Impact of national senior certificate examination diagnostic report on learner performance in mathematics

Chihambakwe, Thabani January 2017 (has links)
A dissertation submitted to the Faculty of Education in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the Degree of Masters in the Department of Educational Psychology and Special Needs Education at the University Of Zululand, 2017 / The study sought to determine whether the use of the National Senior Certificate Examination Diagnostic Report (NSCEDR) in an intervention programme would improve the performance of learners in Mathematics. The study utilised a mixed method approach. An action research that employed a quasi-experiment, one group, pre-test and post-test research design was used. A total of 74 grade twelve learners, 46 girls and 28 boys, were selected and participated in an intervention programme for six weeks. Three NSCEDR documents, from 2014 to 2016, were used to determine the topics that were challenging to learners in Mathematics, as well as the errors and misconceptions made by learners in examinations. The topics that were challenging were identified together with their frequency in the three documents. The marks of the learners before and after the intervention programme were compared and analysed. The Statistical Package of Social Sciences (SPSS) and Excel were used to analyse the research data. The results of the study revealed that the use of the NSCEDR findings in the intervention programme improved the performance of the learners, while the impact was indifferent for boys and girls, and as well as for low performers and high performers. Trigonometry, Euclidean Geometry and Counting Principle were some of the most challenging topics in Grade 12 Mathematics that were identified from the NSCEDR. Based on these results, it was recommended that the NSCEDR should be readily available to all teachers to use, as their use in the classroom improved the performance of the learners.

Factors influencing learners’ performance in Geography in the National Senior Certificate Examination in selected public high schools within uThungulu District

Ahiaku, Philip Kwashi Atiso January 2017 (has links)
A dissertation submitted to the Faculty of Education in fulfillment of the requirements for the Degree of Master of Education (Geography) in the Department of Curriculum and Instructional Studies at the University of Zululand, 2017 / The purpose of this study was to identify factors that influence the low academic performance of learners in geography during the National Senior Certificate examination within the uThungulu District. The study made use of the national and district matriculation results from the examination directorate of the Department of Basic Education. The conceptualisation developed from the contemporary literature was used to develop instruments for data collection. A questionnaire was developed to collect views from Grade 12 geography educators on factors influencing learner performance in the district. It also solicited ideas about what should be done to improve learner performance in the subject. The second phase of data collection was qualitative study, which was conducted to augment the quantitative findings, which took place at the same time. Fifty (50) questionnaires were issued and only forty (40) educators responded and ten (10) other educators were taken through an interview. The district geography subject adviser was also interviewed. The results indicate that there are various factors that impede learner performances in geography in the district. The results from both descriptive and inferential statistics reveal factors such as educator characteristics, school management and resource availability, parental involvement in education and learner characteristics as emerging factors influencing the performance of learners in geography. Learners’ average matriculation (matric) results from the schools were estimated against educators’ characteristics such as qualifications, experience in teaching the subject, approaches used in teaching, and matric marking experience. The relationship between the independent and the dependent variables was determined using the t-test at 0.05 level of significance. The result indicated that in the uThungulu District learners’ performance in geography is strongly influenced by educators’ qualifications, and experience in matric marking. Findings from the this study were compared with the existing contemporary literature to enable the researcher to make recommendations to stakeholders to remedy deficiencies found to impede learners’ performance in geography in the National Senior Certificate in public high schools within the uThungulu District.

Maidstone Estates: Utilizing Research-Based Design to Create the Luxury, Location, and Lifestyle of a Continuing Care Retirement Community

Hardin, Jake 01 May 2023 (has links) (PDF)
The nature of this essay explores the implementation of research-based design to the senior living concept and showcases how design can improve and empower the lives of our seniors as they hit retirement age. Over the course of the essay, the project will begin as a concept and navigate its way through the design processes until the concept is fully developed as a stand-alone package that speaks for itself. Maidstone Estates is built upon the guidelines of the Green House Project and outlines the mixed-use nature of design involving branding, building code, ADA compliance, universal design, and the three acuity levels of senior living: Independent Living, Assisted Living, and Memory Care. As of now, there are over 371 Green House homes across the country. This essay is designed to utilize the research-based design and implement it into the aesthetic of East Hampton, an area where there is a set standard for architecture and lifestyle, and to show that this model can be used anywhere and transform eldercare across the country and around the world.

The Relationship Between Perceived Health, Health Attitudes, and Healthy Offerings for Seniors at a Family Restaurant

Lee, Sangtak 05 June 2009 (has links)
Personal health can influence all aspects of customer behavior and this influence is more manifest within the senior market segment. Health issues also greatly impact the restaurant industry. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to investigate how health status and health attitude influence family restaurant selection criteria. In order to measure selfrated health status and health attitude for seniors, the Health Perceptions Questionnaire(HPQ) and the Perceived Health competence Scale (PHCS) were used. Most senior participants reported that health-related family restaurant selection criteria and food price were important when they select a family restaurant. Also, while the HPQ and the PHCS were not correlated with food price in the family restaurant industry, the overall results of this study revealed that health status and health attitude for seniors were positively correlated with health-related family restaurant selection criteria. This reflects that offering healthy meals on menus is more important for senior customers with a high level of health condition or health attitude than other senior customers. The results also showed that healthy senior customers who have a positive health attitude are willing to pay more money for their healthy menu items. Therefore, in order to maximize their profits, managers and operators of family restaurants need to keep creating healthy items for their menus and promote those items to the segment of the senior market which has a high level of health condition or health attitude. / Master of Science

