Hromadné generování grafických prezentací / Batch generation of graphical presentations

This thesis describes design and implementation of system that allows batch generation of graphical presentations. The system also includes modules for image quality evaluation using no-reference blur metric and salient object detection. Selected methods for evaluation of image quality are described in detail and implemented in corresponding chapters, including proposed modifications and changes. Blur detection is based on wavelet transform, and salient object detection is achieved by investigating image contrast. Capabilities of these modules are evaluated on suitable image datasets.

The diploma thesis concerns itself with the analysis of connection between the media exposure to refugeedom topics and the perceived salience of the issue. Combined qualitative and quantitative research designs ruled by QUAN → qual scheme are used in the thesis. In the quantitative part the effect of exposure to refugeedom-related news on the perceived salience of the subject is constructed using TV and newspaper viewing figures while controlling socio- demographic characteristics of respondents. Binary logistic regression was used to find the influence. The analysis shows that the exposure to content concerning immigration and refugees has influenced the rated importance of the issue. However, there are other variables not included in the model which are affecting the salience. The qualitative approach offers insights into the relationship discovered with quantitative methods. In-depth interviews showed people are aware of the media influence mainly regarding topics they are thinking about and discussing with their social surroundings. According to some interviewees this influence is stronger observed in topics where we lack personal experience, like the refugees. Les progrès récents en matière de télécommunications, collaboré avec le développement des dispositifs d'acquisition d’images et de vidéos a conduit à une croissance spectaculaire de la quantité des données vidéo stockées, transmises et échangées sur l’Internet. Dans ce contexte, l'élaboration d'outils efficaces pour accéder aux éléments d’information présents dans le contenu vidéo est devenue un enjeu crucial. Dans le Chapitre 2 nous introduisons un nouvel algorithme pour la détection de changement de plans vidéo. La technique est basée sur la partition des graphes combinée avec une analyse multi-résolution et d'une opération de filtrage non-linéaire. La complexité globale de calcul est réduite par l’application d'une stratégie deux passes. Dans le Chapitre 3 le problème d’abstraction automatique est considéré. Dans notre cas, nous avons adopté un système de représentation image-clés qui extrait un nombre variable d'images de chaque plan vidéo détecté, en fonction de la variation du contenu visuel. Le Chapitre 4 traite la segmentation de haut niveau sémantique. En exploitant l'observation que les plans vidéo appartenant à la même scène ont les mêmes caractéristiques visuelles, nous introduisons un nouvel algorithme de regroupement avec contraintes temporelles, qui utilise le seuillage adaptatif et les plans vidéo neutralisés. Dans le Chapitre 5 nous abordons le thème de détection d’objets vidéo saillants. Dans ce contexte, nous avons introduit une nouvelle approche pour modéliser l'attention spatio-temporelle utilisant : la correspondance entre les points d'intérêt, les transformations géométriques et l’estimation des classes de mouvement / Recent advances in telecommunications, collaborated with the development of image and video processing and acquisition devices has lead to a spectacular growth of the amount of the visual content data stored, transmitted and exchanged over Internet. Within this context, elaborating efficient tools to access, browse and retrieve video content has become a crucial challenge. In Chapter 2 we introduce and validate a novel shot boundary detection algorithm able to identify abrupt and gradual transitions. The technique is based on an enhanced graph partition model, combined with a multi-resolution analysis and a non-linear filtering operation. The global computational complexity is reduced by implementing a two-pass approach strategy. In Chapter 3 the video abstraction problem is considered. In our case, we have developed a keyframe representation system that extracts a variable number of images from each detected shot, depending on the visual content variation. The Chapter 4 deals with the issue of high level semantic segmentation into scenes. Here, a novel scene/DVD chapter detection method is introduced and validated. Spatio-temporal coherent shots are clustered into the same scene based on a set of temporal constraints, adaptive thresholds and neutralized shots. Chapter 5 considers the issue of object detection and segmentation. Here we introduce a novel spatio-temporal visual saliency system based on: region contrast, interest points correspondence, geometric transforms, motion classes’ estimation and regions temporal consistency. Concern regarding sustainability and climate change is increasing, which is forcing countries world-wide to take action. The Swedish government has set a goal of fossil-free tra_c until 2030. Battery Electric Buses (BEB) might be one of the solutions needed in order to reach this goal. However, currently its prevalence is at an early stage.   The purpose of this study is to investigate how the technological transition towards BEBs in Sweden a_ects the public transport operators (PTOs). Moreover, to investigate how a third party service provider of Fleet Management System (FMS) services can support the PTOs in this transition.   The research has been carried out in co-operation with a PTO and a FMS service provider. The research contributes to their current understanding of how they will be a_ected by the emerging technological transition. This thesis also contributes with new empirical data of the technological transition towards electric vehicles within public bus transport, seen as a Large Technical System. Conceptually it contributes, by exploring how external companies can support the technological transition towards BEBs, with the application of Technological Transitions theory and the Multi Layer Perspective framework.   The methodology used is a case study of the technological transition towards BEBs in Sweden. Data was collected through twelve semi-structured interviews with researchers, PTOs, public transport authorities (PTA), a BEB manufacturer and a FMS-service company. Parallel to this a questionnaire was distributed to the twenty largest PTOs in Sweden. Moreover data was collected from company visits, pilot-project results and internal documentation.   Our findings show that there are thirteen perceived barriers present among the PTOs, in the process of BEB adoption. Six of these barriers relate to component aspects of BEBs, and seven relate to managerial aspects. Perceived barriers linked to component aspects of BEBs are; Variation in solutions and lack of technical standards, the Charging infrastructure, Shorter range or decreased load capacity, Unknown functionality in cold climate, Reliability and Durability. Perceived barriers linked to managerial aspects of BEBs are; Lack of knowledge and experience, Behavioral change, Economy, Maintenance, Ownership of infrastructure and buses, Business models and Varying requirements from PTAs. The barriers FMS-service providers can address are primarily, due to the technological nature of the services, present at niche level. PTOs together with FMS-service providers are encouraged to together strive towards gaining deeper knowledge about the new emerging echnologies. Through this, PTOs could be enabled to overcome the aforementioned barriers. Three reverse salients were also identi_ed, linked to the aforementioned barriers. If the everse salients are assessed, BEB acceptance among PTOs could be increased. The three identi_ed reverse salients are, the battery technology, the charging infrastructure and the contracts/ownership. The co-operation with the commissioning PTO and FMS-service provider has led to valuable access to Swedish public transport actors, and has aided in a deeper understanding of the phenomena. Although, this co-operation might have exposed us to a risk of being influenced.

