While taking the language like social practice, we question in which measure the linguistic choices express the political, historical and intellectual positions of those days. The movement for the abolition of the slavery mobilized some of our intellectuals and the press that, allying with them, materialized occurred facts into documents, making them more understandable to the society. The recognition of the importance of the historical-linguistic context and of the analysis of the document does so that the man can reconstitute his own past and the past of the language, doing so they understand better this past by the light of the modern theories. The choice of the Linguistic Historiography as a theoretical and methodological support, is justified in virtue of the interdisciplinary apparatus that it established, in essence between Linguistics and the History, in the process of interpreting documents, comprising a spacious vision of the language and of the man, treating them in their totality and not only by the sociological or anthropological point of view, but in a linguistic dimension, fact that allows us to understand the man and his interaction with the social group. The resource of the metalanguage and the application of the principles proposed by Konrad Koerner are privileged in our analysis. We value the documentary character of the Piparotes texts produced by Cruz e Sousa for O Moleque newspaper between 1885, and which were taken like sample, coming to think that such texts were significant in the society of the time and helped rebuilding reality linguistically / Nesta Dissertação, ao aproximar Língua e História da realidade social com o objetivo de examinar a língua portuguesa em uso no Brasil e as referencias ao homem negro e à abolição da escravatura durante o século XIX, obtivemos como resultado a identificação de características da época.

Alvarado Luna, Patricio Alonso 25 May 2017 (has links)

The short story "O Rebelde", from Inglês de Souza‘s Contos Amazônicos (1893), presents in its plot a fact of the history of Pará, the Cabanagem. In this narrative the characters experience the first manifestations of the rebels in 1832. The research was developed based on the evidence of this historical fact in the short story, observing the interaction between real and fictional, that is, how the historical fact has been recreated in the fictional universe of the author. This way, the discourses of the history were observed, from the 19th and 20th centuries, in the books Motins Políticos (1865-1890) by Domingos Antônio Raiol, Cabanagem: o povo no poder (1984) by Julio José Chiavenato, and Cabanagem: a revolução popular da Amazônia (1985) by Pasquale Di Paolo, as well as the discourse of the literature, in "O Rebelde" from the 19th century, in the construction of versions of the Cabanagem, in order to verify how each historian and writer has positioned in relation to the Cabanagem, electing victims, villains and heroes. We also aimed at verifying how the voices of the characters and the narrator of the short story condemn or justify the Cabanagem. The discussion presents the theoretical assumptions based on Paul Ricoeur (1999), Jacques Le Goff (2005), Beatriz Sarlo (2007) and Umberto Eco (2004).

Fighting tomorrow : a study of selected Southern African war fiction.

Rogers, Sean Anthony. January 2005 (has links)
This research provides an analytical reading of five southern African war novels, in a transnational study of the experience of war as represented by the novels' authors. In order to situate the texts within a transnational tradition of writing about modern warfare, I draw on Paul Fussell's work on the fictional writings of the Second World War in combination with Tobey Herzog's work on the writings of America's war in Vietnam. Through a reading of Sousa Jamba's Patriots and Mark Behr's The Smell of Apples. I illustrate that while these and other southern African war texts can be situated within a transnational tradition of writing about modern warfare, they also extend the tradition by adding new and previously silenced voices. I then turn to a focus on specific experiences of southern African anti-colonial war as represented in Pepetela's Mayombe and Mark Behr's The Smell of Apples. These texts are read in light of Franz Fanon's extensive writings on the nature of colonial violence and with a focus on the role of the victim and perpetrator in violent resistance to colonial oppression. Following this, and keeping with my examination of the experience of war in southern Africa, I read Pepetela's Mayombe. Sousa Jamba's Patriots and Chenjerai Hove's Bones with a view to highlighting their writing of women in times of war. Using the work of Florence Stratton, this section exposes the great difficulties faced by women in times of war as a result of war's complicity in the maintenance of patriarchal societal structures. Finally, I read Chenjerai Hove's Bones and Mia Couto's Under the Frangipani as post-war texts so as to highlight the authors' use of organic images to imagine post-war futures that are not tainted by the experience of war. In examining this topic, I aim to suggest that all of the texts studied show war to be a continuum that results in failed societies. I therefore read the texts as active interventions that seek to break the destructive cycle of the region's wars in the hope of better and constructive futures. / Thesis (M.A.)-University of KwaZulu-Natal, Pietermaritzburg, 2005.

