Low cost on-line non-invasive sewer flow monitoringNichols, Andrew, Tait, Simon J., Horoshenkov, Kirill V., Shepherd, Simon J., Zhang, Y. January 2013 (has links)
A novel acoustic sensor has been developed, capable of remotely monitoring the free surface ‘fingerprint’ of shallow flows. Temporal and spatial properties of this pattern are shown to contain information regarding the nature of the flow itself. The remote measurement can thereby be used to infer the bulk flow properties such as depth, velocity, and the hydraulic roughness of the pipe. The instrument is non-invasive and is also low cost, low maintenance, and low power. Such a device will allow for widespread monitoring of flow conditions in drainage networks, enabling pro-active maintenance and reliable real-time control.

Smart Growth's Weak Link: An Analytical Evaluation of Water and Sewer Planning in MarylandWhipple, Michael D. 24 May 2000 (has links)
Established low-density land use development patterns are characterized by expansive urbanization of the landscape. Concurrent effects associated with this present development pattern are declining existing urbanized areas, increasing conversion of open space, and high public service and infrastructure costs. Maryland's adoption of the Smart Growth legislative initiatives marks a potential advancement in the continuing evolution of government policies and programs designed to reduce inefficiencies by planning and managing growth at the state level. The Smart Growth programs are designed to augment, and work in concert with, previously implemented state growth management strategies, including local water and sewer and comprehensive planning. Maryland's ability to effectively direct and control growth in a desirable manner depends on the integrity and support of each of these planning program elements.
This thesis recognizes the considerable influence that the provision of water and sewer services exerts on developing urban growth patterns and the increased relevance of water and sewer planning with respect to Smart Growth legislation. Evaluative research, designed to measure water and sewer plan regulatory conformance, demonstrates that locally adopted water and sewer plans exhibit widespread deficiencies in terms of state agency regulatory requirements. The revealed extent and prevalence of water and sewer plan inadequacies indicate that these documents are incapable of providing state administrators the information necessary to accurately determine existing and planned municipal sewer service, as anticipated by the legislation.
The fact that legislation requires state agency approval of water and sewer plans prior to their adoption and that adopted plans exhibit deficiencies suggests problems associated with the current plan approval process. This thesis reviews the institutional procedures by which water and sewer plans are developed and approved in order to illustrate formal and informal organizational processes operable to water and sewer plan development. In addition, this thesis offers recommendations designed to enhance the current approval process, so as to lead to the development of effective water and sewer plans and facilitate successful implementation of related Smart Growth programs. / Master of Urban and Regional Planning

A multi-objective approach to incorporate indirect costs into optimisation models of waterborne sewer systemsBester, Albertus J. 03 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MScEng (Civil Engineering))--University of Stellenbosch, 2011. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Waterborne sewage system design and expansion objectives are often focused on
minimising initial investment while increasing system capacity and meeting
hydraulic requirements. Although these objectives make good sense in the short
term, the solutions obtained might not represent the optimal cost-effective
solution to the complete useful life of the system. Maintenance and operation of
any system can have a significant impact on the life-cycle cost. The costing
process needs to be better understood, which include maintenance and operation
criteria in the design of a sewer system. Together with increasing public
awareness regarding global warming and environmental degradation,
environmental impact, or carbon cost, is also an important factor in decisionmaking
for municipal authorities. This results in a multiplicity of different
objectives, which can complicate the decisions faced by waterborne sewage
utilities.
Human settlement and migration is seen as the starting point of expansion
problems. An investigation was conducted into the current growth prediction
models for municipal areas in order to determine their impact on future planning
and to assess similarities between the models available. This information was used
as a platform to develop a new method incorporating indirect costs into models
for planning waterborne sewage systems.
The need to balance competing objectives such as minimum cost, optimal
reliability, and minimum environmental impact was identified. Different models
were developed to define the necessary criteria, thus minimising initial
investment, operating cost and environmental impact, while meeting hydraulic
constraints. A non-dominated sorting genetic algorithm (NSGA-II) was applied to
certain waterborne sewage system (WSS) scenarios that simulated the
evolutionary processes of genetic selection, crossover, and mutation to find a
number of suitable solutions that balance all of the given objectives. Stakeholders
could in future apply optimisation results derived in this thesis in the decision making process to find a solution that best fits their concerns and priorities.
Different models for each of the above-mentioned objectives were installed into a
multi-objective NSGA and applied to a hypothetical baseline sewer system
problem. The results show that the triple-objective optimisation approach supplies
the best solution to the problem. This approach is currently not applied in practice
due to its inherent complexities. However, in the future this approach may become
the norm.

