Hanging in the balance: the lure of Nietzsche's Apollonian and Dionysiac impulses in Kate Chopin's The Awakening

Unknown Date (has links)
This thesis represents a study of Kate Chopin's groundbreaking novel, The Awakening. Further, it applies Nietzsche's principles of Dionysiac and Apollonian impulses to the literary analysis of the novel. I argue that the protagonist of the novel, Edna Pontellier, embarks on a quest to determine how she may live an authentic life - that is, a life whereby she is true to herself above all others. Ultimately, her search for self is overwhelmed by the imbalance of the Apollonian and Dionysiac impulses against which she struggles. Because Edna cannot successfully mediate this struggle, she reaches the conclusion that she may only attain a truth to her self if she finds that truth in death. / by Jessica Salamin. / Thesis (M.A.)--Florida Atlantic University, 2009. / Includes bibliography. / Electronic reproduction. Studied girlhoods: consciousness, context, and negotiation of identity in the memoirs of Dorothy Allison, Mary Karr, and Barbara Robinette Moss

Unknown Date (has links)
Dorothy Allison's Two or Three Things I Know for Sure, Mary Karr's The Liars' Club, and Barbara Robinette Moss's Change Me into Zeus's Daughter are memoirs published in the 1990s of girlhoods in the late 1950s and early 1960s. This dissertation uses and expands upon the approaches of the multi-disciplinary Girls' Studies in analyzing how these memoirists theorize their own girlhoods. Each memoirist represents her experience in a culture that attempts to marginalize, silence, and define her. An application of the foundational work on girlhood in developmental psychology provides for an analysis of each memoirist's depiction of girlhood as a time of authentic insight and developing agency. Referencing feminist literary criticism allows for an interpretation of how the girls at the center of these works develop agency through growing awareness of the circumstances of their marginalization. And a semiotic literary interpretation adds to the analysis of these works as creative autobiogra phical writing in affording a close reading of how the memoirists portray younger selves learning to read the signs and texts of a culture and becoming aware of their status as girls in working-class families. Each memoirist uses a dual vocal presentation as both the adult memoirist and a younger self give shape to the narrative. Each memoirist represents a distinct southern space intersecting with specifics of the era to form a cultural moment. Social Construction Theory makes available a basis for considering how the memoirists narrate their increasing understanding of race and gender within these specific contexts as well as their resistive voicing of these insights. / Through a Cultural Studies focus this dissertation examines how each memoirist represents a younger self's negotiations with cultural products of the era that work to construct girlhood. Adding to this unpacking of how the memoirists study their own girlhoods, the tools of Postco for an analysis of how the memoirists theorize their own girlhoods in ways that parallel these approaches. This dissertation adds to the evolving field of Girls' Studies in using contemporary theoretical frameworks to interpret how girlhood is constructed, represented, and negotiated with in these memoirs. / by Regina Dilgen. / Thesis (Ph.D.)--Florida Atlantic University, 2011. / Includes bibliography. / Electronic reproduction.

Lopes, Carine Winck January 2016 (has links)
It aims to understand and discuss the inclusion of self-help genre among reading practices of students working to become teachers. Among the objectives, the highlight is the analysis of the ways in which students relate to these readings, their motivations and the impact on their practices, as well as the discussion of the meanings of the rise of self-help literature considering the teaching profession. The research gathered information about reading practices of two hundred and twenty four (224) students of Pedagogy courses from five Higher Education Institutions (HEI), located in the state of Rio Grande do Sul. The collected data enables to state that the self-help literature for teachers is part of the reading practices of Pedagogy students, both as class readings, recommended by the course teachers, and as professional or free time readings. According to the students, the self-help literature is easy to read and understand, practical, motivating, enjoyable. An emotional approach is evoked by the typical discursivity of this genre and is strongly present in publications of Augusto Cury, Içami Tiba, Gabriel Chalita and Hamilton Werneck. According to the students’ statements, these publications promote reflections on their teaching practices and are helpful for the pedagogic planning process. The students’ narratives indicated that self-help books were suggested by some of their teachers from the Pedagogy courses, which highlights the urgent need for dialogue and critical assessment in the participating HEI’s courses about the effects of legitimacy that are produced by course teachers’ reading suggestions in the early years of teacher education.

My other - my self: post-Cartesian ontological possibilities in the fiction of J M Coetzee