The natural history of the humpback dolphin, Sousa chinensis, in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa : age, growth and reproduction

Nolte, Zianca January 2014 (has links)
Globally, inshore cetaceans are being threatened by a number of anthropogenic activities. The Indo-Pacific humpback dolphin, Sousa chinensis, is currently listed as ‘near threatened’ by the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN). In order to be able to advise on management and conservation strategies, knowledge on the life history of the species is required. To date very little is known about the biology of humpback dolphins. The aim of the present study was to determine basic life history parameters, including age, growth and reproduction of humpback dolphins incidentally caught in shark nets. Age was estimated by counting the growth layer groups (GLGs) in the dentine and cementum of sectioned and stained teeth. Both a Von Bertalanffy and a Gompertz growth curve fitted well to the data, but for comparison with previous studies on Sousa, the Gompertz growth function was adopted to describe the relationship between length and age for KwaZulu-Natal populations. Length at birth was estimated between 104.33 and 111.57 cm for males and females, respectively. Asymptotic length was reached at 266.48 cm and 239.29 cm for males and females, respectively. This corresponds to the attainment of physical maturity at 24 GLGs in males and 16 GLGs in females. Asymptotic mass for males could not be determined, while for females it occurred around 160 kg. The maximum age estimates and recorded lengths were 24 GLGs and 279 cm for males and 17.7 GLGs and 249 cm for females. Differences in length-at-age and mass-at-age for S. chinensis suggest sexual dimorphism. The attainment of sexual maturity in males occurred between 9 and 10 GLGs, corresponding to 230 cm total body length and 140 kg. The maximum combined testis mass of mature males comprised 0.42% of total body mass, and a roving male mating system was proposed. In females, sexual maturity occurred around 7.6 GLG, between 220 and 222 cm and 104 - 140 kg. The ovulation rate is estimated at 0.2 ovulations per annum, suggesting a calving interval of five years. It is evident from the results obtained in the present study that geographical differences exist in the life history parameters of S. chinensis. As a result, regional conservation and management strategies are imperative. Results from this study can therefore assist in assessing the status of existing population structures in the KwaZulu-Natal coastal waters, and the implementation of regional mitigation strategies to ensure the continued survival of humpback dolphins in the region.

Natural and human impacts on habitat use of coastal delphinids in the Mossel Bay area, Western Cape, South Africa

