Investigation of kites for auxiliary ship propulsion : experimental set-up, trials, data analysis and kite specs novel identification approach / Les kites comme propulsion axillaire pour les navires : système expérimental, campagnes de mesures, analyse des données et identification des performances des kites

Behrel, Morgan 15 December 2017 (has links)
This study is part of the research program beyond the sea® aiming to develop kites as auxiliary propulsion devices for ships. The goal is to use the energy of the wind to save fuel and reduce harmful emissions. Such a project needs numerous developments and scientific actions, particularly to model the behavior of giant kites and associated ships. However these models must be compared to measurements to assess their validity. This study is then focus on the measurements of the interaction between kites and ships, at a limited scale in comparison to the real scope of the project. Thus measurement campaigns were carried out on a 13-meter long trawler, and on a 6-meter long experimental platform specifically designed. Another experimental campaign was also carried out onshore to assess the aerodynamic specs of the kite. Each of these three campaigns was based on a complex experimental set-up, including an automatic kite control system. In addition to provide a valuable data set for further scientific analyses, this study provided also tools which can be used by the industrial partners of the beyond the sea project®.

Photocatalytic nanocomposites for degradation of organic pollutants in water under visible light

Malefane, Mope Edwin 11 1900 (has links)
Heterojunctions were generated between tungsten trioxide and tetraphenyl porphyrin with reduced graphene oxide or exfoliated graphite support for mineralisation of acid blue 25 dye under visible light radiation. Moreover, degradation of pharmaceuticals was conducted using p-n heterojunctions between WO3 and Co3O4 and a direct Z-scheme heterojunction between BiOI and Co3O4 prepared using in-situ method and solvothermal self-assembly method respectively. The synthesized materials were characterised using Raman, FTIR, SEM/EDS, TEM, XRD, TGA, BET, UV-Vis and PL techniques. UV-Vis, TOC and HPLC-QTOF-MS were used to study the degradation efficiency and pathway. Scavenger trapping experiments were conducted to propose the charge transfer mechanisms. The highest degradation efficiency (99 %) was achieved for the dye and the pharmaceuticals using visible light. The mineralisation ability of the fabricated nanomaterials was pH dependent with acidic conditions favouring the removal of the dye (pH 5) while alkaline conditions favoured the mineralisation of pharmaceuticals (pH 10 – 11). / Civil and Chemical Engineering

Lean Manufacturing: Setup Time Reduction in Secondary Wood Manufacturing Facilities in North America

Kucuk, Enis 28 June 2016 (has links)
Since the emergence and the subsequent evolution of lean manufacturing concepts, numerous enterprises of different scale and specialties have adopted lean tools and techniques in their facilities with varying success. In general, lean manufacturing related studies have been conducted on large manufacturing firms, such as the automotive industry. Yet, lean manufacturing tools and techniques are also suited for small enterprises. Thus, the main concern of this study is to investigate the success of set-up time reduction efforts (one of the steps needed to achieve 'one-piece flow') in secondary wood products manufacturing facilities on four woodworking machines (moulder, shaper, table saw, and band saw) based on firm size. The first objective of this research is to explore the results of the implementation of set-up time reduction efforts on selected woodworking machines in enterprises of varying size. It is assumed that company size is a major factor influencing the rate of set-up time improvements. To that end, the first hypothesis, which states that 'Small firms are less successful in reducing set-up time through set-up time reduction efforts than are large firms,' has been developed and supportive questions have been corresponding created. While statistical testing of the hypotheses created for this is not possible due to the limited number of participants, speculations about the possible outcome can be made. Thus, for hypothesis one, the data obtained does not show any sign of a relationship between a firm size and the success rate of set-up time reduction efforts. The second objective of this study is to investigate how a firm's productivity is affected by set-up time reduction efforts as related to firm size. With regards to some of the weaknesses of typical small manufacturing firms (e.g. having limited budget and resources, intuitive management strategies including lack of strategic planning), large firms, by and large, are expected to be more successful in increasing productivity through set-up time reduction. To that end, the goal is to investigate results of the set-up time reduction efforts in terms of productivity improvement in manufacturing facilities. With this in mind, the second hypothesis was proposed, which reads 'Small firms achieve lower productivity gains through set-up time reduction than do large firms.' For the second hypothesis, while no conclusive proof can be offered, no sign of a relationship between firm size and productivity gain through set-up time reduction could be found. Another objective of this study is to explore the success rate of set-up time activities on the four types of woodworking machines in industry facilities considering the training activities provided by manufacturers. The aim is to compare set-up time improvement performance of manufacturers between enterprises which trained their workers/operators and enterprises which did not train their employees. To understand the relationship between the scale of firms (and/or facilities) and training activities to improve set-ups, the third hypothesis, which reads 'Small firms are less concerned with set-up time reduction through training than are large firms,' has been developed. For the third hypothesis, while testing is not possible, it appears that there is no relationship between firm size and the level of concern for set-up time reduction through training activities. The final objective of this research is to investigate whether the secondary wood manufacturing firms studied experienced a bottleneck in their production due to the long set-up actions of machines. In order to accomplish this objective, the final hypothesis, 'In both, large and small firms, bottlenecks occur at machines with high set-up times,' has been developed. The final hypothesis cannot be accepted or rejected due to the limited number of responses obtained, set-up time was a frequently indicated explanation for the occurrence of production bottlenecks in secondary wood products manufacturing firms. / Master of Science

