n' Ondersoekende studie na struikelblokke wat opvoeders ervaar, met verwysing na 'o spesiale skool

Magister Educationis - MEd / This study investigates the kinds of barriers experienced by teachers teaching in a special school in the processes of teaching and learning. This was done by launching an investigation to identify the barriers teachers experience during teaching and learning in a special school. In the process of doing so, emphasis was placed on barriers, which were identified for investigation purposes. The following barriers were identified for investigation: discipline, lifelong learning, collaboration between stakeholders, parent involvement, multicultural classes, handling of stress, support, development and the curriculum. In the end the people involved in the study identified more barriers. Some of these barriers were lack of finance, unsafe school environments and the weak infrastructure of the school where the study was done. The literature underlined the importance of the problem areas for success in a school or any organization, while the investigation clearly showed that everything was not in place for the school to be successful in the processes of teaching and learning. The investigation was successful in identifying the barriers teachers experienced and furthermore to make recommendations to rectify the situation. A total of nine teachers were part of the investigation, three from each section of the school, namely junior primary, the academic stream and the skills classes. All the participants gave their full support for the investigation and made valuable contributions to the success of the study. The participants were randomly selected and everyone had an equal opportunity to be part of the study. The study underlined the fear that teachers experience many barriers, which hamper them in their work . Something need to be done to help teachers in the system.

Abstract in Afrikaans Onderwyseresse is dikwels onseker oor die wyse waarop hulle tweede of addisionele taal graad R-leerders behoort te onderrig. Gevolglik stel hulle dieselfde kommunikasie-eise en op dieselfde wyse aan tweede taal leerders as aan moedertaalleerders. `n Groot aantal Suid-Afrikaanse graad R-leerders se basiese interaktiewe taalvaardighede in Engels as onderrigtaal, is dikwels nie op peil aan die einde van graad R nie, omdat hulle nie Engels magtig is by toetrede tot graad R nie. Gevolglik kan hierdie leerders se kognitiewe akademiese taalvaardighede nie toereikend ontwikkel in Engels nie en beskik hulle nie aan die einde van graad R oor doeltreffende kommunikasievaardighede vir skool-gereedheid nie. Vir die doel van hierdie studie is daar spesifiek gefokus op graad R-onderwyseresse asook op leerders se kommunikasievaardighede vir skoolgereedheid. `n Transformerend-opeenvolgende ontwerp bestaande uit `n gemengde metodiek van kwalitatiewe en kwantitatiewe benaderings in drie fases is vir die uitvoer van die studie geselekteer. Fase een het bestaan uit `n literatuurstudie, vir fase twee is graad R-onderwyseresse as deelnemers geselekteer en by fase drie is data van fases een en twee met mekaar vergelyk. Data-insameling het deur middel van vraelyste, `n onderhoudskedule vir semi-gestruktureerde onderhoude, en `n skedule vir die fokusgroepbespreking geskied. `n Omvattende ontwikkelingsgebaseerde lys voorvereistes van kommunikasievaardighede (die lys), is in die literatuur vir spraak-taalpatologie geïdentifiseer asook kommunikasievaardighede wat deur die amptelike graad R-kurrikulum geïmpliseer word. Resultate van fase twee het getoon dat graad R-onderwyseresse nie al die kommunikasievaardighede van graad R-leerders in ooreenstemming met die lys vereis het nie. Volgens fase drie se bevindinge het die onderwyseresse meer kommunikasievaardighede van leerders verwag as wat deur die graad R-kurrikulum geïmpliseer word. Die kliniese waarde van die studie is geleë in die feit dat riglyne verskaf word vir interaksie tussen graad R-onderwysers en leerders vir die fasilitering van taalontwikkeling by die leerders. Die navorsingsbevindinge beaam vorige bevindinge dat graad R-onderwysers kan baat by addisionele opleiding oor spraak-taalontwikkeling en kommunikasievaardighede vir skoolgereedheid. Hierdie addisionele opleiding kan gesamentlik volgens die model van samewerkende dienslewering deur die onderwysers en die spraak-taalterapeut beplan word. Die navorsingsresultate kan aangewend word as uitgangspunt vir toekomstige navorsing oor die problematiek wat deur hierdie navorsing geïdentifiseer is. Op grond van die gevolgtrekkings is kliniese implikasies en aanbevelings vir toekomstige navorsing geïdentifiseer. Nuclear energy in Africa : a legal framework for sustainable energy access / Michelle Barnard

