Baron, Karel January 2002 (has links)
Magister Educationis - MEd / This study investigates the kinds of barriers experienced by teachers teaching in a special school in the processes of teaching and learning. This was done by launching an investigation to identify the barriers teachers experience during teaching and learning in a special school. In the process of doing so, emphasis was placed on barriers, which were identified for investigation purposes. The following barriers were identified for investigation: discipline, lifelong learning, collaboration between stakeholders, parent involvement, multicultural classes, handling of stress, support, development and the curriculum. In the end the people involved in the study identified more barriers. Some of these barriers were lack of finance, unsafe school environments and the weak infrastructure of the school where the study was done. The literature underlined the importance of the problem areas for success in a school or any organization, while the investigation clearly showed that everything was not in place for the school to be successful in the processes of teaching and learning. The investigation was successful in identifying the barriers teachers experienced and furthermore to make recommendations to rectify the situation. A total of nine teachers were part of the investigation, three from each section of the school, namely junior primary, the academic stream and the skills classes. All the participants gave their full support for the investigation and made valuable contributions to the success of the study. The participants were randomly selected and everyone had an equal opportunity to be part of the study. The study underlined the fear that teachers experience many barriers, which hamper them in their work . Something need to be done to help teachers in the system.

Bartlette, Nellie Monica January 2013 (has links)
The lack of respect for authority and discipline of teachers on the part of the learners is a factor contributing to low morale and sense of neglected status to teachers. These factors prevent true realisation of the idealism with which educators initially entered the profession, as they are faced with the realities in schools. The need for security and geborgenheit lay the foundation for security in the workplace of educators. The need for physical safety is described in this dissertation on the basis of contextual and theoretical frameworks, to a better understanding of teachers' insecurities. The need to experience geborgenheit appeals to the discipline of Education Law, which focuses inter alia on psychological security through an analysis of legal sources. It contributes to achieve the overall objective of this study, namely to determine the perceptions of educators regarding the impact of student misconduct on their security. Several factors, namely school-related factors, labour law factors as well as society related factors that learners come into contact with every day, contributes to misconduct by some learners. It therefore compels all stakeholders in education to become involved in the education of the students and not to perceive education as a "one-man job". From an employment perspective, the promotion of a safe environment, where learners and educators experience geborgenheit, a prerequisite for their physical and psychological security. This will contribute to the holistic performance of the educational task by the teacher for the benefit of the learners.

Oberholzer, Helena Susanna 11 August 2008 (has links)
This research project was done with the aim in mind to determine how teachers experience their lived through experience of job satisfaction in teaching. The qualitative research process was followed by making use of narrative methods such as narrative essays, interviews and observations. The essays and interviews served as basis for data collection purposes. If was essential for me as researcher, to find the reasons why teachers have negative and / or positive connotations towards certain teaching facets, and also to try and determine what their expectations, feelings and views are about education, so that I can determine how they experience teaching as a career. This research looked at the perceptions, viewpoints and experiences of individual teachers in relation to job satisfaction in teaching. Job satisfaction in teaching is essential, as it evolves around many different parties. It is therefore essential that a healthy organisational environment exists or is created at schools, so that effective teaching can take place. This research focus on factors that have an influence on job satisfaction and the implementation thereof to ensure maximum productivity and job satisfaction amongst teachers. This includes the role that the principal plays in creating a working environment where teachers can experience job satisfaction. / Dissertation (MEd)--University of Pretoria, 2008. / Education Management and Policy Studies / unrestricted

Invloed van agtergrondmusiek rakende graad 6-leerders se gedragspatrone

Hendriks, Marna January 2014 (has links)
The abolition of corporal punishment in South African schools led to greater discipline problems among students. Teachers are becoming increasingly frustrated as few practical solutions to this problem exist. This study examines the role that background music in the classroom can play in the child's ability to concentrate, increasing his positive behavior and so the improvement of discipline in the classroom. Background music is part of every child's world as modern technology makes listening to music part of everyday living. Learners listen to a large portion of music every day, even while they are doing homework. Therefore it was necessary to study the influence of background music as to what extend it can benefit the student in the classroom. This study used practical action research within a qualitative research design. From the relationship between the learner's behaviour and observations after classical instrumental music was played in the classroom, this type of background music can be used as a potential technique to improve discipline in the classroom. / Dissertation (MMus)--University of Pretoria, 2014. / am2014 / Music / unrestricted

Human resources management : the function of the public sector manager

Phosa, Lekgolo Lazarus 22 August 2012 (has links)
In this dissertation a study was undertaken of the function of the public sector manager at the central level of government and of the role which the public manager plays in the human resources management. South Africa is a three-tier state, which consists of the central, provincial and local levels of government. The central government is the supreme body of government entrusted with the responsibility of making policies, rules and giving direction to the entire citizenry. The central government is manned by politicians from different political parties who have to decide on behalf of their electorates. It is a given fact and a reality that politicians alone cannot deliver the services to the communities. So public officials are appointed to implement the policies enacted by Parliament. Public managers have to interpret policies and give direction to the various structures of government. Among the activities of government, public managers have also to give direction as to the management of human resources in the public sector. This study investigated the function of the public manager at the central government with a reference to the management of human resources. This research was necessitated by the fact that since the new constitutional dispensation in South Africa, many changes have taken place most of which implied that the management of human resources in the public sector would have to reflect such changes. Public managers perform various functions, including generic administrative functions, auxiliary functions and functional activities. These functions are performed at senior management level. Furthermore, these functions performed by public managers will be viewed from the human resource management. Particular, attention is focused on the staffing in the public sector and how public managers can best perform their function in absorbing proper personnel in the public sector. S.A. is daarom geen uitsondering nie. Ondersoek na die faktore wat werksbevrediging van opvoeders in voorheen-benadeelde skole in die Worcester-omgewing beinvloed / An investigation into the factors affecting educators work satisfaction at previous disadvantaged schools in the Worcester area

