The aims of this study are to establish: • what work satisfaction entails • which factors influence the work satisfaction of the principal according to the available literature • which factors in teaching practice influences the work satisfaction of the principal.
To achieve these goals both an empirical and a survey of the
literature was conducted. The study of the literature was
undertaken from primary and secondary sources. After the
characteristics and factors of work satisfaction have been
established and discussed, a questionnaire was drafted.
From the literature the following factors, the need of acknowledgement,
the need to excel, relationships within the
school, physical circumstances at work, and the status of
the principal were identified as important.
A systematic sample was used in which principals of primary
schools in the Northern Cape were involved. The information
gathered was processed with the aid of a computer. After
processing, the data was interpreted and findings were
established. According to the findings recommendations were
made.
The empirical investigation indicated that principals have
reasonable work satisfaction but that there still are
certain factors that should be addressed. Some of these
factors are a healthy relationship with pupils, colleagues
and subordinates and the line of communication between the
school and Education Department.
Certain recommendations are made on the basis of the
empirical investigation. The most important recommendations
are that the line of communication between the school and
Education Department should be improved, and that
achievements of the principal in his working environment

A country’s education system is a vital component of the country’s success. Without an excellent education system, our social, economic and financial positioning becomes threatened. At the heart of our education system lie our educators. Good educators are the key to an excellent education system. The loss of educators to the education system is significantly more than the current influx of qualified educators into schools. A great concern is why the South African education system is losing such large quantities of qualified and experienced educators. The literature review of this study focused on the factors contributing to job (dis)satisfaction and how it impacts on educators. Various sources were used to complete the literature study.
The empirical study was done by means of quantitative research by distributing questionnaires to participating schools in the Vaal Triangle District. The educators at each of these schools were asked to complete a questionnaire that focussed on the issues that may contribute to job (dis)satisfaction and were divided into different sub-sections. The results were analysed and interpreted and certain recommendations were made in terms of the direct results and conclusions raised by the empirical study.
The primary objective of this study was to determine the level of job satisfaction among some educators in the Vaal Triangle schools. The researcher looked at various trends in the education system and collected data relating to the determinants of job (dis)satisfaction in the school environment.
The study showed that educators within the study population were not satisfied with their working conditions and should these issues be addressed by Department of Education, it could lead to fewer educators leaving the education system to seek work elsewhere. / MBA, North-West University, Potchefstroom Campus, 2014

The purpose of this study is to determine the factors that influence the work
satisfaction of inspectors of education in the Northern Cape. This aim is
achieved by firstly conducting a literature study on the nature of work
satisfaction and factors responsible for inspector work satisfaction and/or
work dissatisfaction. Secondly an empirical investigation is conducted on the
perceptions of inspectors about factors influencing their work satisfaction.
Finally, recommendations are made through which inspectors of education
can achieve optimal work satisfaction for themselves.
Findings from the literature study indicate that work context and work contents
factors influence inspector work satisfaction. Work context factors mainly
concern supervision and working conditions. Working conditions include
aspects such as physical working conditions, leadership, interpersonal
relationships, policy, participation in decision-making, salary, work safety,
work security and the organizational climate. Work context factors relate to
inspectors' needs for psychological growth and self-fulfilment viz., the needs
for responsibility, recognition, promotion, the work itself and professional
development.
Findings from the empirical investigation indicate that the respondents are
less satisfied in their jobs than is generally reported. Inspectors regard the
satisfaction of work context factors as very important and are partly
contended that these needs are satisfied. However there are numerous work
context factors from which they derive relatively little work satisfaction, inter
alia, working conditions with regard to some supervisory activities,
participation in decision-making and strategic planning in the department of
education, work security and work safety. The factors within the work
context are experienced as mostly satisfying.
The recommendations of this study emphasise the necessity of an effective
line of communication between the Education Department and the regional
office, and the Education Department should launch a penetrating
investigation into the filling of vacancies at the level of inspectors. With the
aim on participatory management as many as possible role-players should be
involved at provincial level. With the aim of professional development of both
newly appointed inspectors of education and more experienced inspectors of
education a professional inclusion program must be developed regarding

Text in Afrikaans / Sedert 1994 het drastiese veranderinge in die Suid-Afrikaanse onderwysstelsel plaasgevind, wat ’n direkte invloed het op die vlak van werkstevredenheid wat opvoeders ervaar. Alhoewel die ongelykhede van die verlede in hierdie beleid ondersoek is, word sekere organisatoriese faktore wat die moraal van opvoeders beïnvloed egter nie hierin erken nie.
In hierdie navorsingstudie maak die navorser gebruik van die kombinasie van kwalitatiewe en kwantitatiewe navorsingsmetodes wat as triangulasie bekend staan. Semigestruktureerde onderhoude (kwalitatief) en vraelyste (kwantitatief) is as data-insamelingstegnieke gebruik om vas te stel wat die aard, omvang en moontlike oplossings vir die navorsingsprobleem is. Faktore wat werksbevrediging by opvoeders beïnvloed, is geïdentifiseer en ondersoek. Aanbevelings is gemaak rakende die rol van die Onderwysdepartement, prinsipaal, kollegas en ouers in opvoeders se werksbevrediging. Die vernaamste hiervan is dat prinsipale werkstevredenheid by opvoeders kan verhoog deur die bou van verhoudings van vertroue, betrokkenheid in die besluitnemingsproses en deur ondersteuningstrukture vir opvoeders in plek te stel. / Since 1994, drastic changes occurred in the education system in South Africa, which had a direct impact on the level of job satisfaction that teachers experienced. Although this policy addressed the inequalities of the past, certain organisational factors influencing the morale of teachers were not recognised herein.
In this research study the researcher made use of a combination of qualitative and quantitative research methods, known as triangulation. Semi-structured interviews (qualitative) and questionnaires (quantitative) were used as data collection techniques to determine the nature, extent and possible solutions to the research problem. Factors affecting job satisfaction among educators were identified and examined. Recommendations were made regarding the role of the Department of Education, principals, colleagues and parents in teachers' job satisfaction. The main recommendation is that principals may maximise teachers’ job satisfaction through building relationships of trust, involvement in the decision-making process and by implementing support structures. / Educational Leadership and Management / M.
