Mathematical Analysis of Forced Convective Flow Due to Stretching Sheet and Instabilities of Natural Convective FlowMetri, Prashant G January 2017 (has links)
The investigations presented in the thesis are theoretical studies of magnetohydrodynamic flows, heat and mass transfer in Newtonian/non-Newtonian cooling liquids, due to horizontal/vertical stretching sheet. The theoretical studies include the effect of magnetic field, uniform and non-uniform heat source/sink (flow and temperature dependent heat source/sink) effects. The considered problems include flow of viscous fluids in the presence of applied magnetic field and electric field with first order chemical reactions. The viscous incompressible Newtonian fluid flow in porous medium with Darcy-Forchheimmer model, electrically conducting fluid and nanofluid is studied. We introduce innovative techniques for finding solutions of highly nonlinear coupled boundary value problems such as Runge-Kutta method, Perturbation method and Differential Transform Method (DTM). Chapter 1-2 gives a brief introduction. Chapter 3 focuses on Lie group analysis of MHD flow and heat transfer over a stretching sheet. The effects of viscous dissipation, uniform heat source/sink and MHD on heat transfer are addressed. In Chapter 4-6 we examined the laminar flow, thermocapillary flow of a nanoliquid thin film over an unsteady stretching sheet in presence of MHD and thermal Radiation in different situations. An effective medium theory (EMT) based model is used for the thermal conductivity of the nanoliquid. Metal and metal oxide nanoparticles are considered in carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) - water base liquid. In Chapter 7-9 we analyzed, heat and mass transfer in MHD, mixed convection, viscoelastic fluid flow, non-Darcian flow due to stretching sheet in presence of viscous dissipation, non-uniform heat source/sink and porous media have been investigated in different situations. MHD and viscous dissipation have a significant influence on controlling of the dynamics. In Chapter 10 the linear stability of Maxwell fluid-nanofluid flow in a saturated porous layer is examined theoretically when the walls of the porous layers are subjected to time-periodic temperature modulations. A modified Darcy-Maxwell model is used to describe the fluid motion, and the nanofluid model used includes the effects of the Brownian motion. The thermal conductivity and viscosity are considered to be dependent on the nanoparticle volume fraction. In Chapter 11 we studied MHD flow in a vertical double passage channel taking into account the presence of the first order chemical reactions. The governing equations are solved by using a regular perturbation technique valid for small values of the Brinkman number and a DTM valid for all values of the Brinkman number.

Seismic Retrofit of Load Bearing Masonry Walls with Surface Bonded FRP SheetsArifuzzaman, Shah January 2013 (has links)
A large inventory of low rise masonry buildings in Canada and elsewhere in the world were built using unreinforced or partially reinforced load bearing wall. The majority of existing masonry structures is deficient in resisting seismic force demands specified in current building codes. Therefore, they pose significant risk to life safety and economic wellbeing of any major metropolitan centre. Because it is not economically feasible to replace the existing substandard buildings with new and improved structures, seismic retrofitting remains to be an economically viable option.
The effectiveness of surface bonded carbon fiber-reinforced polymer (CFRP) sheets in retrofitting low-rise load bearing masonry walls was investigated in the current research project. The retrofit technique included the enhancements in wall capacity in shear and flexure, as well as anchoring the walls to the supporting elements through appropriate anchorage systems. Both FRP fan type anchors and steel sheet anchors were investigated for elastic and inelastic wall response. One partially reinforced masonry (PRM) wall and one unreinforced masonry (URM) wall were built, instrumented and tested under simulated seismic loading to develop the retrofit technique. The walls were retrofitted with CFRP sheets applied only on one side to represent a frequently encountered constraint in practice. FRP fan anchors and stainless steel sheet anchors were used to connect the vertical FRP sheets to the wall foundation. The walls were tested under constant gravity load and incrementally increasing in-plane deformation reversals. The lateral load capacities of both walls were enhanced significantly. The steel sheet anchors also resulted in some ductility. In addition, some small-scale tests were performed to select appropriate anchor materials. It was concluded that ductile stainless steel sheet anchors would be the best option for brittle URM walls.
Analytical research was conducted to assess the applicability of truss analogy to retrofitted walls. An analytical model was developed and load displacement relationships were generated for the two walls that were retrofitted. The analytical results were compared with those obtained experimentally, indicating good agreement in force resistance for use as a design tool.

The thin sheet steels, coated or not, has been widely used nowadays, mainly the hot dip galvanized steel sheets. It\'s observed as in the mechanic and automobilist industry as in the civil construction that in manufacturing of pieces and structures employ welding procedures. The aim of this work is to establish procedures to gas metal are welding with short circuit transfer of thin sheet steel elements, not coated and zinc-coated steel, in order to get junctions of acceptance quality and reduction of welding stress and distortion. This distortion arise of the thermal cycles that occur during the welding. In terms of the weld quality is defined the best consumables combination available in the market, in such a way to reduce the weld defects like porosities, spatters, cracks and loss of covering. To galvanized steel sheets, the combination: wire ER70S-3 and mixture 8%CO2 + 92% Ar showed the best performance. Three techniques were employed for control and reduce the welding distortion. One that using a spot heat sink following the arc, in this case the cooling jet, was more efficient that others techniques.

Determining the Timing and Rate of Southeastern Laurentide Ice Sheet Thinning During the Last Deglaciation with 10Be DipsticksHalsted, Christopher T. January 2018 (has links)
Thesis advisor: Jeremy D. Shakun / The deglacial extent chronology of the southeastern Laurentide Ice Sheet as it retreated through the northeastern United States and southern Quebec has been well constrained by multiple lines of evidence. By comparison, few data exist to constrain the thinning history of the southeastern Laurentide, resulting in lingering uncertainty about volume changes and dynamics of this ice mass during the deglacial period. To address the lack of thinning information, my team collected 120 samples for in-situ `10Be exposure dating from various elevations at numerous mountains in New England and southern Quebec. Monte Carlo regression analyses using the analytical uncertainties of exposure ages from each mountain are used to determine the most-likely timing and rate of ice thinning for that location, a technique known as the ‘dipstick approach’. While this larger project is ongoing, I have processed and measured 10Be concentrations of 42 samples for this thesis and present my preliminary results and interpretation here. Exposure ages from Peekamoose Mt. in southern NY suggest ice thinning early in the deglacial period (~19.5 – 17.5 ka), near the onset of the Heinrich Stadial I cold period. Samples from Franconia Notch, NH, and Mt. Mansfield, VT, suggest ice thinning from approximately 15 – 13 ka in northern New England, roughly coincident with the Bølling-Allerød warm period. Exposure ages from each of the northern New England dipsticks are nearly identical within 1σ internal uncertainty, indicating that ice thinning was rapid. Higher elevation (>1200 m a.s.l.) samples from the northern New England mountains appear to contain inherited 10Be from previous periods of exposure, indicating a lack of glacial erosion on these surfaces. My high-elevation samples with inherited 10Be suggest that these summit landscapes were preserved beneath cold-based, non-erosive ice during the last glacial and deglacial periods. 40 samples that have yet to be processed will provide more information on ice thinning around Killington Mt., VT, Mt. Greylock, MA, Mt. Bigelow, ME, and Mt. Jacques-Cartier, Quebec. Ultimately, this information will be used to create probabilistic reconstructions of the lowering southeastern Laurentide ice surface during its retreat. / Thesis (MS) — Boston College, 2018. / Submitted to: Boston College.
