A case study of a small Kansas public charter school to identify school-level factors perceived to have contributed to student success

Kaiser, Carlene P. January 1900 (has links)
Doctor of Education / Department of Educational Leadership / Teresa Miller / The purpose of this research proposal was to investigate school-level factors identified by Marzano (2003) perceived to have contributed positively to student achievement in one charter school. The researcher noted the following issues related to charter schools and student achievement: The data on student achievement were mixed; limited research existed on student achievement using the school -level factors identified by Marzano (2003); limited case studies existed comparing school-level factors and student achievement for charter schools. Using the case study format, the researcher investigated perceptions regarding school-level factors perceived to have increased student achievement in one charter school in Kansas over a five-year period from 2005-2008. The case study was accomplished through the collection, analysis, and interpretation of data from multiple sources to include researcher observations, key informant interviews, and analysis of archival documents. After conducting the research, it was determined that while there wasn’t a deliberate attempt to use the factors by Robert Marzano (2003), the school-level factors were used by Dartmouth Charter School did impact student achievement as evidenced by stakeholder interview, Kansas Reading Assessments, and archival data sources. A case study confirmed the presence of several aspects of the school-level factors of a guaranteed/viable curriculum, challenging goals and effective feedback, parental and community involvement, a safe and orderly environment, and collegiality and professionalism, which were perceived by stakeholders as contributing to increased student achievement over the five-year period of operation.

Gastos com educação e desempenho escolar: uma análise no nível da escola / Expenditures on education and school performance: an analysis at the school level

Galvão, Fernando Vizotto 06 October 2016 (has links)
This dissertation aims to explore the relationship between the money spent on education and school performance, based on the information about spending at the school-level. The debate on the relationship between expense and performance has been mostly based on estimates using the aggregated data of municipal spending on education. Thus, as little is known about what is actually done with the resources allocated to schools, researches on this subject are restricted to indicating the existence or the lack of a relationship between aggregate spending and performance. In this study, we show the relevance of the information on spending at the school level, according to categories of aggregate spending that point to certain functions or school activities. With this, we intend not only to understand if education expenses are or are not associated with performance, but also to observe how different types of costs associated with different school activities are related in different ways to the performance of students. Thus, based on literature review, we have proposed categories of personnel expenses for the municipal schools of São Bernardo do Campo, which are aligned to the activities developed by the schools. Categories of higher aggregation involve what we consider to be Expenses directly related to teaching and Expenses indirectly related to education. From the specific categories, which are based on information on spending per school, we explore the relationship between spending per student and their performance in the Mathematics exam in Prova Brasil 2013, using a regression analysis. The estimates have shown that the relationship between spending and performance is not homogeneous among the different categories of expenditure, and that specification of models improves as costs are disaggregated. Among the obtained results, we highlight the indication of a positive and significant relation between spending on Pedagogical coordination and performance on the mathematics exam.

O ensino profissional técnico de nível médio no Brasil e no Chile - Convergências e divergências na formação profissional e no trabalho / The professional and technical teaching of high school level in Brasil and Chile - Convergences and divergences in professional development and in labor

Almeida, Nelson Morato Pinto de 28 February 2011 (has links)
The aim of this work is to investigate the specific development required for technical school students applying for work in industrial maintenance in Brazil and Chile, identify its relationship with public educational policies and verify whether it provides the development of competencies and skills for professional performance in the industrial maintenance market. Based on the ideas of Druker, Senge, Enguita, Ferretti, Rifkin, Dowbor, Godim, Bridges, Saviani, Hargreaves, Valente, Castells, Singer, Harvey, among others, the theoretical basis of this research was established to support the analysis between the educational laws of each country, the field work with recruiters, job interviewers, and those who finish technical courses at high school level in both countries. Methodology development was based on qualitative research with emphasis on documental analysis using the official documents from Educational departments as data sources to build the steps of legislation-development goals, and on quantitative research that analyzed the field data collected with the labor recruiter to build the labor market goals. Coupled with these two goals, the field research also encompassed the students finishing technical courses at high school level. The answers gathered in this study indicate that governments are seeking to provide students development under the principles of competencies and skills in order to perform in the market of industrial maintenance labor. In the same way, students themselves claim such competencies and skills were achieved in the attended course, but the workforce recruiters doubt the applicants educational development meets the markets requirements. This incongruence in the answers shows there is a gap between educational development and the labor market, perhaps due to the delay in implementing educational actions to face this rapidly evolving market. Some important aspects raised from the conclusions: Brazil and Chile reveal different characteristics regarding the improvement of professional development oriented to industrial mechanics because, in Chile, a rigid, structured curricular frame was observed, whereas in Brazil there are indications of some flexibility and openness to allow access to those who did not go to Primary schools at the expected ages and went to adult education programs for their initial technical education. Such a fact is seen as a correction for a historic misconception of technical education, and a means to recover wasted time and try to achieve indicators that would bring the country to the same level as others.

