ETHNIC IDENTITY AND FUNDS OF KNOWLEDGE IN THE SCHOLARSHIP OF LATINA FACULTY

Mariela Agrawal Administration and Higher Education Southern Illinois University Carbondale, IL 62901 Abstract The purpose of this qualitative study was to explore the self-identity and funds of knowledge (fok) of eight Latina faculty in relation to their understanding and conceptualization of academic scholarship. Two broad questions guided this research. First, how do Latina faculty understand and conceptualize academic scholarship, and second, how do perceptions of identity and life experiences influence this conceptualization? The underrepresentation of Latinas in faculty positions and the devaluation of the social capital of Latino communities prompted me to explore the relationship between the participants' ethnic identity, life experiences/funds of knowledge, and scholarship. I collected the data for this study through two interviews with each participant, a focus group, and written narratives. These methods allowed the women in this study to reflect upon their experiences growing up, their obstacles and opportunities in their journeys in higher education, the people who supported and guided them through their academic career, and their experiences with racism and discrimination as people of color. The major findings in this study include the conceptualization of scholarship as an act of intellectual engagement with a purpose and the influence of ethnic identity in faculty's academic scholarship based on discipline. The major implications of this study include the need to distinguish immigrant from non-immigrant Latina faculty in educational research, the importance of support systems outside the family, the importance of role models, and the influence of fok in the success of Latina faculty. As this research is not exhaustive, I recommend extending it to include academic socialization of Latino doctoral students, ethnic identity in relation to classroom pedagogies, and epistemologies of faculty of color that influence academic scholarship.

Effects of the UO Diversity-Building Scholarship on student retention, graduation, and graduation debt

Search the library catalog for the location and call number. / This dissertation examines the effects of the UO Diversity-Building Scholarship (DBS) on the student outcomes of retention, graduation, and debt load upon graduation. Student outcomes were interpreted in the context of three research questions focusing on: (a) how DBS recipients compared with other funding groups; (b) how student outcomes differed by ethnoracial group; and (c) how outcomes differed by students' level of financial need. DBS recipients were compared with Staton and Dean's scholarship recipients and unfunded students. Study predictors were funding status, ethnoracial background, and financial need. Variables controlled for in study models were gender, parents' educational background, and standardized test scores. The effects of the DBS were analyzed using both descriptive and inferential (logistic and linear regression) analyses. Regression analyses yielded mixed results with regards to differential outcomes by funding group, ethnoracial background, and financial need. After discussing results in detail, I offer several policy and research recommendations in reaction to negative or unfavorable outcomes among DBS recipients. These recommendations focus on increased data gathering for UO scholarship recipients and formal evaluations of the impact of student support efforts directed at Diversity-Building scholars in particular and scholarship recipients in general. / Adviser: Joe Stevens

Opening Up Scholarship in the Humanities: Digital Publishing, Knowledge Translation, and Public Engagement considers the concept of humanistic, open, social scholarship and argues for its value in the contemporary academy as both a set of socially oriented activities and an organizing framework for such activities. This endeavour spans the interrelated areas of knowledge creation, public engagement, and open access, and demonstrates the importance of considering this triad as critical for the pursuit of academic work moving forward—especially in the humanities. Under the umbrella of open social scholarship, I consider open access as a baseline for public engagement and argue for the vitalness of this sort of work. Moreover, I suggest that there is a strong connection between digital scholarship and social knowledge creation. I explore the knowledge translation lessons that other fields might have for the humanities and include a journalist–humanist case study to this end. I also argue for the value of producing research output in many different forms and formats. Finally, I propose that there are benefits to explicitly popularizing the humanities. In sum, this dissertation speculates on past, current, and future scholarly communication activities, and proposes that such activities might be opened up for wider engagement and, thus, social benefit. / Graduate

A retention analysis of United States Naval Academy immediate graduate education participants

This thesis studied the retention of United States Naval Academy Voluntary Graduate Education Program (VGEP) and Scholarship participants in graduating classes of 1983-1998. The comparison group of nonparticipants consisted of USNA graduating classes 1983-1998 with an Academic Quality Point Rating (AQPR) comparable to the early graduate education students. AQPR was used in order to make the academic backgrounds similar for the participants and non-participants. The retention behavior of program participants and nonparticipants was compared to determine if participation in early graduate education affected retention. The models analyzed retention to each year of service between six and twelve years. In the retention models for unrestricted line officers, both VGEP and Scholarship had a small positive effect on retention to 7 YCS. Although the adjusted differences in retention are not large in magnitude, the results dispel the notion that early graduate education programs are used as vehicles by junior officers to facilitate transition to the civilian labor market following expiration of their initial service obligation. No changes to the service obligations for these programs were recommended.

