Exploring communication patterns within and across a school and associated agencies to increase the effectiveness of service to at-risk individuals

Scott, Donald January 2005 (has links)
The significant standpoint in this study was that schools’ key role was to educate and yet this process would be severely impeded when a student receiving the education was at-risk. Agencies external to the school provide support in various forms to these individuals with the view of decreasing their at-risk status, thus providing an environment conducive to learning. Communication was posited to be a fundamental process essential to the provision of support and education to these at-risk individuals. The conceptual framework in this study acknowledged the complexity of school and organisational environments and was founded upon four key theoretical perspectives; organisational communication theory; a psychological orientation provided by Maslow’s hierarchy of needs; a social reconstructionist perspective; and constructs underpinning at-risk status causal factors. This research study sought to identify communication patterns existing within a selected school, and between the school (in this case) and associated agencies that were supporting the at-risk individuals. The results of this study, derived from in-depth interviews and questionnaires with agency personnel and school staff, demonstrated that although formal patterns of communication did exist they were inefficient and cumbersome. Formal patterns of communication were subsidiary to informal networks between colleagues. In this study, the school was frequently excluded from informal and formal agency communication patterns. Intra-agency and intra-school communication patterns were characterised by a top-down orientation with administrators tending to control the flow of information. A major finding was that there were considerable barriers to developing more effective communication patterns. / The greatest impediment to communication was case workers’ fear of breaching the Commonwealth Privacy Act 1988, even when dealing with such serious issues as children’s safety. Other less serious, but still substantial barriers, included agency territorialism, poor marketing of services, and individuals’ biases against particular support agencies. A surprising finding was that case workers’ and educators’ conceptualisations of the causal factors which contribute to an at-risk status were well aligned. The family factors, which included drug addicted, alcoholic, violent, criminal, disinterested and/or neglectful parents, problematic siblings, and coming from an English-as-a-second-language background were deemed to have the most significant influence towards creating an at-risk status. School-based factors such as stressed, intolerant, inexperienced, and/or non-supportive teachers, an inadequate and/or violent school environment, and a lack of individualised support were deemed to have the least impact on developing an at-risk status. As a result of this research a model has been proposed which outlines the creation of a State Support Brokerage Authority whose mandate would be to centralise, coordinate, and ensure quality of service to at-risk individuals across the state. This body would utilise a technological solution to enhance and coordinate the communication patterns between all potential stakeholders to facilitate appropriate and timely interventions.

Toward a Critique of the Message Construct in Communication

Wilson, John K. (John Kenneth) 08 1900 (has links)
The idea of an inherent structure of meaning in human communication is identified as the message construct. Traces of the construct in textbook models of the basic communication process and in popular magazine images of communication are examined. The argument is raised that objectifying the message has resulted in a paradigm which focuses disproportionately on explicit, representational, and instrumental aspects of communication. An alternative conception is proposed which would take into account implicit, constitutive, and generative aspects.

The dissertation problematizes the communication process in the field of graffiti manifestations. This work sets forth a collection of images which had been published as the work process register of the graffiti artist Bruno Novelli. It also aims to find what that, in these images, among us, can stimulate human interaction and aesthetic experience. Therefore, the research embodies and applies studies on the insertion of aesthetic phenomena in the communication studies territory. The collector’s role and the appropriation of processes’ documents work as a guide and gave methodological consistence, contributing for the reflections on graffiti-images. At last, the graffiti process is recognized as markedly aesthetics in its multiple possibilities in producing the graffiti-presence on several materialities.

SATS + e2 = SANT?

Sehlström, Maria January 2008 (has links)

Aim: The aim of this essay is to study the communication strategy that the company SATS developed before taking over the company e2. The following questions are to be answered: - what was the planned communication strategy before taking over the company e2? - did SATS follow their original plan when implementing this strategy? – Which strengths and weaknesses of the communication strategy can be identified based on opinions of the employees?

Material/Method: Together with literature and document studies, a qualitative method has been used and seven personal interviews have been conducted. One informant was selected due to professional position; the other six respondents were former employees of the affected company e2.

Main results: The main results from the study show that the company SATS did in fact follow their plan very accurately with only some minor changes such as an earlier started education program and exclusion of an initially planned evaluation activity. Communication about the takeover of e2 to employees was quick and clear. This can be seen as strength of the strategy. The employees were positive to all of the activities that involved personal contact and face to face meetings. However the employees were negative to the limited possibilities for contribution of opinions and also to the lack of a thorough evaluation of the communication activities.

