Modeling Consumers' Choice Behavior: An Application in Banking

Babakus, Emin, Eroglu, Sevgin, Yavas, Ugur 01 October 2004 (has links)
The study proposes and tests a model of consumer bank choice behavior in a south eastern city in the USA, based on the economics of information theory. The model expands the domain of inquiry beyond the initial level attributes to the first-order latent construct and the second-order (composite) levels. Results suggest that consumer bank choice behavior can be represented as a global construct with three viable components (search, credence and experience) and provide implications for bank managers.

Digital källkritik och informationssökning i historieundervisningen / Digital source criticism and information search in history education

Kristensson, Ida, Walid Karim, Shahed January 2023 (has links)
In the past few years society has become more digitized. As a result of this the schools are using more digital tools in education and searching information online has become the norm. The purpose of this essay is to investigate what research has been made on how digital sources and information searches online are used in history education and how this affects the students. It will also investigate how teachers should approach information searches and digital sources in history education. The material that has been used in this essay has been found through the databases SwePub, Education Research Complete (ERC) and ERIC via EBSCO. All the material has been reviewed by the authors of this essay to make sure they were relevant to the questions asked. The results of the essay are that due to the digitization in society the Swedish school system should revise their school documents to have a more extended view on source criticism. The results are also that using information searches and digital sources can have a positive effect on the students but for this to happen the teacher has to support the students during their work. Further research can be conducted on what the teachers' opinions on digitization in history education is and a comparison between the older methods of source criticism and the newer, more digitized source criticism.

Search and seizure in education

Connelly, Mary Jane January 1982 (has links)
This legal research study identified Supreme Court cases relating to search and seizure generally, and Supreme Court, federal and state court cases relating specifically to search and seizure in education. The purpose of this study was to identify those concepts, doctrines and principles of law governing searches and seizures in order to inform administrators of their legal responsibilities. Concepts, doctrines and principles of law governing searches and seizures are summarized in the following statements: (1) Students have a right to privacy, but this right must be balanced against the school's interests and the rights of others. (2) Searches must be reasonably related to a legitimate school purpose. General, exploratory, blanket and indiscriminate searches will not be sustained by courts. (3) School officials have an affirmative obligation to maintain order and discipline for the health and safety of students. (4) Searches must be based on concrete, articulable facts. Mere suspicion is not acceptable to the courts. (5) Elementary and secondary school officials, acting in loco parentis, are generally held to the lesser standard of reasonable cause to believe. However, the more intrusive the search, the higher the standard to be applied. (6) Colleges and universities cannot condition attendance upon a waiver of a student's constitutional rights. (7) Police initiated searches are subject to the higher standard of probable cause. (8) In cases where exigent circumstances existed, such as the destruction of evidence or harm to another, administrative officials have an affirmative obligation to act immediately and they are not subject to the warIant requirement (9) Contraband seen in plain view is subject to seizure without a warrant. / Ed. Phenomenology of Inert Scalar and Supersymmetric Dark Matter

Lundström, Erik January 2010 (has links)
While the dark matter has so far only revealed itself through the gravitational influence it exerts on its surroundings, there are good reasons to believe it is made up by WIMPs – a hypothetical class of heavy elementary particles not encompassed by the Standard Model of particle physics. The Inert Doublet Model constitutes a simple extension of the Standard Model Higgs sector. The model provides a new set of scalar particles, denoted inert scalars because of their lack of direct coupling to matter, of which the lightest is a WIMP dark matter candidate. Another popular Standard Model extension is that of supersymmetry. In the most minimal scenario the particle content is roughly doubled, and the lightest of the new supersymmetric particles, which typically is a neutralino, is a WIMP dark matter candidate. In this thesis the phenomenology of inert scalar and supersymmetric dark matter is studied. Relic density calculations are performed, and experimental signatures in indirect detection experiments and accelerator searches are derived. The Inert Doublet Model shows promising prospects for indirect detection of dark matter annihilations into monochromatic photons. It is also constrained by the old LEP II accelerator data. Some phenomenological differences between the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model and a slight extension, the Beyond the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model, can be found. Also, supersymmetric dark matter models can be detected already within the early LHC accelerator data.

