Leceta Gobitz, Rossina Alda 22 August 2014 (has links)
Tesis

Specters of Maelo: An Ethnographic Biography of Ismael 'Maelo' RiveraColon-Montijo, Cesar January 2018 (has links)
Ismael ‘Maelo’ Rivera (1931–1987) is a foundational Afro-Puerto Rican salsa singer. Known among his fans, peers, and contemporary researchers as El Sonero Mayor (loosely, The Greatest Singer-Improviser), Maelo’s voice became inscribed in the aural tapestry of barrios in Latin America and the Caribbean, beginning in the mid-1950s. After his death on May 13, 1987, Maelo has gained a sense of sacredness amongst fans and devotees who identify themselves as maeleros and maelistas in places such as Panama, Venezuela, and Puerto Rico. My interlocutors ascribe Maelo’s songs with a particular affective strength that for them differentiates him from other salsa singers. His music has become the medium for the creation of relational bonds that respond to their particular local contexts as well as their personal and collective histories. In both countries, maeleros and maelistas listen to his songs as stories where they find keys to endure the difficulties of day-to-day life in their respective socio-political, cultural, and economic situations. This dissertation studies the friendships and relational affinities maeleros and maelistas articulate through Maelo’s music and biography, examining the creative work they do in order to celebrate his presence in their everyday.
I argue that Maelo inspires a sense of secular devotion amongst his fans through the ways in which he mediates the crossing of the sacred and the profane through his repertoire and life by voicing multiple expressions from diverse Black Atlantic religions. I understand the sense of communion maeleros and maelistas share as a devotional sense of kinship in which friendship, and mainly male friendships, are central. I propose that such mediations of the sacred, and the Maelo-centered sense of devotional kinship I study, must be framed in relation to larger histories of the political definition of life in Latin America and the Caribbean. In such histories, the spectrality of the voice has served both as a tool for casting Black and indigenous groups as unworthy of citizenship and as a means for these groups to endure such marginalization. By examining the context-specific ways in which Maelo connoisseurs reinterpret his music and life in Venezuela, Panama, and Puerto Rico in his afterlife, this dissertation proposes that maeleros and maelistas enact a political theology that dramatizes the contemporary stakes of larger bio-political histories in which illness has long-been connected to delinquency as tools of power used to police and discipline modern citizen bodies. This is vital to one of the central theses of this dissertation: that Maelo’s stories of vocal illness, addiction, and imprisonment—what I call his wounded masculinity—are key to the sense of sacredness he has gained during his afterlife as a spectral figure whose songs, images, and myth accompany his fans, peers, and devotees in their everyday.

Guidelines for mineral exploration are normally based on models conceptualized for a certain type of deposit been investigated. These guidelines are normally based on geologists experience in a certain kind of mineralization, descriptive and genetical data, and expertise judgement. A numerical probabilistic and not probabilistic approach to predict the occurrence of a certain type of deposit at a certain place is a new procedure which started to gain acceptance among the exploration community. This thesis uses recent methodologies based on Geographical Information Systems (GIS) to generate mineral favorability maps for gold exploration. A case study at Rivera Crystalline Island, Paraná’s basin erosion, situated in northern Uruguay illustrate the method. To build favorability maps five sources of data and information were used and integrated, including: 1) satelite images; 2) geochemical survey; 3) airborne geophysical survey; 4) geo-structural mapping and 5) altimetry. These informations were combined with a conceptual model based on the characteristics of existent mines in region, mainly the San Gregorio Mine. The conceptual model included descriptive and genetic characteristics of San Gregorio Gold Mine, which is the most significant known gold occurrence in the region. The construction of favorability maps involved database preparation, data processing and the use of tools to integrate all different informations. During data processing distinct maps were generated and disposed in layers (Information Layers) for further integration. The multiple layers were organised in various groups named Integration Factors; i.e. geophysical factor, geochemical factor, etc. Afterwards, the layers were combined using two distinct methodologies, named: 1) Weights of Evidence (data driven) and 2) Fuzzy Logic (knowledge driven). Favorability maps resulted from using the two above mentioned techniques. Resultant maps from both methods indicated high favorability at known occurences validating the approach. The maps also coincides in showing high favorability at various other sites within the Rivera Crystalline Island. Weights of Evidence delineated smaller high favorable areas when compared to Fuzzy Logic based maps. However, Weigths of Evidence produced higher probability within the favorable zone when compared to the maps generated using Fuzzy Logic framework. New exploration targets were identified and should be object of detailed investigation.

Chapingo: Capela / Chapingo: chapelAntônio Leandro Gomes de Souza Barros 29 March 2011 (has links)
This paper is a re-reading proposal for the set murals inside the Chapingos Chapel, Mexico. Such critice of art are related to appropiation of a methodology derived from the own notion of chapel. The objetive of this proposal and methodology is to present the details involved in the key-concept of support-chapel not only as a religius espace, but as artistic medium too

Toward a Deleuzean theory of translation : a translation of, and commentary on, 'A fuego eterno condenados'Kelly, James Christopher January 2016 (has links)
This translation and commentary thesis presents a theory of literary translation based on the ideas of Gilles Deleuze, informed by and applied to a translation of parts 0, 1 and 2 of the novel A fuego eterno condenados (1994) by Chilean author Roberto Rivera Vicencio. Using an approach based on the iterative development of a theoretical framework and translation, it examines how specific translation problems from the text can contribute to and benefit from a translation theory based on the ideas of Deleuze. Analysing the work of Lawrence Venuti as indicative of a shift by Translation Studies from thinking of translation in terms of equivalence to thinking of it in terms of difference, the thesis builds on Venuti’s research, offering a systematic treatment of Deleuze’s earlier work to theorise translation as the production of simulacra in which the translator creates solutions in the domain of the Actual to a translation problem that exists in the Virtual. It then goes on to examine Deleuze’s later work, written in collaboration with F ́elix Guattari, to develop a conceptual framework based on the concept of the texture of prose derived from the principles of a minor, or nomad, science. This framework is used to address specific problems arising in the translation, deriving a series of practical techniques and considerations that can be used to create this kind of texture in the application of a Deleuzean theory of translation to literary texts.