Oliveira, Luciano Denardin de January 2009 (has links)
We describe the use of historical elements to facilitate the learning of Fluid Mechanics in High School. We have developed an instructional material founded on the basis of the theory of meaningful learning of Ausubel and Novak. Besides the historical topics, the text explores the quotidian of the student. As a complement, experimental activities and the use of videos, representing the physical phenomena presented in class, complemented the application of the proposal. Daily observation in classroom and analysis of the questionnaires answered by the students showed us that we succeeded in stimulating the students, who demonstrated much more enthusiasm and participation. It was developed, also, a guide with suggestions to teachers interested in utilizing the material.

The teaching of science and physics to young people in the socio-educational system suffers limitations ranging from the need to work in modules, to the inability to use resources and usual methods comonn in the formal education. In particular need to group disciplines in modules makes the subjects of Science and Physics not be seen in the last two modules of the midle school level, leaving the student far away from such contents when he enters high school. To complement the modular teaching corresponding to the modules of the final years of midle school, it was built a sequence Physics practices to presente to this public their first concepts and reflections on physics subjects. In the construction of the sequence were considered the particular constraints that the public is subjected, as the need to prepare them for physics in high school, as well as the inclusion of issues usually addressed in the context of their everyday experiences. Simple experiments with easy findind material on electrostatics, pressure, surface tension and heat were selectec, for wich a guide to the practices and revision questionaries were prepared. The purpose of the following practices was to stimulate their curiosity and arouse interest both to the study and to Physics in public with serious contents deficiencies and training gaps. The emphasis on xperimental activity, in addition to associate the physical science with its practical side, allows the youngsters to express their manual skills, contributing to its rapprochement with study, a crucial step towards his recovery to society. Through the educational product here proposed we expect to contribute to the construction of the first physical concepts in cognitive structure of these youngsters. The same way we intend to provide teachers who work in the socio-educational system with an educational resource that enable them to carry out their teaching practice in a more attractive, interesting and diverse way.

Física térmica : uma abordagem histórica e experimental

Michelena, Juleane Boeira January 2008 (has links)
It is frequent, in our high school teaching, to introduce Physics to the students in a fragmented and out-of-context manner, with no relation to the student's daily life and as a final and complete knowledge. We have developed an instruction material founded on the basis of the theories of significant learning, of David Ausubel, and of social interaction, of Lev Vygotsky, as an alternative proposal to this situation. The material is on Thermal Physics, and presents a historical and experimental approach to this area of Physics. The developed material has six sections, and in all of the sections a historical approach of the contents is done. For each topic some experimental activities are proposed, with low cost material, in an attempt to minimize the lack of laboratory facilities of most of our schools. Conceptual exercises are proposed at the end of each section. The material was developed in order to stimulate discussions among the students and with the teacher, aiming the social interaction and the share of experiences in the construction of knowledge. This project was applied from March to August 2008, in a public school of Porto Alegre.

Student And School Characteristics Related To Elementary Students

Hacieminoglu, Esme 01 June 2010 (has links) (PDF)
The purposes of this study were to explain the development and validation of a new instrument for assessing elementary students&rsquo / views of the Nature of Science (NOS) and to investigate student and school level factors that help to explain the difference in NOS views. The sample included 3,062 elementary students elementary schools located in &Ccedil / ankaya. Different from these students, 782 elementary students were the sample for the first focus of this study. The Nature of Science Instrument, Learning Approach Questionnaire and Achievement Motivation Questionnaire were administered to the students. Hierarchical Linear Modeling (HLM) was selected as a modeling technique because of the nested structure of the data sets. This study provides an instrument for measuring elementary student views of the NOS regarding four dimensions. In this study, students had different views regarding each dimensions, therefore, many variables have been shown to relate to different dimensions of NOS. This study has established the importance of student socio-economic background with varying learning approaches, self-efficacy, and motivational goals in forming their NOS views. Findings revealed that quality of the physical infrastructure of schools and quality of educational resources in school, parent educational levels, student achievement, self efficacy, experience with meaningful learning, and learning goal orientation are positively related to student NOS views in many different dimensions. Additionally, performance goal orientation and rote learning approaches have negative relationship with different dimensions of student NOS views.

