Computational study of rovibrational spectra of Van der Waals dimers and their isotopologues

A new intermolecular potential energy surface, rovibrational transition frequencies, and line strengths are computed for OCS-OCS and CO2-CS2. The potentials were made by fitting energies obtained from explicitly correlated coupled-cluster calculations and fit using an interpolating moving least squares method. Rovibrational transition frequencies are also calculated for four isotopologues of the N2O dimer using a previously presented potential energy surface. The rovibrational Schroedinger equation for all three dimers is solved with a symmetry-adapted Lanczos algorithm and an uncoupled product basis set. All four intermolecular coordinates are included in the calculation. On the OCS-OCS potential energy surface, a previously unknown, cross-shaped isomer is found along with polar and non-polar isomers. For CO2-CS2, the previously found cross-shaped minima is found along with a slipped-parallel configuration. The associated wavefunctions and energy levels for each of these isomers is presented. To identify states that have a permanent dipole, both calculations of line strengths and vibrational parent analysis is used. For non polar states of, OCS-OCS, and N2O-N2O isotopologues, and all CO2-CO2 states, only vibrational parent analysis was used. Development of a Rotational Shear Vane for use in Avalanche Safety Work

This Masters Thesis describes the continuation of the Snow Probe development. The focus of this project was to establish the rotational shear vane as a useful tool in avalanche safety work as well as develop a robust method for measuring the applied torque. A new and novel way of measuring the torque on a rotational shear vane has been developed to illustrate its effectiveness. The new system measures the power supplied to a cordless drill to get an indication of the applied torque. This was done because it was found that the earlier method of using a strain gauge/cantilever system repeatedly failed to work, largely due to complexity. The snow probe in its present embodiment has been shown to provide a good clear indication of the snow profile under easily repeated circumstances. Shear strength results are at this stage not sufficiently for reliable quantitative results. However the probe in its present form is able to give pictorial impressions of the snow pack that compare well to current hand hardness profiles derived from snow pit methods. Even in its current form the snow probe is able to collect useful snow profile data in a matter of minutes, much quicker than conventional snow pit methods. A loose relationship was found to exist between the approach angle of a shear vane blade and the clarity of the snow profile. These relationships are relatively inaccurate at present due to lack of rotational velocity data and therefore pproach angle data. It is believed that the addition of a rotation counter would greatly increase the accuracy of the probe results and enable a shear strength profile to be quantified. Further developments and testing are underway with a view to forming a company around the snow probe.

ENGINEERING SPORT SAFETY: A STUDY OF EQUESTRIAN CROSS COUNTRY EVENTING

The sport of equestrian cross country eventing has seen many serious and even fatal injuries due to rotational horse falls in recent years. The sport originally consisted of horse and rider teams jumping stationary, wood fences. However, in a move towards increasing safety for horses and riders, frangible and deformable safety devices have been emerging in the field. This thesis provides an overview of safety designs that are currently available and those that are on the horizon. Also, a path-finder method of evaluating and developing safety fence designs was outlined and applied to two distinct designs, a hinged gate and a collapsible table fence. A full size prototype of the hinged gate was constructed and tested in the field in two different locations. The collapsible table fence design was developed and then a ½ geometric scale prototype was constructed to demonstrate design feasibility and to analyze design development challenges.

Searching for Simple Symmetric Venn Diagrams

An n-Venn diagram is defined as a collection of n finitely intersecting closed curves dividing the plane into 2^n distinct regions, where each region is in the interior of a unique subset of the curves. A Venn diagram is simple if at most two curves intersect at any point, and it is monotone if it has some embedding on the plane in which all curves are convex. An n-Venn diagram has n-fold rotational symmetry if a rotation of 180 degrees about a centre point in the plane leaves the diagram unchanged, up to a relabeling of the curves. It has been known that rotationally symmetric Venn diagrams could exist only if the number of curves is prime. Moreover, non-simple Venn diagrams with rotational symmetry have been proven to exist for any prime number of curves. However, the largest prime for which a simple rotationally symmetric Venn diagram was known prior to this, was 7. In this thesis, we are concerned with generating simple monotone Venn diagrams, especially those that have some type(s) of symmetry. Several representations of these diagrams are introduced and different backtracking search algorithms are provided based on these representations. Using these algorithms we show that there are 39,020 non-isomorphic simple monotone 6-Venn diagrams in total. In the case of drawing Venn diagrams on a sphere, we prove that there exists a simple symmetric n-Venn diagram, for any n >= 6, with the following set(s) of isometries : (a) a 4-fold rotational symmetry about the polar axis, together with an additional involutional symmetry about an axis through the equator, or (b) an involutional symmetry about the polar axis together with two reflectional symmetries about orthogonal planes that intersect at the polar axis. A Herschel/HIFI study of Water in Two Intermediate-Mass Star Forming Regions: Vela IRS 17 and Vela IRS 19

While the single core accretion model for low mass star formation is well developed, it cannot simply be extended into the high mass star formation regime where clustered star formation dominates. The study of intermediate-mass star formation should provide us with insights into how the process of star formation changes for high mass stars. In this thesis observations of H2O line emission from two intermediate-mass candidate Young Stellar Objects (YSOs) made using the HIFI instrument aboard the Herschel Space Observatory are presented. Modelling of molecular line emission using the radiative transfer code RATRAN is used to put constraints on kinematics and the abundance of water throughout the region by modelling the observed water lines after decomposing them into separate Gaussian components. The medium component of the 752 GHz line from Vela IRS 17 was modelled by using a turbulent velocity of 1.7 km s^-1 and an outer abundance of 6x10^-8. The narrow component of the 752 GHz line from Vela IRS 19 could be modelled using a turbulent velocity of 0.6 km s^-1 and an outer abundance of 6x 10^-8, while the medium component required an outer abundance of 4 x 10^-7 with a turbulent velocity of 2.5 km s^-1. The constraints on water abundance in these star-forming regions are to be used along with studies of water in low and high mass star-forming regions in the effort to improve our understanding of star formation across the entire stellar mass spectrum.

