Psychogeographic Otherworlds: Experiencing Englishness with Alan Moore and Iain Sinclair

This thesis concerns the practice of ‘psychogeography’ in London, England, and the ways in which psychogeographic writings provoke in city-dwellers an acute sense of disorientation, as though the everyday were otherworldly. My study is intended as a response to Guy Debord’s claim that ‘psychogeography’ investigates “the precise laws […] of the geographical environment” on “the emotions and behaviour of individuals” (Debord qtd. in Coverley 88): any revolutionary enterprise must point to the future, the very notion of which can only be imprecise and un-empirical – psychogeography is not necessarily an exception. I argue that for Alan Moore and Iain Sinclair, the psychogeographic imperative is rather to imagine the implosion of Londonscape as it is well known, since only spatial structures that thus unravel may offer mystical insights that are, as yet, unspoiled by neoliberal/Thatcherite politics and the accompanying ambition to re-vamp English history in a nostalgic light. This study presents psychogeography not simply as a strategy of political resistance but as a visceral and metaphysical experience; it draws upon SF theories of worlding and the philosophical notion of Dasein to address some concerns that have arisen in post-imperial Britain, such as the desire to define English identity, i.e., ‘Englishness.’ / Thesis / Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) / This dissertation studies Alan Moore’s and Iain Sinclair’s use of psychogeography to examine the city of London. Psychogeography is an implosive, fragmented writing style that estranges the meaning of the urban everyday. Subject to psychogeographic depiction, London becomes a city altogether foreign, if not to say fantastical. I argue that psychogeography is both a strategy of political resistance and a visceral experience – one that could influence common ways of reading English history and culture (i.e. ‘Englishness.’)

À l’image des cas exposés par Freud, les romans de May Sinclair sont des objets déconcertants. Souvent qualifiés de textes hybrides qui se tiendraient à mi-chemin entre deux époques (celle des victoriens et le modernisme), ils se distinguent également par l’importance accordée aux discours théoriques. Esprit curieux au parcours singulier, May Sinclair est en effet également une essayiste prolifique, dont les publications sur le vote féminin et la condition des femmes, les articles de psychologie et de psychanalyse (issus de son implication auprès de la pionnière Medico-Psychological Clinic), les critiques littéraires ou les développements sur le néo-idéalisme semblent être en dialogue constant avec ses écrits de fiction. Ceux-ci ne sont jamais pour autant des romans à thèses. Bien au contraire, la prose sinclairienne s’attache systématiquement à remettre en question le cadre de référence, à prolonger le questionnement ou à affiner l’analyse, et propose ainsi un contrepoint intéressant aux modèles woolfiens de représentation du féminin. Afin de saisir ce qui fonde la démarche sinclairienne et de la situer dans son contexte intellectuel et artistique immédiat, ce travail propose une étude du dialogue intertextuel transdisciplinaire entre les différents travaux d’écriture Sinclair. Il s’agit plus précisément de montrer comment la pensée par cas et la pratique de l’étude de cas, telle qu’elle était pratiquée par Freud au tournant du XXe siècle, vient influencer la fiction sinclairienne, placée sous le signe d’une négociation singulière entre l’énigme et le modèle, entre l’abstrait et l’inconnu. / May Sinclair’s novels, like Freud’s case narratives in their times, rely on singularity. If their conflicting Victorian and modernist dynamics are often underlined, another type of structural hybridity is also perceptible, namely the important role played by theoretical discourses. May Sinclair is indeed a prolific essayist, whose papers on femininity and women Suffrage, on psychology and psychoanalysis (based on her involvement with the Medico-Psychological Clinic), and on her neo-idealist philosophy, as well as her many literary reviews, are ingrained in her fiction, which still manages to stay away from any form of didacticism. Indeed, Sinclair’s fiction seems to constantly try and challenge its theoretical framework and raises new issues on the representations of feminine consciousness. It thus provides us with an interesting counterpoint to Woolf’s. In order to highlight the specific dynamics of Sinclair’s approach to fiction and to situate Sinclair’s novels within their intellectual and artistic context, this thesis explores the transdisciplinary, intertextual dialogue between Sinclair’s fiction and non-fiction. More precisely, this work aims at showing how the psychoanalytical case-based reasoning method initiated by Sigmund Freud at the turn of the twentieth century plays a central role in Sinclair’s writings, which appears as a complex negotiation between enigma and model, or between the abstract and the unknown.

A Group Interpretation Script, "Sinclair Lewis, a Biographical Portrait"

The purpose of this project was to prepare a group interpretation script based upon the life of Sinclair Lewis and to direct a production of the script. Major sources for the script are Mark Schorer, Sinclair Lewis: An American Life; Grace Hegger Lewis, With Love From Gracie; and Vincent Sheean, Dorothy and Red. The script employs five readers and has a performance time of approximately fifty-five minutes. The thesis includes a biography of Lewis, a justification for the project, the purpose and procedures followed, as well as discussions of the production concept, adapting material for group interpretation, direction, rehearsal procedures, and evaluations of the script and the performance. The complete script is also included in the thesis.