The promotion of sustainable development is an objective shared by African Union (AU) member states and the pursuance thereof is expressly mandated by the Constitutive Act of the African Union, 2000 and the Treaty Establishing the African Economic Community, 1992. Lack of access to modern energy sources, such as electricity and the heavy reliance on traditional biomass as primary energy source are factors contributing to the non-achievement of the promotion of sustainable development. These factors are collectively referred to as energy poverty. The African Continent as a whole has limited, and in some instances, lack access to modern energy sources while the majority of its population relies heavily on traditional biomass as primary energy source. Africa can accordingly be classified as an energy poor region–a situation which does not bode well for the promotion of sustainable development. Access to reliable, affordable, economically viable, socially acceptable and environmentally sound energy services and resources is fundamental to socio-economic development. Mitigating the impacts of energy poverty and more specifically lack of access to modern energy sources on the sustainable development of Africa depends upon ensuring increased access to modern energy sources. The above-mentioned instruments furthermore contain provisions which link regional cooperation on the formulation of coordinated regional law and policy on areas/matters of common concern with the achievement of the objective of promoting sustainable development in Africa. One of the areas of common concerns listed is that of energy. Regional cooperation must accordingly be geared towards the effective development of the continent‘s energy and natural resources; promoting the development of new and renewable energy in the framework of the policy of diversification of sources of energy; and establishing an adequate mechanism of concerted action and coordination for the collective solution of the energy development problems within the AU. The formulation of coordinated energy law and policy should take place with reference to the specific sources of energy to be regulated. In this regard, the provisions of the Abuja Treaty and other sub-regional energy access initiatives list various sources of energy as forming part of a diversified AU energy mix – one of which is nuclear energy. In this study recommendations are made as to what should be embodied in a coordinated AU regional nuclear legal framework aimed at regulating increased access to nuclear energy capable of contributing towards the promotion of sustainable development. Knowledge management as a sustainable competitive advantage in the steel industry / Pieter Conradie

The aim of this study is to conduct a thorough theoretical study on the relevant aspects involved in knowledge management and organisational learning, and to assess the maturity level of knowledge management within the South African steel industry. Various aspects of knowledge, knowledge management and organisational learning with specific relation to sustainable competitive advantage are discussed in the literature study. During the literature research several factors which either promote or hinder the effective management of knowledge were identified and a list of lessons learned by other successful knowledge focused companies, are discussed. The critical success factors for a successful knowledge management program are also discussed. Knowledge can create a sustainable competitive advantage within an organisation, if successfully applied to make value adding decisions and to enable learning, and if it is applied to make decisions which are superior to that of its rivals across the supply chain. An integrated approach needs to be followed when KM is pursued and the knowledge must be applied to make value added decisions and facilitate learning across all processes in the value chain. The focus must be to retain an organisation’s tacit knowledge as this is a key success factor to ensure a sustainable competitive advantage. The study includes research on whether knowledge management is effectively used as a sustainable competitive advantage in the South African steel industry. The maturity level of the application of knowledge and learning principles implemented within the South African steel industry is assessed and compared to the maturity level of ArcelorMittal, Monlevade, located in Brazil. A survey was designed and distributed to determine the knowledge management and organisational learning maturity levels at two steel facilities of ArcelorMittal in South Africa and one facility in Brazil. The key problem areas as identified through the empirical research are discussed and it is concluded that South African facilities do not effectively use knowledge management as a sustainable competitive advantage. The maturity level of knowledge management in ArcelorMittal, South Africa is low compared to the maturity at Monlevade and rival companies such as Tata and Posco steel. A significant effort needs to be made in order to allow the effective creation, acquisition, sharing and leveraging of knowledge within the South African steel facilities. The key factors which constrain effective knowledge management is related to ineffective Human Resource policies, organisation structure, lack of knowledge exchange forums, collaboration and communication, coaching, and a lack of incentives to share tacit knowledge. It is also evident that knowledge is not seen as a sustainable competitive advantage by many respondents and that they perceive they do not have the time or capacity to transfer knowledge. Persepsie van grondslagfase-onderwysers en ouers aangaande die effektiwiteit van vestibulere oefeninge om sensoriese en motoriese ontwikkeling te bevorder

