Unhappy Endings: Continuing the Nineteenth-Century Novel

Foster, Emily Anne January 2024 (has links)
“Unhappy Endings” explores dynamics of novelistic closure by examining Victorian texts that come to a halt in a way that invites subsequent continuation. Each chapter of this dissertation confronts a different fact pattern: a different kind of incompletion and subsequent continuation. “Unhappy Endings” investigates texts left explicitly unfinished, texts left ambiguously unfinished, the impact of the Victorian serial form on the concept of “finishedness,” and the perceived kinds of finishedness, of a text. These Victorian texts that question the concept of finishedness are taken up and continued in several different ways: continued by the original author, by an author’s family member, by an editor or publisher, by some other author or writer, or even by the reader-public. Thus, as the factual circumstances that create the “unfinished” and “continued” status of my exemplar texts vary from chapter to chapter, the working standard for what qualifies as “unfinished” and “continued” necessarily alters accordingly. The following questions are inherent in my focus here on continuation and completion: What is an ending? What is “whole”? What makes a whole complete? Must a novel have a discernible ending to be complete? To be a whole? What can we learn when a novel, abandoned for whatever reason by one author, is “continued” and completed by another author? I use close reading, digital humanities, and biographical criticism to identify the ways that literature of the Victorian era was, and still is, particularly susceptible to continuation. This continued susceptibility paves the way, perhaps, for Victorian literature’s sustained impact on modern literature and media.

Barraza Toledo, Vania T. January 2005 (has links)
From the Serialized Story to the Reality Show: a Theoretical Approach to Models of Reading about Fiction and Reality) discusses and combines three hypotheses. In the introduction, this research intends to expand Reader Response theories proposing that the reading experience occurs in a concrete frame of time and space. This has been called the 'spatial condition of reading acts.' The premise is that literary artifacts manipulate the reader, not only by their content, but also through their form.Chapter I examines how reality and fiction are both constructed as cultural discourses, and reviews how fictitious texts negate their invented nature. Simultaneously, it evaluates the formal structure of an audiovisual narrative, and identify another level of manipulation over a spectator, in this case, through film montage. Chapter II studies a third facet of literary domination exerted by popular culture artifacts; this is the production and distribution of the serialized novel. Additionally, its presents the second hypothesis of this research: the consumption of fiction works as a synecdoche regarding the consumption of exchange goods in a consumerist society.Chapter III, then are the previous chapter is more focused on content. It reviews a necessity of fiction in contemporary society to explain daily life experiences, motivating a cultural sense that reality pretends to imitate fantasy. Therefore serialized stories become models for interpreting real life. Finally, Chapter IV states the third hypothesis of this investigation: serialized stories and reality shows share a similar structure of distribution and content to present its message. Consequently, the tenuous boundary between reality and fiction becomes a becomes an experience manipulated by mass media which turns out, turning out serialized stories as valid referent for a hyper-media and hyper-consumer society. In sum, this dissertation examines Hispanic culture from the most abstract of the literary phenomena, to the consumption of hyper-real symbols of contemporary culture. The theoretical and practical contribution of this perspective is to extend literary, to media studies; reviewing economical and popular phenomena from discourse perspectives.

Personnages et stéréotypes dans les romans d’Alain Robbe-Grillet / Characters and stereotypes in the work of Robbe-Grillet

Jassim, Hassan 01 July 2010 (has links)
This thesis aims at investigating the presence of stereotypical characters in the work of Robbe-Grillet retrieved from the paralitterature. Stereotypes that will be discussed in this work are: the romantic loner, wandering the city, the vigilante crime, the detective, the killer, the trio of novels of the jealousy, the prostitute, the perverse voyeur, the stripper, and the storyteller. After this “exploration”, we reach the flowing conclusion: as a whole, the work of Robbe-Grillet is rooted in the stereotype. However, we will discover that this is not an apology for stereotype. But simply taking into account its action in contemporary culture and the role of the latter in the elaboration discourse of the work.

Mytologické a mýtotvorné rysy Hvězdných válek a specifika jejich příběhů coby příběhu na pokračování / Mythological and Mythogenic Aspects of Star Wars and the Specificities of its Stories in Regard to Serialized Storytelling

Pavlíček, Milan January 2011 (has links)
Mythological and Mythogenic Aspects of Star Wars and the Specificities of its Stories in Regard to Serialized Storytelling covers the six stories of the Star Wars series in relation to Emil Volek's story model whose terminology and story typology is used to describe how the stories influence one another, which is to say, how the stories influence the reception of the other stories in the series and how the reception has changed over time. The diploma thesis also examines how myth is being applied to Star Wars and reflects whether such connection is justified. Both Star Wars and myth are given a definition and the relationship between the series and Joseph Campbell's monomyth, a concept frequently connected to Star Wars, is explored. The final part of the text describes narrative elements and processes participating in the creation of the original trilogy. An appendix covers various issues in regard to the translation of the series into Czech and briefly evaluates existing translations.

