Nosso objetivo é encontrar limitantes para a probabilidade de que o tamanho da epidemia não sobrepasse certa proporção do número inicial de suscetíveis. Iniciamos apresentando as definições e a dinâmica do processo de epidemia determinístico. Obtemos um valor limiar para o número inicial de suscetíveis para que a epidemia exploda ou não. Consideramos o modelo de epidemia estocástico SIR assumindo que não há período latente, isto é, que um infectado pode transmitir a infecção ao instante de ser contagiado. O modelo é considerado com uma configuração inicial de suscetíveis e infectados e é feita especial ênfases no estudo da variável aleatória ''tamanho da epidemia'', que é definida como a diferença entre o número de suscetíveis ao começar e ao terminar a propagação da doença. Como na parte determinística, obtemos teoremas limiares para o modelo de epidemia estocástico. Os métodos usados para encontrar os limitantes são os de análise da cadeia de Markov imersa e de comparação estocástica / Abstract: This work has as objective to study the SIR (susceptible-infected-removed) epidemic model in the deterministic and stochastic version. Our objective is to find bounds for the probability that the size of the epidemic does not exceed certain proportion of the initial number of susceptible individuals. We begin presenting the definitions and the dynamics for the deterministic model for a general epidemic. We obtain a threshold value for the initial number of susceptible individuals for the epidemic to build up or not. As fundamental part of this work, we consider a stochastic epidemic SIR model assuming there is no latent period, that is, one infected can transmit the infection at the moment of being infected. The model is considered with an initial configuration of susceptible and infected individuals and the study is focused on the random variable ''size of the epidemic'', which is defined as the difference between the number of susceptible individuals at the start and at the end of the propagation of the epidemic. As in the deterministic part, we obtain a threshold theorem for the stochastic epidemic. This diploma thesis aims to classify the uses of as in the text of the Middle English romance Sir Gawain and the Green Knight from a formal and functional perspective. As has acquired a great number of functions through the process of grammaticalization. The theoretical part of the thesis firstly deals with the historical development of as from the Old English swā and ealswā. It then describes the uses of as in Middle English. In this period, as was found to function as an adverb, conjunction, preposition and a relative pronoun. Each of these uses can be further divided into a number of subtypes. The thesis subsequently summarizes the functions as can have in Present-Day English. The final sections of the theoretical overview briefly present the processes of grammaticalization and constructionalization, as these two processes have been instrumental in the development of as. The practical section is concerned with the analysis of all the instances of as in the chosen text. It classifies them and defines each type of use in more detail. The analysis also considers competing means of expressing the same function and comments on possible ambiguities. This dissertation is a diplomatic transcription edition and an analysis of BL Cotton Caligula Aii with emphasis on the Middle English romances in the manuscript and how the entire manuscript was compiled to teach lessons in obedience. The first section of the manuscript contains Sir Eglamour and teaches lessons in social obedience. The second section features three romances by Thomas Chestre: Octavian Imperator, Sir Launfal, and Lybeaus Desconus and teaches courtly and chivalric obedience. Section three features Emaré and teaches lessons in obedience and free will. The final section contains Sege of Jerusalem. Chevalier Assigne, and Sir Isumbras and focuses on obedience and the direct hand of God. The romances in CCAii, which have often been dismissed as overly simplistic or convention, become complex and meaningful text when they are analyzed as part of the compilation for which they were chosen and arranged.

Sir John Soane (1753--1837) is an intriguing character. This architect has transformed his London House into a Museum. The only thing we have left of him is the House and three Descriptions of it. I will not try to put apart what Sir John Soane has done in his House but see what he has done. Soane invites us in the House, lets you visit it and be lost. Once you have dived, accepted the invitation, you have found a house full of art objects gathered to teach architecture. Art and architecture meet. The experience is haunting. Through it the architect rediscovers the story of objects to identify, the everyday story he builds. The experience of the House is a mirroring of Soane's mind. The House which makes the architect understand his projection upon others. The amplitude and generosity of his vision becomes history.

The First World War's 1916 Arab Revolt has become, in the West, a renowned episode in part because of the presence of one dominating character: T.E. Lawrence. However, "Lawrence of Arabia" is only the most prominent of the many Western agents sent to advise the Revolt. The narratives of these advisers have come to dominate the most Westerners popular conception of the Arab uprising. Most scholars have portrayed the British advisers to the Arab Revolt as "pro-Arab." The aim of this thesis is to challenge that portrayal through a careful analysis of the writings (published and unpublished) and actions of the four advisers: T.E. Lawrence, Sir Ronald Storrs, Major Sir Hubert Young, Lt Col. Sir Percy Joyce. / I argue for a more subtle, complex, heterogeneous version of the advisers Pro-Arab approach. By examining the advisers' published accounts and the available archival resources the contrast between the rhetoric surrounding their legends and the actual practice of their war experiences will be laid bare. The goal of the thesis is to use primary sources to demonstrate, in various areas of their relationships with Arabs, a discourse of superiority versus inferiority. This work has consequently attempted to present a less altruistic agenda emerging from the advisers' wartime conduct. In its place I have demonstrated numerous instances where they coerced and enforced their own interpretation of Arab desires and even an "Arab" identity onto the Revolt itself and furthermore, cemented these interpretations into Western popular culture.