Aronse, Patrick Arnold 02 1900 (has links)
Since 1994, drastic changes occurred in the education system in South Africa, which had a direct impact on the level of job satisfaction that teachers experienced. Although this policy addressed the inequalities of the past, certain organisational factors influencing the morale of teachers were not recognised herein. In this research study the researcher made use of a combination of qualitative and quantitative research methods, known as triangulation. Semi-structured interviews (qualitative) and questionnaires (quantitative) were used as data collection techniques to determine the nature, extent and possible solutions to the research problem. Factors affecting job satisfaction among educators were identified and examined. Recommendations were made regarding the role of the Department of Education, principals, colleagues and parents in teachers' job satisfaction. The main recommendation is that principals may maximise teachers’ job satisfaction through building relationships of trust, involvement in the decision-making process and by implementing support structures. / Educational Leadership and Management / M. Rol van skoolbestuur in die implementering van 'n effektiewe dissiplinebeleid op laerskoolvlak in die Suid-Kaap / The role of school management in the implementation of an effective discipline policy at primary schools in the Southern Cape

Groenewald, Sharlton Delmaine 11 September 2019 (has links)
Text in Afrikaans, with abstracts in Afrikaans, English and Xhosa / Dissipline in skole en leerders se uitslae het sedert 1994 baie verswak. / The systemic test results shows that since 1994, discipline in schools and amongst learners has drastically deteriorated. Assaults on educators on a daily basis reach the news, which leaves a bad image to the world on the state of education in South Africa. This study investigates the role that school management teams can play to put an effective discipline policy in place to improve the behaviour of learners. The study found that schools have acquired policies on school discipline that were developed by an external company. Educators, learners and parents were not involved in the development thereof and for this reason they do not take ownership of it. It has come to light that educators use different methods, sometimes even unethical and illegal, to discipline learners. They focus on discipline (punitive) instead of trying to correct the behaviour of the learner (remedial). The study gives recommendations on what school management teams can do with guidelines on how to develop an effective discipline policy. / Iziphumo zibonisa ukuba ukususela ngo-1994 ukuqeqeshwa ezikolweni kwaye abafundi baye bahlaselwa kakhulu. Van Wyk, André Daniël January 2011 (has links)
The image of a school is mechanism that defines a certain school amongst other schools in the vicinity, as well as the country. The image model developed in this study, can be used as a management tool through which the school can evaluate all the different facets contributing to the image of a school, and identify positive and negative factors requiring action plans for maintenance or development. Transvalia High School has been one of the top 100 schools in South-Africa since 2009. The evaluation done by Perry (2009) does, however, only focus on the academic side of the school and not on the other factors as defined by Howard (1998:15) that contributes to the image of a school. The question thus is how the image of Transvalia presents itself, and what could possibly be done to enhance it and strengthen its position between the top 100 schools in South-Africa. It was decided to research die possible factors as identified by the literature study, that supports the image of the school and the measure of their impact. Through prioritization of the factors, management actions were derived to enhance the image of the school. Research was done through a quantitative questionnaire with a sample size of 450 students, parents and teachers randomly selected from each class in the school. The design of the questionnaire stemmed from the literature study done. The results from the questionnaires were used to: • test the validity, reliability and comparative fit of the questionnaire; and • identify critical, development and maintenance areas of the image of the school. Only 345 valid questionnaires could be used in the study. Additional comments from the questionnaires were divided into positive and negative areas, with several main focus points. The qualitative data were then sorted into these focus areas and quantified. The results of the questionnaire as a measuring instrument showed beyond doubt, that the questionnaire was sufficiently valid and reliable to measure the image of a school. A structural equation model was developed through factor analysis and the statistical department of the North-West University to determine the exact influence of each of the pillars onto the image as well as onto each other. The following results were obtained: • Only 79% of the environment contributes to the image of the school where the environment consists of the parents, the Department of Education and the school governing body; • The school culture consists of the history of the school, the climate within the school, recognition, appearance, discipline, safety and religion. Only 82% of the school culture contributes to the image. • Approximately 85% of Product Catalogue supports the image. The Product Catalogue is supported by academics, sport, leadership and tertiary alignment. • Lastly, the image is supported by 84% of delivery mechanisms that consists of the principal, teachers, infrastructure and technology of the school. From the study and the conclusions drawn, the following recommendations were made: • Parent involvement in supporting their children with homework and with sport and fundraising activities, is insufficient and requires development; • The selection of teachers, especially in the lower grades, has to have stricter requirements in line with subject needs; • Safety at school and in particular evacuation plans, requires attention and drills; • Discipline application between the teacher core has to be standardized and focused on reducing smoking students, intensified; • The perception of an imbalance between sport and academics requires proper information distribution; • Formal leadership courses have to be introduced in to the product catalogue; • Performance appraisal for teachers through a Balanced Scorecard and individual development plans have to be introduced; and • A visible marketing plan utilising the various media available have to be developed. / Thesis (MBA)--North-West University, Potchefstroom Campus, 2011.