Articulation of Junior and Senior High School Curricula

Joachims, Belle 01 January 1929 (has links) (PDF)
Our American school system with its distinction between elementary and secondary schools grew out of European tradisione. The history of secondary education in America abone that there have been three periods of development, each characterized by a dietinot type of school. As our colonial policies were shaped by Europeans, naturally our schools were organized to confora with the European institutions; and the Latin grammar school was the dominant institution for secondary education in American until the middle of the eighteenth century. During the Revolutionary period there was a tendency to turn from the school fostering social distinction to one more democratic in nature; and the private academy arose to supply training demanded by the social and economic needs of the tines. The next logical step extended public support and control to an institution combining the beet characteristics of the Latin grammar school and the academy resulting in the establishment of the first its high school in 1621. School officials and school patrons of the present str have united in an attempt to develop a national policy to education and at the same time to adapt established schools to individual localities.

Faculty Teaching Goals at Senior Research Universities

Johnson, Lisa Dawn 21 August 1997 (has links)
The purpose of this study was to identify faculty teaching goals at senior research universities and to determine variables which could be used to predict these goals. The eight disciplines used in this study were: accounting, chemistry, computer science, economics, English, math, mechanical engineering, and psychology. The independent variables were: gender, academic rank, course level, tenure, and four Biglan categories (pure-hard, pure-soft, applied-hard, and applied-soft). Using the Teaching Goals Inventory (Angelo & Cross, 1993), the teaching goals and primary teaching role of faculty at senior research universities across eight academic disciplines were identified (N = 352). Through a principal axis factor analysis, seven factors emerged for the data gathered from the Teaching Goals Inventory, results of which were slightly different from that of previous research. Further analyses indicated differences between the teaching goals and primary teaching role of faculty at senior research universities, community colleges, and four-year colleges. Seven one-way ANOVAs and subsequent post-hoc comparisons were conducted which indicated significant differences (p < .05) among the factor means across the eight academic disciplines. Comparisons of the primary teaching role across the eight academic disciplines also indicated significant differences (p < .05) in the percentage of faculty selecting each of the six roles. Furthermore, this study provides additional evidence to support the theory that the Biglan categories help explain the differences in teaching goals across academic disciplines. Significant differences (p < .05) were detected in the teaching goals and primary teaching role of senior research university faculty across the four Biglan categories. Through regression analyses, three of the four Biglan categories, gender, and level of course entered as predictors of teaching goals. Academic rank and tenure did not enter into any of the regression equations; however, further analyses indicated these variables were intercorrelated with several other independent variables. Implications for these findings are discussed. / Ph. D.

Pensionärers intresse till fysisk aktivitet : En enkätstudie med syfte att undersöka intresset för Senior Sport School bland pensionärer i Gävleborgs län

Brusman, Sebastian, Jonsson, Simon January 2016 (has links)
The average life expectancy in society increases, and with this also the risk increases that older people can suffer different injuries and diseases, this is also a problem that leads to the well-being of the older age group decreases. Physical activity is a method of prevention and care of diseases or injuries, but there is also a method of increasing the welfare of people. The purpose of the study was to examine retirees attitudes and motivations for physical activity and thereby identify the interest for a Senior Sports School. The selection was based on retirees aged 65 and above and living in Gavleborg. Survey was chosen as the method, and the study took place in two different PRO associations and some individual questionnaires handed out via the internet. The results showed that those who were motivated to be physically active is in the current situation more physically active than those who were not motivated and that another motivating factor was to train in groups and meet others. Furthermore, the results show that the retirees who want more knowledge to become more active and healthy is either active very few days a week or all days of the week. The conclusion shows the importance of motivating seniors to be physically active, it is not enough that there are opportunities to be physically active, it is equally important that they have something that motivates them. Another conclusion is the importance of social interaction and community for seniors, then they have through physical activity opportunities to make new contacts and maintain now that they no longer have a job to go to.

Dobrovolnický projekt jako cesta k posílení mezigeneračních vztahů / Volunteer project as way to strenghten intergenerational relationships

Hušek Morawitzová, Soňa January 2015 (has links)
The intergenerational relationships between the generation of young people and the generation of the elderly constitute the topic of this thesis. The theoretical part of the thesis deals with the specifics of generations of young and old people, demographic trends and aspects that have been occuring with an increasing number of seniors. Misunderstanding and intergenerational conflicts belong among the negative consequences of an aging society. In order to prevent intergenerational conflicts, it is necessary to create conditions so that the members of different generations can get to know each other better and comprehend the lifestyle of a different generation. Due to the transformation of the contemporary family - with grandchildren not having an opportunity to be with their grandparents in close contact as much as it used to be in the past - it is necessary to look for new ways to interconnect the worlds of young and old people. A volunteer project focused on an informal intergenerational learning is one of the options. Regarding the empirical part of the paper, it aims to determine whether the implementation of a volunteer project - that involves students as volunteers and seniors as clients of a home for the elderly - may contribute to the intergenerational rapprochement, whether common...