Contribution à la commande vectorielle sans capteur mécanique des machines synchrones à aimants permanents (MSAP)

Ce travail de recherche s'intéresse à la commande sans capteur mécanique du moteur synchrone à aimants permanents (MSAP) à pôles saillants, particulièrement en basse vitesse, avec détection de la position initiale du rotor. Après une présentation des techniques et approches qui ont initié nos travaux, en terme d'estimation de la vitesse et/ou de la position, nous avons choisi celles qui présentent plus d'intérêt de point de vue stabilité, robustesse, précision et simplicité d'implémentation. La première approche est basée sur le Système Adaptatif avec Modèle de Référence (MRAS). Quant à la deuxième, elle est réalisée autour d'un observateur non-linéaire pour l'estimation de la position et de la vitesse du MSAP à pôles saillants. Les deux techniques d'observation de la vitesse sont associées à une commande par orientation du flux rotorique avec la technique MLI vectorielle. Pour détecter la position initiale du rotor, nous avons utilisé une nouvelle approche qui permet d'estimer cette position avec une incertitude de ±5° mécanique. Cette nouvelle approche est basée sur l'application de signaux tests aux bornes des phases statoriques du MSAP. Des résultats de simulation et expérimentaux sont présentés tout au long de ces travaux pour valider les études théoriques de la commande vectorielle sans capteur mécanique du MSAP. Enfin, nous avons étudié et analysé les performances de la commande tolérante aux défauts sans capteur mécanique du MSAP en présence de défaillances de types transistors à l'état-off. / This research focuses on the sensorless vector control of a salient pole permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM), particularly at low speed, with detection of the initial rotor position. In first step, an overview of the state of the art concerning the estimation of the rotor speed as well as the initial rotor position of PMSM is addressed. From such a study, we have adopted an interesting strategy based on the model reference adaptive system (MRAS). The second step in this research consists in studying the performances and the feasibility of a non-linear observer for closed-loop vector control of salient pole PMSM. The MRAS technique as well as the non-linear observer is associated to a vector control scheme based on the field oriented strategy with space vector pulse width modulation (SVPWM). To detect the initial rotor position, we have proposed a new approach which estimates the position with a resolution of ±5° mechanical degrees. This new approach is based on applying short voltage pulses to the stator winding of salient pole PMSM. Several simulation and experimental results are presented to confirm the theoretical studies of the sensorless vector control of the salient pole PMSM drive. Finally, we have analyzed the performances of the sensorless speed fault tolerant control (FTC) of salient pole PMSM under failures related to the voltage source inverter (open circuit fault). The experimental results obtained based on the proposed techniques using nonlinear and MRAS observers have been improved in term of the reliability and allow a continuous operation of the salient pole PMSM drive even when it is supplied with two inverter legs.

Oceanographic Considerations for the Management and Protection of Surfing Breaks

Although the physical characteristics of surfing breaks are well described in the literature, there is little specific research on surfing and coastal management. Such research is required because coastal engineering has had significant impacts to surfing breaks, both positive and negative. Strategic planning and environmental impact assessment methods, a central tenet of integrated coastal zone management (ICZM), are recommended by this thesis to maximise surfing amenities. The research reported here identifies key oceanographic considerations required for ICZM around surfing breaks including: surfing wave parameters; surfing break components; relationship between surfer skill, surfing manoeuvre type and wave parameters; wind effects on waves; currents; geomorphic surfing break categorisation; beach-state and morphology; and offshore wave transformations. Key coastal activities that can have impacts to surfing breaks are identified. Environmental data types to consider during coastal studies around surfing breaks are presented and geographic information systems (GIS) are used to manage and interpret such information. To monitor surfing breaks, a shallow water multibeam echo sounding system was utilised and a RTK GPS water level correction and hydrographic GIS methodology developed. Including surfing in coastal management requires coastal engineering solutions that incorporate surfing. As an example, the efficacy of the artificial surfing reef (ASR) at Mount Maunganui, New Zealand, was evaluated. GIS, multibeam echo soundings, oceanographic measurements, photography, and wave modelling were all applied to monitor sea floor morphology around the reef. Results showed that the beach-state has more cellular circulation since the reef was installed, and a groin effect on the offshore bar was caused by the structure within the monitoring period, trapping sediment updrift and eroding sediment downdrift. No identifiable shoreline salient was observed. Landward of the reef, a scour hole ~3 times the surface area of the reef has formed. The current literature on ASRs has primarily focused on reef shape and its role in creating surfing waves. However, this study suggests that impacts to the offshore bar, beach-state, scour hole and surf zone hydrodynamics should all be included in future surfing reef designs. More real world reef studies, including ongoing monitoring of existing surfing reefs are required to validate theoretical concepts in the published literature.
