The Confusion Doctrine; Establishing Swedish compliance with EU Law

As a response to trade marks’ enhanced importance within trade, the EU’s interest in the area has increased by proponing a harmonization of the member states’ trade mark pro-tection so far as needed to preserve the EU’s objective of an internal market. The area is therefore regulated by an EU Directive, however allowing some national discretion. The purpose of this study was to investigate if a specific part of the trade mark protec-tion, the assessment-based confusion doctrine, corresponds on a Swedish and EU level. The aim was to locate statutory discrepancies in order to stimulate further review of the practical application of the doctrine from the analytical perspective of legal certainty. A scientifically accepted and traditional legal research method was applied when ex-amining and interpreting the sources of law. In addition, a comparative study was con-ducted between the two investigated legal systems to achieve the overall purpose. When comparing the results from the investigated sources, the legislations present a sta-tutory diversity, opening up for practical discrepancies. So was also the case with the application at the early stage of national implementation of the EU Directive. The tradi-tional national confusion doctrine, prescribing a more legal-technical assessment, did not correspond to the more flexible and contemporary EU view. Consequently, some national courts had to endure criticism for not adjusting to the EU development. Later case law however presents a very positive transition to the EU view of the confu-sion doctrine, suggesting a partial abandonment of the national legal sources of law for the benefit of EU law. Conclusion was however that despite this practical transition to EU law, statutory changes are necessary in order to safeguard the legal certainty in the way of achieving predictability.

Challenges and opportunities/possibilities of implementing the Western Cape language policy

<p>The principle aim of this thesis is to investigate all the challenges and opportunities/possibilities involved in realising the implementation of the official Western Cape Language Policy (finalised in 2002). These challenges and opportunities/possibilities were investigated within various structures of the Western Cape Province of South Africa&rsquo / s civil service environment in six major multilingual towns in the Western Cape. The historical and political context leading to the creation of this policy is provided in the following three paragraphs. Following the demise of Apartheid with South Africa&rsquo / s first democratic elections in 1994, the New South Africa brought with it amongst other things the following changes: a new Constitution / new legislation / access and freedom within a system of inclusion / the creation of new provinces / the constitutional breakdown of social, geographical and linguistic barriers / the subsequent migration to different towns and cities of people speaking different languages and their integration there / the creation of district and regional municipalities / freedom of the press. All of these introduced a whole new platform of language interaction and association and therefore general communication (Constitution of the RSA, 1996). In addition, in contrast to the Apartheid policy of only two official languages &ndash / English and Afrikaans &ndash / eleven languages were declared official languages of the state. The declaration of 11 official languages in 1996 (English, Afrikaans, isiZulu, isiXhosa, Sesotho, Sepedi, Setswana, Tshivenda, isiNdebele, siSwati and Xitsonga) was an integral part of highlighting multilingualism in the newly designated nine provinces of SA. Each of the nine provinces &ndash / the Western Cape, Eastern Cape, Northern Cape, Gauteng, the Northwest Province, Northern Province (now called Limpopo), Mpumalanga, the Free State and Kwazulu-Natal - had to, in consultation with different provincial stakeholders, draft language policies according to the National Language Framework. In the Western Cape Province, three languages were identified as dominant, namely Afrikaans, isiXhosa and English. The Western Cape Language Policy (WCLP) was consequently drafted by the Western Cape Language Committee (WCLC), a statutory body and a sub-committee of the Pan South African Language Board (PanSALB), after the Westen Cape Provincial Languages Act, Act 31 of 1998, was accepted by Parliament in 1998. This WCLP was the first provincial language policy to be completed in the New SA. The policy was accepted and the draft was ready for implementation by 2002. This thesis presents a critical overview of previous and current strategies being used by all provincial government departments in the implementation of the WCLP. This includes a sample of general public knowledge of the existence of the terms and meaning of the WCLP, different outcomes of studies and language-related projects done by the WCLC, PanSALB, DCAS and the Central Language Unit (CLU) since 2000. It also focuses on the role that different private and public language implementation agencies are playing, or not, in their communication with the multilingual civil society of the Western Cape. Projections for and challenges facing the implementation of the WCLP since its acceptance in the Western Cape Provincial Parliament (WCPP) in 2004 were also researched carefully, together with an analysis of research already conducted on behalf of the provincial government. Document analysis therefore forms a core part of this methodology, together with fieldwork research conducted in six selected major multilingual towns of the Western Cape. This was done in order to explore the challenges experienced by Afrikaans-, isiXhosa- and English-speaking people at grassroots level, since they needed to become more aware of their language rights as set out in the WCLP. Drawing on a theoretical and conceptual framework based on studies in Language and Power Relations, specifically studies on the role of Language Ideologies, Linguistic Citizenship, Agency and Voice and Language Ecology on effective Language Planning, Policy and Implementation, the thesis presents, through its document analysis, quantitative and qualitative data, an analysis of the limited or failed implementation of the WCLP in both government departments as well as the civilian populations in six selected multilingual towns of the Western Cape. This was achieved by examining actual language practices at particular language policy implementation agencies such as the post office, the police station, the high school, households, the municipal office, the day hospital and the clinic in each of these towns. The thesis gathers together all this evidence to prove that the implementation of the WCLP has been hampered by a range of factors such as wide-spread ignorance of the policy, the dominance of particular languages in the province over others, power relations within government structures and relatively inflexible language ideologies held by those charged with policy implementation at different levels. It concludes by providing a number of practical recommendations on how more effective implementation can be achieved.</p>

