Instabilités hydrodynamiques de fluides magnétiques en écoulements microfluidiques / Hydrodynamic instabilities in microfluidic magnetic fluid flows

Kitenbergs, Guntars 16 July 2015 (has links)
Magnetic field induced instabilities of magnetic fluids in microfluidic environment are investigated experimentally. Electrically stabilized water-based magnetic nanocolloids are used and throughout characterized.Magnetic micro-convection, observed at a miscible magnetic fluid-water interface in a Hele-Shaw cell in homogeneous field, is studied quantitatively and compared with theoretical predictions and numerical simulations, micro-convective flows being characterized by particle image velocimetry. Besides the critical field determination, it is shown that an increase of the magnetic field H speeds up the finger growth, which scales as H2, while the size of the fingering pattern is not changed. An application towards mixing enhancement in microfluidics is considered. The micro-convection study reveals a much larger effective diffusion coefficient of the nanoparticles than expected from Stokes - Einstein relation and standard determinations. Investigations with the same setup and with continuous microfluidics show that the effective diffusion mostly arises from a flow induced by the density difference between the miscible fluids. Additionally, the diffusion coefficient seems to be influenced by the particle stabilizing agents.Drops of a concentrated magnetic phase in co-existence with a dilute one are formed by phase separation after salt addition to the magnetic fluid and/or the application of a magnetic field. Their under-field shape deformations allow investigating the time evolution of the concentrated phase. Experiments show that in a precessing field at magic angle, the drops behave as in a rotating field except the initial shape deformation before quick elongation.

The skin is one of the largest organs of the human body and accounts for about 16% of body weight. The body protection against the external environment microorganisms is one of its most important functions, however is necessary that the skin remain intact for this function be exercised, so that when there is an injury on the skin, the process of restructuring needs to be starts, however this restructuration may also be compromised due to some diseases, justifying even more the need for the development of topical products that promote or accelerate the skin healing. Thus the aim of this study was to extract bullfrog oil and to develop a suitable topical emulsion. Two different oil samples were extracted by hot or organic solvent process. Titration techniques and gas chromatography- mass spectrometry were used to characterize the bullfrog oil. The required hydrophile-lipophile balance (HLBr) of bullfrog oil was determined and a pseudo-ternary phase diagram was constructed. The stability of the topical emulsion was evaluated. Then, cellular viability was determined by MTT assay using normal fibroblasts (3T3) and melanoma (B16F10) cells lines. The hot extraction yield was 60.6%. The major polyunsaturated compounds found were Eicosapentaenoic acid (17.6%) and Arachidonic acid (8.4%). HLBr study demonstrated the presence of stable systems with HLB ranging from 12.1 to 13.5 and the pseudo-ternary phase diagram showed mainly emulsion systems (62%). Topical emulsion showed 390 nm, polydispersity 0.05, zeta potential -25 mV and remained stable for ninety days. The bullfrog oil and topical emulsion did not showed citotoxicity in normal fibroblasts cells. However, these systems showed significantly inhibition of melanoma cells growth. In conclusion, the bullfrog oil presented desirable chemical characteristics required to be used for the development of a pharmaceutical and cosmetic products.

A study of certain aspects of the Mount Coke Missionary Institution

Walker, James Andrew January 1955 (has links)
In searching for information concerning the chain of stations that William Shaw established from the Eastern Frontier of the Cape Colony towards Natal, I found that I had to consult many books. Many sources of information have recently come to light and this had to be analysed as well. In this work much had to be included that did not directly refer to Mount Coke, but it is relevant in that it affected the history of the Mission, and the effect of the Mission on the community as a whole. When histories of all the stations are written the incidents should show up in the right perspective.

Female Agency in Restoration and Nineteenth-Century Drama

Anderson, Haley D 01 July 2010 (has links)
This thesis examines issues of female agency in the plays The Rover and The Widow Ranter by Aphra Behn, Mrs. Warren's Profession by George Bernard Shaw, and Votes for Women! by Elizabeth Robins. The heroines of each of these plays work toward gaining agency for themselves, and in order to achieve this goal, they often stray from cultural norms of femininity and encroach on the masculine world. This thesis postulates that agency for women becomes a fluid notion, not statically defined. These plays show a fluctuating and evolving sense of feminine agency.