James, B.S. (Bridget) 01 1900 (has links)
The south coast of South Africa represents the extreme western end of the range of the Indo-Pacific humpback (Sousa chinensis, plumbea type) and Indo-Pacific bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops aduncus), which are both confirmed to range as far west as False Bay (Jefferson & Karczmarski, 2001; Hammond et al., 2008). Individual ranging behaviour for both species however is not well resolved. Recent genetic analyses suggest that animals currently considered as plumbea type Sousa chinensis (Reeves et al., 2008) may be a separate species, Sousa plumbea (Mendez et al., 2013). In South African waters less than 1000 adult humpback dolphins (Sousa chinensis, plumbea type hereafter “humpback dolphin”) may comprise the entire population (Karczmarski, 1996), while all estimates suggest the bottlenose dolphin (Tursiops aduncus, hereafter “bottlenose dolphins”) population is relatively large, numbering thousands of animals (Cockcroft et al., 1992; Reisinger & Karczmarski, 2010). Both dolphin species are exposed to variable levels of anthropogenic impacts throughout their range including vessel traffic, chemical pollution and habitat degradation associated with coastal development. This thesis describes the results of a study investigating: 1) the environmental and anthropogenic factors which influence the habitat use of humpback and bottlenose dolphins in two adjacent bays on the southern Cape coast, South Africa – Mossel Bay and Vlees Bay; 2) the abundance of humpback dolphins using Mossel Bay and 3) the interaction of these two dolphin species with white sharks, and the influence this has on dolphin group sizes and habitat use in Mossel Bay. Both land-based and boat-based survey platforms were used in this study with land-based data collected during dedicated watch periods at sites in Mossel Bay (n = 6) and Vlees Bay (n = 4) between February 2011 and March 2013, with a focus on humpback and bottlenose dolphins. A surveyor’s theodolite was used at these sites to collect positional data on animals, while behavioural data were collected through direct observation. Boat-based photographic identification surveys were used to collect data on the presence of individual humpback dolphins in Mossel Bay between April 2011 and November 2013. White shark data from Mossel Bay between February 2011 and March 2013 were provided from boat-based chumming surveys for the collection of photo-ID data from the Master’s thesis of Rabi’a Ryklief, based at Oceans Research. Data were analysed using ANOVA’s, Tukey honest significance tests and generalised additive modelling (Wood, 2006) in programme R, while capture histories of humpback dolphins were analysed with RMark (Laake, 2013) using POPAN open population models (Schwarz & Arnason, 1996) and Huggins heterogeneity closed capture models (Huggins, 1989; Chao et al., 1992). Humpback dolphins socialised over sandy beach habitats in both bays, while feeding/foraging occurred over reef systems in Mossel Bay and off fine grained sandy beach habitats in Vlees Bay. Humpback dolphin resting behaviour was observed at a very low frequency and occurred in all of the primary habitat types in Mossel Bay, while in Vlees Bay resting was only observed over reefs. Bottlenose dolphins in both bays preferentially used wave cut rocky platform habitats for feeding/foraging and resting while socialising occurred in the vicinity of estuaries in Mossel Bay and fine grained sandy beach habitats in Vlees Bay. Higher sighting rates were recorded in the control site, Vlees Bay, than in Mossel Bay for both dolphin species. The largest reverse osmosis desalination plant commenced operations in the sheltered corner of Mossel Bay in October 2011 and discharged approximately five million litres (Ml) of effluent per day (between October 2011 and February 2012) and 18 Ml per day in March and April 2012. In Mossel Bay higher sighting rates of humpback dolphins occurred in the period before desalination began while bottlenose dolphin sighting rates were highest after active desalination decreased to once per month (May, 2012). During the period of peak brine discharge in Mossel Bay, sighting rates were highest for both species in Vlees Bay. Even after desalination operations decreased the sighting rate of humpback dolphins remained low. The operation of the desalination plant at full capacity in Mossel Bay may have led to reduced use of this area by both humpback and bottlenose dolphins. Key habitats in Mossel Bay for both dolphin species are shared with great white sharks (Carcharodon carcharias hereafter “white sharks”) and focus around the three estuaries and their associated near-shore reef systems. The presence of predatory white sharks may limit the time dolphins spend in a specific habitat and influence the number of animals within groups, with larger humpback dolphin groups at sites with high shark utilisation. Both dolphin species had lower individual sighting rates during periods when white shark abundance peaked. Large group sizes of humpback dolphins at Seal Island, and of bottlenose dolphins at Hartenbos and Tergniet, combined with increased rates of travelling and decreased resting and socializing suggest that these areas may pose the largest threat to dolphins due to the variety of shark size classes’ present, especially larger sharks. Closed capture models generated within year population estimates ranging from 48 to 97 individual humpback dolphins (2011: 97, 95% CI: 46 – 205; 2012: 48, 28 – 81; 2013: 68, 35 – 131) while open population modelling produced a ‘super-population’ estimate of 116 animals (95% CI: 54 – 247) using Mossel Bay. During the study 67 humpback dolphins were individually identified with 94.3 % of the individuals in good quality photographs distinctively marked. Fewer humpback dolphins may be present on the south-east and southern Cape coast, including between Algoa Bay and Mossel Bay, than initially thought (Karczmarski, 1996), as definite links exist between Algoa Bay and Plettenberg Bay (Smith-Goodwin, 1997), and Plettenberg Bay and Mossel Bay (this study). The Gouritz River mouth (21º 53' E; Ross, 1984) and De Hoop (20º 30' E; Findlay et al., 1992) were previous suggested as the western limit of this species, but within the last 20 years knowledge on the extent of their range has been greatly improved, and range extension of this species may be occurring to the west with animals present as far west as False Bay (18º 48' E; Jefferson & Karczmarski, 2001). Due to the vulnerability of this species and their wide ranging behaviour, conservation plans need to be implemented on a wide scale to ensure protection of these animals from human impacts throughout their range. A concerted effort is required to further establish the population links between the various locations on the southern Cape coast that these animals frequent. / Dissertation (MSc)--University of Pretoria, 2014. / Zoology and Entomology / MSc / Unrestricted