Web Based Automatic Tool Path Planning Strategy for Complex Sculptured Surfaces

Over the past few years, manufacturing companies have had to deal with an increasing demand for feature-rich products at low costs. The pressures exerted on their existing manufacturing processes have lead manufacturers to investigate internet-based solutions, in order to cope with growing competition. Today, the availability of powerful and low cost 3D tools, along with web-based technologies, provides interesting opportunities to the manufacturing community, with solutions directly implementable at the core of their businesses and organizations. The wooden sign is custom i.e. each sign is completely different from each other. Mass Customization is a paradigm that produces custom products in masses. A wooden sign is custom in nature, and each sign must be completely different from another. Although process planning for mass customized products is same, the tool path required to CNC machine the custom feature varies from part to part. If the tool path is created manually the economics of mass production are challenged. The only viable option is to generate the tool path automatically; furthermore, any time savings in the tool path lead to better profit margins. This thesis presents the automatic web-based tool path planning method for machining sculptured wooden sign on 3 axis Computer Numerical Controlling (CNC) Machines using optimal and cost-effective milling cutters. The web-based tool path planning strategy is integrate with web-based CAD system to automatically generate tool paths for the CAD model using optimal cutter within desired tolerances. The tool path planning method is divided into two parts: foot print (path along which cutter moves) and cutter positioning. The tool path foot print is developed during design stage from the CAD model based on the type of surface to be machined. The foot print varies from part to part which facilitates the mass customization of wooden sign. After designing foot print, the foot print is discretized into points and the gouge-free cutter position at each of these points is found using "Dropping Method". The Dropping Method where cutter is dropped over the work piece surface, and the highest depth at which cutter can go without gouging the surface is calculated. This is repeated for all the position along the foot print. This tool path planning strategy is developed for ball nose, flat-end and radiused end milling cutter for machining wooden sign. The tool path generated using this method is optimized for machining time, tool path generation time and final surface finish. The bucketing technique is developed to optimize tool path generation time, by isolating the triangles which has possibility of intersection at particular position. The bucketing Technique reduced the tool path computation by 75 %, and made tool path generation faster. The optimal cutter selection algorithm is developed which selects best cutter for machining the surface based on the scallop height and volume removal results. The radiused end milling cutter results in highest volume removal which results in lower machining time compared to ball nose end milling cutters, but the scallop heights is higher. However, the scallop height in the radiused end milling cutter is higher only in few regions which reduces the final surface finish. For a sign, it was found around the boundary of logo, outline of lettering, interface of border and background. Thus, in order to achieve higher surface finish and lower machining time, a separate tool path is developed using "Pencil Milling Technique" which will remove the scallops from the regions that was inaccessible by radiused end mills. This tool path with the smaller cutter will move around the boundary of logo and lettering, and clean-up all the scallops left on the surface. The designed tool path for all the three cutters were tested on maple wood and verified against the actual Computer Aided Design model for scallop height and surface finish. The numerical testing of tool path was carried out on a Custom Simulator, ToolSim and was later confirmed by actually machining on a 3 axis CNC machine. The same sign was machined with variety of milling cutters and the best cutter was selected based on the minimum scallop and maximum volume removal. The results of the experimental verification show the method to be accurate for machining sculptured sign. The average scallop height in a machined using 1/8 th inch radiused end milling cuter and using Pencil tool path on the machined surface is found to be 0.03989 mm (1.5708 thou).

