An examination of the conducting method of Hideo Saito

Valent, Joseph Arthur January 2000 (has links)
The ideas of Hideo Saito regarding conducting and conducting pedagogy are a valuable addition to the field, an addition that English-speaking people are likely to be unfamiliar with. Besides devising a unique collection of terms for talking about conducting, and assembling a set of exercises designed to facilitate the practice of a variety of gestures, Saito develops and operates from a framework which allows for the description and evaluation of almost any conceivable rhythmic gesture. While he pays attention to time, space, direction, size, and expectations, he often explores the ways velocity and changes in velocity can be employed to elicit desired sounds from players and singers. He is certainly not the first teacher to focus on the role of velocity in conducting gestures. However, the level of sophistication and thoroughness of his examination of velocity, and changes in velocity, is unique. His diagrams are noteworthy as well.Saito's conducting method is very popular in Japan. Seiji Ozawa, the Music Director/Conductor of the Boston Symphony Orchestra for more than 25 years, is just one of Saito's students who have had very successful conducting careers. This dissertation, in combination with accompanying videotaped examples of Morihiro Okabe teaching in the authentic Saito tradition, will provide the reader with an introduction to and an evaluation of the Saito conducting method. The reader will learn how to interpret Saito's diagrams of conducting motions, discover who the key people are, and view a Saito teacher instructing students. The reader will be introduced to the core teachings of Professor Saito, see what Saito's primary musical exercises are, and see how these exercises are used to promote musical and technical competence in conducting. This dissertation seeks to give the reader a foundation for further investigation of Saito's ideas and practices. This dissertation proposes, and employs English names for many gestures Saito labeled in Japanese. The Japanese terms are very descriptive of the motions. Providing equally descriptive English terms should be helpful to readers who are not fluent in Japanese. / School of Music

Transfert de chiralité dans les réarrangements en cascade d'ènediynes / Chirality transfer in cascade rearrangements of enediynes

Campolo, Damien 13 December 2013 (has links)
The asymmetric synthesis of azaheterocycles (tetrahydorisoquinolines and naphthodiazepines) was successfully achieved via the polar/radical cross-over rearrangement of enediynes bearing a stereogenic center. This process involves successively : enyne-allene formation (via 1,3-proton shift, reaction of a terminal alkyne group with carbenoids or Crabbé homologation)/Saito-Myers cyclization/1,5-hydrogen atom transfer/biradical recombination. It was ideally suited to apply a strategy based on the memory of chirality phenomenon. Mechanistic studies based on isotopic labelling and theoretical calculations enabled to go deeper into the understanding of the parameters controlling the regio- and the stereoselectivity of the reaction. The ambition to control two stereogenic centers via double memory of chirality, led us to investigate the transfer of the axial chirality of a designed allenic moiety. This study led to the discovery of an original copper (I)-mediated cycloisomerization leading to chiral fulvenes and proceeding via central-to-axial-to-central double chirality transfer.

Optimization over nonnegative matrix polynomials

Cederberg, Daniel January 2023 (has links)
This thesis is concerned with convex optimization problems over matrix polynomials that are constrained to be positive semidefinite on the unit circle. Problems of this form appear in signal processing and can often be solved as semidefinite programs (SDPs). Interior-point solvers for these SDPs scale poorly, and this thesis aims to design first-order methods that are more efficient. We propose methods based on a generalized proximal operator defined in terms of a Bregman divergence. Empirical results on three applications in signal processing demonstrate that the proposed methods scale much better than interior-point solvers. As an example, for sparse estimation of spectral density matrices, Douglas--Rachford splitting with the generalized proximal operator is about 1000 times faster and scales to much larger problems. The ability to solve larger problems allows us to perform functional connectivity analysis of the brain by constructing a sparse estimate of the inverse spectral density matrix.

Kombinované vícepásmové adaptivní zvýraznění řeči / Composite Subband Adaptive Speech Enhancement

Hovorka, Jaroslav January 2016 (has links)
The thesis deals with single channel and multiple channel algorithms for speech enhancement. The goal of this work is to perform the deep analysis of both single channel and multiple channel algorithms in sense of their behaviour in noisy environment of combat vehicles and platforms. Based on this analysis a new composite speech enhancement algorithm will be designed. This new approach is expected to increase quality of the processed speech in military communications systems. These systems are characterised by their operation under very noisy conditions where background noise is very high and signal-to-noise ratio extremely low. These noisy conditions are typical for the range of military and combat platforms and vehicles.

Exploring Structure and Reactions : Computational Studies on Three-Membered Rings, Metal-Boron Multiple Bonds and Biradical Reactions

Mallick, Dibyendu January 2013 (has links) (PDF)
The utility of computational study lies not only in rationalizing a chemical phenomenon but also in its predictive value. Broadly, the scope of my research work includes understanding of the structure and bonding of molecules as well as reaction mechanisms using computational techniques. Here I will discuss three research problems where computational results successfully rationalize and predict the experimental outcome. Firstly, we will describe the electronic structure and bonding of all the possible cyclic isomers of B2AlHnm (where n =3D 3 =96 6 and m =3D -2 to 1) = which is isoelectronic to the cyclopropenyl cation.1 A comparative study among all the isomers of homocyclic and heterocyclic three- membered boron and aluminum hydrides has also been done to understand the factors that differentiate their hydride chemistry. We will also discuss about two different approaches to stabilize neutral planar B3R3 rings. In a mechanistic study, we have designed a a priori system which can undergo two competing biradical generating processes, namely the Myers-Saito (MS) and Garratt-Braverman (GB) Cyclizations.2,3 We will present a detailed mechanistic study of both the reactions, which indicates the preference of the GB cyclization over MS cyclization. The theoretical prediction is in agreement with the experimental findings. We will also describe a conformational constraint-based strategy to switch the selectivity from GB to MS/Schmittel pathway.4 In another study, we will talk about a DFT study to illustrate the effect of the a) solvent, b) ancillary ligand, (L) c) leaving group, (Hal) and d) metal (M) on the equilibrium between metal boryl (1) and borylene (2) complexes (Scheme 1).5,6

Surface Free Energy Evaluation, Plasma Surface Modification And Biocompatibility Studies Of Pmma

Ozcan, Canturk 01 August 2006 (has links) (PDF)
PMMA is a widely used biomaterial especially in the fields of orthopedia, orthodontia and ophthalmology. When biocompatibility is considered, modification of the biomaterials&amp / #8217 / surface may be needed to optimize interactions of the biomaterial with the biological environment. After the surface modifications one of the most important changes that occur is the change in the surface free energy (SFE). SFE is an important but an obscure property of the material and evaluation methods with different assumptions exist in the literature. In this study, SFE of pristine and oxygen plasma modified PMMA films were calculated by means of numerous theoretical approaches (Zisman, Saito, Fowkes, Berthelot, Geometric and Harmonic Mean and Acid-Base) using numerous liquids and the results were compared to each other to elucidate the differences of methods. Dispersive, polar, acidic and basic components of the SFE were calculated by the use of different liquid couples and triplets with the application of Geometric and Harmonic mean methods and Acid-Base approach. The effect of SFE and the components of SFE on the cell attachment efficiencies were examined by using fibroblast cells. It was observed that with the treatment of oxygen plasma, cell attachment capability and hydrophilicity of PMMA surfaces were altered depending on the applied power and duration of the plasma.