[pt] A Freedom House, instituição estadunidense, reportou 2019 como o décimo quarto ano seguido de recessão democrática mundial, uma crise que ressuscita a discussão acerca do conceito usado para denominar esses movimentos antidemocráticos. Muito se fala que eles seriam novas versões de um fascismo, a despeito de características distintas em cada manifestação. O semiólogo italiano Umberto Eco antecipou essa questão e criou um conceito que busca resolver essa problemática: Ur-Fascismo. O Ur-Fascismo é o fascismo que nunca acaba, que se reconstrói, se retrabalha, se adequa a cada época, dado seu caráter infinito. As distintas aparições do fascismo não se limitam à política da realidade: a política da ficção tratou de apresentá-lo de diversas formas. Partindo da discussão de uma base teórica sobre teoria política, em particular sobre o Ur-Fascismo, será possível perceber como a ficção tratou aparições e características desse fenômeno, tomando, para isso, dois objetos: Não vai acontecer aqui, de Sinclair Lewis, e Ele está de volta, de Timur Vermes. Assim, será possível trabalhar as idiossincrasias dos Ur- Fascismos dessas ficções, suas diferenças e similitudes, em consoante com as bases da teoria política e, no processo, expandir tanto o estado da arte sobre literaturas do Ur-Fascismo, quanto contribuir à discussão sobre um fenômeno político pouco compreendido. Por fim, encerra-se com uma discussão, a partir da ideia de vaga-lumes de Pasolini e Didi-Huberman, sobre a importância da arte, em especial a arte antifascista, na luta contra o Ur-Fascismo. / [en] Freedom House, an US institution, reported 2019 as the fourteenth year in a row of a global democratic recession, a crisis that resuscitates the discussion about the concept used to name these anti-democratic movements. Much is said that they would be new versions of fascism, despite different characteristics in each manifestation. Italian semiologist Umberto Eco anticipated this issue and created a concept that seeks to resolve this issue: Ur-Fascism. Ur-Fascism is fascism that never ends, that is reconstructed, reworked, adapted to each era, given its infinite character. The different appearances of fascism are not limited to the politics of reality: the politics of fiction tried to present it in different ways. Starting from the discussion of a theoretical basis on political theory, in particular on Ur-Fascism, it will be possible to perceive how fiction treated apparitions and characteristics of this phenomenon, taking, for this, two objects: It can t happen here, by Sinclair Lewis, and Look who s back, by Timur Vermes. Thus, it will be possible to work on the Ur-Fascism idiosyncrasies of these fictions, their differences and similarities, in line with the bases of political theory and, in the process, expand both the state of the art on Ur-Fascism literatures and contribute to the discussion on a little understood political phenomenon. Finally, it ends with a discussion, based on the idea of fireflies, developed by Pasolini and Didi-Huberman, about the importance of art, especially anti-fascist art, in the fight against Ur- Fascism.

'Liberties and licences' : gender, stream of consciousness and the philosophy of Henri Bergson and William James in selected female modernist fiction 1914-1929

This thesis reconsiders in detail the connections between a selection of innovative female modernist writers who experimented variously with stream-of-consciousness techniques, May Sinclair, Dorothy Richardson, Katherine Mansfield and Virginia Woolf. It describes in this context the impact of the philosophy and thoughts of both William James and Henri Bergson upon these women writers’ literary work. It also argues for a fundamental revision of existing understandings of this interconnection by considering the feminist context of such work and recognising that the work of these four female writers in effect incorporates a ‘gendered’ reading of James and Bergson (encountered both directly and indirectly through the cultural and intellectual zeitgeist). In establishing a feminist perspective as key elements of their aesthetic the thesis explores the vital influence of existing tradition of female autobiography upon their reception and usage of both James and Bergson. The latter’s impact on such women writers were so distinctive and powerful as the work of these philosophers seemed to speak directly to contemporary feminist concerns and in that context to represent a way of thinking about society and culture. This echoes and has parallels with existing attempts at revisions of patriarchal society and creating new spaces for female independence. In the above context the thesis reviews existing research on the impact of James and Bergson on these four writers and offers new insights into how each of them made use of these two seminal thinkers by analysing the relationship between theories, selected literary and philosophical texts. Stream-of-consciousness ought to be seen as a distinctive, specific tradition connected with feminist concerns and as a way of writing the inner and hidden self, rather than just a narrow formal feature of literary texts; it offers women a continuing, creative exploration of its possibilities as fictional practice. The female modernists included in this account represent the celebrated: Virginia Woolf and Katherine Mansfield, together with writers largely and unjustly forgotten in subsequent periods: Dorothy Richardson and May Sinclair. However, the thesis demonstrates that such female modernist writers gained much from being part of a range of informal networks, being almost within a tradition in which they learnt, borrowed and reacted to each other; an interconnection that requires new critical recognition.