The minimum rank mr(A)(maximum rank MR(A)) of a sign pattern matrix A is the minimum (maximum) of the ranks of the real matrices in Q(A). Several results concerning sign patterns A that require almost unique rank, that is to say, the sign patterns A such that MR(A)= mr(A)+1 are established. In particular, a complete characterization of these sign patterns is obtained. Further, the results on sign patterns that require almost unique rank are extended to sign patterns A for which the spread is d =MR(A)-mr(A).

An analysis of learning barriers among deaf learners in the structured workplace component of a learnership programme.

<p>In this research paper, guided by Prof Z Groener, I explore the learning barriers experienced by deaf learners in the structured workplace component of a learnership programme. I focus on the learning barriers of deaf learners at work on an Information Technology learnership where the learning environment shapes and are shaped by deaf learners. Twenty deaf learners have entered during 2005 into an Information Technology: Technical Support NQF4 learnership, funded by the Information Systems (IT), Electronics and Telecommunications Technologies Sector Education Training Authority (ISETT Seta). I have determined how deaf learners are faring with work and learning in a technological environment that has experienced rapid and extensive restructuring during the past ten years. The specific difficulties which they experience during their structured workplace component of the learnerships have also been defined. I argue that when deaf learners form part of a community of practice, consisting of both deaf learners and hearing colleagues and who operate in the same area of knowledge and activity, they fare better than those who did not form part of such a community. I conclude this research paper with a link to the situated learning theory where I explain why the learner&rsquo / s situation contributed to their ability to learn.</p>

Att skylta lagom : Ett examensarbete om att finna balans mellan frihet och struktur i informationsförmedlingen i en utställningsmiljö.