Mfune, Damazio Laston January 2011 (has links)
The central argument of my study is that, among other matters, in his works, J.M. Coetzee could be said to demonstrate that the known Self is an embodied being and is not autonomous. With regard to the latter contention, Coetzee intimates that any two Subjects are implicated in each other’s subjectivities in a reciprocal process that involves what Derek Attridge has called “irruptions of otherness” (2005: xii) into the Subject’s subjectivity. These irruptions, which happen during the encounter, lead to a double loss of autonomy for each Subject and this phenomenon renders the relationship between Subjects non-dichotomus or non-binaric. In other words, the Subject does not produce the contents of his or her consciousness in a sui generis and ex nihilo fashion, and his or her ontological indebtedness to the Other constitutes his or her first loss of autonomy. As for those Others that do possess consciousness, the Subject is implicated in their consciousness and this constitutes the Subject’s second loss of autonomy. These losses counter the near solipsistic Nagelian neo-Cartesianism and paves the way for imagining both intra- and inter-species “intersubjectivity”. It is my view that this double loss of autonomy accounts for the sympathetic and empathetic imagination that we encounter in Coetzee’s fiction. Following Coetzee’s intimations of intersubjectivity through irruptions of otherness, what I see as my contribution to studies on this author’s work through this study is the link I have established between the physicalist strain within the philosophy of mind (whose central thesis is that consciousness is an embodied phenomenon) and a modified Kantian “metaphysics”, especially Immanuel Kant’s conception of concepts as comprising form and content. I have deployed this conception in demonstrating the Subject’s ontological indebtedness to external sources of the content part of consciousness. And, through the Husserlian concept of intentionality, and Kant’s (1929: 27) observation that we cannot have appearances without something that appears, I have linked the Subject to the sources of his or her content and thereby also demonstrated that the Subject is not eternally separated or alienated from those sources. Instead, the Subject is not simply contiguous but coterminous and co-extensive, albeit in a mediated way, with the external sources of the content part of his or her consciousness. Thus, while accepting the thesis of the Other’s radical otherness, I modify the thesis of the Other’s radical exteriority. Ultimately, then, ontologically speaking, the Coetzeean project could be described as one of embodying and grounding the supposedly autonomous, solipsistic and freefloating/disembodied Cartesian Subject. This he does by alerting this Subject, first and foremost, to its embodiedness and, further to that, pointing out its ontological indebtedness to its Others and its implication in the Others’s consciousnesses and so prevent it from continuing with its imperialistic and ecological barbarities. However, ethically speaking, beyond the reciprocal ethics that arises from mutual ontological indebtedness and implication, it is the selflessness that characterises a cruciform logic that comes across as the epitome of Coetzeean ethics.

Lopes, Carine Winck January 2012 (has links)
It is the study of the phenomenon of self-help literature in the self-education that appears among readings practice by teachers who work in the early years of elementary school. The starting point is the current teaching professional scenario, which is characterized by both the imperatives of constant updating and teacher depreciation. In this context there is an abundant literature based on the self-help model is available (WERNECK, 1996; CHALITA, 2001; TIBA, 2002; CURY, 2003). Heads straight to teachers (and to whom may be interested or "consider themselves" an educator), in order to provide them formulas to obtain personal and professional success, to ease frustrations and dissatisfactions. The first hypothesis of this research refers to the claim that the book “Pais Brilhantes, Professores Fascinantes” (CURY, 2003) has been one of the most widely read or known among the teachers who work in the early years of elementary school (what means: teachers graduated in Pedagogy). The study does not intend to oppose the self-help books reading by teachers, but aims to understand their reasons and to ask how much this literature is perceived not an educational support, but a support for reflection. Drawing on the theoretical principles and concepts of cultural history in relation to written culture, on landmarks in the history of books and reading, the study releases a glance to this contemporary phenomenon from three closely related questions: teacher education and self- education; reading practices; self-help literature in the field of Education. The study was made conducting a survey of 69 questionnaires and six semistructured interviews collected in six schools of Porto Alegre/RS, two of them private, two public and two municipal public. The theoretical questioning was based in particular on studies of authors such as Anthony Nóvoa, Roger Chartier, Francisco Rüdiger, Arnaldo Chagas and Arquilau Romão. The teachers’ narratives show out that they accept the self-help literature as legitimate reading on the education field. For these teachers, such printed production is consistent with their expectations. For analysis purposes, reading is recognized as a complex practice, there are no stable meanings in texts, even in those prescripts as self-help literature. These readers, or rather, reading teachers, formulate many meanings to what they read, to what they do after that reading and to what they choose among what is offered by the publishing market. The reading is presented, to the teacher which participated in the study, as a fundamental practice for the production of their identities and intervenes in how they perceive themselves in teachers’ condition, especially from how they are reported by the self-help authors whose texts show up among their reading practices.

Contesting narratives : constructions of the self and the nation in Zimbabwe polical auto/ Biography

Javangwe, Tasiyana Dzikai 11 1900 (has links)
This study is an interpretive analysis of Zimbabwean political auto/biographical narratives in contexts of changing culture, race, ethnicity and gender identity images of the self and nation. I used eclectic theories of postcolonialism to explore the fractured nature of both the processes of identity construction and narration, and the contradictions inherent in identity categories of nation and self. The problem of using autobiographical memory to recall the momentous events that formed the contradictory identities of self and nation in the creative imagination of the lives of Ian Smith, Maurice Nyagumbo, Abel Muzorewa, Joshua Nkomo, Doris Lessing, Fay Chung, Judith Garfield Todd, Tendai Westerhof and Lutanga Shaba have been highlighted. The study concluded that there are narrative and ideological disjunctures between experiencing life and narrating those experiences to create approximations of coherent identities of individual selves and those of the nation. The study argued that each of the stories analyzed in this study contributed a version of the multiple Zimbabwean narratives that no one story could ever tell without being contested by others. Thus the study explores how white Rhodesian auto/biographies depend on the imperial repertoire to construct varying, even contradicting, images of white identities and the Rhodesian nation, which are also contested by black nationalist life narratives. The narratives by women writers, both white and black, introduced further instabilities to the male authored narratives by moving beyond the conventional understanding of what is ‘political’ in political auto/biographies. The HIV and AIDS narratives by black women thrust into the public sphere personalized versions of self so that the political consequence of their inclusion was not only to image Zimbabwe as a diseased society, but one desperately in need of political solutions to confront the different pathologies inherited from colonialism and which also have continued in the post-independence period. / English Studies / (D.