PREFERENTIAL PATHWAYS FOR VAPOR INTRUSION: SITE SCREENING AND FIELD SAMPLING OF SEWERS TO ASSESS INHALATION EXPOSURE RISKSWillett, Evan James 01 January 2018 (has links)
Hazardous waste sites and aging wastewater infrastructure are common in the United States. There are hundreds of thousands of contaminated sites and more than a million miles of sewer pipes. Populations living close to hazardous waste sites often suffer from increased risk of adverse health effects due to exposure to contaminated environmental media. Vapor intrusion is one process by which nearby populations can be exposed to volatile organic compounds (VOCs). Aging wastewater infrastructure is important for vapor intrusion site assessments because sewer pipes can serve as preferential vapor transport pathways. Near contaminated sites, pipe deterioration allows migration of contaminants into sewers and potential accumulation of chemical vapors in sewer gas and nearby buildings. The objectives of this study are to develop a screening-level method to identify contaminated sites where additional evaluation of vapor intrusion is necessary, and then conduct field sampling at these sites to investigate sewers as potential vapor intrusion pathways. Sampling was conducted at four study sites, which consist of former and current dry cleaning facilities located in Lexington, Kentucky. The results of this study demonstrate that preferential vapor intrusion pathways such as sewers can facilitate the spread of vapor intrusion exposure risks beyond source areas of contamination.

Wastewater and contaminants dynamic in CDAPP (Pau urban community) sewer systemBersinger, Thomas 10 December 2013 (has links)
Optimization of sewer system and reduction of untreated wastewater discharges has become a key issue for many communities in order to achieve the good quality of aquatic environments set by the European Framework Directive (WFD 2000/60/EC). For this, a perfect knowledge of sanitation is required. The objective of this thesis, funded by CDAPP and Adour Garonne Water Agency, was the study of the dynamics of the CDAPP sanitation and its contribution to the pollutants fluxes in the receiving environment (the river Gave de Pau). The first step of the work was devoted to the hydraulic and physicochemical wastewater characterization during dry and wet weather. A hydraulic study was first carried and helped to better understand the dynamics of discharges through the combined sewer overflow (CSO) according to the rainfall events characteristics. On the other hand, the physico-chemical characterization of wastewater (suspended solids or TSS, chemical oxygen demand or COD, metals, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons) showed that for all these parameters, a clear increase of pollutant fluxes was observed at the beginning of the rainfall event (increase by a factor of 2 to 10). This phenomenon is explained by the runoff contribution and erosion of sediments accumulated in the networks during dry weather periods. Only total nitrogen behaves differently because it’s mostly dissolved. To better understand the dynamics of pollutants parameters (TSS, COD and nitrogen), high frequency monitoring (every five minutes) has been established for one year with turbidity and conductivity sensors. This continuous monitoring is the third part of this work. Correlation functions (r² ≈ 0.9) were found between, the pollutant parameters COD and TSS, and turbidity, and secondly, between conductivity and total nitrogen. These records allowed a better understanding of sanitation system: highlighting the first flush phenomenon, estimation of pollutant loads discharged by CSO, study of storage networks phenomenon. The last part of this thesis aims to study the contribution of wastewater discharges to the receiving environment. It demonstrated the moderate contribution of rejection output STEP (between 1% and 15%) in dry weather. In rainy weather, the contribution of sanitation through CSO is extremely variable depending on the hydro-climatic conditions (<1% to over than 50%). This work has led to provide usable results for the sanitation manager to optimize CDAPP wastewater treatment. Moreover, this work provides most fundamental results for a better understanding of the hydrological and physicochemical dynamics of urban wastewater and associated pollutants such as highlighting, using statistical tools, the parameters influencing pollutant concentrations during rainfall events.