The IceCube Neutrino Observatory: search for extended sources of neutrinos and preliminary study of a communication protocol for its future upgrade

Pinat, Elisa 27 June 2017 (has links)
English Version: When humans started looking out at a starry night, astronomy was born. Photons emitted by stars travel up to sometimes billions of light years to reach our eyes, and by studying the properties of this photon flux we are able to infer properties of the star itself. Instead of photons, the IceCube Observatory, located at South Pole, aims at detecting neutrinos and hopes to shed some light on the still unsolved mystery of cosmic-ray acceleration and production mechanisms, and on the most energetic phenomena of the Universe. At the time of this writing, IceCube has proven the existence of an astrophysical neutrino flux with a significance exceeding seven sigmas. Nevertheless, the observed astrophysical neutrino flux shows no significant directional clustering nor a clear association with any known source class so far. Also the latest results given by IceCube’s point source analysis show no significant clustering as well. It is therefore important to widen the search to different source topologies to maximize the discovery potential. In the first part of this work we present an extended source analysis with seven years of IceCube data, adding three years of data to the previous published work and implementing a novel likelihood formulation. Since the extensions of any potential sources are not known a priori, five different extensions have been considered, from 1° to 5°. No significant clustering is observed in any of the maps. The ability of IceCube to establish neutrino astronomy by finding neutrino sources is limited by the number of cosmic neutrinos measured. Despite the aforementioned discovery of an astrophysical flux, detailed spectral studies and searches for specific source locations in this signal remain a challenge with the event sample sizes available from the IceCube instrument. Therefore, a considerable expansion of the current detector, IceCube Gen2, is promoted, which includes the instrumentation of a 10 km3 volume, able to deliver substantial increases in the astrophysical neutrino sample for all flavors. Not only the hardware will be upgraded, but many systems will undergo improvements, such as communications and timing infrastructures. A new communication system has been investigated and is presented in the second part of this document. Binary Phase Shift Keying (BPSK), the simplest digital modulation technique, has been studied as possible communication technique for IceCube Gen2.

Information Seeking Behavior of Crime Scene Investigators in the Turkish National Police

Demircioglu, Mehmet 05 1900 (has links)
This exploratory research is the first one among occupational information seeking behavior studies that focuses on information seeking behaviors of the crime scene investigators. The data used in this dissertation were gathered via a self-administrated survey instrument from 29 cities in Turkey. Findings obtained from the data analyses show that there is a strongly positive relationship between the experience of the crime scene investigators and the use of personal knowledge and experience as a primary information source (experience is operationalized with age, service years in policing, and service years in crime scene investigation units). The findings also suggest that increasing of the level of education is negatively related to relying on immediate colleagues as an information source among the crime scene investigators. These findings are consistent with related literature and theory. The data analysis shows that crime scene investigators work in cities with higher population rates have more complaint scores than those who work in cities with lower population rates across Turkey. The findings from the data analysis may suggest valuable implications to defeat the barriers between crime scene investigators and information sources. The researcher drew a proposed theoretical framework of an information behavior concept in the context of crime scene investigation that may help those who are interested in the phenomenon and its applications to other contexts.

Agency in the Spanish language classroom : Student and teacher choices, actions and reports when students search for information online as part of a theme

Källermark Haya, Lisa January 2015 (has links)
Students’ and teachers’ own choices and actions – their agency – are an integral part of language education, yet we know little about agency in specific classroom contexts. One such context is when students search for information online as part of their foreign language education. Therefore, the aim of this study is to explore the agency enacted through the choices and actions of six upper secondary Spanish students and their teacher. Their choices and actions take place while they are working with a task that asks the students to read authentic web sites with text originally written in Spanish for a native Spanish speaking audience. Using a sociocultural perspective on the process of language learning in this task, the research question is: Through what choices, actions and reports do the students and the teacher exercise and express their agency? The study was carried out in two student groups in their second year at upper secondary school. Primary data were collected during the first lesson of a theme and consist of multiple sources, including computer screen recordings, sound and video uptake along with prompted interviews performed with both students and teacher. The main findings suggest that student and teacher choices and actions did not cohere, due to different objects of their respective activity system. The data shows that when students search for information online as a part of their language studies, they: Act as producers at the same time as consumers Multitask Translanguage Focus on end product more than the learning process Divide their work between them rather than work collaboratively Finding “third spaces” – where students’ home practices are not easily applied to student or teacher objects of the activity systems, leads to a discussion concerning language view and language learning through the use of the Internet.
