The Light of Christmas : Developing my self-esteem through producing a Christmas album

Lehesvuori, Johanna January 2015 (has links)
In addition to the written report, my debut album The Light of Christmas is included in this Master thesis. The album was released 15th. November 2014 and it was a success. I worked as an artist and as a producer in this album project. The album consists of thirteen songs. It includes three different Ave Maria songs from Schubert, Bach-Gounod and Caccini and other Mary songs in Finnish (Kalliokoski, Reger) and in Swedish (Hahn). I also recorded traditional Finnish Christmas songs. The written report of this thesis describes the most important part of this project, the production of the CD from the beginning till the end. The artistic self-esteem is also in focus. My instrument, voice, is in me. It develops all the time. It is never the same. I needed to accept this fact and believe in my skills as a professional singer. I am a mentally stronger singer today than I was a year ago. I believe in what I am doing and I also believe in my future as a professional singer. The feedback from my album supported me as an artist and in my career. / <p>Appendice;</p><p>Bilaga: 1 CD - The Light of Christmas</p>

Image management on Facebook : impression management, self esteem and the Cultivation Theory / Impression management, self esteem and the Cultivation Theory

Meyer, Morgan Elizabeth 07 February 2012 (has links)
Within the cultural context of social media networks, this study explores the image management behaviors of untagging and selective posting of photos on Facebook. Through a survey, respondents answered questions regarding whether they engage in these behaviors and why they do so. This study sought to find a relationship between high self-monitors and the behaviors of selective photo posting and those with low self-esteem and the behaviors of selective photo posting. It is predicted that those who are high self- monitors and those with low self-esteem are more likely to engage in selective photo posting. This study also applies the Cultivation Theory to practices of image management while providing insight into the implications image management may have on our society. / text

Lifestyle, self-esteem and obesity among children

Tin, Sze-pui,Pamela, 田詩蓓 January 2013 (has links)
Background: Childhood obesity remains a major public health concern. While preventing childhood obesity is important, the effectiveness of existing prevention strategies is indefinite. Important obesity contributors are speculated to be overlooked while the role of well-studied obesity-related factors has been questioned. Objectives: 1) Although the association between lifestyle and obesity is seemingly well-established, how an overlooked dietary factor, breakfast location, associates with obesity was investigated 2) At a time where inconsistencies in findings for the frequently studied association between TV viewing and obesity still exist, this thesis tested for the existence of the said association in the understudied Chinese population 3) The effect of mental health on childhood obesity is understudied. Using self-esteem as a mental health indicator, the effect of self-esteem on childhood obesity was investigated To understand the role of lifestyle factors in the association between self-esteem and obesity, how 4) breakfast habit and 5) TV viewing habit associates with self-esteem was explored Methods: A cohort of 83405 primary 4 (P4) Department of Health Student Health Service participants (49.7% male, mean age 9.9 years) in 1998-2000 were successfully tracked for 2 years into primary 6 (P6). A self-administered health questionnaire collected information on the breakfast and TV habits of participants alongside other lifestyle characteristics. Self-esteem was assessed using the four Culture Free Self-Esteem Inventories for Children (SEI) subscales. Body mass index (BMI) was derived using objectively measured weight and height. Weight status was classified in accordance to International Obesity Task Force standards. Logistic, multinomial logistic and linear regression were used to yield adjusted odds ratios (AOR) and β-coefficients for becoming overweight/obese in P6 (among P4 normal weight children), breakfast skipping/location, TV viewing habit and SEI subscale scores. Breakfast skipping behaviour was tested as a mediator in the association between self-esteem and obesity using standard mediation procedures. Breakfast and TV viewing habits were tested as effect modifiers in the same association by inclusion of interaction terms in models. Results: Among normal weight P4 children, those who skipped breakfast (AOR: 1.24; 95% CI: 1.02 to 1.51) or ate away from home (1.39; 1.20 to 1.60) were more likely to become overweight/obese in P6. Poor self-esteem was also associated with higher AORs for becoming overweight/obese, particularly among girls. While TV viewing in P4 did not predict overweight/obesity in P6, those who increased TV watching hours (≤2h/day to 2h/day) during the two follow-up years were 32% more likely to become overweight/obese in P6 than their counterparts who maintained watching ≤2h/day. Breakfast habit and self-esteem was bi-directionally associated. Although a curvilinear inverted J-shaped relation between P4 TV viewing and P6 self-esteem was observed, self-esteem did not predict TV viewing habit. While neither breakfast nor TV viewing habit significantly interacted with self-esteem to predict obesity, breakfast skipping was found to be a potential partial mediator in the association between self-esteem and obesity. Conclusion: Breakfast location, self-esteem and TV viewing patterns over time are important to consider in relation to childhood obesity. Additionally, the association between self-esteem and obesity could be mediated by lifestyle factors. / published_or_final_version / Community Medicine / Doctoral / Doctor of Philosophy

