Helicobacter pylori and its relationship with variations of gut microbiota in asymptomatic children between 6 and 12 years

Objective: To determine the variations in the composition of the intestinal microbiota in asymptomatic children infected with Helicobacter pylori in comparison with children without the infection. Results: Children infected with H. pylori doubled their probability of presenting 3 of 9 genera of bacteria from the gut microbiota, including: Proteobacteria (p = 0.008), Clostridium (p = 0.040), Firmicutes (p = 0.001) and Prevotella (p = 0.006) in comparison to patients without the infection. We performed a nutritional assessment and found that growth stunting was statistically significantly higher in patients infected with H. pylori (p = 0.046). / Revisión por pares / Revisión por pares

The extent to which information skills have been integrated into primary curricula in British Columbia

This study addressed the question of whether or not information skills actually were being taught in context with curriculum units of study. The three questions it attempted to answer were: 1. To what extent have primary teachers and teacher-librarians integrated information skills into primary curriculum subjects in British Columbia? 2. Have teacher-librarian qualifications and/or hours of employment in a school library resource centre influenced the integration process? 3. Has the handbook. Primary Library Activities facilitated the integration of information skills into primary curricula? Data collection included both a written questionnaire and oral telephone interviews. The sample for the study was purchasers of Primary Library Activities. in the years 1984 and 1983. The responses to each question were tabulated and an analysis of variance was conducted to compare the variables in question two with other data. The researcher found that: - a majority of educators stated they were teaching information skills by integration. - there was no relationship between the courses a teacher-librarian had completed and/or the hours he/she was employed in a school library resource centre and integration. - a considerable difference was observable in the amount of flexible scheduling between schools located in rural areas and those located in cities. - Primary Library Activities, had been helpful in integrating information skills. A limitation in this study was the small sample. Britain’s future strength, the health of elementary school children, 1867-1907 : a study in social policy, legislative action and government growth

The major objective of this thesis is to throw new light on the problem of "how" and "why" the function of the State within society changed dramatically during the first few years of the twentieth century By concentrating on the Liberal Government's measures of 1906 to 1907 to improve the health of working-class children this thesis hopes to show that the role of men and their beliefs played a far more important part in the development of the "British Welfare State" than has hitherto been credited. By illustrating how the social, political, and economic condi tions of the period 1870 to 1900 affected the consciousness of individuals and groups, it attempts to explain why there was a delay between the time when the extent of poverty became intolerable and the time when measures were enacted to relieve the problem. Three major themes intertwine throughout this thesis. These are the cause of government growth; the changing status of working-class children; and measures to improve the health of the nation. Chapter One discusses the social, physical, and psychological factors which affected the health of children before 1880, and illustrates the high esteem in which working-class parents held their children. Chapter Two shows how middle class Britain attempted to deal with the problem of child health in the period before the end of the nineteenth century. Chapter Three attempts to explain "how" and "why" the physical condition of the British working class became a question of major political significance for the first time. Specifically it describes the nineteenth century origins of the "National Efficiency" movement, the part played by the movement in concentrating public attention on the physical condition of the working class, and discusses the blue-print for social action formulated by the Inter-departmental Committee on Physical Deterioration. The last chapter describes how the Liberal Government of Sir Henry Campbell-Bannerman began the enactment of this social blue-print. Their first step was an Act which allowed local education authorities to feed needy school children free of charge. This was soon followed by another Act which allowed local education authorities to require the medical examination of all children attending public elementary schools. A comparative study of the relationship between parenting styles and bmi scores of children in low and high socio economic areas

Magister Artium (Social Work) - MA(SW) / Globally childhood obesity is becoming an epidemic, which is resulting in a generation of children who will live a shorter life expectancy than their parents. Researchers claim that overweight and obesity in school going children is on the rise with very few publications that have examined its significance and prevalence in South Africa. Recent research indicates that parenting styles are a contributing factor towards children’s weight status and obesegenic behaviours (such as eating patterns). Recent studies have identified a gap in this area where more informed research needs to be conducted on this topic. The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between parenting styles and BMI scores of school children in low and high socio economic areas. A quantitative cross sectional study, with correlational, comparative research design was conducted. This study used a multi stage sampling procedure which included convenient sampling and cluster sampling to identify the areas as well as the schools relevant to the study. The sample size consisted of all the grade 2 learners in the 4 randomly selected schools (200 male and 166 female learners) with a primary care giver (366). The final sample consisted of 366 learners and 366 primary caregivers from the 4 different schools which provided a final sample of 732 participants. The parents completed the Parenting Style and Dimensions Questionnaire (PSDQ) and the BMI of the children was manually taken. Findings of the study show that authoritative parenting styles are higher in high socio economic areas but this style of parenting has a higher prevalence in both socio economic areas when compared to the other parenting style typologies. Furthermore the BMI scores in low socio economic areas were documented as being more in line with the WHO growth curves assigned to that age group as compared to the high socio economic areas that did not meet those growth curve markers. There was no clear correlation identified between the parenting style and increased BMI scores.
