Toy(ed) soldiers : constructions of white adolescent masculinity in Mark Behr's narratives.

Swinstead, Kim Tracy. January 2007 (has links)
This thesis is a literary thematic analysis of Mark Behr's novels The Smell of Apples (1996) and Embrace (2000). Through these novels, Behr explores the nature of masculine identities and the ways in which they are developed through a process of adolescent males observing and interacting with their parents and the society in which they live. The development of the two protagonists is traced and white hegemonic attitudes to masculinity in South Africa are exposed. The novels are of importance as these hegemonic attitudes continue to exist within South Africa today. The focus of this analysis is on white adolescent masculinities and the ways in which Behr illustrates the effects of apartheid society on their development. The study makes an in-depth analysis of the plot and themes and the way in which these guide the reader into a critical awareness of socially constructed masculine identities. Each of the four themes - namely, sexuality, race, gender and land - is explored in this thesis and careful consideration is given to the techniques Behr uses in his writing. Of importance to this thesis are the interrelationships between character, themes and the context of the novels. While the novels are not regarded as a case study, this thesis repeatedly demonstrates the socio-political awareness that Behr uses in order to offer his reader insight into the significant realities that have faced adolescent males as they construct their identities. / Thesis (M.A.)-University of KwaZulu-Natal, Pietermaritzburg, 2007.

Blomkvist, Frida, Caroli, Molly January 2018 (has links)

Introduction: Intracranial aneurysms bring important consequences for the affected patient. The subarachnoid hemorrhage (HSA) has a strong correlation with saccular aneurysms and due to its gravity and high occurrence of sequels, its study deserves importance. A sensory change can this ASH-related is the olfactory deficit. Among the methods of valuation of smell described, are quantitative tools that can be used to ensure more reliable results considering the clinical picture of these patients. Objectives: Characterize the smell of patients before and after surgical treatment for aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage. Method: This dissertation is composed of two articles. The first consisted of a review article with title Methods of evaluation of smell in victims of subarachnoid hemorrhage patients: a systematic review. The second is an original article entitled Olfactory evaluation in aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage before and after surgery, this 15 were studied adults with aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage, met at the Hospital da Restauração de Pernambuco, evaluated in three different moments: After the bleeding, a week after surgery and three months postoperatively. The search was started after approval by the Research Ethics Committee of the Hospital. After the application of informed consent was held to review the medical records, interview with the participant and evaluation of smell through a test of aqueous solutions, adapted from other studies, built by the Pharmacy School, Federal University of Pernambuco. Results: The first article showed heterogeneity of the methods used to evaluate the smell in aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage and in the methods selected for application of evaluations, with evidence of olfactory deficits in this population. The results from the original study of this dissertation it was observed as many olfactory normal ratings, moreover, was not found significant correlation between olfactory score with the following variables (age, interval in days between the subarachnoid hemorrhage and the olfactory evaluation, education and topography of the aneurysm). There was no significant change in scoring olfactory after surgery. There was a statistically significant difference in the comparison between the olfactory score with a week after surgery and three months postoperatively. Final considerations: The results of this study show the occurrence of olfactory disfunction after aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage, as well as worsens the classification of smell after surgery. Improvement was observed in the nose after three months postoperatively, with statistical significance. It is suggested a continuation of studies with the theme, but also to make the subjective perception of smell to identify the problems that the disfunction olfactory cause in this population´s life.

Avaliação do olfato em pacientes com doença de Wilson / Smell analysis in patients with Wilson\'s disease

Margarete de Jesus Carvalho 21 January 2016 (has links)
Smell disorders are frequently encountered in neurodegenerative diseases, such as Parkinson\'s disease (PO) and Alzheimer\'s disease (AO). Smell analysis has been a useful tool for the differential diagnosis of several forms of degenerative parkinsonism, and especially for the differentiation between PO and essential tremor. Early diagnosis in WO is the key for a successful treatment. If there were smell impairment in the early stages of the illness, it could be used as another clue to help on its diagnosis. To the present date, there is only one study connecting WO with smell problems, the aim of this study was to evaluate smell function in a group of WO patients and compare them with a control group. We analyzed 37 WO patients with and 24 WO patients without neurologic symptoms, and 59 controls. Ali subjects were evaluated regarding age, gender, schooling, tobacco use, Mini Mental State Examination (MMSE), and the WO patients were also evaluated regarding duration of the illness, medication and neurologic scoring. Smell was analyzed by means of Sniffin\' Sticks smell identification test (SS-16 numbered pens and four options of answer for each pen). Twenty-four subjects with WO had no neurologic symptoms (45.83% female), and 37 patients had neurologic impairment (56,76% male). The control group was composed by 59 individuais, 35 (59,33%) male. Their age average were 33,38 ± 9,79 years for WO neurologic symptoms; 29 ± 9,61 years for WO without neurologic symptoms; and 33,81 ± 10,67 years for the control group. Ali WO patients were on treatment: 47(77%) with penicillamine, 7(11,5%) with trientine, and 7(11,5%) with zinc salt formulations. The average of correct answers in the SS-16 were: 12,03 ± 2,21 for the WO with neurologic symptoms group; 12,15 ± 2,07 for the WO without neurologic symptoms; and 12,70 ± 2,03 for the control group. In the smell testing with SS-16, there was no significant difference among the three groups, but the MMSE scoring and schooling had a significant influence over SS-16 score when comparing WO with neurologic symptoms patients with the other groups (WO patients without neurologic symptoms and control group). There was no smell dysfunction in WO patients in this study, but diminished smell perception was observed in some WO patients (either with or without neurologic impairment). Regarding smell impairment observed in some WO patients in the current analysis, some considerations must be made that could have influenced smell identification in these individuais. Copper accumulation and free radicais production in the central neNOUS system can trigger neurodegeneration processes in structures involved in srnell perception, metabolic impairment, building up of neurotoxic substances (such as ammonia and manganese), and neurotransmitter disorders, contributing to the emergence of srnell dysfunction

Multi-sensory appreciation and practice : a somaesthetic approach to the exploration of taste smell and touch in food-based art

Nyangiro, Everlyn Akinyi January 2016 (has links)
Even though food-based artworks are no longer a new occurrence within art practice, the particular practice of food that uses taste, smell and touch as artistic medium is still relatively new. This practice poses new challenges at both the creative and receptive ends: for the audience the challenge is linked to understanding and relating with the artwork while for the artist it involves directing the audience’s engagement. Under the theoretical lens of Somaesthetics and Langer’s Mindfulness discourse, this thesis has examined what it means to appreciate food-based artworks through taste, smell and touch. It has also investigated ways in which this form of practice can be developed further. Practice within the research has been used as a means of thinking through the creative choices taken by artists with the purpose of understanding how perceptibility and engagement with food-based works through taste, smell and touch can be enhanced. Some of the key references include Miwa Koizumi’s NY flavors, Burkhard Bacher & Herbert Hinter’s Landscape, Maki Ueda’s Aromascape, and several works by Sam Bompas and Harry Parr amongst others. The outcome of the research include: the development of an attentive discourse of appreciation which outlines the conditions necessary for the appreciation of food-based artwork through its taste, smell and touch; and the articulation of creative strategies that can be used by artists to enhance the perceptibility of taste, smell and touch and encourage engagement. The contributions to knowledge made by this thesis include: The introduction of a new genre of food-based practice; the use of Somaesthetics and Mindfulness as a lens to examine the appreciation of food-based art; the identification of new concerns within practice facing artists using food’s taste, smell and touch as medium; and the new form of encounter with art that requires a mindful-somatic attentiveness.
