Adoption of open access publishing for scholarly communication by academic staff at the University of LimpopoShoroma, Moritidi Abigail January 2021 (has links)
Thesis (M.A. ( Information Studies)) -- University of Limpopo, 2021 / This study aimed to examine the extent of awareness and the adoption of Open Access (OA) publishing for the purpose of scholarly communication by academic staff at the University of Limpopo (UL). The study was guided by Rogers’ Diffusion of Innovation theory (1) to measure the level of awareness of academics on the availability and use of OA resources; (2) to determine the adoption and usage levels of OA publishing as a platform for information sharing by academics in scholarly communication; (3) to establish academics’ attitudes towards the use of the OA publishing platforms; and (4) to identify perspectives of academic staff with regards to challenges and benefits presented by OA publishing. A dominantly quantitative research approach was adopted using a google forms questionnaire with closed ended questions to collect data from 250 academics at the University of Limpopo. Academics were selected using the systematic simple random sampling method. To ensure the survey instrument’s reliability and validity, the researcher conducted a pilot study through a web-based survey. A descriptive statistics method of the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) was used to analyse data.
The study established that the majority (82%) of academics were aware of OA publishing platforms. The internet and subject librarians were the main communication channels through which they became aware of OA publishing. The study also found that there was minimal the adoption and usage of OA publishing among academics. Their attitudes towards OA and their perceptions of the benefits and challenges of OA. The general attitudes of academics about OA were positive, signifying the acceptance of this scholarly communication mode. However, some of the challenges encountered in adopting and using OA publishing include slow internet connectivity and access, publication charges by some publishers, lack of skills to publish online, power interruptions, lack of policies on OA, fake and predatory
v
publishers and OA articles not being peer-reviewed. These were reported as problems that directly or indirectly hinder academics from publishing in OA platforms. The study recommends the institutionalisation of OA publishing at UL to improve research output dissemination. An area for further research will be to establish more insights regarding the feasibility of OA development and possible ways of dealing with article processing fees.

Experiences with Exposure to a Distant Reiki Intervention during the COVID-19 PandemicDiBenedetto, Jennifer 04 January 2022 (has links)
Purpose: The purpose of the study was to explore the use of virtual distant Reiki as a healing modality to influence the human environmental field patterning.
Specific Aims: (1) To determine if it is feasible to recruit and retain participants (through expressions of human choice) to participate in a study comprised of two distant Reiki administrations on a virtual platform. (2) To investigate the preliminary influence of a distant Reiki intervention on pattern of the whole as manifested by participant response in stress and anxiety. (3) To explore the participant’s reflections on their virtual distant Reiki experience within the human environmental field pattern of their home environment as a healing space.
Theoretical Framework: The theoretical framework is grounded in Martha Rogers’ Science of Unitary Human Beings.
Design: This study incorporates a feasibility, mixed method design. Data was collected through pre and post intervention individualized interviews and two tools (State Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI) and Impact of Events Scale-Revised (IES-R)).
Results: Described changed in pattern manifestation supported the need for home-based interventions during covid 19 pandemic. Quantitative response indicated a statistically significant reduction in perceived stress and anxiety (p< 0.001).
Conclusion: The preliminary study findings support the feasibility of a distant Reiki and suggest that nurses, who are Reiki practitioners, may be influential in interacting with the human environmental field to promote change and foster healing.

The organizational cultures of Ontario Schools of Nursing: A grounded theory study to explain the adoption and incorporation of simulationTaplay, Karyn 04 1900 (has links)

Background: Internationally, simulation has been widely used as a teaching strategy in nursing programs. In Ontario, Canada, simulation has gained increasing acceptance and use in nursing education and has been met with a parallel investment of resources. Current literature offers insights into individual-level factors that contribute to the adoption and incorporation of simulation but there is a lack of understanding of how organizational factors shape this this educational strategy.

Objective: The purpose of this grounded theory study was to create a mid-range explanatory theory that describes how the organizational cultures of undergraduate nursing programs shape the adoption and incorporation of mid- to high-level simulation as a teaching and learning strategy.

Methods: Constructivist grounded theory was used to guide this research.

Results: A seven-phase process related to adopting and incorporating simulation into nursing curricula was uncovered. Sites that moved through the phases of the process and integrated simulation into all levels of the curriculum were classified as high-uptake. The level of uptake of simulation by nursing programs influenced the potential outcomes. From the findings, a theory was developed: the Organizational Elements that Shape Simulation in Nursing (OESSN) that includes five key organizational elements that shape the adoption and incorporation of simulation in nursing curricula.

