Towards secure web browsing on mobile devices

Amrutkar, Chaitrali Vijay 08 June 2015 (has links)
The Web is increasingly being accessed by portable, multi-touch wireless devices. Despite the popularity of platform-specific (native) mobile apps, a recent study of smartphone usage shows that more people (81%) browse the Web than use native apps (68%) on their phone. Moreover, many popular native apps such as BBC depend on browser-like components (e.g., Webview) for their functionality. The popularity and prevalence of web browsers on modern mobile phones warrants characterizing existing and emerging threats to mobile web browsing, and building solutions for the same. Although a range of studies have focused on the security of native apps on mobile devices, efforts in characterizing the security of web transactions originating at mobile browsers are limited. This dissertation presents three main contributions: First, we show that porting browsers to mobile platforms leads to new vulnerabilities previously not observed in desktop browsers. The solutions to these vulnerabilities require careful balancing between usability and security and might not always be equivalent to those in desktop browsers. Second, we empirically demonstrate that the combination of reduced screen space and an independent selection of security indicators not only make it difficult for experts to determine the security standing of mobile browsers, but actually make mobile browsing more dangerous for average users as they provide a false sense of security. Finally, we experimentally demonstrate the need for mobile specific techniques to detect malicious webpages. We then design and implement kAYO, the first mobile specific static tool to detect malicious webpages in real-time.

News on the go via smartphones : users, non-users, and the relationship between new and established news media

Yang, Mengchieh Jacie 09 December 2010 (has links)
With the diffusion of smartphones in the United States, the news industry is trying to turn this mobile innovation into an effective vehicle for delivering news anytime, anywhere. But does smartphone adoption mean news consumption via smartphones? To provide insight to this question, a national Web-based survey was conducted to explore smartphone adopters vs. non adopter, smartphone news consumers vs. non-consumers, and younger vs. older smartphone news consumers. Smartphone adopters were younger, had higher household incomes, and used news media more often than smartphone non-adopters. Most of the smartphone adopters primarily used their phones as an interpersonal communication device. Unlike smartphone adopters, smartphone news consumers were more likely to be male. Similar to smartphone adopters, they were younger and used news media more often than non-consumers of smartphone news. Moreover, smartphone news consumers used portal news sites more than newspaper, television, or social networking sites. As such, they also expressed higher satisfaction with portal news sites. A complementary relationship was found between smartphone news and traditional and online news media. Predictors of smartphone adoption included age and social pressure; predictors of adopting smartphones for news included news interest, gender, education, and income. In addition, news interest was a significant predictor for the amount of time users spent on smartphone news, while age, income and news interest were significant predictors for the number of times (frequency) users accessed news via smartphones. Even though younger smartphone news consumers showed lower news interests and used traditional news media less often than older smartphone news consumers, they did not spend any less time or access different kinds of news topics any less than their older counterparts. More of the younger than older smartphone news consumers followed health and fitness, science and technology, and entertainment news. / text

Alami, Fina Saida January 2013 (has links)
This essay deals with the influence of leadership on student use of Smart phones as an ICT tool at after school care. I use a qualitative, hermeneutical method that departs from two stories. I also use qualitative interviews with both structured and unstructured questions. My reflections and interpretations are, through the interviews, complemented by my colleagues’ views of the use of Smart phones and how that is affected by how the activities are managed. I have faced a dilemma in my stories where I have to choose between following the school’s rules or help the students that need help with the use of Smart phones. Reflecting on the stories leads me to view my own leadership and style of leadership in a critical light and to view myself in a wider context within a problematic organization with a hierarchical leadership. This leads to other dilemmas that occur in a school organization, where helpful factors to a change can be seen in different perspectives with the open dialogue as an advantage.

Improving Mobile Augmented Reality User Experience on Smartphones

Han, Charles ZhouXiao January 2010 (has links)
This thesis focuses on improving the user experience for computer vision-based Augmented Reality (AR) applications on smartphones. The first part shows our proposed methods to enhance image binarisation. This improves the marker detection results in mobile AR applications. The comparisons of the original ARToolKit binarization method, our proposed histogram-based automatic thresholding and our histogram equalization based thresholding show that the histogram-based automatic thresholding produces a relatively better result under extreme and normal lighting conditions but slightly reduces the ARToolKit framerate. The second part introduces a new fast painterly rendering algorithm which produces an immersive experience for mobile AR users. The proposed algorithm has low complexity and achieves a real-time performance on smartphones. In addition, this study has carried out a preliminary experiment comparing mobile GPU-based image processing algorithms with CPU-based equivalent on smartphones. The result indicates that the GPU-based implementations perform better than the CPU when processing relatively large sized images.

Κλαουδάτος, Νικόλαος 11 January 2011 (has links)

The initiative in the development of tools to assist the producer to carry out a satisfactory irrigation management that is accessible and of easy operation is a goal that should always be set as a priority. This work aims to develop an application for mobile devices, able to use its own database in the realization of the daily irrigation time calculation for each crop on a certain date. Techniques and software development tools were used specificly for the Android mobile platform. The application intends to assist in conducting a management with rational use of water in irrigated areas in the state of Ceará, semi-arid northeast, mitigating the lack of technical assistance specialized in precision farming, using databases with information necessary for the calculation of the need water and subsequent irrigation time recommendation. Among the installed databases, it has historical series of "potential reference evapotranspiration" for the past ten years in representative regions where the eight main irrigation schemes of the Ceará state: Curu-Paraipaba, Pentecostes, Baixo Acaraú, Araras Norte, Jaguaribe Apodi, Morada Nova, Tabuleiros de Russas e Icó-Lima Campos are located and also databases with information on the "crop coefficient" and "coverage percentage" of major crops exploited on the perimeters. This application was developed to present a new approach to irrigation management, making use of the available mobile phones in order to allow users to perform the calculation of the daily irrigation time in any of the irrigated perimeters of the Ceará state. The use of the application in simulation for the Irrigated Perimeter Baixo Acaraú demonstrated a reduction of approximately 26% over the current use of water in irrigation, allowing its use be concluded that provides good irrigation management and could result in an economy of water required to reduce the impact of recurring long and repetitive periods of drought on water resources of the state of Ceará.
