Friberg, Beatrice, Wahlstein, Elsa January 2023 (has links)
In this paper, the topic of sentimentality and ensoulment will be explored. Sentimentality is something very personal and difficult to define and linking it to a design process is challenging. The English term ensoulment, which will also be discussed in the work, refers to the value that a design takes in and how the design can convey a certain feeling. These two concepts related to design can describe how a user values an artefact. There are several articles discussing sentimentality in design and how important it is to incorporate it into a design process, but very few have applied it and produced prototypes or products. Working with a concept linked to emotions and personal memories makes it difficult to get a general approach in a design process. The outline of this work questions in what way it is possible to achieve sentimentality in design by working with four terms: engagement, history, augmentation, and perceived durability. The methods chosen to be applied in this work are research by design, focus group, thematic analysis, and a look & feel prototype. These methods were chosen because they were considered suitable for answering the research question. Two focus groups were conducted based on this, where participants were encouraged to discuss their own views on sentimentality and how and what they value in objects they value. The results of the study show that it is not possible to actively create a product that conveys sentimentality, but it is possible to trigger a sentimental feeling in users by using links to emotions and memories. However, the results show that ensoulment is something that can be better incorporated into a design process to create value for the user. The conclusion drawn is that it is not possible to create a sentimental value in a new product, but it is possible to trigger sentimentality using different senses. Using the four terms will mean that a design has a greater chance of being ensouled from the start.

Representation and Imagination of the Holocaust in Young Adult Literature

Mackarey, Amelia 01 May 2014 (has links)
The intent of this thesis is to examine and interpret the representation of the Holocaust in young adult literature. The tone, style, and emotion used to convey the Holocaust experience, both in fiction and nonfiction stories, in eyewitness and indirect accounts, affects its representation to a young adult audience. I will study the effects of sentimentality, realism, and fun and their impact on our understanding and remembrance of the Holocaust. I will analyze several texts, including Island on Bird Street, The Book Thief, and Night. The paradox of finding an appropriate balance between presenting a realistic portrayal of the Holocaust and understanding that we could never fathom the horrors of the Holocaust is one that plagues both writers and readers of this genre of literature and I plan to critique the ways in which different works discuss the subject. Ultimately, I will consider the conflict of how we negotiate between complete repression versus obsessive memorialization. What is the role of memory? What is the proper way to move on from the horrors of the past while still honoring the innocent people who lived and died? Through my analysis, I hope to attempt to answer these questions and, perhaps, provide suggestions for appropriate representation and memorialization.

The goal is to strive for theoretical consistency of care ethics as an alternative carried out by an ethical review of human rights, since it generates more robust results regarding the effectiveness of their prescriptions, within the theory of moral action. The methods used for the making of the work are, concurrently, the deductive method of theoretical approach, with the aim to verify the conclusions of the argumentative analysis of this metaethical theory find satisfactory answer to the problems previously identified and, then, that the level criticism of some of their claims lay the foundations of this theory, the same way as the dialectical method to justify the adoption of this new theory instead of the current one, which act as a parameter of formulation with logical-argumentative resolute purpose. The present study consists of four (04) chapters, the first being the introduction, besides conclusion. The second chapter presents the theoretical and philosophical foundations of contemporary ethics of care, from sentimentality and ethical emotivism, in addition to the ethics of care seminal feminist theory. The third one outlines the fundaments of some theoretical misconceptions in Kantian rationality, especially the so-called moral cleansing process that seeks to promote the unity of reason. The fourth chapter draws up a conceptual attempt to empathize and outlined the main arguments of the empathy-based ethics of care, etched categories by analyzing some authors present the philosophy and moral psychology. Finally, I conclude that it is possible the theoretical underpinning of care ethics from empathy as well as possible and be more advisable to apply this theory as a basis and instrument of Human Rights instead of the actual Kantian ethics, since it brings together most successfully moral judgments and the subsequent action according to their requirements. I propose feelings as non-textual elements of human rights and therefore the urgent need for an education in/ for human rights also as a sentimental education. Other issues concerning the validity of ethics of care and empathy remain open in the final, which highlights the importance for further investigation of this theory under the realm of Law.

