3D Time-lapse Analysis of Seismic Reflection Data to Characterize the Reservoir at the Ketzin CO2 Storage Pilot Site

Huang, Fei January 2016 (has links)
3D time-lapse seismics, also known as 4D seismics, have great potential for monitoring the migration of CO2 at underground storage sites. This thesis focuses on time-lapse analysis of 3D seismic reflection data acquired at the Ketzin CO2 geological storage site in order to improve understanding of the reservoir and how CO2 migrates within it. Four 3D seismic surveys have been acquired to date at the site, one baseline survey in 2005 prior to injection, two repeat surveys in 2009 and 2012 during the injection period, and one post-injection survey in 2015. To accurately simulate time-lapse seismic signatures in the subsurface, detailed 3D seismic property models for the baseline and repeat surveys were constructed by integrating borehole data and the 3D seismic data. Pseudo-boreholes between and beyond well control were built. A zero-offset convolution seismic modeling approach was used to generate synthetic time-lapse seismograms. This allowed simulations to be performed quickly and limited the introduction of artifacts in the seismic responses. Conventional seismic data have two limitations, uncertainty in detecting the CO2 plume in the reservoir and limited temporal resolution. In order to overcome these limitations, complex spectral decomposition was applied to the 3D time-lapse seismic data. Monochromatic wavelet phase and reflectivity amplitude components were decomposed from the 3D time-lapse seismic data. Wavelet phase anomalies associated with the CO2 plume were observed in the time-lapse data and verified by a series of seismic modeling studies. Tuning frequencies were determined from the balanced amplitude spectra in an attempt to discriminate between pressure effects and CO2 saturation. Quantitative assessment of the reservoir thickness and CO2 mass were performed. Time-lapse analysis on the post-injection survey was carried out and the results showed a consistent tendency with the previous repeat surveys in the CO2 migration, but with a decrease in the size of the amplitude anomaly. No systematic anomalies above the caprock were detected. Analysis of the signal to noise ratio and seismic simulations using the detailed 3D property models were performed to explain the observations. Estimation of the CO2 mass and uncertainties in it were investigated using two different approaches based on different velocity-saturation models.

Curvelet imaging and processing : an overview

Herrmann, Felix J. January 2004 (has links)
In this paper an overview is given on the application of directional basis functions, known under the name Curvelets/Contourlets, to various aspects of seismic processing and imaging. Key concepts in the approach are the use of (i) that localize in both domains (e.g. space and angle); (ii) non-linear estimation, which corresponds to localized muting on the coefficients, possibly supplemented by constrained optimization (iii) invariance of the basis functions under the imaging operators. We will discuss applications that include multiple and ground roll removal; sparseness-constrained least-squares migration and the computation of 4-D difference cubes.

Among the key steps of this process is the enhancement of seismic reflections by filtering unwanted signals, called seismic noise, the improvement of signals of interest and the application of imaging procedures. The seismic noise may appear random or coherent. This dissertation will present a technique to attenuate coherent noise, such as ground roll and multiple reflections, based on Empirical Mode Decomposition method. This method will be applied to decompose the seismic trace into Intrinsic Mode Functions. These functions have the properties of being symmetric, with local mean equals zero and the same number of zero-crossing and extremes. The developed technique was tested on synthetic and real data, and the results were considered encouraging / O processamento s?smico tem como principal objetivo fornecer imagem adequada das estruturas geol?gicas da sub-superf?cie de bacias sedimentares.

[en] SEISMIC ABSORPTION AND CORRECTION METHODS / [pt] ABSORÇÃO SÍSMICA E MÉTODOS DE CORREÇÃO

KARINE RIBEIRO PEREIRA 22 January 2016 (has links)
[en] This work aims at analyzing the problem of losses by absorption in seismic reflection data and test three correction methods available in the literature. We use the modeling of the absorption presented by Romanelli Rosa, with the concept of instantaneous frequency, and analyzed the following correction methods: Q compensation, Varela s method and Duarte s method, which is a recursive filter. We note that Duarte s method is computationally faster than the others. However, we can use the Fourier Transform to make it faster in cases where the recursion is interrupted at a step M, smaller than the number of samples N in the seismic data and greater than ln N. Finally, we test the performance of the methods in a marine seismic line in Sergipe-Alagoas Basin, provided by the Agência Nacional do Petróleo, Gás Natural e Biocombustíveis (ANP). The line was reprocessed, with the correction of the losses by absorption applied before stacking, for each method studied. In order to compare the results, the data was also processed without correction of absorption. We observe an increase in the resolution of the geological subsurface in all methods tested in comparison with the data without correction. We also observe the computational advantage of Duarte s method.

Séparation de signaux en mélanges convolutifs : contributions à la séparation aveugle de sources parcimonieuses et à la soustraction adaptative des réflexions multiples en sismique / Signal separation in convolutive mixtures : contributions to blind separation of sparse sources and adaptive subtraction of seismic multiples

Batany, Yves-Marie 14 November 2016 (has links)
The recovery of correlated signals from their linear combinations is a challenging task and has many applications in signal processing. We focus on two problems that are the blind separation of sparse sources and the adaptive subtraction of multiple events in seismic processing. A special focus is put on convolutive mixtures: for both problems, finite impulse response filters can indeed be estimated for the recovery of the desired signals. For instantaneous and convolutive mixing models, we address the necessary and sufficient conditions for the exact extraction and separation of sparse sources by using the L0 pseudo-norm as a contrast function. Equivalences between sparse component analysis and disjoint component analysis are investigated. For adaptive multiple subtraction, we discuss the limits of methods based on independent component analysis and we highlight equivalence with Lp-norm-based methods. We investigate how other regularization parameters may have more influence on the estimation of the desired primaries. Finally, we propose to improve the robustness of adaptive subtraction by estimating the extracting convolutive filters directly in the curvelet domain. Computation and memory costs are limited by using the uniform discrete curvelet transform.

Supress?o do ru?do de rolamento superficial utilizando a transformada Curvelet

Made available in DSpace on 2014-12-17T14:08:36Z (GMT). No. of bitstreams: 1 NisarRO.pdf: 2584049 bytes, checksum: f18a00826204d450659ba7d3316e358e (MD5) Previous issue date: 2009-05-08 / Among the many types of noise observed in seismic land acquisition there is one produced by surface waves called Ground Roll that is a particular type of Rayleigh wave which characteristics are high amplitude, low frequency and low velocity (generating a cone with high dip). Ground roll contaminates the relevant signals and can mask the relevant information, carried by waves scattered in deeper regions of the geological layers. In this thesis, we will present a method that attenuates the ground roll. The technique consists in to decompose the seismogram in a basis of curvelet functions that are localized in time, in frequency, and also, incorporate an angular orientation. These characteristics allow to construct a curvelet filter that takes in consideration the localization of denoise in scales, times and angles in the seismogram.