Conclusion: This theory provides nursing programs with insight about the core organizational concepts that influence the adoption and incorporation of simulation within their curricula. The OESSN highlights the organizational elements to be cognizant of when adopting and incorporating simulation and perhaps other technological innovations within nursing curricula.
/ Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)

Wrestling heart : the autoethnographic faith journey of a developing psychologistWittstock, Luke Jonathan 04 1900 (has links)
This autoethnography tells the story of my faith journey with a special focus on my years as a Catholic seminarian and the change towards embarking on a career as a clinical psychologist. Pertinent childhood experiences are also shared to contextualise my story. The narrative, “Wrestling Heart”, is the centre and the produced data of this autoethnography. As an “evocative” narrative, it independently seeks to fulfil many of the goals of an autoethnography, such as being therapeutic for both writer and readers, and imbuing culture with critical thinking. The sharing of the narrative is augmented with a thematic analysis of it and Carl Rogers’ Person-Centred Approach is mainly used to comprehend the gleaned themes. The movement towards a comprehension of my experience is consistent with the philosophical foundation of this study: phenomenology. It is envisaged that the utility of this study lies primarily in its interrogation of the relationship between religion and mental health, its in-depth depiction of an individual grappling with their faith in relation to mental health, and the way in which the writing of this autoethnography therapeutically fostered greater congruence for me the writer, as I prepare to work as a clinical psychologist. / Psychology / M.A. (Clinical Psychology)

Kvalita nosného vztahu a zaměřenost na cíl jako účinný faktor v sociální práci / The quality of supporting relationship and aim directivity as a successful factor in social workŠICNEROVÁ, Věra January 2015 (has links)
The diploma thesis The quality of supporting relationship and aim directivity as a successful factor in social work was written by Šicnerová Věra, Faculty of Theology of the University of South Bohemia. The supervisor of the thesis is Lhotová Marie, PhDr. Ing. Ph.D. Key words: aim, emotions, client, indirect approach, Rogers, empathy, interaction, communication, conflict, social work, social worker, relationship. The diploma thesis describes the development of a social therapeutic relationship between a client and a social worker which is based on non - evaluating approach of the social worker and in the connection with a suitable follow-up aim. The information about the conditions of a quality relationship which is needed for communication between the client and the social worker in a social therapeutic relationship is included in the thesis. Dangers and inappropriate approaches which can ruin suitable selection and the realization of aim are mentioned too. The thesis defines vocational qualities of social workers which can make the relationship development easier. It also presents attributes of social workers and clients, which can on the contrary disrupt or thwart this development. The diploma thesis illustrates that the relationship between social workers and clients is a determinative factor for a successful definition and realization of the social therapeutic process aim.

'Paper gypsies' : representations of the gypsy figure in British literature, c.1780-1870Drayton, Alexandra L. January 2011 (has links)
Representations of the Gypsies and their lifestyle were widespread in British culture in the late-eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. This thesis analyzes the varying literary and artistic responses to the Gypsy figure in the period circa 1780-1870. Addressing not only well-known works by William Wordsworth, Jane Austen, Walter Scott, John Clare, Robert Browning, Matthew Arnold and George Eliot, but also lesser-known or neglected works by Gilbert White, Hannah More, George Crabbe and Samuel Rogers, unpublished archival material from Princess Victoria's journals, and a range of articles from the periodical press, this thesis examines how the figure of the Gypsy was used to explore differing conceptions of the landscape, identity and freedom, as well as the authoritative discourses of law, religion and science. The influence of William Cowper's Gypsy episode in Book One of The Task is shown to be profound, and its effect on ensuing literary representations of the Gypsy is an example of my interpretation of Wim Willem's term ‘paper Gypsies': the idea that literary Gypsies are often textual (re)constructions of other writers' work, creating a shared literary, cultural and artistic heritage. A focus on the picturesque and the Gypsies' role within that genre is a strong theme throughout this thesis. The ambiguity of picturesque Gypsy representations challenges the authority of the leisured viewer, provoking complex responses that either seek to contain the Gypsy's disruptive potential or demonstrate the figure's refusal to be controlled. An examination of texts alongside contemporary paintings and sketches of Gypsies by Princess Victoria, George Morland, Thomas Gainsborough, J. M. W. Turner, John Constable and John Everett Millais, elucidates the significance of the Gypsies as ambiguous ciphers in both literature and art.