Sense and sentimentality : the soldier-horse relationship in the Great War

Flynn, Jane January 2016 (has links)
During the Great War, the horse was essential to military efficiency. Horses hauled artillery guns, transported vital supplies and ammunition, and carried men into battle. The military horse was, in fact, a weapon. Many thousands of horses were purchased and supplied to the British Expeditionary Force at great expense, because without them an Army could not function. Although the British Army was the most modern of all the belligerent forces during the Great War, the horse was nevertheless favoured because of its reliability and versatility. For example, horses coped much better than motor vehicles where the going was difficult. It was horse-power that ensured the Army’s lines-of-communication were maintained. Indeed, without an adequate supply of horses it is probable that the British Army would not have achieved victory in 1918. However, the military horse was also a weapon which quickly broke down when it was not properly maintained. The British Army had learned this to its cost during the Boer War, when more horses had been killed by bad management than by enemy action. Good horse management in the field depended upon the soldier. It was essential that he had received adequate training, and it was also essential that he take responsibility for his horse’s well-being. During the Great War, all soldiers given ‘ownership’ of a horse were taught to put their horse’s needs before their own, and to always think first of their horse. They were taught to see their horse in the same way as an infantryman would his rifle; as something he may have cause to rely upon and which it was therefore in his best interests to look after. The soldier-horse relationship developed once the soldier’s care became one of sympathetic consideration. Soldiers and their horses spent most of their lives together when on active service, and it was this close proximity which helped to bond them into a unit. Many soldiers came to see their horses as comrades; they named them, and went to great lengths to protect their horses from harm. From the Army’s perspective, the soldier-horse relationship ensured that an expensive military asset was properly maintained. At home, portrayals of the soldier-horse relationship extended this vital contribution to the war effort beyond the battlefield. For example, images and stories that told of the soldier’s kindness to his horse bolstered a positive illusion the British had of themselves as a people capable of both strength and compassion. Images of the soldier-horse relationship played an important part in helping the British people to imagine war. They also provided much-needed comfort and reassurance when friends and loved ones were in danger. Importantly, by studying these portrayals dispassionately, we find that they were never entire flights of fancy, and often bore more than a passing resemblance to the soldier’s actual experience. Indeed, it becomes possible to question whether sense and sentimentality ever did entirely part company in the British imagination. Like their flesh and blood inspiration, portrayals of the soldier-horse relationship have not received the attention they merit. By rectifying this oversight, this thesis not only contributes to study of the horse-human relationship, but also to our knowledge of the Great War. Not least, because we achieve a better appreciation of what it was like to live in the War’s shadow.

La marca personal en Perú y su relación con la psicología de masas: el caso de Paolo Guerrero / Personal Branding in Peru and its relationship with mass psychology: the case of Paolo Guerrero

Barreda Panez, Stephanie 15 December 2020 (has links)
A mass is made up of individuals oriented towards a fixed direction, who can consciously lose their personality and direct their feelings and thoughts towards a defined direction. This was evidenced in the 2018 World Cup in Russia when the Peruvian soccer team managed to qualify thanks to the captain of the team, Paolo Guerrero, who generated a great commercial movement due to this feat so longed for by Peruvians. The purpose of this research is to diagnose and deepen the knowledge about the case of Paolo Guerrero and the mass psychology that it generated at a commercial level as a result of the classification. It will review how personal brands connect with people through their actions and media influence provided by the media. A qualitative exploratory study methodology was proposed through in-depth interviews with specialists and two focus groups made up of university students, followers of Peruvian soccer. / Tesis

Remembering and performing the ideal campus : the sound cultures of interwar American universities

Schafer, Kimberly Ann 14 December 2010 (has links)
In this dissertation, I examine extracurricular music of American universities between the two World Wars and consider it as an indicator of the idealization of collegiate life. Interwar discourse at American universities demonstrated the two contrasting ideals of the older collegiate model and the more recent university model. The collegiate model was associated with ideals related to character building, a sense of community, and a common curriculum, whereas the university model was associated with social utility, research, and liberal culture. Proponents of the collegiate model idealized an older collegiate life in America. One version of this idealized collegiate life captured the popular imagination of Americans in the late nineteenth century – the vision of students developing their social skills in the extracurriculum at the expense of their intellect in the official curriculum. Various members of the university community at Stanford University, The University of Texas, and Yale University promoted this idyllic view of collegiate life in the extracurriculum. Marching bands, glee clubs, and bell instruments were thought to transmit collegiate values of community and character building. The music’s adaptation to modern trends and values, however, reveal that it did not fully adhere to an idealized image of pre-modern college life. The university communities believed that music (and sound in general) with its ability to reach listeners’ memories and emotions, was unique in its access to interior subjectivity. This belief guided university administrators to use campus sounds to instill school spirit and nostalgia. Yet the failure of certain audio memorabilia, namely the Talking Page of the Onondagan yearbook of Syracuse University and The Cactus in Sound of The University of Texas, leads us to question this assumption of special interior access. Administrators, students, and alumni all had a hand in using sounds to elicit these strong sentiments toward their university, which administrators hoped would foster increased financial support / text