Abstracts in Afrikaans and English / Inklusiewe onderrig ondersteun die insluiting van alle leerders met verskillende behoeftes en vaardighede in klaskamers, wat baie keer te groot, of te verskillend vir doeltreffende onderrig is. Beweging as deel van ‘n vroeë leerervaring is noodsaaklik vir optimale neurale ontwikkeling. Dit beïnvloed organisasie en stimuleer die spesifieke neurologiese sisteme nodig vir optimale funksionering en ontwikkeling van die brein. Sensoriese integrasie disfunksie word gesien as die wortel van baie leerprobleme. Die vestibulêre sisteem is direk verbind met die sensoriese en motoriese sisteme. ‘n Sensoriese integrasie disfunksie het ‘n duidelike invloed op die vestibulêre sisteem. Die vestibulêre sisteem het baie interkonneksies met baie dele in die brein, byvoorbeeld propriosepsie en die tassisteem. Doeltreffende funksionering van die sensoriese, motoriese en vestibulêre sisteme word verlang vir ‘n hoë vlak van prestasieverrigting in sport en akademie. Wanneer die vestibulêre sisteem gestimuleer word, het dit ‘n direkte positiewe invloed op die sensoriese en motoriese ontwikkeling van leerders. Die doel van hierdie studie was om te bepaal wat die persepsie van grondslagfase-onderwysers en ouers is oor die rol en voordele wat vestibulêre oefeninge te weeg kan bring in die motoriese en sensoriese ontwikkeling van leerders. Leerders in graad 1 van ‘n privaatskool, asook van grade 2 en 3 van ‘n plaasskool is gekies as deelnemers in die studie. Die keuse van leerders was op grond van die bereidwilligheid van hulle en hul ouers om aan die studie deel te neem. Leerders het ‘n vestibulêre oefenprogram drie maal per week gedoen vir die tydperk van agt weke. Observasie-vraelyste is deur onderwysers en ouers ingevul na afloop van die derde sessie elke week. Vir die vraelys het ouers en onderwysers gekyk na die verbetering in aandagspan, konsentrasie, luistervaardigheid, oogkontak, sosiale interaksie en samewerking. Onderhoude is met ouers en onderwysers gedoen na aanleiding van die observasievraelyste wat vir die agt weke voltooi is. Transkripsies van die onderhoude is gedoen en afleidings is gemaak deur analise van die observasie-vraelyste en die getranskribeerde onderhoude. Al ses die ontwikkelingsareas by beide skole het verbetering getoon oor die agt weke. Dit dui daarop dat vestibulêre oefeninge wel ‘n invloed op die sensoriese en motoriese ontwikkeling het. / Inclusive education promotes the inclusion of learners with different needs and capabilities in classes which are often too big and diverse for effective teaching. Movement as an early learning experience is necessary for optimal neural development. It influences organisation and stimulates the specific neurological systems required for optimal functioning and development of the brain. Sensory integrative dysfunction is believed to be at the root of many learning disorders. The vestibular system is directly connected with the sensory and motor systems. The vestibular system will be directly affected when a sensory integrations dysfunction presents. In fact, the vestibular system has many interconnections with almost every other part of the brain like proprioception and the tactile system. Proper functioning of the sensory, motor and vestibular systems is required for higher level performance in sport and academics. When the vestibular system is stimulated, it will result in a positive influence on the sensory and motor development of learners. The aim of this study is to determine the perceptions of foundation phase teachers and parents regarding the role or benefits of vestibular exercises in promoting learners’ motor and sensory development. Learners in Grade 1 of a private school and Grade 2 and 3 learners of a farm school in the northern Free State were selected as participants in the research. Learners were selected on the basis of the willingness of them and their parents to participate in the research. The participants did exercise sessions three times a week for thirty minutes over a period of eight weeks. Observation sheets were completed for all eight weeks, for the duration of the exercise program, by teachers and parents. These sheets were completed weekly after the third sessions in that week. The observation sheets listed concentration, attention span, listening, eye contact, cooperation, social interaction and self-esteem as developmental areas. Interviews were done after the period of eight weeks with the parents and teachers. The interviews conducted with both parties were taped and meticulously transcribed. This helped the researcher to get a better understanding of the study and to analise data and draw conclusions.All six areas of development showed improvement at both schools over the period of eight weeks.
