The assessment of the control function of social work managersNaile, Bongiwe Cynthia 07 1900 (has links)
The purpose of this research study was to assess the control function of social work managers. The basic focus of the study is on how they perceive this management function of control as they exercise it, as well as how it is exercised to them.
Out of two research methods that one can choose from, namely quantitative and qualitative, the quantitative was chosen as the relevant one to use because of the specific close-ended questions that were to be answered by respondents regarding the exercise of control as a management function. Out of twenty five (25) questionnaires, an analysis of data was done on twenty (N = 20), because that was the original target and the five were just distributed in case some could not answer for whatever reason.
The findings and responses from the respondents were analysed and interpreted to meet the main objectives of the study.
Social Work / M. Diac. (Social Work)

Die voorkoming van organisasieverwante stres by maatskaplike werkers deur maatskaplikewerkbestuurderNortjé, Vasti 03 December 2013 (has links)
Organisasieverwante stres onder maatskaplike werkers is ‘n internasionale verskynsel (Shweta & Siebert, 2007).
• Alle maatskaplikewerkbestuurders wat by regerings- of nie-regeringsorganisasies werksaam is.
• Alle maatskaplike werkers wat by regerings- of nie-regeringsorganisasies werksaam is.
The goal of this research was to explore and describe the nature of prevention of organisation-related stress among social workers through primary intervention strategies by social work managers to develop a prevention guideline. The qualitative research approach, together with the case study, contextual, explorative and descriptive research designs were used in the study. The two populations included a) all social work managers and b) all social workers that work for government or non-government organisations. Samples from the populations were obtained through the non-probability sampling method and the purposive and snowball sampling techniques. Data was collected through semi-structured interviews. Tesch’s framework for qualitative research analysis supported the researcher to identify themes and sub-themes, while Guba’s model was used to assist with the verification of qualitative data. The empirical findings provided the foundation for the development of a prevention guideline. / Prevention of organisation-related stress amongst social workers by social work managers / Prevention of organisation related stress amongst social workers by social work managers / Text in Afrikaans, with abstract and title in Afrikaans and English / Department of Social Work / Ph. Perceptions, challenges and coping strategies of social work managers regarding their management functionsGunda, Edison 02 1900 (has links)
The goal of this study was to explore the perceptions, challenges and coping
strategies of social work managers regarding their management functions.
Management is vital for growth and survival of the social welfare sector and this can
be realized if social work managers understand and are able to execute their
management functions. This study utilized a qualitative research approach to
unpack the perceptions and challenges of social work managers. Explorative,
descriptive and contextual research designs were used to explore how social work
managers cope in their settings. Data were collected from social work managers in
the NGO sector and the Department of Social Development, through semistructured
interviews. A sample was selected by using purposive sampling. Data
were analyzed using Creswell’s (2007:150) analytical spiral model, and data was
verified using Guba’s model in Creswell (2007:150). Relevant social research ethical
issues were fully considered in this study. The study revealed that there were social
work managers who had the basic understanding of what social work management
entails, whilst there were also those who did not understand what is meant by the
concept ‘social work management’. In this study it was found that social work
managers perform key management functions and roles such as planning,
organising, leading, controlling, supervision, fundraising and financial management,
coordination of services and performance management. The study revealed
common challenges which are faced by social work managers. These challenges
include a shortage of human resources, physical resources shortage, a lack of
knowledge on management and a lack of adequate funding. / Social Work / M.A. (Social Work)

The motivational function of the social work managerWillemse, Ursula Berenice 30 June 2003 (has links)
Motivation is critical to the effective management of social workers in an organisation. A literature study of the concept motivation and an empirical study on the motivational function of the social work manager were conducted. This exploratory/descriptive study aimed to set scientifically grounded guidelines for the implementation of motivation as management function of social work managers.
The literature indicated that motivating employees is the responsibility of social work managers. Research showed that social workers, social work managers and the organisation do benefit from motivation. The respondents indicated that motivation as a management function is important. They highlighted that intrinsic motivation and internal and external motivators influence their motivation positively. Organisational policies and a leadership style characterised by autocracy and a laissez-faire approach are demotivating.
Social work managers should apply the principles of motivation theories, motivational strategies and guidelines to maintain and sustain motivation. Conclusions and recommendations were made regarding the motivational function of the social work manager. / Social work / M. Diac. (Social Work)

Text in Afrikaans / The purpose of this research study was to determine whether social workers at ground-level experience job satisfaction in their current job situations, as well as to determine the motivational factors that play a role in this regard. Eleven non-governmental welfare organisations in the Boland Region were included in this investigation. Forty-seven social workers participated in this investigation. Based on this investigation into the experiences relating to job satisfaction of ground-level social workers, the following conclusions became evident: Younger social workers experience more job satisfaction then there counterparts in mid-life, while the social in the age bracket of 50 years and above seem to experience more job satisfaction. There seems to be a great deal of job dissatisfaction amongst social worker in the Boland Region as two thirds of the respondents indicated the intention to change their current places of employment. Based on theses conclusions, it is recommended that supervisors within region should establish a forum at which they can deliberate about their management role as supervisors in order to promote job satisfaction amongst social workers. / Social work / M.Diac.