Detta examensarbete undersöker balansen mellan frihet och struktur i informationsförmedlingen i en utställning som bygger på hands on-pedagogik. Arbetet har utgått från utställningen Människokroppen vid Tom Tits Experiment i Södertälje. Utställningen som byggdes 1997, har utformats med en tanke om att skyltar skapar hinder och en motvillighet om att skylta om "rätt sätt". Utställningsytan har idag komprimerats och experimenten har grupperats i två avdelningar. I samband med denna förändring har skyltningen i utställningen kommit att ses över. Detta eftersom föräldrar och andra vuxna besökare utryckt en önskan om mer information. Behovet av information har delats in i skyltar för enskilda experiment och skyltar för utställningens tema. Hur denna efterfrågan kan mötas utan ett gå emot den pedagogik och estetik som Tom Tits tror på är den centrala punkten för arbetet. Lösningen har utgått från en tes om att det går att samla informationen vid en punkt för att minimera antalet skyltar i utställningen. Genom metoder såsom litteraturstudier, kvalitativa intervjuer, enkätundersökning och rumsanalys har en förståelse för problemets komplexitet skapats. Vilken i stor utsträckning handlar om kontrasterna mellan barns nyfikenhet och den kontrollerande vuxenvärlden. Den designlösning som tagits fram, resulterade i tre (istället för en) punkter där fokus har lagts på att etablera utställningens tema och uppmuntra till interaktivitet. Det har även funnits en strävan efter enhetlighet och flexibilitet då problemet inte är koncentrerat till den aktuella utställningen och informationsförmedlingen i hela huset saknar en röd tråd. Varpå hänsyn har tagits till Tom Tits visuella profil och den estetik som ses som karaktäristisk för verksamheten. Studierna kretsar därmed till stor del kring Tom Tits, men förhoppningen är att arbetet intresserar flera aktörer, varpå en strävan efter generella riktlinjer för informationsförmedlingen har funnits. / This is a study about the balance between freedom and structure in the information design of an exhibition based on hands-on education. Work is focused on the exhibition The Human Body at Tom Tits Experiment in Södertälje. The exhibition, which was built in 1997, was designed with the idea that signs create barriers and a reluctance to advertise about the "right way". The exhibition space has now been compressed and experiments have been grouped into two sections. In connection with this change, the signs in the exhibition come to be reviewed. This is because parents and other adult visitors expressed a desire for more information. The need for information is divided into labels for individual experiments and signage for the exhibition's theme. How this demand can be met without going against the pedagogy and aesthetics that Tom Tits believe is the central point of the work. The solution was based on the thesis that it is possible to gather information at one point to minimize the number of signs in the exhibition. Through methods as qualitative interviews, questionnaire survey and spatial analysis have an understanding of the complexity of the problem created. Which largely deals with the contrasts between the child's curiosity and the controlling adult world. The design solution that has been developed, resulting in three (instead of one) points where the focus has been on establishing the exhibition's theme and encourage interactivity. There has also been a quest for uniformity and flexibility, then the problem is not found to the current exhibition and information design throughout the house lacks a common thread. Whereupon consideration has been given to Tom Tits visual profile and the aesthetic that is seen as characteristic of the business. Studies circuits thus largely about Tom Tits, but it is hoped that the work interests a number of players, then a pursuit of general guidelines for the transmission of information have existed.