Appelberg, Ia January 2010 (has links)
Abstract Title: Equalis quality assures the communication. A qualitative study of superiors and co-workers view on the internal communication. Number of pages: 39 (42 including enclosures) Author: Ia Appelberg Tutor: Else Nygren Course: Media and Communication Studies C Period: Autumn term 2010 University: Division of Media and Communication, Department of Information Science, Uppsala University Purpose: Superiors and co-workers view on the internal communication is studied with the purpose to identify whether their opinions correspond with one another, and what differences and similarities there might be. Method: This study is based on qualitative interviews with superiors and co-workers, and complements with the use of observations. Main results: The results indicate that superiors and co-workers agree on several aspects of the communication, such as the fact that the organizational communication is disorderly and lack clear rules and guidelines. Superiors believe that the organization has a corresponding view on the internal communication, while co-workers are convinced this is not the case. This despite the fact that the results in the end show that both groups overall have very similar opinions on several of the elements in question. Another mutual opinion is that both groups wish to receive more information about current events and such. Communication strategies do hardly exist in the organization and there are no existing communication plans at all. When it comes to decision-making, the organization does not use any hierarchy or structure for the prosecution nor any processes for decision-making. On the other hand, co-workers believe that they are a part of the decision-making and that they always are encouraged to express their opinions, something superiors maintain is very important for the organization. Keywords: Communication, organizational communication, communication processes, leadership.

Immigrant media and communication processes for social change in Korea : a case study of Migrants Workers Television

Chae, Young-gil 20 January 2011 (has links)
In the context of critical development communication, the processes are discussed centering two key constructs including 'power' and 'dialogic praxis' in the analytical frame for this research. In addition, theories and practices of immigrant media and social movements provide constructive perspectives discussing characteristics forms of collective actions for immigrant communities (local-global, transnational, and heterogeneous; roles of immigrant media (movement resource and cultural resource) in a host society. However, we are less informed about communication processes for migrant agents to construct migrant social movement. Much less is discussed about communication processes and their implications of media communications of immigrant media. Thus, to bridge the theoretical and practical gaps, this dissertation research attempt to contextualize communication processes of an immigrant media, MWTV, engaged in the migrant social movement in order to explore how relatively powerless migrant agents develop alternative forms and ways of praxis for social change through their media communications. Throughout two field research, this particular research could identify a 'asymmetric power structure' formed through the relations between diverse social agencies related to the processes for social changes for the immigrant communities in Korea, which induce 'the mediated praxis' shaping 'asymmetric solidarity,' 'objectification of the migrant agents,' and 'assimilation of movement culture.' Then, the immigrant media, MWTV have been developed to 'remediate' existing dominant forms and ways of social changes constitutive of 'dialogic praxis' of the foreign agents. Thus, media communication of immigrant media is viewed as conscious collective actions to 'remediate mediated praxis' for social and cultural change in a host society rather than mere symbolic resources for social or cultural reorientation. It means that the flexible, collaborator, and reflective communication structure of MWTV are deliberately reconstructed not as 'conditions' but as 'consequences' of critical reflection on mediated praxis. / text

Santana, Ricardo Antonio Ferreira 10 July 2007 (has links)
This dissertation signs the possibility of investigating - with the effect of the technological, economic and cultural changes in the world and in mass communication, in particular on radio broadcasting - how to use radios potentiality for the diffusion of popular culture movements, in special the tradition of cururu, a kind of country music free style battle from São Paulos countryside. It also search to understand how these changes influenced cururu itself, as it has been modifying its characteristics to resist in face of the development of the mass medias. This study shows the importance of the preservation of the local culture by the radio stations of Piracicaba city, located in the interior of São Paulo State. In its final consideration, the study presents data indicating where the local radio stations and cururueiros (a person who performs the cururu) stands about this matter. It also points out ways mutual cooperation and how the radios stations can play a leading role in the spread of this popular culture.