L'art du feuilleton dans les Habits Noirs de Paul Féval / The art of serial novel in Paul Féval’s Les habits noirs

Ntsame Mve, Carole 05 December 2012 (has links)
Our Thesis is based on the eight novels from the Paul Féval’s cycle Les habits noirs (The black clothes): Les habits noirs, Cœur d’acier, La rue de Jérusalem, L’arme invisible, Maman Léo, L’avaleur de sabre, Les compagnons du trésor, La bande cadet. We decided to study the series Les habits noirs of Paul Féval because we are convinced that this cycle of novels requests the collaboration of the reader. We do not claim to exhaust all the interpretative potential which these novels conceal, but we think in contrast that many things remain to be said. The studies undertaken in our work are only one contribution in the field of literature, and more precisely in literary criticism. The 19th Century in France is obviously the era of the rise of many innovations. All the fields of technological and intellectual activity will know important changes. Technological and scientific fields, as well as Humanities, have known changes that deeply modified them. Paul Féval is often considered as one of the most popular novelists of the 19th Century: he wrote tales, short stories, books of history, autobiographical, fantastic, historical, social, epistolary, crime novels, plays; he was also journalist and lecturer. Our work is devoted to all that refers to the human and intellectual formation in Paul Féval’s Les habits noirs. Our issue is to know if Les habits noirs contains the main characteristics of the 19th Century serial novels.

Le récit de meurtre en France (1870-1899) / The narrative of murder in France (1870-1899)

Monnereau, Mado 16 November 2017 (has links)
There is a novelistic hybridity of “the narrative of murder” conducive to the late of the 19th century. Rested on several forms of crime’s fictions (it refers to decadents and naturalists works, novels, short stories, serials), I should explain its narrative forms. Analysis is at the very heart of this matter: inquest, psychological profile of the murderer and historical references participate to these narratives. A new kind of murderer comes out; criminal uses new skills as he evolves in a modern world. This evolution is header by the need to reach a wide audience for murder’s writing arouses such keen interest. If the press tends to change the journalist into a detective, assigning him the mission to keep the reader informed about urban mysteries surrounding, novelists draw their inspiration from the narrative of criminal investigation and portraits of criminals reported by newspapers. Besides, the notion of mystery is related to the one of murder’s narrative in so far these nightmarish writings oscillate between fantasy and reality. The aim is thus to explain the murder as an excessive act which goes beyond the simple idea of a thematic. Thanks to his study of social deviances, the writer tries to voice popular fears. Many influences must be taken into account: due to the turn of the century, a wave of pessimism sweeps through Europe. The third republic’s hesitant beginnings, the “Affaires” and the anarchist attacks make an unforgettable impression. The aim of this thesis will be to define the narrative of murder through the exhibition of its different forms, and its place in media environment.

APROPRIAÇÃO E REUTILIZAÇÃO DE RESÍDUOS CULTURAIS: PRÁTICAS SERIALIZANTES EM AMAZONA, DE SÉRGIO SANT ANNA / APPROPRIATION AND REUSE OF CULTURAL WASTE: SERIALIZATED PRACTICES IN AMAZONA, BY SÉRGIO SANT ANNA

Franke, Carine Daniele 09 March 2012 (has links)
Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior / This research aimed to analyze in the work Amazona, by the brazilian writer Sérgio Sant'Anna, how new forms of contemporary literature are taking advantage of serialized procedures representation, typical of speeches and/or vehicles from the scope of mass culture. The first chapter seeks to situate the literary writing of Amazona within a cultural background in process of depletion, which operates the weakening of the illustrated models of representation and enables the emergence of new literary forms, which stand for the appropriation, the deviation, the rewriting, the secondary status, the simulation. In the second chapter, which deals with the discursive procedures of hybridization present in Amazona, the aim is to highlight the influence, in the narrative fabrication of the novel, of images and compositional procedures typically feuilletonistic, mapping the ways in which the narrative resembles and conforms to address this serialized discourse of this entertainment literature. From this considerations, it becomes possible, then, already in the last chapter, to determine how the narrative appropriates these discourses in order to recycle then and reframes them, as they are removed from their home environment and inserted into a new context of production. For another perspective, if it is notorious in Amazona to set up a novel that behaves and in many ways simulates the typical narratives of feuilletonistic matrix, it is also possible to observe the incorporation into the fictional universe discursive instances from the cinematographic scope. The Seventh Art works on Amazona in order to influence much of the narrative organization, marking the construction of the narrator, characters, time and space and opening to the formation of a scripture that tends, in many aspects, to the filmic realization.