It id based on the hypothesis that the circulation of pedagogical models, during the Second Empire, is a mark of representation fights that engendered in the period and delimited the substitution of teaching methods used for teachers formation in basic schools and of the elementary school students. To understand the reform and unveil the circulation of pedagogical methods found in it, the Province president s role as a manager of the Empire business and as an agent of the State organization and control was analyzed. In this process, it was studied the experiences performed by Inglês de Souza in the three Provinces which he had public duties (São Paulo, Sergipe and Espírito Santo). This way, it aims at understanding the school model revealed by Inglês de Souza and the school form proposed in his reforms. The research shows that the reformed public instruction was seen by Inglês de Souza as the only possible hope for Brazil s modernization and the way to integrate the Empire to the century level . The reform, as a modernization strategy which he undertook, was produced according to his liberal and positivist convictions, about the educational virtues as a progress factor that did not consider the necessary teaching laicization. This way, the Modern Pedagogy that he supported in his reforms is that one based on the intuitive teaching and on the lessons of things that he will designate as experimental pedagogy, so in this model, the sensitive experience came first, as a concrete teaching, on the opposite to the methods that used to initiate the learning process through abstract notions / Esta tese busca compreender a reforma da instrução pública realizada, em 1882, no Espírito Santo pelo presidente da Província Inglês de Sousa.

The research focuses on the disciplinary field of education history. The environment of the research analyzed was the Faculty of Law of Ceará. This work was developed in two stages. In the first one, we reviewed the literature underlying this institution. In the second, we applied semi structured interviews and questionnaires to the universe of teachers and students participating in the research. By sampling, according to the interest of participation in the research, we interviewed and applied questionnaires to the participants. Through such interviews and questionnaires we set up the social, cultural and pedagogical profile of legal knowledge at the UFC. Through these collection instruments we set up the social, cultural and pedagogical profile of the academic community of the Faculty of Law of the UFC. We also study the bases of the pedagogical project of the Law Course of the UFC in cross with data extracted from the student and teaching community. As a temporal cut, we took as a regulatory framework the debate drawn from 1914 in the Historical Memories of the Faculty of Law for the year Of 1914, written by Professor Tomas Pompeu de Souza Brazil, drawing attention to pedagogical issues in the course. Through this document we can identify a set of concerns of the master Thomas Pompeu with the formation of the bachelors in that context of the republican society and, on the other, the understanding of the present subjects, 100 years, before the challenges of the democratic society, captured by narratives. Through this study, we try to understand the direction in which the law formation in the UFC points to a series of challenges that foreshadow the practice of forensic practice.
