O ir-remediável da invenção autobiográfica: desdobramentos do eu na escrita de Caio Fernando Abreu / "The on going recover of the autobiographical invention: reveiling the self in Caio Fernando Abreu

José Roberto Silveira 19 March 2013 (has links)
This study is about the ways and devices of the construction of subjectivity in autobiographical genres and fictional texts, investigating how it is the writing about the self. From plain autobiographical texts by Caio Fernando Abreu such as letters, we go to tenuous forms such as the essays and short stories, which intertwine fiction and subjectivity, experience and invention. This way, we studied how the subject becomes the center of events and starts writing about what affects his mind, body, feelings and thoughts, either in a real or objective report of events or in a "embellishment of what was lived and invented. The intention is to explore, in Caio Fernando Abreus biographical and literary spaces, the intertwining of life and writing, and the possibilities of writing himself in his letters, organized by Italo Moriconi, in Cartas (2002), in the compilation of essays Pequenas Epifanias (2006), and in the short stories in Ovelhas Negras (1995)

Cardoso, Patrícia Alves January 2008 (has links)
Abstract: This research aims to analyze the intensification of the rhetorical investments, mainly the ellipsis, in the meaning constructions in Machado de Assis' short stories. We believe that through this temporal source the author is able to transcend the classic structure of short stories, principally from the ambiguity of his texts, since this technique alters the expected process of the intrigue refiguration. In order to verify the hypothesis of the works we analyzed all the forty three short stories from Machado de Assis' first four books (from Contos Fluminenses to Histórias sem data). From the analysis, it was noticed that as well as the ellipsis, resources as irony, humor and allegory had their use reinforced, which improved Machadian texts in relation to the ambiguity construction. We also verified that the ellipsis had its climax in Histórias sem data (1884). This study is composed by five chapters. The first one provides an outlook through the traditional criticism of Assis and the others deal with each one of the short stories books, obeying the chronological order of their publication. Each chapter has its own conclusion which will be the basis for the final conclusion, outcome of the relation between the obtained results in this trajectory. Therefore, in addition to the study of the corpus we reflected upon the critical fortune and we used the required theories to investigate, mostly, the narrative speed, verifying the path from the explicit to the implicit based on the use of the ellipsis and other meaning generators mechanisms. / Doutor

The Hills Remember: The Complete Short Stories of James Still (Edited Volume, with New Introductory Essay)

Olson, Ted, Still, James 01 January 2012 (has links)
James Still remains one of the most beloved and important writers in Appalachian literature. Best known for his acclaimed novel River of Earth (1940), the Alabama native and adopted Kentuckian left an enduring legacy of novels, stories, and poems during his nearly seventy year career. The Hills Remember: The Complete Short Stories of James Stillhonors the late writer by collecting all of Still's short stories, including his stories from On Troublesome Creek (1941), Pattern of a Man and Other Stories (1976), and The Run for the Elbertas(1980), as well as twelve prose pieces originally published as short stories and later incorporated into River of Earth. Also included are several lesser-known stories and ten never-before-published stories. Recognized as a significant writer of short fiction in his day―many of his stories initially appeared in The Atlantic and The Saturday Evening Post and were included in The O. Henry Memorial Award Stories and The Best American Short Stories collections―Still's short stories, while often overshadowed in recent years by his novels and poetry, are among his most enduring literary works. Editor Ted Olson offers a reassessment of Still's short fiction within the contexts of the author's body of work and within Appalachian and American literature. Compiling all of James Still's compelling and varied short stories into one volume, The Hills Remember is a testament to a master writer. / https://dc.etsu.edu/etsu_books/1166/thumbnail.jpg

CAPE FEAR STORIES

Kabrick-Arneson, Evan C. 01 January 2018 (has links)
The following work is a collection of short stories, each of which is set in Southeastern North Carolina in a particular medium-sized town. The stories are concerned with the idea of place and with what it is like to have lived all of one’s life in one setting. Thus, the characters here range from childhood to old age, they are from various social classes, and they occupy varying roles in both traditional and non-traditional families. The concern of this collection is how people of all stripes occupy a single place for generations, and more specifically what the nature of community is.

ME WITHOUT YOU

Bracken, Michelle 01 June 2015 (has links)
ME WITHOUT YOU is an interlinked collection of short stories set in the blight of an urban housing project in San Bernardino, California. The stories follow the lives of three students in their year of fourth grade at a low performing school. Narrated from these points of view, the collection amplifies the voices of a community wrought with violence, poverty, and crime while also exploring how children brave the consequences of a world they cannot control. Mesmerizing in its simplicity, and gripping in its detail, ME WITHOUT YOU intertwines themes of identity, family, loss, poverty, and longing for what is just out of reach. It begs the reader to question how one survives a world of violence and disillusionment. The story behind my stories is this: in my nine years in San Bernardino, I have learned that it isn’t just the origin of one’s story that matters, but what one does with it. In this way, ME WITHOUT YOU tells the stories of this region, the dreams of its children, and the journeys they navigate in order to survive.

The Edge of the World, and Other Stories

Ukani, Amreen 01 January 2011 (has links)
The six short stories in this collection explore the lives and desires of disparate women. In "Sentinel," a woman visits an ex-boyfriend, injured in the army, and his family, with whom she has a fraught relationship, in their vacation home. A diagnosis of cancer spurs a woman to change her life in "Cell Division"; when a new possibility for treatment arises, she reconsiders the choice she made to take her life apart. In the story, "A Wake," a funeral and an unexpected pregnancy set the stage for the breakdown of a couple's relationship. In "A Cyclic Process," a woman conflates her ambivalence toward the anti-depressants she takes with her feelings about her relationship; in the end, she cannot let go of either. A woman, traveling with a new acquaintance, takes a trip to Venice in "The Edge of the World," and falls into an unsettling relationship with a man she meets there. The process of protein denaturation serves as a metaphor in "Marina," for the unraveling of a friendship between two teenage girls.