Assessment of sewer leakage by means of exfiltration measurements and modelling testsRutsch, Mandy 04 April 2007 (has links) (PDF)
The main goal of this dissertation is a comprehensive evaluation of exfiltration from leaky sewer pipes. Therefore, several methods for determining exfiltration are thoroughly described and two approaches are considered for extensive real sewer network testing in order to evaluate their application potential. These two methods estimate sewage loss by a tracer mass balance over a certain sewer distance. Exfiltration rates were estimated in 26 pipes located in 5 homogeneous subcatchments in Berlin and Dresden. Consequently analysing the experiences gained during the conducted measuring campaign, requirements on measurements in sewers in general and experimental design of the tracer tests in particular are discussed. A second focus was on modelling of sewer leakage and sewer deterioration. Variables which have significant effects on sewer leakage and deterioration have been identified according to the literature review and available data. Modelling approaches were proposed on the basis of (i) Darcy’s law and (ii) regression models for both data on sewer leakage derived from literature/tracer tests conducted within this work and data on sewer deterioration for the Dresden sewerage system. The dissertation concludes with a discussion on the relevance of sewer exfiltration, in particular its pollution potential for the environment is evaluated.

Growing urbanization and related anthropogenic processes have a high potential to influencehydrological process dynamics. Typical consequences are an increase of surface imperviousnessand modifications of water flow paths due to artificial channels and barriers (combined and separatedsystem, sewer overflow device, roads, ditches, etc.). Periurban catchments, at the edgeof large cities, are especially affected by fast anthropogenic modifications. They usually consistof a combination of natural areas, rural areas with dispersed settlements and urban areas mostlycovered by built zones and spots of natural surfaces. Spatialized hydrological modeling tools, simulatingthe entire hydrological cycle and able to take into account the important heterogeneityof periurban watersheds can be used to assess the impact of stormwater management practiceson their hydrology. We propose a new modeling tool for these issues : the hourly distributed J2000P model. This model simulates the hydrological processes in rural and urban areas and takes into accountthe sewerage networks, connections to these networks and overflows from sewer overflow devices(SOD). The application site is the Yzeron catchment (˜ 130 km2), located in the West of Lyon. The evaluation, conducted at the outlet of different sub-basins with different sizes and landuse, shows very encouraging results. The model tends to underestimate the discharge but thedynamics of the peaks and the SOD overflows are well simulated. The model is also used to testthe impact of changes in land use and/or stormwater management on the hydrological response. The results show that land use management has less impact on the hydrology of the catchmentthan stormwater management.

[en] CASE STUDY OF SEPARATE SEWER SYSTEM IMPLANTATION IN SUB-BASINS OF MARANGÁ SYSTEM, RIO DE JANEIRO MUNICIPALITY, FROM AN ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH PERSPECTIVE / [pt] ESTUDO DE CASO DA IMPLANTAÇÃO DO SISTEMA SEPARADOR ABSOLUTO DE ESGOTO EM SUB-BACIAS DO SISTEMA MARANGÁ, MUNICÍPIO DO RIO DE JANEIRO, SOB UMA PERSPECTIVA DE SAÚDE AMBIENTALANA CAROLINA BRASIL SILVEIRA 14 January 2019 (has links)
[en] Predominantly, sanitation interventions are only implemented as barriers between environment and systems that involve human being (Nuvolari, 2013). These must be given in an ecological way and the lack of attention to this aspect, in addition to problems related to limitation of natural resources generation, damages health and quality of life (Rosso and Dias, 2011). Implementation of sanitation systems, more specifically of sanitary sewage, requires engineering exercise to understand the problem and proposition of technical alternatives. Separate system, as an exclusive system for sanitary sewage collection in separation from rainwater, is legally recognized by the State of Rio de Janeiro as an ideal technique. However, changes in local reality reflect the need to review techniques adopted to ensure durable and sustainable solutions (Rosso and Dias, 2012). Understanding the relationship between sanitation and public health is also central to guide effective services. From the twentieth century, several endemic and epidemic diseases were reduced and eradicated in Brazil as a consequence of sanitary improvements implantation. However, diseases related to precarious population conditions continue to play a significant role in national morbidity and mortality (Funasa, 2010). Foregoing highlights the importance of health-sanitation relationship not only as an epidemiological indicator, but with a broader sense of health that involves social well-being and quality of life. Therefore, it is extremely important to evaluate sanitary sewage services implementation in health and environment perspective, i.e., environmental health.