People centered HMI’s for deaf and functionally illiterate users

The objective and motivation behind this research is to provide applications with easy-to-use interfaces to communities of deaf and functionally illiterate users, which enables them to work without any human assistance. Although recent years have witnessed technological advancements, the availability of technology does not ensure accessibility to information and communication technologies (ICT). Extensive use of text from menus to document contents means that deaf or functionally illiterate can not access services implemented on most computer software. Consequently, most existing computer applications pose an accessibility barrier to those who are unable to read fluently. Online technologies intended for such groups should be developed in continuous partnership with primary users and include a thorough investigation into their limitations, requirements and usability barriers. In this research, I investigated existing tools in voice, web and other multimedia technologies to identify learning gaps and explored ways to enhance the information literacy for deaf and functionally illiterate users. I worked on the development of user-centered interfaces to increase the capabilities of deaf and low literacy users by enhancing lexical resources and by evaluating several multimedia interfaces for them. The interface of the platform-independent Italian Sign Language (LIS) Dictionary has been developed to enhance the lexical resources for deaf users. The Sign Language Dictionary accepts Italian lemmas as input and provides their representation in the Italian Sign Language as output. The Sign Language dictionary has 3082 signs as set of Avatar animations in which each sign is linked to a corresponding Italian lemma. I integrated the LIS lexical resources with MultiWordNet (MWN) database to form the first LIS MultiWordNet(LMWN). LMWN contains information about lexical relations between words, semantic relations between lexical concepts (synsets), correspondences between Italian and sign language lexical concepts and semantic fields (domains). The approach enhances the deaf users’ understanding of written Italian language and shows that a relatively small set of lexicon can cover a significant portion of MWN. Integration of LIS signs with MWN made it useful tool for computational linguistics and natural language processing. The rule-based translation process from written Italian text to LIS has been transformed into service-oriented system. The translation process is composed of various modules including parser, semantic interpreter, generator, and spatial allocation planner. This translation procedure has been implemented in the Java Application Building Center (jABC), which is a framework for extreme model driven design (XMDD). The XMDD approach focuses on bringing software development closer to conceptual design, so that the functionality of a software solution could be understood by someone who is unfamiliar with programming concepts. The transformation addresses the heterogeneity challenge and enhances the re-usability of the system. For enhancing the e-participation of functionally illiterate users, two detailed studies were conducted in the Republic of Rwanda. In the first study, the traditional (textual) interface was compared with the virtual character-based interactive interface. The study helped to identify usability barriers and users evaluated these interfaces according to three fundamental areas of usability, i.e. effectiveness, efficiency and satisfaction. In another study, we developed four different interfaces to analyze the usability and effects of online assistance (consistent help) for functionally illiterate users and compared different help modes including textual, vocal and virtual character on the performance of semi-literate users. In our newly designed interfaces the instructions were automatically translated in Swahili language. All the interfaces were evaluated on the basis of task accomplishment, time consumption, System Usability Scale (SUS) rating and number of times the help was acquired. The results show that the performance of semi-literate users improved significantly when using the online assistance. The dissertation thus introduces a new development approach in which virtual characters are used as additional support for barely literate or naturally challenged users. Such components enhanced the application utility by offering a variety of services like translating contents in local language, providing additional vocal information, and performing automatic translation from text to sign language. Obviously, there is no such thing as one design solution that fits for all in the underlying domain. Context sensitivity, literacy and mental abilities are key factors on which I concentrated and the results emphasize that computer interfaces must be based on a thoughtful definition of target groups, purposes and objectives. / Das Ziel und die Motivation hinter dieser Forschungsarbeit ist es, Anwendungen mit benutzerfreundlichen Schnittstellen für Gehörlose und Analphabeten bereitzustellen, welche es ihnen ermöglichen ohne jede menschliche Unterstützung zu arbeiten. Obwohl es in den letzten Jahren technologische