No. of bitstreams: 1 Juliana Caetano Nêto.pdf: 11772072 bytes, checksum: 1e7c4d737098470e5ba7ea4945cdcd85 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2017-06-29 / Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior - CAPES / In the context of the culture of participation, the number of collective actions is growing every day. The thesis discusses the networked communication processes and the power that emerges in collective actions for social transformation. Our hypothesis is that the meta-plataforms that manage the crowdactions, so called because they are known from the use of the prefix crowd, are systems that favor community empowerment, act on the affective engagement of multiple agents and enable the creative emergence of responses to social problems. The methodology adopted is based on the mapping of poetic maps in cyberspace (Lúcia Leão) and case studies of collaborative meta-plataforms that were developed following different types of management models (bottom-up, middle-out and top-down). The thesis articulates relations with Stuart Hall, Zygmunt Bauman and Michel Maffesoli, who contribute to the problematization about the idea of identity and affective associations in groups. The research is anchored in the perspective of the creation processes of Lúcia Leão and Steven Johnson. As a result, the thesis has shown that meta-platforms are examples of systems founded on the knowledge ecology paradigm. The processes that make up these systems operate through open source structures, whose customization allows for an amplification of the offer of solutions, and create concrete possibilities of social transformation. In addition, systems are examples of knowledge production in the contemporary world as they create spaces for dialogue and favor the articulation of different agents in problem mediation / No contexto da cultura da participação, o número de ações coletivas em rede cresce a cada dia.

A case study of the nurse practitioner consultation in primary care : communication processes and social interactions

Barratt, Julian January 2016 (has links)
Background: Nurse practitioners are increasingly conducting consultations with patients on the same basis as medical doctors. However little is known about communication within nurse practitioner consultations. Research on communication in nurse practitioner consultations has identified nurse practitioners communicate with patients in a hybrid style, combining biomedical information with the discussion of subjective information from everyday life. Research has not fully explained why this hybrid style occurs in nurse practitioner consultations, nor determined its links to consultation duration, patient expectations, satisfaction, and enablement. This study was developed to address these gaps in research of communication in nurse practitioner consultations. Aim: This study aims to advance understanding of the discrete nature of the communication processes and social interactions occurring in the nurse practitioner consultation, including explicating the reasons for the occurrence of the particular communication processes and interaction styles observed in those consultations. Methods: The study was conducted in a nurse-led primary care clinic providing general practice care. Within a case study research approach mixed methods were utilised, combining structured analysis of video recorded observations of nurse practitioner consultations, questionnaire-based measures of patient expectations, satisfaction, and enablement, and interviews with some of the participants of the consultations. The sample for video recording comprised three nurse practitioners employed at the clinic, and 30 patients registered at the clinic. Questionnaire responses were provided by 71 patients, including 26 whose consultations had been video recorded. All three nurse practitioners participated in post-consultation individual interviews, and 11 patient / carers participated in post-consultation individual interviews. The video recorded consultations were analysed with the Roter Interaction Analysis System (RIAS), a method of quantified interactions frequency analysis. The questionnaire responses were analysed with descriptive statistics. Transcripts of the interviews were analysed using computerised qualitative data analysis with NVivo. Findings: A significant majority of observed social interaction in the consultations used patient-centred communication styles (p=0.005), with neither nurse practitioners nor patients or carers being significantly more verbally dominant. Nurse ii practitioners guided the sequence of consultation interaction phases, but patients and carers participated through asking questions and involvement in negotiations for care planning. Patient / carers were highly satisfied with their consultations, and significantly higher general satisfaction was noted when participants expected the nurse practitioners to be able to diagnose their presenting problem (p=0.043). Patient / carers expressed significantly higher levels of enablement than have been seen in previous studies of enablement with other types of clinicians (p=0.003). The mean consultation time length of 10.97 minutes is comparable with studies of general practitioners. The participants’ perceptions of nurse practitioner consultation communication processes and social interactions were represented through six themes; Consulting style of nurse practitioners; Nurse practitioner – GP comparisons; Lifeworld content or lifeworld style issues; Nurse practitioner role ambiguity; Creating the impression of time; and Expectations for safety netting. Contribution to knowledge: This study reveals nurse practitioner consultations comprise collaborative openness to peoples’ agendas and questions, expressions of everyday lifeworld experiences, expanded impressions of time, clear explanations augmented by integrated clinical reasoning, and participatory negotiations. These communicative features arise from a combination of social, ideological, and epistemological factors, prompting nurse practitioners to privilege how they interact with patients and carers, and to adopt a hybrid patient-centred style combining the nursing ideology of holism and their knowledge of biomedicine. This form of communication has been characterised as a stylistic exemplar for good consultation communication practice, which potentially facilitates shared decision-making. This research has resulted in new knowledge of the communication processes and social interactions used in nurse practitioner consultations, which demonstrates the importance of clinicians giving precedence to how they communicate and interact with patients so as to optimise their therapeutic outcomes without compromising the duration of consultations.