A study on the operation and development strategy of Taiwan 's banking in Mainland China

Chang, Chun Chih Unknown Date (has links)
Because of the Legislature amended the Act in November 2006, Taiwan’s Banking had been permitted and set up branches in mainland China since 2006. This paper analyzed the business strategy and performance of 39 Taiwanese banks in mainland China. The multiple regression models were adopted and we test the relationship between their business strategy and performance. The main results of this paper were as follows: First, whether the rate of return on assets (ROA) or return on equity (ROE) profitability indicators, there is no sufficient evidence that the Taiwan’s banks actively set in mainland China Branches and other positions of the business strategy or direction is feasible according to the other two test result. Second, as a result of the ROE analysis, it is significant to support the Taiwan’s banking industry to adopt the development strategy of setting up an entity base in mainland China, which has a significant positive effect on the ROE. Third, whether the return on assets (ROA) or the return on equity (ROE) as an explanatory variable, the results are unable to support that the the scale of Taiwan’s banking in mainland China have a relation with the ROE or ROA.

Caracterização estática e dinâmica de um banco experimental para estudo dos coeficientes dinâmicos de um mancal radial aerostático cerâmico poroso / Static and dynamic characterization of an experimental setup to study the dynamic coefficients of an aerostatic radial bearing porous ceramic

Chiarelli, Luis Renato 28 May 2014 (has links)
This work presents the numerical model of an experimental set-up where it was made an evaluation on the static characteristics of the shaft and the identification of the dynamic characteristics for an aerostatic radial porous bearing. In recent years, the use of the structural ceramic has grown significantly for design and manufacturing of mechanical parts. The use of ceramic porous as restrictor in aerostatic bearings can improve its perform related to the wear, thermal stability, stiffness and load capacity allowing that spindles work with precision at speed above 20.000 rpm with small clearances (40 microns). In order to investigate this kind of bearing were developed static analyses to obtain the stiffness of the support shaft, as well as aerostatic porous bearing and dynamic identification for experimental set-up. The static analysis indicated stiffness of shaft and aerostatic porous bearing of 20.1 kN/mm and 2.6 kN/mm, respectively. The dynamic analysis indicated that the first natural frequency of the rotor is close to 1365.9 Hz, which is much higher than the first natural frequency of the aerostatic ceramic porous bearing whose value is 775.0 Hz. One can conclude that geometrical configuration and support conditions choosen allow a robust condition to proceed in experimental tests to obtain dynamic characteristics of the porous bearing.