A Cross-cultural Comparison Of The Effect Of Human And Physical Resources On Students

Celebi, Ozgur 01 September 2010 (has links) (PDF)
This study investigates the students&rsquo / characteristics and school characteristics and their influences on scientific literacy skills of 15-year-old students across Turkey, Canada, and Sweden, through the use of data from Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development&rsquo / s (OECD&rsquo / s) Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) 2006. The purpose of this study is to gain a more complete understanding of the effect of human and physical resource allocations and their interaction on students&rsquo / scientific literacy skills using Hierarchical Linear Modeling (HLM) techniques. By PISA 2006 results, in terms of scientific literacy, Canada is a high performing country whereas Turkey is far below the average and Sweden has a rank in the average. For modeling scientific literacy, student-level characteristics determined by student questionnaire, and school-level characteristics determined by school questionnaire were used. Results of the present study indicated that there were significant between-school differences in scientific literacy skills of students for all three countries. Turkey had the highest between-school variance and it was more than half of the total variance whereas in Canada and Sweden they were far lower. School type and size were common school factors affecting students&rsquo / scientific literacy skills in Canada and Sweden / however, in Turkey school admittance policies, educational resources, science promotional activities, and teacher qualities were school characteristics which have impact on scientific literacy. Enjoyment of learning science, self-efficacy in science, general value given to science, awareness of environmental issues, responsibility for sustainable development, and confidence in use of information technologies were common student factors affecting development of scientific literacy skills in the three countries. Finally, in all three countries cross-level interactions of student and school characteristics for developing scientific literacy skills were observed.

Leblond, Anne 01 1900 (has links)
Researchers have recently been interested in the evolution of student motivation in mathematics during the high school years. Many findings have underscored gender differences in student motivation. Research has yet to consider motivational differences according to skill level in mathematics during the final years of high school. Because performance-based streaming in mathematics is a conventional educational practice in its system, the Canadian province of Quebec offers an excellent opportunity to study such student differences over time, according to gender. Thus, the main objective of this study is to document the evolution of student motivation in high school mathematics while attending to mathematics skill level and gender. Based on existing performance-based educational policy, participants (1864 girls and 1576 boys) were already grouped in two skill levels of mathematics courses: advanced and basic. They were enrolled in one of 30 French-language public high schools in the Montreal area. Between ninth and eleventh grade (mean ages 14.60 and 17.84, respectively), students completed a self-report questionnaire at five different time points. The questionnaire addressed the following five motivational variables at all five time points: competence beliefs, performance anxiety, perception of mathematics utility, interest for mathematics, and accomplishment goals (mastery-based, performance-based, and avoidance-based approach goals). Grade 11 represents the final year of high school in Quebec. Hierarchical linear modeling analyses were employed to achieve the objective of this study. The results indicate that student motivation generally decreased by the end of high school. However, this decrement was particularly remarkable for students at the advanced mathematics skill level. More specifically, students in the advanced level showed a steeper decline in self-perceived competence, expressed interest, and perceptions of usefulness of mathematics at the end of high school. Their performance anxiety also increased during the same developmental period. Although the results revealed decrements in mastery-based approach goals for all students, those at the basic skill classification maintained generally lower levels of such goal-directed behaviors at the end of high school. Conversely, only students at the advanced skill level reported decreased performance-based approach goals. They also showed important increases in avoidance-based goals. Though students registered in the basic mathematics skill stream consistently reported lower motivation scores, their counterparts at advanced skill levels reported comparatively more important motivational decrements by the end of high school. Therefore, the results of this study suggest that decreases in mathematics motivation by the end of high school particularly affect students at more advanced mathematics levels. As for gender, motivational differences between girls and boys were not often found significant. This finding is above and beyond the fact that girls consistently maintained lower motivation scores than boys registered at the same mathematics skill level. This finding highlights the importance of considering possible gender differences when facing the challenges of the high school math curriculum, regardless of skill level. The most important findings suggest that pedagogical interventions be prospectively adjusted in tenth grade in order to circumvent decreases in student motivation at advanced levels by the end of high school.