Idrottande gymnasieungdomars självkänsla : en kvantitativ studie av relationen mellan elitidrottande ungdomar och självkänsla / Athletic high school youths self-esteem : a quantitative study of the relationship between athletic youths and self-esteem

Hansson, Amanda, Järvinen, Stina January 2015 (has links)
There is not so much research on psychological problems in elite sport, however during recent years several debates about elite sport and if it is in fact only healthy benefits and what is considered right and wrong for young people's health. The purpose of this study is to investigate young elite athletes self-esteem. The study includes a total of 80 students from five different national sports college in Sweden. The study is a quantitative study made by a validated questionnaire, Self-Esteem Scale. Results from Self-Esteem Scale shows that elite young athletes have good self-esteem but that there is a difference between young elite athletes girls and young elite athletes boys. The study shows no difference in self-esteem when it comes to participation in individual sports or team sports, however, the results show that girls in team sports have lower self-esteem than girls in individual sports. In the result you can not discern any difference in self-esteem in relation to the amount of training.

Exploring the mutual influence of self and relationship : a theory of couple identity negotiation

Kwang, Tracy Nai 04 January 2011 (has links)
Relationships can shape the self-concept, draw out unique aspects of an individual’s personality, and influence individual perspectives and goals. Yet the self is not a passive player in relationships as self-related goals and motives can also influence how relationships form and develop. While the field is replete with research on the unidirectional influence between self and relationships, surprisingly little has been done on synergistic effect of combined self and relationship influences. I present a new theory of couple identity negotiation that captures how two individuals in a relationship negotiate their independent identities to form a unified couple identity. I hypothesize that the process through which an individual and his/her partner merge to create a new couple identity is crucial in determining relationship longevity and satisfaction. I draw from social identity theory (Turner et al., 1987) and identity fusion theory (Swann et al., 2009) to propose three models of couple identity negotiation: Model A involves the self being subsumed by the partner; Model B involves a negotiation wherein the self and partner both contribute to the couple identity; Model C the self subsuming the partner’s self. Study 1 tests the links between the different models to relationship outcomes, namely relationship satisfaction and commitment. Study 2 explores personality correlates of the models. Results demonstrate that couple identity negotiation models predict different levels of relationship quality. Furthermore, the models are not significantly correlated with personality variables, suggesting that the models are specific to the relationship, and are not driven solely by individual differences. / text

SELF-ESTEEM, LENGTH OF FAMILIAL STATUS AND PERSONALLY PERCEIVED FAMILIAL SUCCESS IN SINGLE PARENT FAMILIES

Brassington, Robert Martin January 1981 (has links)
One hundred and eighteen female single parents completed the Coopersmith Self-Esteem Inventory and a personal questionnaire at six-month intervals over a one-year period. Self-Esteem levels and related social and economic factors were explored to ascertain: (a) levels of self-esteem maintained by single parents as length of status increase; (b) social, economic and personal perceptions related to familial status; (c) associations between the remaining female single parents level of self-esteem, length of single parent status and selected social and economic variables. The study included female single parents from a large urban area. They were English speaking, living alone with their children and were single parents as a result of marriage dissolution. The participants were not involved in either individual or family therapy. Data analysis included the reliability of the Coopersmith Self-Esteem Inventory and repeated measures analysis of variance and multiple regression analysis to determine the stability of self-esteem over time. Discriminate function analysis was used to explore potential relationships between self-esteem, selected socio-economic conditions and personal perceptions of familial status. Test-retest reliability scores of self-esteem resulted in a Cronbachs Alpha = .88. Internal consistency computed on the data resulted in a Guttman coefficient of .89. There were no significant changes in self-esteem over the one-year period of the study. Results of the discriminate function procedure identified eight characteristics as significant discriminators between low, medium and high self-esteem. These include income, age, education, and length of single-parent status of the single parent, as well as their children's school progress, achievement behavior, and related amount of discipline. This study supports the notion that how the single parents view themselves is to a large extent dependent on their parenting ability and self-initiative. Recommendations for further research include a follow-up study to examine the changes in self-esteem over extended periods of time and an investigation of specific child rearing techniques that enhance self-esteem.