The implicit and low-level part definition data, provided by geometric modeling cannot be used by downstream applications. Therefore, feature based modeling concept has been introduced to integrate CAD and downstream applications. However, due to the lack of implicit and explicit standard representations for features and unmanageable number of possible predefined features without standardization, feature based modeling approach has proved to be inadequate. STEP AP224 provides a standard for both implicit and explicit representations for manufacturing features. This thesis presents STEP AP224 features based modeling for rotational parts. The thesis covers features extracted from STEP AP224 for rotational parts and their definitions, classifications, attributes, generation techniques, attachment methods and geometrical constraints. In this thesis a feature modeler for rotational parts has been developed. STEP AP224 features generated are used as the basic entities for part design. The architecture of the proposed system consists of two three phases: (1) feature library, (2) feature modeler and (3) preprocessor. Preprocessor responsible from STEP-XML data file creation. The data file created can be used in the integration CAPP/CAM systems without using a complex feature recognition process. An object-oriented design approach is used in developing the feature modeler to provide incremental system development and reusability.

An improved multicriterion analysis approach to avoid subjectivity in irrigation water allocation decisions

The performance of the century-old irrigation system of Pakistan (i.e. warabandi) has been evaluated using socio-economic data gathered by the author in multiple farmers?? surveys (n=278) conducted in Indus Basin of Pakistan. In the surveyed regions, the warabandi system was performing poorly. In-built rigidity in water allocations was found as main reason behind its poor performance. The results from the farmers?? surveys also revealed that the objective of increasing irrigation water productivity would never be attained under the warabandi arrangements. Hence, a completely new concept that could replace the warabandi system and improve the productivity of limited irrigation water should be introduced. My aim was to find a better way to allocate the scarce water resource between farmers. In this study, I have introduced a new concept for determining water allocations among the farmers, which is based on a multicriterion decision making (MCDM) approach. The consideration of multiple criteria in irrigation water allocations would improve irrigation water productivity. Upon an extensive survey of well-known MCDM methods, I concluded that all previously existing MCDM methods were using subjective inputs, usually from a single modeller, to establish priorities of alternatives and therefore, a predetermined solution could easily be obtained. I have developed an approach based on conjoint analysis which removes that subjectivity from the chosen MCDM method (i.e. ELECTRE). Interval scales and relative importance criteria weights, two usually subjective inputs in ELECTRE, are objectively estimated from the conjoint analysis study. For that purpose, the author designed a conjoint questionnaire and administered it to 62 farmer respondents in face-to-face interviews. Conjoint analysis, which does not appear to have been previously used in water resources or allocation studies, is a method for creating the interval scales and the relative criteria weights objectively from the respondents?? judgements on the importance of conjoint objects. The objective estimation of these two important factors is a completely new development which can assist in the unbiased determination of the best division or allocation of scarce water resources between farmers. The approach is applied, as a demonstration, to a region with nine distributary watercourses to determine which of the distributaries should have the highest priority for allocation of the regional water.

Characterisation of the mechanisms of magnetisation change in permanent magnet materials through the interpretation of hysteresis measurements

The mechanisms by which magnetisation changes occur in magnetic materials may be investigated by a variety of hysteresis measurements. During this study both alternating and rotational hysteresis measurements were used to characterise the mechanisms of magnetisation change in a number of permanent magnet materials. Studies of the time dependence of magnetisation, remanent magnetisations and the dependence of the reversible magnetisation on the irreversible magnetisation were undertaken. These studies revealed that in sintered rare-earth iron magnets the magnetisation change is predominately controlled by domain nucleation, with a lesser contribution from domain wall pinning within the boundary regions of the grains. Similar mechanisms control the magnetisation change in the larger grains of melt-quenched rare-earth iron magnets. In the single domain grains of the melt-quenched materials incoherent rotation mechanisms control the changes of magnetisation. Magnetisation change in MnAlC and sintered AlNiCo was found to be controlled by domain wall pinning within the interior of the grains of the materials. Two devices were constructed for the measurement of rotational hysteresis. The first measures the angular acceleration of a sample set spinning in a magnetic field, from which the rotational hysteresis loss may be determined. The second employs rotating search coils to make direct measurements of the component of magnetisation that contributes to rotational hysteresis loss during the rotation of a sample in a field. Both devices were found to produce data consistent with that in the literature and to be useful for the characterisation of rotational hysteresis in permanent magnet materials. A simple model was used to examine the dependence of rotational hysteresis loss on various material parameters. It was found that the value of the rotational hysteresis integral is dependent on interactions and to a lesser extent distributions in anisotropy. This is contrary to assumptions commonly made in the literature but consistent with published experimental data, which has been reinterpreted. Measurements of rotational hysteresis losses in the materials studied were found to be effected by geometric demagnetisation effects. A method by which such data may be corrected for these effects is proposed. Following correction and consideration of the interactions within the materials, the rotational hysteresis data was found to be consistent with the characterisations performed in linearly alternating fields.