Fortschritte gab, garantiert allein die Verfügbarkeit von Technik nicht automatisch die Zugänglichkeit zu Informations- und Kommunikationstechnologien (IKT). Umfangreiche Verwendung von Texten in Menüs bis hin zu Dokumenten führen dazu, dass Gehörlose und funktionale Analphabeten auf diese Dienste, die auf Computersystemen existieren, nicht zugreifen können. Folglich stellen die meisten bestehenden EDV-Anwendungen für diejenigen eine Hürde dar, die nicht fließend lesen können. Onlinetechnologien für solche Art von Gruppen sollten in kontinuierlichem Austausch mit den Hauptnutzern entwickelt werden und gründliche Untersuchung ihrer Einschränkungen, Anforderungen und Nutzungsbarrieren beinhalten. In dieser Forschungsarbeit untersuche ich vorhandene Tools im Bereich von Sprach-, Web- und anderen Multimedia-Technologien, um Lernlücken zu identifizieren und Wege zu erforschen, welche die Informationsalphabetisierung für Gehörlose und Analphabeten erweitert. Ich arbeitete an der Entwicklung einer nutzerzentrierten Schnittstelle, um die Fähigkeiten von Gehörlosen und Nutzern mit schlechter Alphabetisierung durch Verbesserung der lexikalischen Ressourcen und durch Auswertung mehrerer Multimediaschnittstellen zu erhöhen. Die Schnittstelle des plattformunabhängigen, italienischen Gebärdensprachen (LIS) Wörterbuches wurde entwickelt, um die lexikalischen Quellen für gehörlose Anwender zu verbessern. Ich integriere die LIS-lexikalischen Ressourcen mit der MultiWordNet (MWN)-Datenbank, um das erste LIS MultiWordNet (LMWN) zu bilden. LMWN enthält Informationen über lexikalische Beziehungen zwischen Wörtern, semantische Beziehungen zwischen lexikalischen Konzepten (Synsets), Gemeinsamkeiten zwischen italienischer und Gebärdensprache-lexikalischen Konzepten und semantischen Feldern (Domänen). Der Ansatz erhöht das Verständnis der tauben Nutzer geschriebene, italienischen Sprache zu verstehen und zeigt, dass ein relativ kleiner Satz an Lexika den wesentlichen Teil der MWN abdecken kann. Die Integration von LIS-Zeichen mit MWN machte es zu einem nützlichen Werkzeug für Linguistik und Sprachverarbeitung. Der regelbasierte Übersetzungsprozess von geschriebenem, italienischem Text zu LIS wurde in ein Service-orientiertes System überführt. Der Übersetzungsprozess besteht aus verschiedenen Modulen, einschließlich einem Parser, einem semantischen Interpreter, einem Generator und einem räumlichen Zuordnungs-Planer. Diese Übersetzungsprozedur wurde im Java Application Building Center (jABC) implementiert, welches ein Framework für das eXtrem Model Driven Design (XMDD) ist. Der XMDD-Ansatz konzentriert sich darauf die Softwareentwicklung näher zum konzeptionellen Design zu bringen, sodass die Funktionalität einer Softwarelösung von jemandem verstanden werden kann, der mit Programmierkonzepten unvertraut ist. Die Transformation richtet sich an die heterogene Herausforderung und verbessert die Wiederverwendbarkeit des Systems. Zur Verbesserung der E-Partizipation der funktionalen Analphabeten wurden zwei detaillierte Studien in der Republik Ruanda durchgeführt. In der ersten Studie wurde die traditionelle, textuelle Schnittstelle mit der virtuellen, charakterbasierten, interaktiven Schnittstelle verglichen. Diese Studie hat dazu beigetragen Barrieren der Benutzerfreundlichkeit zu identifizieren. Anwender evaluierten die Schnittstellen bezüglich drei grundlegender Bereiche der Benutzerfreundlichkeit: Effektivität, Effizienz und Zufriedenstellung bei der Problemlösung. In einer anderen Studie entwickelten wir vier verschiedene Schnittstellen, um die Benutzerfreundlichkeit und die Effekte der Online-Hilfe (konsequente Hilfe) für funktionale Analphabeten zu analysieren und verglichen verschiedene Hilfsmodi (einschließlich zusätzlicher Textinformationen, Audio-Unterstützung und mit Hilfe eines virtuellen Charakters) bezüglich der Verbesserung der Leistungsfähigkeit von teilweisen Analphabeten, um ihre Zielstellung zu erreichen. In unseren neu gestalteten Schnittstellen wurden Anweisungen automatisch in die Swahili Sprache übersetzt. Alle Schnittstellen wurden auf der Grundlage der Aufgabenbewältigung, des Zeitaufwands, der System Usability Scale (SUS) Rate und der Anzahl der Hilfegesuche bewertet. Die Ergebnisse zeigen, dass die Leistungsfähigkeit der teilweisen Analphabeten bei Nutzung der Online-Hilfe signifikant verbessert wurde. Diese Dissertation stellt somit einen neuen Entwicklungsansatz dar, bei welchem virtuelle Charaktere als zusätzliche Unterstützung genutzt werden, um Nutzer, die kaum lesen können oder sonstig eingeschränkt sind, zu unterstützen. Solche Komponenten erweitern die Anwendungsnutzbarkeit indem sie eine Vielzahl von Diensten wie das Übersetzen von Inhalten in eine Landessprache, das Bereitstellen von zusätzlichen akustisch, gesprochenen Informationen und die Durchführung einer automatischen Übersetzung von Text in Gebärdensprache bereitstellen. Offensichtlich gibt ist keine One Design-Lösung, die für alle zugrundeliegenden Domänen passt. Kontextsensitivität, Alphabetisierung und geistigen Fähigkeiten sind Schlüsselfaktoren, auf welche ich mich konzentriere. Die Ergebnisse unterstreichen, dass Computerschnittstellen auf einer exakten Definition der Zielgruppen, dem Zweck und den Zielen basieren müssen.

