animators will save vast amounts of project time by starting with a completed skeleton and some base animations. This result can be accomplished with Web 2.0 technologies by creating a repository of skeletons and animations that any animator may use for free. While free Maya™ skeletons currently exist on the Internet, the websites housing them have only brief features and functions for browsing and interacting with these files. None of these websites contain downloadable animations for the provided skeletons. The Chimaera Project improves the field of Web 2.0 sites offering free rigs by offering many new features and freedoms to the animation community. Users may upload and download Maya™ skeletons, share comments and tips with each other, upload animations associated with the skeletons, and search or browse the skeletons in a variety of ways. The skeletons include descriptions and information provided by the creator and are categorized by class, order, and species. Users may access a freely provided script called “zooXferAnim” to import and export animations into text files to be uploaded and downloaded on the website. Many animations per skeleton may be uploaded. The Chimaera Project extends the Web 2.0 community by creating an interactive resource for animators to contribute and share content in a better, more organized format than previously seen on the Internet.

Development and analysis of a new component test for a sliding door system

The IKEA sliding door system is widely employed on IKEA’s wardrobes. In view of the massive usage of it, any optimization for reducing production costs is crucial. This work attempts to develop a special static test rig for a component of IKEA’s sliding door system. It will be used to check the quality of the component in production. The simulation-driven design method will be used in the entire process. Therefore, before proceeding with the details of the test rig, the priority should be given to the simulation. In particular, the nonlinear finite element method (FEM) will be used to identify the break load of the studied component. Finite element models were created in ABAQUS/Standard. Four kinds of POM were used to define the model’s material properties. Meanwhile the compression experiment were also conducted. Finite element models were used to predict the load capacity and compare it with the experimental results. The closest prediction in relation to the test results was 2124N, merely 6N smaller than the experimental results, giving the proof of a good finite element analysis. Based on the results of simulations and compression tests, a proper test rig consisting of a pneumatic system and load cell was selected from four concepts. The air cylinder can provide 3175N when the supplied air is 0.7MPa, which is fully met the design requirements with reasonable price.