It is the purpose of this study to show this contribution of scholarship; and the writer has relied heavily upon the publications made by T. R. Lounsbury, Caroline Spurgeon, and F. N. Robinson, each of whom has brought together the results of scholarship up to his own time and without whose works this writer's task would have been impossible.

The Effect of Scholarship Support, Gender, and Sport Type on Retention of Collegiate Student-Athletes

The purpose of this investigation was to determine what factors contribute to student-athlete retention, specifically looking at scholarship support, gender, and sport type (individual or team sport). Eight Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) schools provided data on all student-athletes participating from the 200 1-02 through the 2004-05 academic years. The investigator collected data on site at each institution (University of Delaware, Drexel University, Georgia State University, James Madison University, University of North Carolina-Wilmington, Old Dominion University, Virginia Commonwealth University, and the College of William and Mary) and obtained on each student-athlete including year, sport, gender, amount of scholarship support (both athletic and other), total cost of tuition, and retention status.Using analysis of variance (ANOVA), discriminant function analysis, and binary logistic regression, the data were analyzed in regard what type of relationship the independent variables (scholarship support as a percentage of tuition, gender and sport type) have with the dependent variable, retention. Of the nearly 13,000 observations, 12,027 were retained (92.7%) and 953 were not retained (7.3%). Analyses revealed that scholarship support alone was not significantly related to retention, but that gender and sport type were both significant predictors of retention, with women and individual sport athletes being retained at a higher rate than their male and team sport counterparts. Additionally, the combination of scholarship support, gender and sport type resulted in a predictive model of student-athlete retention.Of the 953 non-retained observations, 609 were male and 344 were female, and 338 competed in an individual sport while 61 5 were team sport athletes. Chi-Square Goodness of Fit tests revealed that there were more males and fewer females who were not retained than would be expected, and that there were more team sport athletes and fewer individual sport athletes not retained than would be expected (Chi-square = 5 1.058, df = 1). The findings suggest that further research be conducted on student-athletes as an individual population in regard to retention.

The thesis focuses on construction of specific "national" narration of history of Charles University in so called "short" twentieth century (1918-1998). It works with presumption that popular representations of history of Charles University are heavily influenced by Czech national narration of nations' history which roots can be traced as far as to the first half of the nineteenth century. Attention is paid to examination of various representations of the past - written, verbal, visual as well as to changes that the representations of the past underwent during the twentieth century in which several radically different political regimes ruled the Czech lands. While examining various simplifications and stereotypes in narration of the university history as well as personal development of individual historians and their influence on the image of university past, the work tries to show unifying aspects of the narratives of history of Charles University in the period in question.

Centro Universitário de Caratinga / lt;p align="justify"gt; O perfil dos catadores de materiais recicláveis de uma associação, na cidade de Governador Valadares, Minas Gerais, Brasil, é apresentado neste trabalho. Não há registros sobre a realidade desses trabalhadores e mediante as dificuldades encontradas para sobrevivência desse grupo, foram descritas as condições de trabalho e de vida visando subsidiar propostas para melhoria dessas condições de vida, desse grupo social. Os catadores de materiais recicláveis são expostos, diariamente, a condições insalubres de trabalho que podem afetar sua saúde em função do tempo de exposição e do aumento de idade cronológica. Foram entrevistados 61,2% dos catadores associados na própria sede da associação, sendo abordados sobre questões referentes às condições de trabalho, moradia, lazer, renda, acesso a serviços de saúde, presença ou ausência de acidentes de trabalho e grau de satisfação pessoal. Também foram entrevistados os coordenadores da associação com abordagens sobre o histórico da associação, histórico pessoal dos catadores, a estrutura física da associação e a rotina de trabalho. Foram realizadas anotações em diário de campo, e durante as visitas, foram analisados os documentos e registros da associação desde o início das atividades. A atividade econômica da associação é fonte de renda para 67 catadores e garante a sobrevivência de 181 pessoas, catadores e seus dependentes. As variáveis dependentes (escolaridade, moradia, acidentes de trabalho e grau de satisfação pessoal) foram correlacionadas com a variável independente idade do trabalhador. A idade não tem nenhuma associação com a ocorrência de acidentes de trabalho e tipo de moradia. O nível de escolaridade dos trabalhadores é baixo, a maioria, 53,6% dos associados apresentam escolaridade igual ou inferior a três anos de estudo e teve associação negativa com a idade. Os catadores mais jovens apresentaram menor grau de satisfação com a vida, pois almejam maiores oportunidades de ascensão social. A desigualdade sócio-econômica ocasiona baixa auto-estima, desesperança e descrédito em alcançar melhores condições de vida. Age isn’t associated to ocurrence of work accidents and kind of housing . Scholarship workers level is low most of them , 53,6% of the associates present scholarship iqual or under three school years and it was negatively associated to age . Younger collectors present lower life satisfaction grade for aiming at bigger oportunities of social ascension.