Développement de glycomimétiques antagonistes du récepteur lectine de type C, DC-SIGN : une nouvelle stratégie préventive anti-HIV

L'immunité, un système de défense incroyable, protège la plupart des organismes vivants des pathogènes nuisibles. Les composantes innée et acquise de l'immunité travaillent ensemble pour assurer une protection efficace de l'homme ainsi que de tous les autres vertébrés à mâchoires. Les cellules dendritiques, la composante de l'immunité innée, passent régulièrement en revue les tissus périphériques, capturent et traitent les agents pathogènes envahisseurs et enfin, présentent les antigènes aux lymphocytes T pour stimuler les réponses immunitaires adaptatives spécifiques. Ces cellules reconnaissent les organismes étrangers à l'aide de plusieurs "Pattern Recognition Receptors" (PRRs), qui se lient spécifiquement à des molécules à la surface des agents pathogènes, dits "Pathogen Associated Molecular Patterns (PAMPs). Parmi les PRR, les récepteurs lectine de type C (CLRs) ont un rôle important dans la reconnaissance et dans la capture des pathogènes. Cependant, DC-SIGN, l'un de ces CLR, peut être détourné par de nombreux agents pathogènes dangereux, y compris le VIH, afin de promouvoir leur infection. Ce travail vise à développer des antagonistes de DC-SIGN, qui serait en mesure de bloquer l'utilisation de ce récepteur par des agents pathogènes. Pour atteindre cet objectif, la stratégie du développement de ligands glycomimétique de DC-SIGN et la présentation multivalente des glycomimétiques monovalents sélectionnés a été employée. Les études présentées ont été réalisées en collaboration avec plusieurs groupes de chimistes, qui ont conçu et synthétisé différents composés glycomimétiques ainsi que différentes plates-formes multivalentes. Des ligands monovalents de DC-SIGN basés sue le mannose, le fucose et sur les composés C-glycosidiques ont été explorés et différentes plates-formes de valence avec différents modes de présentation dans l'espace ont été étudiées. En utilisant la résonance plasmonique de surface (SPR), l'activité des composés à inhiber DC-SIGN a été estimée. De plus, les composés ont été évalués pour leur sélectivité pour DC-SIGN par rapport à la Langerine, un autre CLR ayant un rôle protecteur contre l'infection par le VIH. Certains de ces composés ont été caractérisés par cristallographie aux rayons X et par spectrométrie RMN. Les études de SPR de composés multivalents ont confirmé l'amélioration de l'activité, mais a également révélé des complications possibles. Dans l'ensemble, ces études ont permis d'identifier les deux meilleurs nouveaux composés et de suggérer des perspectives pour l'amélioration de ces composés et des plates-formes de présentation multivalentes.

This dissertation examines the language proficiency of school-aged deaf pupils from a bilingual perspective. The first aim of the study is to investigate the Swedish L2 skills of the pupils. This includes testing the validity of the Processability Theory on deaf learners of Swedish as an L2. The second aim is to investigate whether there is a correlation between proficiency in Swedish and Swedish Sign Language (SSL) as suggested in earlier research on deaf bilingualism. This study is cross-sectional and contains data from 38 pupils (grades 5 and 10) from a school for deaf and hearing-impaired pupils in Sweden. The data consists of retellings of a cartoon in written Swedish and of free stories in SSL. For the first part of the study, the Swedish data has been analyzed according to Processability Theory (PT).  For the second part of the study, narrative structure in both the Swedish and SSL data has been analyzed. As a theoretical framework, Labov’s narrative model is applied. The results show that there is an implicational order in the informants’ development of Swedish following the predicted grammatical learning order described by PT. The results therefore suggest that PT is a valid theory also for deaf learners of L2 Swedish. The conclusions regarding SSL proficiency suggest that more research about sign language as such is needed to get a deeper understanding of SSL proficiency. The results show that one narrative component of Labov’s model - Evaluation - is an important component in SSL proficiency. The results from the comparative analysis show that there is a positive statistical correlation between some Swedish and SSL variables used in this study, suggesting that skills in Swedish correlate with skills in SSL. This means that a well-developed sign language is important for the deaf to learn any written language as a second language.
